I have an older one with alder that a few short years ago was $129
It's terrific guitar. None of those issues and sounds excellent. It more Tele than my elite from two years ago, believe it.
I'm 72 with a collection of guitars in every price point and have gigged 85% of them over and over again. No more gigging for me. Fun for the comorodery, trash talk, etc but not for working....
I only needed to lower the action slightly and balance the intonation.
Anyway, I've used it for gigging hundreds of times and recorded over 150 songs.
I think you got a lemon. Many problems for manufacturers during the bluster of Covid days.
Several of my buds have used it and most picked one up immediately thereafter.
    Oh well....Thanks!

Squire Affinity Telecaster retails for $260-ish (Dec, 2022).
Do a setup on the guitar (level and crown the frets, and put some mineral oil on the fretboard), replace the plastic nut with a bone nut remove, the stock pickups and install an aftermarket set (anywhere from $65-$250+, depending on what you get…though why you would throw a set of $250 pups in an Affinity is beyond me) and for possibly under $350 you will have a solid great playing and great sounding telecaster.
Look up some videos on how to do the setup and do it yourself. Same with the pickups. This stuff isn’t difficult, you just need to get away from the ‘gram and sit down with the guitar for an evening. You’ll get it done, and every time you play it, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself, not to mention that you learned a new skill along the way.

I did something similar with a 2018 Squier Standard Telecaster that I bought new for less than what an Affinity costs now. It was a project guitar from the start, new tuners, nut, all of the electronics, a lot of work to try to get fret sprout under control. Ultimately it was still lipstick on a pig. Bought a J&L Tribute ASAT Classic last year for less than what I had into the Squire (guitar purchase + parts) and haven't touched the Squier since.

Two items associated with intonation. In my experience having a sub $1000 guitar or bass be intonated "out of the box" (or when I brought one home that was already out of the box) falls into two categories: blind luck or someone where you bought it from doing at least a partial setup. Doesn't matter if it is Squier, Fender, Epiphone, Ibanez, Jackson, Schecter, Yamaha, LTD, J&L, etc. The second is the six saddle vs. three saddle bridge on the Telecaster. Overall, Fender seems to be moving away from the classic three saddle Telecaster bridge across the lineup. The only reason I can think of is having to compromise intonation on the paired strings with the three saddle design.

From LeoM; I always recommend playing a guitar in person before you buy it. You do not like the looks, the feel, the hardware design, the maple neck or the pickup specifications. Sounds like you did not buy what you wanted. Spending minimum is always a compromise, with anything. A $250 guitar in today's market is pretty close to the bottom shelf. Carefully buying a Tele that has the features you want and spend at least $750 for the better detail work will probably make you happier. We used those in our lesson rooms for years and they held up fine. I still have one. BTW, the Squier Classic Vibe series are really impressive for a low priced instrument,.

This is a pretty fair review you're going to have to do a little bit of work to the affinity series. For me I didn't play mine for a couple years cuz it just would not stay in tune after researching it was not the tuners it was the nut the nut needs to be replaced with a good bone nut then it became a totally different guitar. The only other mod I made is I change the tone cap out to something that sounded good to my ear. I'll never part with it

Agree, I bought two HB Tele recently and already had the Rosewood one, did bone nut new control plates with Switchcraft switch and CTS pots and Kent Armstrong Alnico vintage pickups, and a set of Schaller locking tuners on both the HB TE20s and they now play like $2000 guitars.

@@Crabfather no the electrics are shite. Cheap pots, poor shielding, but I knew this (I also have their active PJ in a weird blue sparkle and haven't ever even plugged it in yet). I made up a new harness anyway. I routed the body 4mm added a Switchcraft 5 way switch, push pull CTS 250k on the volume knob and a Bloodhound eight way tone pot. So I have neck parallel, neck and bridge parallel, neck and bridge serial, neck serial, bridge serial, bridge parallel. Which was always the plan. I was never ever going to use stock control plate. I changed the plate for a Wilkinson one with Graphtech saddles, roller trees and Schaller locking tuners. I shielded the cavities with shielding paint and copper tape.
Left the pickups in places the Bullbuckers with the Bloodstone Guitarworks tone pot.
You can get the pot on eBay it is the most radical cheap add on to any Tele or even a P / J bass.
I am doing the Artist bass next but currently have taken a Glarry Jazz bass, shielded it, new pots, and added pickups off a damaged 1986 Status bass I had, taken the neck off and crowned the frets and sanded neck down, new bone nut and Hipshot tuners. That's going back together tomorrow. Oh and a new Hi mass bridge that I also bought for the Artist too.

Some are made in China. You may have one that was made in China. I was told to stay away from those. Quality may have gone down regardless due to the pandemic and supply chain issues. lol i just ordered a Squier Aff Tele after i tried it and compared it to a vintage MIM, a player series Tele, and a Pro series Tele, and the wost was the MIM player series, the second worse was the vintage... the pro came out as a little thicker on the neck and had a round nice sound to it, but i liked the squier aff tele more, it had more of a bite to it, yes the frets was not rounded like the pro series, but thats not the hardest fix to round off the frets. But as is, i really enjoyed it so much that i choose the Squier Aff Tele and bought a small tube amp to go with it rather than buying a Fender MiM that was NOT cutting it for me, at least not the one i tried, and the Pro series... i can buy 6-8 Squier Aff to the price of one pro series tele, that's just NOT happening.

As I appreciate the video but there were several of us lucky enough to find a few factory screw ups (or factory Seconds as some called them) that were MIM that were very well done and Fender actually was trying to re collect and buy back because they were a Fender series they were releasing later with the Alder Body and beautiful Maple Neck so in truth for $249 or in my case I bought the first one for $189 and the second for $220 and after playing a few days seeing similarities of actual Fender models I ordered my Dimarzio PickUps and turned the first one into a Richie Kotzen with the Chopper - T and Twang King and it caught on because several companies who didn't sell back to Fender installed those pickups in their guitars and sold on REVERB for anywhere between $1,400 - $2,000 and sold them all .. My 2 as I said I made one like the Richie Kotzen and then the second with the Area - T and Tone Zone - T for a more of a classic sound and I have been offered $2,400 for these guitars and I have not taken anyone up on it.. Even tho they are Squire Affinity series they are amazing sounding and playing guitars. I did tell one guy I would trade him for a Richie Kotzen model so I have one in Ash but I couldn't help but be proud of the these guitars and whether it be my Guitar Tech who brings these to life for me Squire has become a name that many are seeing more Quality Control in then when they pay big dollars for a FENDER anything.. The Squires have made the top of reviews for a while now and I think what is keeping people from realizing the truth about these quality instruments is that there is only ONE ENDORSED musician with Squire and others are talked out of it.. If I was to go back out and play again I think I would leave most of my fancier guitars at home and I could do just fine playing my Squires and Maybe my Music man Axis so i have single and Hum covered but that Chopper T in a Alder Body is huge sounding much to my surprise much like Richie's Ash body and I believe i could get away with just my 2 Tele's if I planned it right..
I would usually take my Jem's and my RG450 - RG550 models out being Basswood and all sounding very similar with being DiMarzio Pickups but this day and age some of these cheaper guitars as they say with a great tech to go over it and catch a fret that snags or something simple, you would be set from the Jump with 2 Squire Tele's a couple Pedals and I would use my EVH amp or my Carvin Legacy and I can play with the best of them.. Remember honestly if you get lucky and find a comfortable guitar with great tone you can always upgrade so it becomes a top shelf piece of art but don't let names and players fool you because some of the greatest guitars in history were made from parts of everything and now many are priceless..You know I watch these of video's of you picking apart these guitars and not all of them will be top shelf or play like your fav guitars but I have no issues setting my Jem's down or whatever fancy guitar i have been playing to play one of these Affinity Series Tele's because they are to my spec's now and they feel and play amazingly but they are not the one's you are buying for $250 with the PINE Body but some of us don't want a finish on the fret board I personally love my maple neck with a finish on the back but I didn't have the dots sticking out either but if i did my Tech would have fixed it if the guitar was worth keeping.. I have owned Custom Shop Fenders that were junk compared to the guitars I was playing at the time but now I have these 2 MIM Alder Body Tele's. If I actually owned the Fender series they released after i bought my 2 Affinity Series that are the exact same except the $899 Fender Series has a lacquer neck which I didn't care for but that is because I have a 90's model Fernandez Blues Neck which has a better feel and a bit thinner than the Fender neck and if I would have kept that $899 Fender model I would have torn out the neck and installed my Fernandez neck in it or paid someone to reshape the Fender Neck top match my Fernandez but that's just me. As for electronics in my Affinity series guitars they were better than a lot of Fender's i have played now how much of that is because of the MIM but even the Richie Kotzen Model I want needs to be upgraded electronically except for the Push / Pull switch but i will upgrade it to the Dimarzio Custom Taper Potentiometer 250k or replace both volume and tone for standard Dimarzio and use the DPDT Mini Switch - 2 Position for my series/parallel switch. Now again for a beginner guitar as people are calling them with a little work and a few dollars these can be top shelf if you watch some of the other video's on the Squire Series because I never used to play anything but Ibanez or Jackson and even had their Tele which was damn nice, Charvel made one last year Top Shelf but I love what i have been able to do with a simple Squire Affinity Series Alder Body guitar and Honestly at Warmouth you can change the body down the road and create what i have or better and keep the Squire neck and then re sell on Reverb. You will be like those Vendors who did the same thing i did to the Factory seconds and made $1,400 - $2,000 plus and at most $200 in upgrades in the guitar world it is about what you as a player likes and watching these video's and how harsh some of these guys are on guitars they never would have survived the old days..
Nice Video tho Rock on !!!!

I just bought a Squier Affinity Telecaster in Canada, $339. Maybe I was lucky: aside from feeling some sharp fret ends, my unit seems really good. It arrived in tune and has stayed in tune while I (an absolute beginner) have worked on learning the fret-board. (I guess that amounts to very light, gentle playing, and may also mean that I am too easy to please.) I set out to get the butterscotch that day, although I too didn't like the look of the finish when I saw it online, but stocks were low after Christmas and I felt I had no choice in my price range. However, I ended up having to order, and wait for, a three-colour sunburst with a black pick guard, which looks very neat. The finish looks so good I know I'll feel crushed when it finally gets a scratch. (I guess that is something guitarists get used to.) Perhaps a lot depends on where the guitar was specifically made and who worked that shift.

Classic Vibe telecasters, however, for just a hundred or two more, are pretty killer.

Brought some reeds and received a 20% discount on guitar) mine has no other issues. I own 335, 135, 1960 goldtop lp, am std strat, charvel, peavey, and a danelectro. I don't try to do the gig thing anymore and have a regular job. This cheap Tele goes to work with me.

I saw mostly positive "It's well worth the money" reviews so far. Maybe you just got a dud. I have zero sharp fret issues and the Strat was playable right out of box, despite pretty terrible strings. I plan on having them both set up eventually. I'm just a hobbyist so Squiers are perfectly fine for my needs.

I think with how expensive guitars are in the current market, many people have convinced themselves that these cheap squires are better than they are. The higher priced squires are fantastic. Guitars that usually cost less money than a pro guitar paintjob should not have the word....suck anywhere near them....on the contrary its a miracle that someone made them for so little cash and they should be treated under that umbrella.Miracle guitars....
Now if you want to make them great guitars that can handle anything, all you need is modding skills, some aftermarket parts and some common sense.I wanted an affinity and i got one of those used for 100 something bucks which basically is like free guitar and i can spend the "big" money on actually excellent parts....
Thats why i dont agree the whole "spend a few more, buy a better guitar" like the classic vibe for example....cause yes it ll have a slightly better parts but why spend money in something slightly better that you ll change anyway? For example you gig live a lot and you want your guitar to hold tune reliably....now you paid for the classic vibe, the tuners are better but still no good enough to ensure..reliability...so why pay the few extras here and there when you ll replace them anyway?
Among all my guitars i have a bullet and an affinity...the affinity got it for somewhat 100 bucks and the bullet that was missing some stuff for literally a couple of bucks....those are free guitar canvases in my book...now they both have big stainless steel frets, hipshot tuners, dimarzio or kinman pickups..the works...they are not only better than a classic vibe but i can put them against any american strat in terms of playability, sound and feel and those guitars cost thousands....just saying...

@@TheMixWithABD Yes the Logo is a heavy tax.....those guitars especially in the higher registers sometimes cost triple or more their worth but on the very low(bullet and affinity type prices) you get a lot of guitar for the money.....in that price range yes you can find countless models from countless other companies but the quality is usually the same asian pot metally crap which you can easily change if you have the knowledge....
Its like the example of the rough fret edges you mentioned as a downside....a sanding block sponge from the dollar store and you can easily make them buttery smooth and also roll the edge of the board to make it feel like a thousand dollar guitar neck.....it usually is that simple.....

I see some people here that have had a better experience with the Affinity series, but most have modded them, which is good, but not beginner friendly. Save up for a Classic vibe, or try to find a good deal on a used MIM if you're starting out, neither are truley perfect, but better options than going with an Affinity.

@@TheMixWithABD $230 for this guitar on Amazon, shipped. Of course the frets aren’t going to be perfect, you have to pay more to buy more hands-on time at the factory for a decent fret job. Pickups? It’s a $230 guitar, there are Seymour Duncan Tele pickup sets that are more expensive than the entire guitar.
I’m not trying to convince you to like it, if you don’t you don’t and that’s fine. But it’s a really inexpensive guitar. If you were reviewing a Fender Player that had these kind of finish issues you’d have my attention, but stuff like imperfect fret inlays and the nut not being perfectly flush down the sides are all easily forgivable on a guitar at this price.

  • @drcdfellows
    @drcdfellows Місяць тому

It honestly isn't fair to review a guitar that hasn't been set up properly. Even guitars costing 5x the price need to be set up to play the way you want them to, and it's easy to do. Polishing and dressing the fets is a little more involved, but still doable. Well polished and dressed fets is one of those things you get by spending more money.
The pickups and the tuners on these guitars aren't great, but the guitar's MSRP is less than a quality set of pickups, so that really isn't surprising.
All of my current guitars are mid range guitars (1.5k-3k), and most of them are pretty tweaked out. I'm looking to buy this guitar to mod. It appears that most of the downsides of this guitar can be remedied with some time and modest upgrades. Should be fun

Spent around $150 for alnico pickups and maybe $13 for locking tuners, did all the work myself. It plays better than some of the +$1500 guitars I've owned and played in the past, when in total I maybe paid $500. The pots were completely fine and shielding wasn't a problem neither. Intonation was actually perfect out of the box (ordered online from Guitar Center), and the bridge- perfectly balanced with 9's to where it's set exactly how it needs to be.
If I had done nothing to the guitar, the sound (to my ear) would appear slightly muddy and I would have had to tune it every day before use (which is normal). Very solid build and I would have returned it if it wasn't worth the money. Even it's sustain is great: I can even shut off the noisegate and vibrato into a natural harmonic. That was something I couldn't do with an Ltd.
So overall, I saved a ton of money for a guitar that plays like a beast.

Those awesome really weird problems. Maybe they're not the greatest guitarist as far as sound goes. But as far as playability I have two tellies and a strat and the fit and finish on them is amazing, The electronics suck! But I don't really care since I don't play out much but it's weird that you have those problems on that guitar You're probably going to return it right? Try getting another one just to see what happened I'd be curious to watch that if you got another bad one then I would say something is going on at squire. Fender really should crack down on this crap. I mean their name is on the guitar there shouldn't let them go out to the public this bad. Shame on them. Oddly enough I decided to buy a custom vibe for like 450 bucks and that one sounds great but let me tell you everything else about the guitar is so bad that I just cannot believe it. The neck is either warped or twisted if I try to lower the action I'll be hitting a pickup with my strings. There's so much lacquer or whatever it is on the neck and the fretboard is just covered in it I'm going to have to scrape it off the frets I don't even know what the stuff is but I didn't return it in time so I'm stuck with it. I would love to send that one to you to dissect! But you know I guess if we all had enough money we would be buying fenders and not requires. Anyway I'm glad that you brought this to our attention. The only thing I can say is you got to go down to the store and buy it. Online buying is not going to work if they're going to let quality control fall to this level.
