- 1992, when I was 10 years old, I had my very first PC: an IBM PS/1 386SX with 20 MHz and 2 MB of RAM. Today I finally received one again in its original box. So here's my unboxing video. Enjoy! :) [German language with English subtitles!]

Wonderbar! Ich hatte ein IBM PS/1 ins 1990 mit 286 und 1MB RAM. Sehr nostalgisch!
12:48 Sehr abgefahren, wenn man sich überlegt das dort Spiele gezeigt werden, die damals teuer und sehr schwer zu bekommen waren. 120,- DM und mehr pro Spiel + Versandkosten aus dem SW-Dina4 Katalog waren Standard. Diese Collection wäre damals der absolute Traum gewesen!
Ein TIP: In diese Sammlung gehört imho unbedingt "Legend of Kyrandia". Hab mich immer gewundert, wieso das niemand kannte. Ich hatte es, und habe es noch immer als Orginal :)
Da hast du dir ja wieder ein echtes Highend-System geholt... zumindest für seine Zeit. Mein damaliger 286er hatte allerdings schon einen Slot, wo ein 5.25 zoll-laufwerk drin war ;)
"Schon" einen 5,25"-Slot? :D Du meinst: noch! ;) 3,5"er kamen später. Jau, aber es gab auch eine PS/1-Desktop-Erweiterung mit nem 5,25"-Laufwerk. Hatte ich nur damals nicht, also brauch ich's heute auch nicht. (In meinem späteren 486er war dann noch ein Uralt-5,25"-Laufwerk mit drin.)
Da hab ich mich verschrieben. Ich weiß schon, dass 3,5" später kam ;)

Das Problem mit dem Flackern beim ersten Monitor lässt sich relativ leicht beheben, Monitor Gehäuse öffnen und an der linken Seite mit einem kleinen Schraubenzieher den gelben V Hold Regler einstellen. War bei mir das gleiche, mit einer Drehung um 1/8 nach links war es behoben.
Also my first DOS/Windows based PC. My dad got me the 2121 C42 - 386SX- 16Mhz. What memories I recently got one restored and in perfect working order. Mine also has the the RAM upgrade for a total of 6MB. One thing I remember is that it has 256KB VRAM which would display 320x224 @ 256 colors and 640x480 @ 16 colors....VGA basically. But it actually has a SVGA controller only with 256KB VRAM and not SVGA's 512KB. Some people managed to upgrade to 512KB and get 640x480 256 colors in VESA modes in DOS. Windows 3.1 doesnt have drivers for that mode but OS/2 does. I wonder is it better to go this route or its possible to use a ISA SVGA card and output to the monitor?
you can even get 8-bit ISA SVGA, (and a few 16-bit cards that work in 8-bit slots) certainly used 16-bit cards should easily be available.

But...why? Why would you want such an outdated computer? I had that computer and it gave me lots of problems.
to play DOS games, and games specific to Win95/98. The interaction between early Windows games and video cards and audio cards can be curiously specific. Virtual Machines and DosBox are no less complicated to set up correctly, it's simply a matter of dealing with software settings instead of hardware. I'm a bit older and would gravitate towards C64 (I have a TheC64 emulator) and Apple II's, which overall have less headaches. But certainly younger people have more nostalgia for IBMs and x86 clones. Also, using the old IBM Model M keyboards are an experience in themselves. At the time they sold $600 alone, nearly half of the price of the PC itself.

One word: Nostalgia.
As SonataFanatica said, this was his first computer. Besides games, it's a bit of history kept alive.
I have an Amiga 500 myself, and I wasn't even born yet when those were state of the art machines.
It's just a warm, fuzzy feeling that's hard to describe.
Also, it's fun to see the reactions of guests when you ask them to switch it on.
