  • Here are some face molds taken from my lovely daughters who were kind enough to lend their faces for this cause. Genesis V and Accucast 590 are both great materials for face casts. Both have ~5 min. working time which is ideal for faces and hands. Go to the lifecasting page on our webstore for more product information:

    That is our Alginate Release. It is water based so it's easy to wash out of hair. For faces like this I don't mess with a skull cap.

    An alginate negative mold is good for 1 casting. Sometimes you can get 2 or 3 but only if you have a very simple cast. Alginate is a jumping off point for several other processes. If you want a lifecast mold that may be used for multiple castings, use Gel-10. We also have a video detailing a Gel-10 face cast on youtube.

  • @brickintheyard
    @brickintheyard  11 років тому +4

    Yes, you can use an alginate mold to cast a Gel-10 silicone face but it is tricky!

    Go to 14:13. I think those folks have the stuff you are looking for. :) Most hobby stores carry a very substandard alginate.

    I did a 'life cast' of my 7 year old just recently. (video responce) I picked plaster bandage because it would only take 10-15 minutes and it would be relatively light. These girls are brave. It's not everybody's cup if tea to feel like underwater on dry land. But I bet he's game to try this.
    By the way: It was on *his* request after seeing your video's. I kid you not.
    LOL. That mixing tip comes straight out of a cook book. Escoffiers if I'm not mistaken. It is the way to 'lump free sauces'.

    P.S. I love the fact that the shells have that "eerie" 3D look, where if you move around, it looks like it's following you. They do this in Disneyland's Haunted mansion attraction. :)

    Some pharmacies have these but you MUST make sure you get the super fast setting type or your subject will be waiting a while.

    Genesis V and X are slightly stiffer than the rest of the accucast formulas. Some FX folks prefer a stiffer alginate when making had casts or large body casts.

  • @brickintheyard
    @brickintheyard  11 років тому +18

    The average face cast takes 15-20 minutes. That said, I would not recommend doing a lifecast on yourself. Find a friend or two to help and you will have much better results. A lifecast is tricky enough with your eyes open.

    Yes. Candy cigarettes are also a good kid currency.

  • @brickintheyard
    @brickintheyard  11 років тому +22

    Yes, but only use a small amount. Too much Vaseline will cause the alginate to slide right off the subjects face!

  • @brickintheyard
    @brickintheyard  11 років тому +10

    Not a good idea. When a person is on lying on their back it changes the shape of their face and increases the chance of alginate going up their nose.

    This is so cute to watch. I would love to do this for my great-nieces. Not sure if it'll ever happen though. But anyways, so cool you've got a life cast of your daughters. That'll be a treasure.
    OH! Just had a thought. Perhaps you can have a full family set, with your face cast, so that you have a point of reference (age), and have your kids do the life cast of you. Then you can film it, show us the smiles, and say, "So easy, even kids can do it." :D
    Anyhow, their smiles were cast perfect.

    I know that regular plaster comes out pretty painless from clothes in the washing machine or even by hand but how's that alginate fairing?
    Comes out in the washing machine or scissors only? :)

    Love all of your videos! I had a question, what's the difference between this alginate and the one they use to create a hand mold? Is it the same type? I noticed its thinner than this one. Is it just how much water you use? Keep it up!

    How long does the wholes process take from application to removal off face? I wanted to try this myself, but not sure I can lay the gauze myself. Alginate you would probably start with mouth and nose and finish eyes last, if doing it yourself.

    i am someone who is terrified to have this done to me. is there an alternative way to get a face cast of yourself? i can do the plaster bandages then i have that of my face, then what would i need to do to get get a full plastered face of me so i would be able to put clay on it to make my own personal masks?

  • @brickintheyard
    @brickintheyard  12 років тому

    It would probably take ~3 lbs of alginate and 8 4" rolls of plaster bandages.
