I always found Luigi's Mansion to be Nintendo's best use of visual and sound design. Despite lacking the advent of surround sound, everything has a weight to it in the mansion, every track is subdued, every ghost has its place and its distance from Luigi. The little things like dust kicking up behind Luigi or the 'enter portrait' sound from Mario 64 playing when you pick up one of Mario's things just show how in-touch the developers were with the game's overall feel. I was a super cowardly kid, scared of getting caught by the guards in Ocarina of Time or the inevitability of fighting Bowser in Mario 64 because the castle was so barren and Bowser has a spooky laugh. Luigi's Mansion I wasn't scared of, but I was constantly on edge. Except the intro to Chauncey, the zoom-in to that door with the innocent music box sounds and baby noises is just... god that's so stupidly effective.
Thanks for taking me back to that time, man.

A guy with a channel that works with a group of people on one channel with about over 100,000 subscribers has left a comment four years ago on a channel that hasn't taken off for even this one great video. Imagine how UA-cam works. Spoiler alert It does, just not in favor for everyone who deserves, not for those who work together and not for those who work by themselves, it only works for itself and its creators who succeed.

    best survival horror game ever.
on the real though, I adore this game. one of Nintendo's most unique outings ever. Hoping that 3 lives up to the hype.

As a kid, my parents were very good at restricting what sort of games I played. Despite being born in 1992, I didn't play Mortal Kombat, Doom, or Resident Evil as a kid. Luigi's Mansion really struck a cord with me because it was one of the first games I ever played that was even remotely oppressive. It's a game oozing with atmosphere and it's very similar in tone to something like Disney's The Haunted Mansion rides. I really love this kind of kid-friendly horror since there's a level of playfulness and the creators have to get more creative in order to make a creepy atmosphere since they can't just rely on blood and gore.
When I first played the game, I had a phobia of puppets so the Clockwork Room was a scary place to me. It was always in the back of my mind while playing and I had to get the courage to go up into the attic when playing. No other game at the time gave me that sort of feeling and it's such a great contrast to everything else Nintendo makes.
It's for those reasons that the sequel, Dark Moon, disappointed me a bit. It just didn't contain the same sort of atmosphere. On the tightrope between scariness and playfulness that the original Luigi's Mansion pulled off so well, Dark Moon definitely steered too far into the playful side so there rarely felt like there was this looming threat, and the environments were too bright and simplistic looking. I suppose a part of it is personal bias, since I grew up with the original and was obviously never going to be scared by another Luigi's Mansion, but the atmosphere just can't compare to the original for me, sadly. Hopefully it works for all the kids playing the newer titles.

You make a great point about the attention to detail in the environment. It adds a heap of character to the house itself and really makes each room feel live. Love this game, thanks to this vid I might have to pickup the 3DS version to play again haha. Fantastic work man :)

fantastic video, nailed exactly why i wish luigi's mansion was talked about more as a true cult classic. luigi's mansion 3 is unironically my most anticipated game for the switch, and i really hope they don't tone down the atmosphere and unique tone that made the original so special.

The Gamecube has to be the most underrated console ever next to the Dreamcast.
PS: that Eternal Darkness OST, though!

The Gamecube was actually fairly powerful for its time. It's just that most third-party developers didn't want to figure out how it worked because it was more complicated than what the competition was providing.

I remember waiting for my dad to bring back this game from the rental store. I have great memories with this game. Loved the video also, keep it up.

@2:38 Regarding if Luigi's Mansion is a horror game, I would argue it is, if only technically. It definitely is pulling its punches and tries to be child-proof, but on the other hand it definitely has a gloomy atmosphere and it actually does make sincere attempts to unnerve the player. Plus, you have to keep in mind the target audience on average scares more easily.
A few moments in particular would be your first real combat encounter in the game with The Parlor, the lead-up to the boss fight with Boolussus (or however it's spelled), and that one sleeping girl.
The design of the common ghost also does a fairly good job of balancing spookiness while still being kid-friendly. The sounds them make in particular are a good example of why they work: they make these sounds that resemble laughter and something more animalistic, all while being otherworldly. Physically, too, they have an animalistic and vaguely predatory appearance, contrasted with a sort of playful attitude that gives of "slasher smile"-vibes if you will. They come across as, well, sadistic.

How would you think of a way to replicate this feeling and improving upon it in the modern games if people were to mod this and Dark Moon?
Okay, Boos could cause more chaos that doesn't immediately reverse your progress, just make it either really hard or really easy to beat them as they buff ghosts, change the layouts of rooms every single time you cross through a door, random teleportation every fifth time you cross through a door, sometimes change some elements leaving some ghost fights impossible to beat and you are forced to leave the room, and lastly just taking away some key items or keys or even captured ghosts. They can appear at any time from anywhere, but they do have specific spots where they will appear and be left extremely weakened. They can grow stronger from having multiple of them grouping up in one place that doesn't default to growing bigger, they can share abilities, pass along stolen items, or even coordinate specific attacks and events, even calling upon specific ghost powers. If there are 5 or more of them in one place then they can even occasionally use boss ghost-based attacks/abilities. Overall, they're incredibly chaotic and if they're not dealt with quickly and immediately then they will make traversing the mansion after clearing certain areas a nightmare, however if you know what you're doing, and as long as you can piece together the correct clues as to where their weakpoints are and what spots you need to look at, then you can beat them incredibly easily, heck I would bet there would even be speedruns where you're supposed to catch every single boo that could be topped out at 30 minutes.

Nice video! I somehow completely missed the parallels the game has to the original Resident Evil (especially the door-opening cutscenes, which are a pretty clear homage). I also agree that the boos - while an appropriate addition - were handled poorly, and in my opinion are the outright worst part of the game. I specifically remember the ones in the basement being a massive, tedious pain in the ass to capture because of that one room with anti-gravity pads and dust piles in it, which always took so long to re-traverse over and over again whenever those boos changed rooms.
Aside from that, it’s a really neat and unique “Mario” experience that DID successfully creep me out as a wee young lad, especially coming off the heels of the very bright and upbeat Super Mario Sunshine (I know it came out later, but I played it first).
Also nice Aphex Twin reference, I dig it.

Starting the video with the song "Black Rose" from the excellent and criminally underrated classic "Eternall Darkness" = an immediate like 👌👍

Great video. The gamecube definitely was a very experimental console with the types of games on it. It definitely had some of my favourite games of all time.
I mean the gamecube had Sonic Riders on it. That game came out the same year as Sonic 06 yet it was an amazing racing game that I can't get enough of. It is a weird and original racing game that is skill-intensive but a lot of fun nonetheless.

I never really noticed how damn “horror gamey” the mansion is in lm. The mansion itself would not feel out of place at all as the setting of a more horror-focused game.
