I have a "54 Champion Lap Steel that came with a '54 5C1 Champ Amp - that Leo sold as the "beginner's kit" 70 years ago.
Virginia's signature is on the lap steel and Lupe built the 5C1. The 5C1 has new caps and modern 3-conductor 120v power, but is otherwise intact. No problems with the tuners on the lap steel - it was in storage for nearly 40 years. It's finger oil that tends to deteriorate the tuner keys, which were either ivory or resin/bakelite, so tended to wear pretty fast.
Great Puisheen video, thanks Mike.
I'm subscribed to 200+ channels. none of them can compete with the joy of a new Puisheen video
Lovely job, just got an old Selmer that needs similar work
Didn't know you played lap steel! Never really appealed to me until I came across the band Wednesday, who play dark indie rock/alt country and they have a brilliant lap steel player. Saw them live recently, such a treat. Would be right up your alley, Mike!
I've got a 50s lap steel with the original Kluson Deluxe plastic buttons and they're in great shape still. Big ol' crack down the back of the lap steel's body though ha...
You really know how to make a guy who doesn't need a lap steel think they need a lap steel, Mike!
It's me. I'm the guy.
Genuinely, I can't tell you how many times this old steel has been the exact thing to either get me out of a playing rut or ended up being the kindling for inspiration I needed to make a track stand out! And largely, they remain affordable!
@@Puisheen Yup, Reverb lists them for $750 to $1200 in relatively good shape. It would be cool if Fender made them again.
Those old Fender and Pre Fender lap steel guitars are awesome. Glad that thing is getting some quality time.
I've got a 40s Regal lap steel with possible replacement buttons, they don't look like Bakelite anyway. Love the beautiful sounds those guitars make!👍👍
StewMac did buttons on that LP Special too. It must be in the air.
Dan E @ stew Mac did a similar project on a vintage LP yesterday :-0. The planets must be aligned.
Nice work as usual Mike.
I have a function first mentality, but it's easy when actual Vintage gear is out of reach for me lol.
Big fan of the Lap Steel sound and we are lucky to have the brilliant Charlie Owen doing his thing on the Lap Steel down here in Oz.
Nice to see you!
Weirdly the second vid today I've watched with these '50s buttons being replaced. Watched Stewmac's showcase of a near-mint 55 LP special.
Oh wow, I didn't catch that. Gotta have a look!
can confirm... Lapsteel is a wonderful sound source
Okay now i made it to the end.. holy shit that thing sounds great. More lappie playing from you my friend, please!!
Thanks for the video, maybe I should buy myself a lap steel now instead of a new Vintera II Jazzmaster for Christmas...
happy holidays mike contents been great this year, heres to another🔥
Hey, thanks Chris. It's been a tough year and even tougher for making these videos. I really appreciate it!
Cool video! My grandpa gave me his k-50 from when was growing up, and the buttons are crumbling. I don’t have a heat gun. Would it work to heat up the posts with a soldering iron?
Thanks for the great video Mike! What do you think about using a soldering iron if one doesn't have a heat gun?
Sounds kind of Jeff Beck like.
Shes a beaut
Nice, stewmac just uploaded a video about this on a 55 LP Special, you should check it out, they have great tips.
Lap steel? Have you got a snuff tin & started smoking Roll ups aswell 😂😂
Only joking, looks awesome 👌🏻
Mike - is there a way to purchase a guitar and have it sent to you for setup etc and then pay whatever your fee is plus shipping to send it on to me?
Hey Mike, I'm curious as to the strings, guage and tuning you utilized?
It comes up as text at the end, EB 13-56 gauge in open g
@@BaBaBaBenny Thanks, I missed that
I ended up building a set from a spare Baritone Slinky 13-72 set. I omitted the 72, then subbed in a 32 for the D string and a 24p for the G
My old Guyatone's tuners will one day ... possibly soon become ex tuners. I will void my warranty
