Feedback patching with the THC Recursive Machine
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2024
- In which I demo and review the Recursive Machine by The Human Comparator. The RM is DIY analog semi-modular synth designed from the ground up to feedback into itself. This results in a unique instrument, where little changes can have huge results. I show musical examples, put it in contest with acoustic instruments and go over the functions and signal path.

Tips for DIY Builders
Hope this may be useful in addition to the excellent info in Hainbach's video.
Ordering: Even though it shows out of stock, as long as there's a Buy button, you can order. It only took a week or so before my order got filled--although this was pre-Hainbach, so maybe expect a longer wait--haha. EDIT: the pcb + case set is now out of stock and can’t currently be ordered until October.
Mouser BOM-- this has 90% of the parts. Currently, there's a few components out of stock, but these are easily substituted--a few metal film resistors and caps. NOTE: There's a spot on the front panel for a 10K SMD resistor, but the BOM lists a 0 Ohm resistor. The 0 ohm (bridge ) resistor is a substitution so the filter will self-oscillate.
Other parts: I got most of the other parts (except pots) from Amplified Parts in the US, but they should be easy to find in Europe/Asia. The Accutronics BTDR-2H is available in three reverb lengths--short, medium, and long-I like the medium.
Pots: The Song Huei linear pots are the trickiest part to get--best sources (I know of) are Synthcube and Thonk. Use all linear B100K short except for the mixer--where A100K (log) pots are a better choice for controlling audio. The BOM doesn't mention this.
IC sockets: The BOM doesn't include IC sockets, but I highly recommend adding some to your Mouser order. Socket the chips! I got mine from Amplified Parts--model #'s P-STIC-8, P-STIC-14, and P-STIC-16
Notes: The build is 95% through-hole parts, but there are a few SMD components. The 5 SMD components on the front panel in the filter section are required. THC notes the 41 SMD decoupling caps on the back of the voice panel are optional. Don't be intimidated by SMD, it's not that difficult. The main things you need, are a sharp tip for your soldering iron, fine tweezers, and 0.3mm (super thin) solder. Always make sure your tip is well-tinned, and clean the pads with isopropyl alcohol before you start. I put a very small amount of solder one one pad. With the tweezers, I position the component, and tack it down to the pad with solder. Position as necessary with the tweezers. Then I apply some heat to the other pad at the junction of the component, and add some (not too much) solder. Then I go back and add a bit more solder to the side I tacked down. Done!
Also worth mentioning-the oscillators don’t track at 1V/Oct, but you can always input your own oscs if you want to do melodic sequences in a scale.
Good luck!!
Whats the price after parts?
DeathTrap About $300 with the pcb set + parts
StotheEtotheB the pcb + case set is available from The Human Comparator at shop.73-75.com/recursive-machine
@@resonant_space GAAAAAAASSSSSSS!!!!!
@@resonant_space / HAINBACH: could you measure the Y axis depth? Out of interest of hacking it to fit into a eurorack case etc. Cheers
"The best use of this is probably to annoy the people that live with you." I GUFFAWED.
"Circuitbend it with your FLESH!"
Yikes! 😂
At leat its his Flesh and not his Fleshlight.
@@DisintegrationZerfall I would be really worried if it was someone elses flesh. 😋
I mean if that bothers you, you can use someone else's
So metal.
What sets you apart in my book is your musical approach to every piece of gear. You make the horns come alive, so to speak. Case in point: that great hypnotic composition at the end.
this is the perfect first synth for me, will definitely save up for when it gets back in stock in October
yo, the camera work and the lighting at the end of the video is exquisite
Thank you, trying to get better at that.
Definitely some of the most interesting sounds I've ever heard.
Hi hainbach! This was a terrific demonstration of a really wild synthesizer.
"Circuit bend it with your flesh" needs to go on a t-shirt
Please do this!!!
haha! 😂
I LOVE HOW THIS SOUNDS
It looks and sounds like someone I would love to play with for hours. Thank you for the review.
Epic knob twiddling ! Thank you Hainbach and Namaste 🙏
Strega brought me here. I think im in love with this one
This makes me think of a interesting technique I used to use back when I still had my Tascam 488 8-track cassette recorder. I also has my very first Delay effect which was the old Radio Shack realistic fader type one. It didn't have a proper name? But I love that thing a little Bucket Brigade analog one, noisy as hell! It probably had the same chipset that this synthesizer does. I also had a DOD Death metal distortion pedal and one technique that I would do is since the 488 had 2 auxiliary sends on each channel and 4 band EQ. I would put the distortion pedal on auxiliary 1 and the delay on auxiliary 2 and do the old trick of feeding them back into their own Input channel so I could bleed its own auxiliary input. But having the distortion on auxiliary 1 and the delay on auxiliary 2, I would bleed in The auxiliary from the other 2 channels cross modulating them Together and then shaping it more with the 4 band EQ. What I would get is this incredibly distorted yet rhythmical Wall of sound that just sounded glorious and magnificent!
I would love to hear you do an album with just this. No overdubs
"Unspeakable noises..." sign me up!
aaaand it's already sold out :( I'll have to catch it when it comes back in stock, this seems like the perfect instrument for me
The curse of small batch runs - last week there were still some available.
Same boat. Gotta get one fast next time round
get a solder iron and some hours in your garage and your done with it for ,that one hmmm
If it still has a buy button then you can still get in queue unless that changed.
My cats were VERY interested in this episode's sounds.
5 min in, and I'm going crazy looking for one to buy. LOL
I WANT THIS! ha ha ha
Every time I watch this channel I keep waiting for a Human Centipede moment. Looks like one arrived
such a gr8 review with this flesh receptive sound maker ....
Bro your on spotify!! You got a new fan keep up the great work
The piece of music is absolutely great!
Hi Hainbach! Jon just got the PCBs back in stock and I ordered mine from Sweden plus the parts list cart!! I’m going to build it in December and will let you know how hard it was as a noob to soldering!
PS where are we in the “Circuit Bend with Your Flesh!” Hainbach T-shirt ?!! Seriously I want 3
Looks like I'm going to have to become a Patreon as I really want the main composition from this video. I would love to hear it worked up into a song with drums and vocals coming in at the point where Hainbach does a filter sweep on his Roland synth.
Great demo of a rad machine. It will look good in a nice wooden case like your D1000. Maybe stained black.
Love your channel, always something sonic beyond belief 😁
Would love to build it when I got the £mo, Xmas is coming 😂
Very nice piece in the end!
Love that track you made
That drift though!
This is insanely cool.
nice little piece of music in the end
Wow! Too advanced for me, but a very interesting design and such a great review! Really enjoyed the track too!
This thing looks/sounds cool! On his website, he has the price at 999 Kr, which is only like 100 Euro/USD.
Yes, then parts (120 for the regular stuff) and about 40 for the PT and Accutronics.
@@Hainbach Ooooh! Good thing you were paying attention better than me. haha
About $250 all together. Still seems worth it
@@sheepkillindog Agreed!
@@sheepkillindog Not for me. It looks like an unfinished project.
And for less than 250 bucks I can buy a MicroFreak.
Hainbach, have you ever considered covering abstract turntablism/anti-records? Like, in the vein of Christian Marclay, Maria Chavez, or Katsura Mouri? We've seen you do tapes (as far as I know), why not vinyl?
I have thought about it, and I saw Maria's heart-breaking performance in Winnipeg. It is in the future.
My cat went crazy while listening to this!
I knew it would have effect on cats! PT2399 does that
Thats how you know its good
Great synth!
Awesome gear! Reminds me a bit of lyra ish except not as beastly. :)
Very good review! I agree, it sounds wonderful, but I don't think I could get past the design. It's too fragile and too cramped for me.
God i love that wire recorder :)
Beautiful! Can't wait to see some builders selling premades, I can't solder worth a damn.
My only criticism of this looking at you using it is I wish the knobs were bigger / more spaced out.
My only criticism is that you have to find all the components for yourself.
Because they only sell the 2 PCBs. AND FOR 95€!!!
Winston Smith if that worries you you probably shouldn’t look up Deckard’s Dream then...
@@iNerdier It's just TOO MUCH.
I can get a MicroFreak for MUCH LESS.
Or I can get 2 Craves for LITTLE MORE.
Or another Neutron.
thank you for this, i really glad to watch this before get the machine, and hope to make some drone and will ping you in ins. hahaha
Unspeakable noises!
Lovecraft fan :-)
What a great synth, I have a few home made drone box's, that I run into a home made 7x7mayrix mixer, with a stack of pedals, this is really compact. What is the box you ran into this, with the matrix of sockets.
That is prototype Chirality audio patchbay. Very handy to convert minijack and get fx in
The scale of it never set in until hainbach picked it up
I just assumed it was a behemoth
If you do get a proper enclosure for it, I imagine you could still circuit bend it with your hands using the Landscape AllFlesh 3.5mm jacks.
is this unit eurorack-able ? it would be a very good value $$$ as a eurorack and probably better for the hardware since it is so exposed
what are the 2 outputs for? I was thinking that it was not stereo for some reason , but maybe it is?
Great video. 21:46-21:50... what is this device? Old german tape delay?
ua-cam.com/video/p3dMIOcXCd0/v-deo.html
HAINBACH what a beauty, thank you
i like thc
what a coincidence, me too

Bad Ass!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing.
What’s the matrix mixer looking dealy behind and to the right? Maybe missed it if you said...
Unfortunately, it's OUT OF STOCK.
I would have loved to transform it into a 44 HP Eurorack module by using a couple of Doepfer blind panels (42HP + 2HP).
Or I could squeeze it to 42 HP, by cutting away the final amplifier.
Will be back in stock in the future!
The mechanical throbbing sounds kind of remind me of the Contagion soundtrack.
Too cool for school.
The drone at 2:30 it's crazy sounds like a Terminator sound effect
I'm definitely interested in ordering one of these things, I wonder what it would sound like if you fed the output of one of these through a delay pedal, like the Boss RE-20 Space Echo?
Hellish stuff, because you free up the PT delays for noise making duty
@@Hainbach Or, you could end up with something really trippy and psychedelic sounding.
@@Hainbach By the way, please keep these cool videos coming.
@@Hainbach I'm in the process of building a big modular synthesizer from parts off some circuit-boards from an old late-70's Yamaha CS15D synthesizer, the keyboard circuit board and wiring-loom for it got a bit corroded, I'm planning on building a total of 44 modules for the modular synth, it will have a total of 8 VCOs which will output Sine, Square, Triangle, and Sawtooth waveforms, there will also be a DSP FX module that I'll make using a DSP FX circuit board from a defunct Yamaha mixing desk, and also an Oscilloscope module.
@@Hainbach There's a great DIY Synthesizer book you can order from the Music From Outer Space website, I ordered a copy of it and it's a great read.
This can make a good sound track for a horror movie
Woahhh!!🤖👌🏼⚡
this is mental
Wow !!! Do you know where can I find it used ? Thanks.
Ask around in the DIY community
@@Hainbach Thank you Hainbach !
the tune could be a next NIN song !
What's that Chirality Audio box you're routing things through?
Patchbay prototype „Mesh“
@@Hainbach interesting.. somewhat similar to the Future Sound Systems MTX8?
I bet this would be a good match with the ms-20 mini?
I would think absolutely yes
It's probably just a matter of changing a resistor to make the LFOs go slower?
It's the capacitor value that has to be changed.
Sounds like the entire new Dune Soundtrack.
You should be able to glue the broken corner back together with some super glue.
Now i wish i could solder :D
Waiting for the builders to drop their links here...
The miniaturization of knobs continues ...
has anyone seen Hainbach ever blink?
It is not known.
Does anyone know price point?
THC please make buildt or pre buildt units :( :( :(
yessssss
All of my want.. well.. that and all ciat gear lolol
"Recursive Machine!
Sorry, this product is outdated and no longer active"
Darn it!
I think that is an automated shop message - supposed to be back in October.
Oh… Why only DIY?
cost saving. it would cost dbl built
I just want a synthesizer that can hook into my nerves.
Would love one but no way could i build it, for sure i'd fuck it up..
Love 20:28

weed synth
Fleshbending.
Weed joke
ffs if you are building a machine to be considered art, please please please use metal alps pots not this plastic junk.
Not a lot of musicality. Interesting but utterly useless.
