I drove on the autobahn for a week a few years back and I could not believe HOW WELL everyone drives. Everyone seems to know their place. We flew up and down it at all kinds of speeds and it was such a great experience. What we see in this video must be relatively rare, at least in comparison with how people drive here in Québec. People have no sense of lane flow here. Everyone picks a lane and drives at whatever speed they want. Left lane blockers absolutely everywhere.

Agreed. German drivers, on the autobahn especially, really put American drivers to shame. People here in the US are some of the worst highway drivers I've ever come across. I know Germans often trash talk their own drivers, but trust me my German friends, in comparison to the morons here in the US your drivers are absolutely amazing.

I'm French and I drove through France, Italy, Austria and Germany recently. The difference between Italy and Germany was astonishing. In Italy, German cars would drive way above speed limits, pass dangerously on the right, flash their lights constantly. In Germany, same cars, but they behaved soooo much better. Even on the autobahn very few would drive above limits. The differences between two countries are unbelievable.

If you checked your mirrors 5 seconds ago and there were no cars for as far as you can see you might assume it's safe to move over without checking. Which is why this kind of driving is illegal in other countries. It's not logically sound to drive a hundred miles per hour faster than someone and think it's safe

When I first drove on the autobahn&I wanted to overtake someone, I saw someone in my mirror but they where so far away that I put my indicator on and when I checked my mirror again, his speed was so fast that he was getting close faster than I anticipated,so I cancelled my signal, but the other guy was on his brakes and horn (he wasn't that close but better to brake early than late)and I can imagine that it might have been scary to see a indicator on when the speed difference was 100+km/h , so getting used to the speed difference takes time ,but it is doable

If you do so, the chance of misjudging the speed of the oncoming traffic is nearly zero. Of course not all people are doing it - as seen in the video - but nowadays they are chatting on their phone…

Pov car is in clear and direct sight for 5+ seconds before red car changed lanes. If he checked more than once at any point in those 5 seconds he would have known to not pass. Regardless of that, he's in the right lane and ONE look at a car in the passing lane is enough to decide to stay put, especially when you can clearly see he's not "passing" any cars. He only decides to signal as he's turning the wheel, which is just as good as not signaling. This is Germany, namely the autobahn, and if you can't understand or agree with any of that, then you shouldn't have a German license. Driving high speed on the Autobahn can be satisfying, especially at good weather conditions and high quality road surfaces like in this video.
But there is always a safety issue, witch rises exponentially the faster you go, no matter how “good” you drive.
By overtaking with such high speeds, your risk to cause a fatal accident is tremendous, even if other road users don’t make a driving mistake, like in this case.
Imagine that someone’s tire bursts, forcing the car to the left lane right before you’re about to pass.
Or what’s with a stalled car at the left lane, due to a breakdown, behind a left curve?

For me personally the risk of falling asleep on a 6 hour drive with 130 kmh is much higher than when I drive +250 kmh, since I am fully awake and alert at all times, even over many hours when driving fast. When driving 200 or even 300 your eyes are glued to the road, your muslces are tender, youre looking 400m ahead, barely even blinking and so on. When driving 130 I switch songs on my phone, check whatsapp, take a look the landside and talk with passengers, or my eyes fall shut when Im alone in the car. In the US and other countries where you're mostly taught to drive by your parents the standard emergency stop reaction is to slam full brakes and swerve the wheel full in any direction. You cannot really expect them seeing you come flying in at Warp 5.. Because in reality they might not see the speed difference in rear mirror..
Look once, No car in sight
Look second time, now see car 900 meter behind
indicate, that car is now 500 behind
move to the left, and now that car is braking hard to avoid collission.
Not everybody scans their mirror twice in half a second while indicating. Especially older people just don't have that Situational Awareness to spot a rocket ship coming up from behind.
It's a 2 lane unlimited HW, you can get away with a bit more on a 3 lane, but a 2 lane.. this level of traffic : YOU should know better . YOU are supposed to moderate your speed to the conditions of the road.. YOU are supposed to be the one that can slow down at all times

It's easy to complain about the red car, but the only reason there was even any danger is because of the cammer's speed. Passing cars at a much higher speed is dangerous. It puts all the responsibilty for a safe passing in the hands of the vehicle being passed, even though the car passing has a much greater overview of the situation.

    • @StormaLorda

This is what I dislike from the Autobahn. People drive with such incredible speed that someome who wants to switch lanes has no sense of how fast the cars behind you are approaching.

  • @TheEulerID
    @TheEulerID 2 роки тому +22

If you have roads where somebody can be passing another vehicle with a 100 km/h speed differential, then this is going to happen from time to time. There will be times when drivers make a mistake, and the amount of kinetic energy which will be dissipated in destruction at that speed will be astonishing.
