    The "We are best friends first:" always sounded crazy and wrong to me. Its weird because the show seemed to try to pass Loreilai being right here but she wasnt. Someone can have a dozen best friends, she can only have one mother and thats what she should have been to Rory.

      @@mariagarcia-jt1kk I'm sure people do think their opinions through. They may not agree with you but they definitely have reasons behind their opinions for example I don't think lorelai was always an excellent mother to rory. She raised rory in a bubble making her believe she's perfect and special when in fact she was just like any other person. Lorelai's excellent parenting also meant rory rarely accepted her faults and mistakes. Most certainly never learnt from them and kinda couldn't take no for an answer because in Lorelai's own words, rory always got what rory wanted. So would you say my unpopular opinion is not well thought through? 🤔

    • @mariagarcia-jt1kk
      @mariagarcia-jt1kk 2 роки тому +17

      @@Kashish4Eijaz i just disagree with the "being raised in a bubble" thing. i mean, in her chilton years rory pretty much was the perfect daughter: talented, responsible, compassionate, etc. so why would lorelai ever prepare her for failure in life when there were no indications that she’d ever fail? though a parent’s job is to prepare their kid for the real world, they’re still a parent who has to make sure they don’t entirely tarnish their kid’s self-esteem, you know? let it be up to the world to burst rory’s bubble, not her mother. i understand her being praised by everyone (not just lorelai but her grandparents, friends, classmates, teachers…) was most likely a recipe for failure, but the fact that everyone did it probably means she had what it took to succeed. so, what i’m saying is that a parent’s job is to build and reinforce their child’s self-esteem while still remaining realistic (which i would argue lorelai was, since she was never given any reasons to believe rory wouldn’t do well in life)

    It was such an interesting relatioship to watch. Lorelai is my favourite character of the series and most of the times I hated Emily and her obsession over controling and manipulating people but I think they are equally guilty. I'm sure that Lorelai's childhood wasn't fun and her parents were probably even more controlling, but when there was an opportunity to start from scratch and try to reconcilliate Lorelai didn't use that oportunity and kept pushing her mother away. I understand that after all Loralei and Emily went through Lorelai probably wasn't really excited about having her mother back in her life but totally pushing her away wasn't a good solution for a problem. The same thing is with Emily if she wanted to be back in her daughters life, controlling, manipulating and destroying her daughters relationships was never gonna to work. I still think that the lack of communication (normal conversations and not screaming and yelling at each other) was the biggest issue that characters in this th show had.

      I agree with this. I feel like Lorelai was always very very unmature in the sense that if there was ever an open spot where they finally agreed on something or got along, she would push her away or create drama by getting mad at Emily when she was just sharing her opinion. And we all know how Emily acts. I also just hated the way that Lorelai would talk about Emily. There were multiple times where she would refer to her mom as horrible and evil people just as Hitler, Stalin, etc. I always thought that was so mean, insensitive, and hurtful. If I were Emily, I would have never spoken to my daughter if she said that. She just has no filter or even a care in the world to think about how her words could mean to other people.

    I think the issue with Emily and Lor (and to an extent Rory) was that Emily was concerned about optics. She stood by Loreilai when she was pregnant, but also tries to force her into another box to make the pregnancy 'acceptable.' In other scenes, we see complaints about how Emily maintained her home and the people in it. I think that Emily was hella insecure and that made her antagonistic to people, especially those who naysayed her. Also, she was definitely someone obsessed with status, so when Lor started making decisions that didn't align with their 'tax bracket' she didn't respect them and automatically deemed them inferior to what she'd be able to produce. This produce an unsafe environment where, even in adulthood, they had to con their daughter into spending time with them, and never healed to wounds of the past.
    When she comments about Lor and Rory's relationship, I just think that Lor thought to herself 'what are all the ways my mother messed me up, and how can I not do that to my kid?' thus they have a more open and accepting relationship...unless Rory crosses a moral line, built more on friendship than traditional parenting ascribed to.

    • @RitsychServare
      @RitsychServare Рік тому +5

      Which makes so much sense that her and Rory's relationship is not quite a mother-daughter but as friend relationship because then the need for control on her daughter's life would make her appear to be like mimicking her own mother's ways which she doesn't want. There has to be a balance there so that the relationship is still a healthy one. Unfortunately, their parenting styles veers into extreme ends of the spectrum and the friend relationship doesn't quite work as Rory grew older. The child never truly learned to take ownership of her own wrongdoings because instead of her mother's rebuke, it's just a 'friend's unsupportive opinions... in a way this made Lorelai's authority seem unrecognized nor respected unlike that of other authority figures. It's unfortunate how she turned out but even Lorelai herself didn't see it coming how raising Rory so unlike how her mother raised her made for some regrettable choices.

    i have a complicated father and i understand a lot of the reactions lorelai has. she can be immature at times, but pushing her mother away is totally understandable since her mother has never been really nice or present in her life. let's not forget that lorelai didn't even want to be this close with her mother. how can we blame her for the attitude she has when emily obligated her to start a relationship in ep 1 to help pay for Rory's school? if i was obligated to get into that situation (especially with someone as emily who was constantly saying unnecesary things) i probably would've been the same way

    Sadly, when I got engaged to the love of my life, I had such a strained relationship with my mother, I didn't even tell her, I was that uncomfortable about having her there. Someone else told her about my wedding and she called demanding to know what was going on. She did come to my wedding because I wasn't ready to tell her don't come, so I understand Loralie's reluctance to tell her mother she was engaged because it was clear that Emily was more concerned about being slighted than wondering why her daughter was hesitant to share her life with her.

      Some parents are just god damn awful.
      Emily is an entertaining character and, strictly as a character, I love her, but a real life Emily would be a nightmare. She always dismisses her only daughter treating her like she's beneath them just because she took a different path and is happy in her small town world with a modest house and simple minded fiancé (Luke).
      My own mother was like Emily when she was younger (and I a child) but much more verbally abusive (she liked to yell like a maniac and insult me for the stupidest reasons that were out of my control) and nuttier.
      I never invited her to my wedding, I didn't want to hear her criticism, her dislike of the wedding dress and makeup, her disapproval of the groom and her constant nagging and complaining about the most normal stuff.
      I remember the day she caught me working out and her telling me "Oh, now you want to look like a bimbo and attract men". That's the type of woman she used to be.

    I once thought this relationship was basically the female version of Lex Luthor and Lionel Luthor from Smallville, but then I realized that these relationships were somewhat similar.
    Lorelai Gilmore and Emily Gilmore used to argue all the time, but in the end of the show, they started to get along.
    Lex Luthor and Lionel Luthor always argued but then they never resolved their conflicts and towards the end of season 7, Lex killed Lionel.

    Emily made questionable choices towards Lorelai & Rory but lets face it, Lorelai was sometimes too harsh with her mother. Bottom line, Emily was trying hard to be in her life for better, sometimes Rory & Lorelai treated her like she was a villain. During the revival I actually loved the writers softened Emilys character & showed us her vulnerable side. I actually thought she, Jess & Paris were the best comeback in the reboot. She was a mom trying her best after all. ❤

      Only because she was left out. She'd have to be too blind or pretend to not realise that her own daughter couldn't feel safe enough to tell her first... that's saying a lot about their relationship. Lorelai repeatedly asks her "why don't you care?" and I wonder if Lorelai is expecting her mother's reaction to match her own when it comes to the things she's proud of but you can see how much she's deprived of that kind of love and adoration that she was able to provide only for Rory. So as sad as it is for Emily, this is precisely the result of how poor their relationship is.

    Emily was always a horrible person. Extremely selfish and controlling. Abusing and burning thru maids. Her thoughts and feelings were always more important than anyone else’s. Getting her own way is what she calls morally correct. She never allowed her own daughter to be her own person, have her own thoughts feelings opinions choices. Lorelei couldn’t be herself and live her own life until she escaped Emily. And THEN when it came to being a mother herself, Lorelei just thought, “What would my mother do?” and do the opposite. Problematic, but healthier in the long run. Rory had a mother she could trust, who treated her like a fellow human being, that she could talk to and confide in. Perhaps they have boundary issues, but that’s nothing compared to the abuse Lorelei grew up with.
