    Good Heavens! What's with folks for being impatient -- and even RUDE -- about the finished product, which she clearly says, in comments, IT ISN'T FINISHED, YET!!! She's graciously GIVING US -- NOT SELLING -- this cool pattern, too! Just listen to her video in its entirety and she tells you where to find it!
    What a wonderful video! I did a google search for "backbasting" and found a number of "how to" videos that should tide people over until this succinct, easy-to-understand, clearly passionate about appliqué woman can make her next installment. Meanwhile, for the advanced quilters who already KNOW what backbasting is, they can get started using a broadly applicable cool technique that will work -- amazingly -- on both light AND dark fabrics!
    Looking forward to the next mile in my journey to making cool quilts! SO glad I found this video!!!

    Thanks, Connie Sue - I'm going to use this method to trace and transfer the quilting pattern to my quilt tops when I don't want to mark up my finished top! I agree with other commenters, though, that I'd like to see a follow-up on the next steps to finish out the process of completing the applique pattern. :)

      @@ABQConnieSue We did, and we're all still confused!! You've shown one technique here and then showed us a totally different method of applique to explain this technique... which doesn't make an ounce of sense. Judging from all the comments on here, there's a lot of people totally confused by what you're doing. Then when someone asks you, you refer them to other videos that don't show us how to do what you're doing here.

    I haven't read all of the comments.... so I'm not sure if you've addressed this yet. BUT, I have a tiny bit of experience with appliqué (raw edge appliqué only) I've been interested and understand the methodology of doing appliqué "in the hoop." When using an embroidery hoop, the pattern first "baste's the pattern to the fabric. After it is basted then you cover the area with fabric then the pattern sets to satin stitch over the basted lines. I'm assuming that when you back baste the pattern on the front, that you are in essence transferring your pattern with basting stitches to the front of your piece. So, then I'm trying to imagine the next step. I'm not experienced enough to get through how to do this next step.... eagerly awaiting your followup video. Thank you for sharing a new process and a new way to learn!!!!

    Please forgive me for being a bit confused. It's normal for me! Ha. I hope you will demonstrate back basting, too! I just watched your video about back basting, but it appears that you are using a somewhat different technique than this one with the Press and Seal. The other one (two hearts intertwined) does not use Press and Seal. I believe the only real difference is that you marked the pattern on the fabric. Yes? With this video (using Press and Seal) that I am commenting on now, I am a bit confused about the batik blocks you are using. Please tell me why I need to have a batik block on both the front and back of the larger one. I will be checking for your response! I do want to get started on applique - and I think I am going to enjoy your videos (and your FaceBook sites). Thank You!

    • @ABQConnieSue
      @ABQConnieSue  5 років тому +4

      Yes, I'm working on another video as we speak. Hopefully it will answer your questions. Normally in my method we trace the pattern onto the back of our background fabric. We use a #2 pencil for this. However, occasionally we encounter a situation where the pencil mark doesn't show up. In these situations we can trace our pattern onto the Glad Press 'N' Seal instead. I was showing this second technique in my video. I would encourage you to follow my Facebook group. It is called "Apple Blossom Quilts Group". In the files section are 16 lessons that teach my Quick Prep Applique Method. I recommend downloading all 16 lessons and placing them in a binder for easy reference.
      As to the question about the two batik fabric, I hadn't realized how confusing it must seem to a beginner. One of the fabrics is the frame (blue), the second fabric is the center background fabric (pastel blue). I have already appliquéd the frame fabric to the center fabric. I have not trimmed the center background fabric to ¼" around the frame. Guess I better do that so that it all makes more sense.

    I guess I don’t understand how you appliqué now. Do you use the pattern to cut shapes with a seam allowance? Or can use use this method to just quilt? Your presentation is very good. Your directions are excellent. Maybe seeing the finished product can help me visualize the end results. Keep up the good work, you are very talented. TFS ❤️

    "back-biting": I found Connie Sue did a video earlier called "The Secret to Beautiful Needleturn Appliqué" in which she shows the "back-biting" she references since this video is only the start where the pattern is transferred from the original to the project background. In the earlier video, however, she has traced her applique pattern to the back of the fabric and does not use this Press & Seal method.

I don't know why people put things up to teach people how to do something and then when people don't understand they don't bother to even answer anyone. There's obviously a LOT of people who are confused with this technique. For all I know it's a brilliant technique.....if we knew what to do.

    I agree with the other comment about “salvage” and “selvage.” Got hard to listen to the mis-pronunciation. Lol. I use this method, Glad press and seal, for quilting. Place the press and seal on the fabric, trace the pattern lightly on the press and seal, sew directly over lines on the press and seal, then carefully tear it away. This works great for lightly quilted areas only. You run into issues with heavily quilted areas as you pull it away as you get tiny pieces of wrap you have to pick away with tweezers. It can be done but puts another step in your process.

      You must join my Facebook group called Apple Blossom Quilts Group. You will be asked a question when you ask to join. Answer the question. I will approve you. You will find the patterns to “Ferne’s Hens” in the file section. There are 9 blocks. This is one of them.
