Ottawa O-Train ride: entire Confederation Line (Line 1) between Blair and Tunney's Pasture stations

- Here's a ride aboard the Ottawa O-Train Confederation Line (Line 1) - my first video release from my May 19, 2024 trip to Ottawa.
Note: I stated this was the Trillium Line going east at points in the video, but this is in fact the Confederation Line going westbound.
In this video, we ride the Ottawa O-Train westbound from Blair Station to Tunney's Pasture Station.
The Trillium line, which runs north to south, is currently closed for renovations and an extension.
I highly recommend that anyone who visits Ottawa try the O-Train. As I mentioned in the video, the closest thing I can compare it to in Montreal is the REM train.
This video was filmed on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 9:32 am Eastern Canadian Time.
Thanks for watching!
Exciting! Can’t wait to watch your new video! Cheers!
Thank you!
the o train is so slow and unreliable, very disappointing from the capital of a so called first world country
Yes true and apparently transit service will soon be reduced there.
Kind of like how people can be unreliable, ironic.
But who says that today's Canada is a first world country? In many respects, it looks and feels like a third world one when compared to Europe.
O Train is amazing! C'est magnifique!
Yes it truly is nice.
There are so few people on the train! :/
Yeah good point
In your time there, would you say that one can get around Ottawa using only public transport? And is it somewhat reliable? I saw a lot of pauses in this video, so maybe the frequency of the O-Train isn't that great?
Yeah I'd say not as good as Montreal but from the day I spent there it seemed ok. But yes there were a few pauses you are correct
Until all components of the Stage 2 extensions open (west, east and south), it's very hard to live car-free over here. The buses right now are not that great because their old dedicated right of ways are no longer usable since that's where they're extending the train, therefore buses now get re-routed into mixed traffic
The O-Train frequencies suck on weekends, but during rush hours it gets boosted up to a train every 4 minutes. We used to have 5 minute headways on weekends as well, but that was cut for maintenance reasons. Hopefully we'll be getting it back once they finish redesigning the train's wheel axle hub assemblies
@gdkid Correction: weekend service is at about every 9 minutes due to an OCT operational decision because of weekend "demand" - not due to maintenance.
Btw, also, it is precise terminal departure scheduling even to the seconds.
yayyyyyyyyy
Oh yeah you are in this area
are you still there?
The Bayview stop is near the old location of the Ottawa West CP station, where passenger trains would continue across the Prince Of Wales bridge, through Hull, then back across the Alexandra bridge to the old Union Station on Wellington. It was a beautiful set-up.
I never knew that. Impressive! Thanks
There's a video of the old train leaving Union Station, across the Alexandra Bridge, thru Hull, back to Ottawa via the POW Bridge then to Bayview. It's on UA-cam.
😃🙂😀👍
Excellent Train Ride First Of June 1 I Am Going Probably Be Going To Ottawa
Enjoy!!
It looks pretty neat. I’d like to see other cities. If you do other cities, that would be pretty interesting. I never saw the Montreal one. I’d like to see the Montreal.
Thanks! Yes I have a playlist of Halifax with some transit rides on buses.
Although the Confederation line trains have operators, the trains are automatic - they exist only for door operation, supervision, and diversions as you experienced at Sain-Laurent
Very interesting. Thanks for the information
New trains will be online 2 trillium line and line 3 Airport line, but there’s also gonna be the old trains on the line 3 airport line and trillium line. Link on discord
Thank you for the information
He meant line 4, line 3 is a whole different line that will mainly share some stops with the 1 line
@@ibrahimabah3693 that’s true
Rideau river bro....
Oh yeah
@@SkyOfTheUniverse besides the Rideau river there's the Gatineau river located on the Quebec side both of these rivers flow into the Ottawa/Outaouais river...
Yeah I forgot about that.
Most of the stations are named for the cross streets (Tremblay Road) or landmarks (Tunney's Pasture). The exception is Pimisi which was chosen to replace the original, LeBreton Flats, to acknowledge the indigenous history of the area. Tunney's Pasture was expropriated for use a federal government office park in 1947. Until then, cows grazed on the land.
@@billsanderson1442 thanks so much for the info!
Hi Patrick....This was a pretty awesome ride that you took us along for on the (OTrain Confederation Line) im a Caribbean- Canadian guy living in Toronto and every year I travel by myself up to Montreal and alweys like to ride the STM train buses and looking to head up there in October! But havent gpt chance to checked out Ottawa transit 🙏🙏 hopefully next year.
My pleasure! Yes, it is certainly worth checking out at least once my friend!
Little while back, the o-train was slightly more delayed because of issues with the trains, i remember seeing huge time gaps and even i experienced delays with it (train stuck at station for 10+ minutes) i have photos of that still, i think
I guess it got better over time eh.
It pretty much did!
I forgot the mention the O-Train uses single cars on the Weekends.
Oh that's a single car eh. Basically one element. Like our REM train does now on weekends
@@SkyOfTheUniverseI thought I told you about single set trains a few times over the last 3-6 months
Patrick Congrats You Are In Ottawa 🇨🇦
Yeah I was in Ottawa this past Sunday for the day.
I was there a year ago and going again next week. I'm from upstate NY but travel to Ontario often to see a good friend of mine and we had fun just getting on random busses and the train just to see where it took us.
Yes it's certainly a nice train. I'm looking forward to the other line opening with the extension.
Excellent video Patrick....I've been to Ottawa several times, but before they had this new train line...I remember them having great local bus service in a dedicated bus-way & nice stations along the way. I think the train may need a little WD-40! LOL......glad you had a nice time!
Thanks mate. Great points.
All the noise and vibrations around the tight curves is due to the contractor not building the rails to spec, and Alstom not building the trains to spec. After a lot of investigation it was discovered the private project managers responsible for building the system weren't bothering to make sure any of it would actually work together! Has been quite the scandal - but slowly it is getting fixed. The rails are being adjusted as needed, and Alstom is completely redesigning the axle assemblies for the trains. Once the new axles are installed a lot of the vibration and rumbling should be minimized.
Thanks so much for the information
right on
Yeah man
They started using single set trains in the fall last year when the trains had wheel tire problems, the OC Transpo new boss mentioned to city council she wanted to use single sets on weekends before the disruption last year
I just read today Alstom isn't going to fix the parts of something
@@SkyOfTheUniverse Yeah they disagree on the root cause, they say the bolt that was keeping the wheels together was getting loose because of the sharp curves at a number of stations, like the approaches in and out of Hurdman, the sharp right hand curve out of Rideau, the right hand curve out of Tremblay, and the 2 curves west of St Laurent
TBC, the weekend service level always was single car trainsets. They were actually running more kms than required on weekends until last week only due to a variation.
So cool!
Yes it was
Cool trains! The seat fabric is the same as in some S-Bahn trains in Germany.
I didn't know that! Thanks for the information
@@SkyOfTheUniverse Look up S-Bahn Hamburg for example.
What do you think of the O-train?
I liked it! It was smooth, comfortable, etc. Just a bit noisy on the curves haha
Hi, I'm a Canadian living just north of Sydney, Australia. The train system you have in Ottawa is very similar to what we have in the CBD (Central Business District) in Downtown Sydney. No one ever calls it 'Downtown Sydney' it's just known as the CBD. We have the Trams going through the CBD on the surface from the Starting point at Central Station. That is to cut down on the amount of Traffic that goes through the CBD on a daily basis. The rest of what we have is the Sydney Transport trains, which they are all through every burb of Sydney that you can think of. They are the double decker carriages. The train system here is great; when I moved here, I thought I have died and gone to heaven because transportation system was so far ahead of Canada. I didn't realize that Ottawa had it's own train system and I think that's great and it's mirroring what Sydney has already done about 20 years ago. Here is one of the links for the Vlogs I watch for the Sydney: ua-cam.com/video/Cwo40XdwWyk/v-deo.html, and from there you can follow this dude on his vlogs.
Thanks a lot for the comment. Very interesting! I'll check it out.
This is a fake video... everything went as planned. No delays, no breakdowns, no derailment, no R1 Special buses. 😅
But seriously folks... Bayview will be the transfer point to the new Line 2 (north-south), whenever that opens...it is more than 2.5 years late, with no specific opening date committed.
Lol good one. I guess they wanted to show off to me as a visitor to Ottawa and make sure it went perfectly. I've heard all about the O-Train stories though. Hopefully it gets better eh
@@SkyOfTheUniverseNo, the system really typically has a 98.9% service delivery, with most trains in a tighter headway consistency than other systems require.
There were R1 special buses going to St. Laurent because trains weren't stopping at the O-Train station there.
