Io ascolto rock progressivo e gothic metal. Non capisco nulla di musica classica. Mi ci sono imbattuto per caso qui adesso. Sono praticamente rimasto folgorato da Dio. Senza parole, solo commozione. E non mi sento un intruso.

Good old Arthur, so shockingly brilliant as to defy words. The power of that opening was simply immense. And his piano is so well voiced, the sound doesn't die after striking the note, it just rings on and on and on....
Just a thought for your consideration: the recording is dynamically compressed and this causes the piano to sound as if it isn't decaying after notes/chords are struck as would ordinarily be the case. Forgive me, but voicing of a piano really has nothing to do with it. Subtle dynamic compression is widely used in "classical" recordings and if done properly doesn't draw attention to itself. By the way, I'm a big fan of ABM.

What astonishing comments are occasionally made regarding the playing qualities (or otherwise..) of musicians. For my part,though I don't generally go in for making comparisons of performers,Arturo sounds on exemplary form in this recording,as well he might for he was at the zenith of his powers in 1965.You can hear every phrasing so clearly,and though I can understand a critic saying he was occasionally cool I cannot detect it here,and an impeccable technique combined with understanding carry the day.Not flashy,as I've heard some some performances of this work,but plenty of Lisztian dash to accompany what is a deeper concerto than might be initially realised .Bravo Monsieur Pianopera for its posting!
I think that there is nothing cool or mannered about his early recordings. In his earlier years he played with much more élan or éclat.... I find that is was only later in his career that his playing became more controlled, mannered and less spontaneous but it was still GREAT! As Barenboim remarked with amazement, "and you do not hear any wrong notes!!!!!!!!!"

Virtuosismo a parte, e non se ne contano in più di una mano coloro che ne fanno parte, la produzione del suono è qualcosa di sconvolgente, che non ha uguali e non si è mai sentita, forse effettivamente il solo Compositore.... ma non aveva però questo Steinwey, che inoltre è anche messo a punto dal medesimo Esecutore....

So much to say about this. Amazing smoothness and speed of parallel runs and arpeggios, amazing,unique and clear phrasing,driving the tempo forward in the last movement, not as beefy as Richter but more resonance of the inner voices. I find the middle movement a bit slow but for sure his tempo and rendition works in his hands ( as Glenn Gould, his pal , often used to explain.. "the tempo is different but it works !" ) In the final movement his playing sparkles like the music in one of Tchaikovsky's ballets (Nutcracker ?).Sensational playing and incredible smoothness of technique....so many superlatives and notes I have never heard before in this Concert in ABM's hands. Really beautiful,masterful and brilliant....

Diese Performance fand sicher am gleichen Abend statt, wie die des Ravel Konzertes mit A. Rumpf am Pult. Der erste Satz klingt teilweise unheimlich, fast bizarr, diese vielen Girlanden und quasi-rezitativischen Ausbrüche, vom Technischen ganz zu schweigen. Die Persönlichkeit ist es doch, gekoppelt mit dem Manischen, hinsichtlich des sich der Perfektion Verschreibens, unbelievable, a few can play the 1. Liszt, but not that GREAT!

I have heard many, really many "attempts" to make THIS concerto sound "right". Even the Cziffra/Cziffra version. My ears and heart settled for Richter/Kondrashin/LSO alone. The Richter was actually the second i had heard as a kid, the first had been one by Geza Anda, and i remember sitting there totally mesmerized, not knowing what hit me. Once you listened to it, you will understand what i mean. It unleashes like a unstoppable force of nature, with a take no prisoners agenda. The tempos, the heart-on-sleeve melodies and wild turbulences of life are absolutely balanced and rounded of throughout, no "fancy stuff" in the opening double octaves, no "niceties". Richter and Kondrashin were totally unafraid to "give us the works". I find that too many pianists and conductors seem afraid of playing Liszt like an unleashed force of nature and play this way too neatly and with too much restraint like Michelangeli here. The intro is too slow, too fancy, not virile enough, not killer instinct enough.
For almost 50 years I'm convinced that Richter made various unique, glorious recordings that stand out head and shoulders above everybody
else's.
Eg Richter/Wislocki for Rach 2nd, Richter/Karajan/Vienna Phil for Tchaikovsky 1st., Schubert Wanderer Fantasie, Dvořák piano concerto with Carlos Kleiber,.. whereas i can't bring myself to listen to his Bach and Mozart recordings, LOL,... take care and i hope you'll enjoy your new discoveries.

Spesso proprio non comprendo i detrattori di Michelangeli anche e soprattutto italiani... Non capisco le malignità postate anche dopo la sua morte.Da Michelangeli c'è solamente da imparare e provare tanta ammirazione per i capolavori che ci ha lasciato,e non lo dico solamente perché sono italiana,il suo pianismo è riconosciuto e apprezzato in tutto il mondo,il suo modo di suonare e il suo suono unici...
Riguardo le critiche rivolte al suo carattere conosco moltissime persone con un carattere davvero di EMME e livorose e senza alcun talento particolarmente spiccato,dunque imparassero almeno a tacere dinnanzi a tanta Maestria.
Per l'ennesima volta ho riascoltato questo capolavoro che lascia davvero senza respiro e questo grazie a te... 🙏🙏🙏
@@danieledirubbo3813 Eh sì Daniele,sono proprio io.Negli accounts precedenti c'era il mio volto con dei colbacchi poi è successo un episodio spiacevole dove hanno pubblicato il mio volto su Facebook deridendomi in un gruppo e mi sono ripromessa che mai più avrei pubblicato la mia immagine anche se purtroppo con Google le immagini rimangono.Ho sofferto talmente tanto che ancora oggi a pensarci nonostante sia passato più di un anno mi sento male.Ho deciso allora di disegnare e pubblicare un disegno al posto della mia immagine e non tornare mai più sui social tranne che su UA-cam dove ero comunque già presente anche tempo fa.
Tornando al Maestro l'altra sera stavo guardando "Oltre il genio", un documentario su Michelangeli e ho provato un grandissimo senso di soggezione guardandolo, e tra me e me ho pensato che se mai avessi incontrato un uomo del genere sarei rimasta impietrita e sconcertata alla vista di una persona del genere... così severa e austera almeno in apparenza,lo si nota anche nel suo modo di suonare e di rapportarsi con il pubblico.Credo sia anche questo il motivo per il quale comprendo non possa suscitare simpatia a prima vista.In realtà molte testimonianze parlano di un uomo estremamente timido,tenero, umile,riservato,anche simpatico e ironico ma comunque inaccessibile a moltissimi e tuttora avvolto da un' aura di mistero anche dopo tanto tempo dalla sua scomparsa.
La ricerca della perfezione,il suo modo di suonare unico ,la continua ricerca della perfezione del suono,la sua meticolosa precisione spesso maniacale ti portano automaticamente ad amarlo appassionatamente od a respingere ogni suo tipo di atteggiamento che si ripercuote automaticamente anche nella spietata volontà di criticarlo nelle sue meravigliose esecuzioni, proprio come accade a chi lo critica e anche molto pesantemente su UA-cam (ho solo UA-cam come termini di paragone).
Per quanto riguarda me sono una grandissima amante della musica sin da piccolina ma le vicissitudini hanno voluto che non facessi la musicista di professione.L'unico mio rimpianto è che essendo l'unica ad amare la musica in modo ammetto un po' troppo ossessivo mi ritrovo spesso da sola e non potendo chiedere aiuto a nessuno devo ricercare tutto da sola anche perché non ho amicizie in campo musicale.È una "ricerca" piacevole ma vorrei a volte che qualcuno mi consigliasse qualche ascolto che per i miei ENORMI limiti non posso ovviamente conoscere e spesso mi sento tremendamente sola in questa mia passione.
Invece a te cosa ha spinto ad apprezzare così tanto la musica e soprattutto il Maestro? Se posso chiedere ovviamente...

Mi piacerebbe moltissimo che tu perseguissi con la tua passione e nel mio piccolo farò di tutto per non farti mai perdere le speranze di diventare un pianista professionista! Il tuo Maestro ci ha visto lungo,molti insegnanti di pianoforte invece rifuggono all'idea di portare come esempio Benedetti Michelangeli soprattutto quando gli allievi non sono particolarmente dotati forse per non creare false aspettative.Molti ragazzi studiano pianoforte più per un desiderio dei genitori che per una reale passione e mi fanno una pena incredibile... Certo se mi suoni quel notturno come Samson François mi proclamo la tua "insegnante profana" di Pf 😜
A parte gli scherzi - e non di Chopin - io sono una persona estremamente sensibile e non perché sono donna ovviamente... At this time, he was still young as a pianist, I like his ealier playing much more!!! Less static, more natural expressions and more energetic, passionate. What a perfectly controlled and bright touch, like a cut-glass. It doesn't make me feel listening to Liszt, but Michelangeli pianism indeed.

Sometimes I like to reflect on which great artists I wish I could have heard live but wasn't able to, either because I am too young, or it just wasn't possible, whatever the reason. Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli is one of those that I wish I could have heard live. He fascinates me. A child prodigy with ambitious parents, he started to play at the age of just three. During the war the Germans captured him and he said they whipped his hands when they found out he was a professional pianist (he was a pilot I think during the war). Apparently he would practise for up to 10 hours a day. He had health problems and was famed for cancelling some concerts, everything had to be just right if he was to perform. He didn't like the applause of the audience apparently, he felt that it was the composers who deserved the adulation. You have to admire the level of dedication, the perfectionism, the striving to play each piece as closely as possible to what the composer actually wrote on the score. I trust that Michelangeli is still revered and celebrated in his native Italy, even though he left the country in the late 1960s after having two of his pianos confiscated, following the bankruptcy of a recording company of which he was co-owner. This Liszt recording is spellbinding. Thanks for posting.

Someone said it's a bit "matter-of-fact" - to me a certain calculated matter-of-factness is one of the properties of Michelangeli's charm.

According to my information, the Ravel was recorded on the 3rd April and this Liszt on the 31st May of 1965. At first I wanted to upload the Ravel Concerto, but the orchestra is simply not up to ABM's level... some embarrassing mistakes really. Also, no good communication between ABM and the conductor.
ABM could be accompanied by an accordion, I'd still want to listen to this Ravel. Pleaaaase!

It's wonderfully well played, of course, but, for me, it sounds a bit 'matter-of-fact', especially the 'triangle' concerto' section. However, the ending builds up the excitement!
When Hanslick criticised thre inclusion of a triangle in the orchestra, Liszt agreed, if the triangle were struck without a true virtuoso technique it could spoil the entire work. Later on, Liszt silenced Hanslick's endless criticisms by inviting him to share a platform at a concert.

This is definitely not my favorite rendition of Liszt's concerto. I think it is Lazar Bermann's if I recall well.

Lazar Berman was a great Russian pianist, who recorded quite a lot of Liszt…
The Transcendental Studies on EMI-Melodiya, and for DG the 2 concertos with Carlo Maria Giulini, and the Annees de Pelerinage. The Brahms 1st Concerto and Rachmaninov 3rd and a recital for CBS-Sony; Each and every recording worthy of repeat
listening. A wonderful pianist and musician.

There are two conductors named Alexander Rumpf, this one was born in 1928 (died 1980).
