I understand that the RGB10 is easier to pick up and play for those that know nothing about these systems. However, you also ignore:
    - RP2 will receive Android 8.0 update by the end of October
    - Emulator updates for the life of the system, continually improving performance/options/game compatibility
    - Potential for community updates since the dev is going open source with the 6.0 software (look at the RG350 community, huge potential here)
    - Higher resolution scree, definitely noticeable in the video and in person
    - RP2 has a built-in store to get more roms, very helpful for non-techie people
Honestly, I feel the decision to pick the RGB10 is short-sighted and takes none of the above into consideration. PSP looks all but unplayable on the RGB10, along with the majority of N64 titles. As others pointed out, SM64 is a terrible benchmark. Don't forget, one still needs to understand how to get roms on the RGB10 in the first place which means the purchaser either needs to do research on their own or have someone help them. Again, advantage RP2 since a more techy person will either help them or they'll figure out some advantages of the RP2 on their own.
On the whole though, I appreciate the video. You're the first person that's done a legitimate comparison and further solidified my purchase of 5 RP2 units for the family for Christmas based on performance. I can set them up myself in advance with all the roms & a nice frontend so no issues there.

Thank you for the in-depth feedback! I will try to touch on a few points.
      1) Android 8.0 coming soon. This would only be of interest to me if the performance improved as a result. Android 8.0 does typically require better / more modern hardware so there is the potential it may actually run worse on this device than Android 6.0. Fingers crossed it actually helps with performance.
      2) Better screen on RP2 - Agree 100%.
      3) RP2 has a built-in store - The store is quite limited in what it has available, none of the games I went searching for were actually there. Also the games you download via the online store are only playable in the RETROID boot menu which has no options for emulation configuration so you are stuck if their emulation settings are not correct. Not really a big selling point for me.
      4) Getting roms onto the RGB10 - You are correct, the use of the linux file-system means you need to install a third party tool to allow your computer to read and write to the memory stick (assuming you don't use linux). Once you have done this, it works just like any SD card and is trivial to add roms, the folders are all there and you just drop them into the correlating system.
      5) As others pointed out, SM64 is a terrible benchmark - I covered Goldeneye as the N64 benchmark app and then concluded that the RP2 was the superior N64 device. Android in general is great for N64 emulation if that is your preference.
Congratulations on buying RP2's for your whole family for xmas! You won't be disappointed. I myself was hoping my daughter would gel with the RP2 more so I could order the pink one for her birthday. I think if you can set them up with a nice simple front-end that can auto launch at bootup like the RGB10 / and avoid the whole android menu cluster you should be able to achieve a similar level of usability. There are several emulation-station style front-ends or the RP2 you can try out. I did play around with the included "DIG" front end but found it underwhelming both in appearance and performance. Also, I keep finding the battery life on the RP2 acting strange. I will aim to do a video on it once I can nail down the issue. For instance I put it in sleep mode last night at around 42% life and today I fired it up and it was completely flat. Considering this device takes over a minute to boot up cold into Android, this is a big concern as the sleep mode is the only thing that will make it a liveable device. I also mentioned in another comment, I sat in the Android menu and watched the battery life tick down in front of my eyes from 32% to 0% in what seemed like 5-10 minutes when I first got the device. And this was playing absolutely no games at all! Perhaps it just needed that initial full-charge that some batteries do.

@@remulate2846 Appreciate the time put onto the response man! I still feel, considering build quality, screen and ease of importing ROMs (store being ignored here) the RP2 is superior for the price. Also, the color options are on point, truly something for everyone.
I can see the RBG10 fitting the need for kids though, definitely an easier front-end to use for sure.
From what the community has said, while it's true Android 8 requires beefier specs there are processing updates that will make running emulation less taxing so the hope is at a minimum small gains with improved battery life.
Disappointing to hear about your battery issues, perhaps you could reach out to the manufacturer for a replacement?
Another huge plus of Retroid is their community support, customer service and open backing with visible support. They do things differently and truly hope they have success.
Keep up the great content! 👍

The 8.1 Android should bring solid DC performance as well but if your into PSP games mod a psp or a ps vita or just use your phone.

      @jaysanprogramming6818 4 роки тому +3

@@ryannu1578 Definitely not. It was a surprise to us all that it emulated well DS games (with no touch screen support) and the 3DS is much more powerful and thus complex to emulate. So don't bet on 3DS support. If you want to play 3DS games, I strongly advise you to get a used (in good shape that is) 2DS and hack its firmware.
The Retroid Pocket 2 is a "retro" gaming device. It supports up to Dreamcast (with some issues) so take it as a multi emulator for old consoles prior to 2005.
Another thing to keep in mind is that although it is announced that it will support Android 8, a newer OS often requires more CPU power so even if newest emulators will be available, the overall efficiency of the device may suffer from a newer OS. So, to recap, don't ever update a device when the update becomes available. Wait for some user reviews to check if it enhance or hinder performances before doing the update.

    Great comparative video man.
That close up camera is dope also you can see how the low resolution screen on the RGB10 affects the image quality on 3D consoles like PSP/DC/N64. Wish it have a 640x960 panel but also the chip is not powerful enough to run these system 100% good. (Neither the Rertroid's one) RGB10 is the perfect 2D Arcade/Console/PSX portable device.
How about DS emulation on both devices. Did you tried it?
Also you are a man of culture playing those games in their native aspect ratio. This is so important man, kudos to that.

Hey guys I honestly have no idea what’s going on with this guy’s settings but the Retroid pocket 2 can handle psp games near flawlessly. Taki Udon did an entire series of videos on the Retroid pocket 2 including a psp emulation showcase and it handles games even like god of war at full speed and few hiccups. He also includes a google doc with his settings so please check out those videos as well. Taki even has bonus videos showing the Nintendo DS and Sega Dreamcast also emulated are full speed on the device. The Retroid pocket 2 is friggin sick.

If you take a close look at God of War on the Taki II video, you will see the framerate in the top right corner hovering around 15 fps, it is heavily frameskipped. Not sure if I would call that running at 'full speed'. For me anything under 30fps and its a no-deal, preferably 60 fps.

Dbozgt fair enough, still, it’s way better than what’s going on in this video. After all, god of war is one of the most difficult games to emulate on the psp, and therefore the standard for benchmarking. Even if it’s at 15fps, the fact it’s running at all is amazing, especially considering that there are other games besides god of war you could play.

I did show the Retroid bootable OS for Ridge Racer 2, the part where I pointed out how it was running in slow motion. If you look at the seconds counter on the in-game timer a second is taking almost 2 seconds to elapse. It appears they have setup the emulator to run full frames at the expense of the game speed. Also note that they have excluded games that do not run well (i.e Arcade Mk2) and included the ps1 version as an alternative. Still it is a good boot option for beginners.

While I understand the inclination to use the same emulator and settings on both devices to compare how each game runs I also don't think this does the relative flexibility of the Retroid justice. As an Android device it definitely has significantly more room to tweak settings and try different emulators than the Powkiddy. I guarantee that most of these games could run better than shown here with a few tweaks.

So it seems that the much better hardware of the RP2 is mostly wasted due to bad software :(

Good video, but Super Mario 64 isn’t exactly a good benchmark for N64 performance. Games like Goldeneye and Conker’s Bad Fur Day are totally playable on the Retroid Pocket 2, whereas the Powkiddy RGB10 (and any OGA clone) is going to struggle heavily with those titles. Even just entering the pause menu in Paper Mario will cause it to crash on the OGA running under Mupen64Plus-Next, standard Plus, or Parallel.

REMULATE yeah you’re right, I did miss that. Good job. You’re spot on about PSP though, it’s definitely a mixed bag for both consoles with the RK3326 chip edging it out due to overall stability. Games like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite run perfectly on my Odroid Go Advance, but the sound stuttering is insane on the Retroid Pocket 2...

The Retroid Pocket 2 not being able to run MAME at full speed in some major games is a big letdown considering that both can't run N64/PSP and DC perfectly so I'm not looking these emulators when i'll make my buying decision. I rather a console that run 8, 16 bits, MAME and PSX perfectly like the RGB10.

Even though the rgb10 has a much powerful processor, the rp2 still out performs it in most games. Rp2 really impressive. I am still confused why the rp2 performs better?
Plus the rgb10 has a lower resolution screen shouldn't it be performing alot better ?

Agreed, they could have reduced that bottom bar with the speakers on left and right and put the speakers above the dpad and joystick perhaps. Would still need a thin amount of bar to store the home / select and start buttons.

upgrade rp2 to android 8.1, install ppsspp and set video mode to skip buffer effect, frame skipping off, anistropic filtering 4x, now u would have a full speed ridge racer2 with fps 60 and flawless sound!!!!!!!!!

Um, your dreamcast comparisons is a bit skewed. You're comparing based on that crappy reicast emulator. Since the Retroid 2 is android, its quite simple to download the redream emulator that every android user SHOULD use.
With the redream emulator, the Powkiddy doesn't even come close. So for dreamcast emulation people, the Retroid 2 is your winner.

    • @remulate2846

When I navigate to Redream on the Play Store on the Retroid Pocket 2 it says 'your device isnt compatible with this version'. Can you confirm you have actually got Redream running on the RP2 and if so how did you install it?

      @TheObserver85 4 роки тому

ReDream isn't compatible with RP2, due to outdated OpenGL.
RP2 has Reicast, but heard later shipped RP2 handhelds will have Flycast.

Well technically it has a color screen with red green and blue so its not completely false branding. Also I finally got around to plugging the Retroid Pocket 2 into my main TV via HDMI and all I can say is, it looked like ass. The resolution on the big screen was horrible / blurry, it was cropping some of the edges of the screen (may have been a TV setting I needed to tweak) and a bluetooth controller had a lot of input lag. Definitely not something I would choose to do on a regular basis. For me thats not a worthwhile selling point but others may disagree.

  • @thecbc7658

Common they cost almost the same... How can you choose an inferior device over the RP2? The RP2 costs less and does and has more. Dislike.... Also, the RGB10 is a 13Ghrz but overclocked to 1.5.
