I do want to say, I started playing last night and I did manage to catch the level 40 alpha Rapidash while still in the tutorial section. I talked enough to Akari where she wasn't in the way or holding me back from exploring any more, but was still standing around waiting for me to talk to her. I ran around leveling up my Pokemon and just catching as many new ones until I ran into that alpha Rapidash. At first I avoided it, until I managed to get my Pokemon into the 15 to 20 level range, then decided to try and take it on. The X was there in regards to catching it, so I just opted to fight it. After it wiped the floor with 3 of my Pokemon, I panicked a bit and tossed a regular ball at it in battle while it was at red health, and managed to catch it. I ended my night on that, and I'm now the proud of owner of a Rapidash that I can't command at this point in time.
I can’t wait to finally start this game in about 10 hours. These Spoiler Free videos are very helpful and entertaining. I also like to rewatch the Ultralocke whenever I’m playing Pokémon myself.
I wanted to use a Lucario on my team, and seeing that Alpha Lucario gave me hope. Using this guide, I was able to catch that same Alpha Lucario. Can't express how thankful I am for this guide.
With the short gap between BDSP and now PLA, I feel absolutely spoiled getting so many videos in such a short amount of time. Always informative, with clear explanations and no unnecessary padding. Thank you! 🙂
Started playing the game about 2 weeks ago going in completely blind, im now shy of just 2 non legendaries to complete the pokedex for captured pokemon and i did all alpha pokemon in combat style. Watching this i can't believe how much fun and convenience i missed by not learning about this part of the game beforehand. Had i known that the cakes made THAT MUCH of a difference, i'd have gone for that method all the way.
Now define "complete the pokedex" because there are three different levels of "completion", first way which I don't think most people would consider complete in this game is just catching them all once but that is it, second way would be getting rank 10 in all the pokemon getting the ball icon by them all which some people might consider complete, or the third and most time consuming way is maxing out each and every way to research switching that ball icon from being a plain old ball icon to being a shiny ball icon with the research rank of "perfect" when you check the dex. I can see reaching rank 2 of 3 of complettion of just balling all the pokemons entries up to rank 10 in a few weeks, but I would think that true completion of getting rank "perfect" on all of them would take a fair bit longer... judging by the fact that it sound like you didn't do much stealth I am guessing that you just mean getting ball icons by all pokemon entries and not getting shiny ball icons by all of them. It is one thing to get rank 10 on say Geodude via just catching 6 of them, defeating 4 of them 2 with grass moves and 2 with water moves to get rank 10 and the ball icon by it, but it is an entirely different thing to 25, 5 of which have to be heavy, defeat at bare minimum 40 20 with grass move kills and 20 with water move kills, see roll out 20 times, have it spawn from an ore deposit 25 times, and evolve 3 of them to get the ball icon replaced with a shiny ball icon with the word perfection on it. Let alone do that level of completion 242 times. While I don't plan on completing it any time soon my goal for the game isn't to beat the main story (though I will have to to get the legendaries) and it isn't to rank 10 all pokedex items, no no no, it is to get a shiny ball by all pokedex entries for true completion and not just technical completion. I have not really been "yes give me more of this please" with a pokemon game since Gold/Silver after gen 2 it kinda turned into the monster collecting version of Madden via minor minor updates with the same 2 games every generation. This was the first Pokemon game in a long time that I actually want to truly 100% even if it takes me a long time slowly chipping away at it, it is just such a disappointment that the next gen pokemon went back to copy/paste Madden style Pokemon of old, I am hoping that is just both games were made at the same time by two different teams and so S/V team hadn't seen Legends when they made theirs because I haven't wanted any more old school Pokemon in a very long time, but the huge shift of "gotta Stockholm syndrome them all into submission by beating them within an inch of their life and then forcing them into slavery" to a more scientific studying standpoint even if you do beat half of them to an inch of their life to give them Stockholm to get them to serve you, you are doing it in a more scientific way that just makes way more sense lore wise and makes for more fun game play mechanic wise other than the goal of being the number one " 'roster' fighter in the world" because let's be fair the original lore of capture creatures and make them fight is just glorified "roster" fighting. And no I am not saying all the games since Gold/Silver have been bad, I am just saying they haven't really had that hook to make me want to play more, they were all good standalone games, where you could play any of them and enjoy yourself, but they are terrible games as far as making you want to play every single game and every single story because you play one you have played them all.

I had no clue about the grain cakes being so effective. I've been catching alphas without battling the same way just without grain cakes which are now my my tech. Thank you
Regarding the Star locked alphas: It seems once you've got the Stars to progress to the next area (not necessarily that you've UNLOCKED the next area, just that you have the stars to allow the guards to let you travel there once you do unlock it) you'll be able to catch the Alphas that are part of the regular spawn pool, like the Rapidash. If the pokemon spawns there normally its catchable as soon as you're a high enough star level (usually one or two stars over the access limit) for others, like a certain snorlax, you actually have to be 3 stars or higher (in a 0-1 star zone) to successfully catch it, regardless of strats or items
@@kctrooper24 you're not bad, Snorlax actually has great defensive stats in this game, plus as an alpha it's boosted a bit further. I think it's moveset is very well balanced for a wild pokemon as well. it's one of the toughest early alphas i've come across.
I love the new catch mechanics!! This was really helpful for the alphas thank you!! I’ve been playing Pokémon games since Pokémon yellow and while I love the other method this one is so fun for me. It feels so fresh and new!! It’s play your own way but that is actually friendly to any type of play style!!!
There's a more expensive way to catch alphas as well, I use feather balls and it turns out the max range a feather ball is able to catch a pokemon is further than the aggro range/sight range of MOST alphas. Therefore you can stay crouched out of the alpha's aggro range and in the range of the feather ball and spam the feather balls until you catch them. 1st ball, if unsuccessful, they run away and turn around everytime, unless you are really close they just fight you, just take a few steps toward the alpha to readjust (you can check by throwing some balls as you take steps forward until it catches instead of bonking them). After that, as long as you are at that sweet spot, they wont move at all. They will just sit there and stare at you with a "!" then "..." icon. The only alpha that has insane detection range that I've found was Garchomp, every other alpha has not detected me at max featherball range. (This is expensive because this can cost alot of feather balls until you are successful, most I've used on one alpha was 26 balls, sometimes you might not even need to use more than 5)

Your video here was the first one that popped up and I am so glad it did 🎉! This was a game changer and I am enjoying the game so much more! Big hugs my dude.
I've noticed the less likely the catch is to be sucessful, the more it shakes and the higher it goes, like I noticed in othr videos most pokeballs only shake once and barely lift off the ground on low level common pokemon but bigger pokemon get 2 shakes or three, and from those 3 shakes videos I've noticed half break free, for example, lucario in this video shake 2 times and the symbol was green, but blissey and heracross only once.
Yup, I've seen it. When the jump is very short, you've got it, but it actually can also happen when it's at medium jump, I got an alpha at a medium jump pokeball
You don't need to go into the menu to throw pokéballs during combat. Your ZR works in combat just like outside, meaning you just go through your items with L/R and throw a pokéball, or hit X, cycle through your 'mons with L/R and then ZR does a switch.
Very educational. I am about to start my own PLA in a few hours (gonna rush to the store to purchase one) and the most basic knowledge of catching a Pokemon is very much needed. Thank you for the guide. Hopefully I can put them to good use
I’ve just been treating catching like the regular games, I use false swipe & thunder wave. It works fairly well but it has its flaws, mainly ghost types & recoil moves. Plus Pokémon hit so hard so I’m forced to lose half my team each time I want an alpha. So after failing to catch a torterra a few times due to recoil I went to the item storage to use these items for the first time. It worked perfectly, even with the first couple of pokeballs failing the smoke bomb did its job.

Thank you so much for explaining the level restrictions. I just started and I spent so long trying to catch the rapidash because the color turned slightly brighter. You saved me from wasting even more time so thank you
Imagine a game like this, but as an MMO… a massive world, so you wouldn’t be running into 20 people every step, but when you do you can push one button and force them into battle! As if YOU are the trainers on a route. If neither of you trigger it, nothing happens and you can just run on by. But you could push a button to “lock eyes”. How cool would that be?! And the game of course would only match you with trainers of your level, and that would mean trainers have levels as well as Pokémon. Just a spitball idea, a lot would have to be thought through extensively. But the idea is there
I love that you can work these things out in game, by experimentation, rather than needing to search on the internet. That catch rate indicator is a really effective bit of UI design.
I might have misunderstood you but I watched someone spend 3 hours on stream catch a shiny alpha rapidash. She was very early game and her max level pokemon was level 11, she poisoned it with a level 6 wurmple. Also thank you for all your work to bring us the most accurate information you can
5 more hours for me!!!! I’m so excited!!!!! I’ve been able to avoid almost all story spoilers so far for the first time ever and It’s made me so much more excited!!! I normally play games like these by doing as many side quests as I can as they unlock. Would this be doable in this game or is it better to do side quests later?
Thank you for this awesome video Austin! I always enjoy your content, and honestly the videos on Arceus has gotten me even more excited to play tomorrow! 😆
Thank you so much for these videos. They are going to be so helpful for this game. As for my play style, I am going to try the stealth style to avoid battle and avoiding knocking out Pokemon, which I hate that. Only times I would battle is getting research. And yes I will be starting with Rowlett, the Owl pokemon. Some other youtuber suggested the water starter, but I think Rowlett is better since it can learn a variety of moves of different elements. Although technical that does not really matter since you can find a good variety of Pokemon out there. I will most likely play the heck out of this game and having a good story is an excellent bonus, finally a Pokemon game with an engaging story. Also with all kind of neat and useful features, I hope the creators might use them in future Pokemon games, AND make GOOD stories.
I'M SO EXCITED TO PICK UP MY COPY TOMORROW! I'm intentionally staying up late tonight so I can sleep in until I can pick my copy up tomorrow afternoon.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is very different from the other past Pokemon games because sometime a trainer need to dodge a wild Pokemon's attack instead the usual Pokemon battle to weaken a wild Pokemon before catching it. Watch some of the video on UA-cam of how to dodge even the legendary Pokemon like Palkia, Dialga, Giratina and Arceus is really hard as it reminds me one of Nintendo sitch games like Zelda and Mario.
Austin you’re super clutch for this video my guy. Thank you for this! This will save me the ass pain of constantly resetting from failed capture attempts…
Goodness, I am so used to the older games where majority of the items are so useless that I fall into a bit of a bad habit. But almost everything is useful now, the smoke bombs, the mud balls, and I was slowly catching onto the food. But this is tutorial was definitely helpful, thank you.
You can throw Pokemon balls during a battle without going into your inventory. Just press x, scroll to ball you want, then press zr. Same works for switching Pokemon during a battle.
Just got the game and started yesterday . Ran into a alpha Ponyta in the starting area whole team got wiped and I even tried catching another one after a while I figured they couldn’t be caught Thank you
No lie dude, I searched through so many different PLA videos, and your videos have been the most helpful, by far. I appreciate the time and research you've put into these. +1 sub
Austin FYI I was able to catch a level 70 Alpha Gardevoir while only being able to control up to Level 65, so not sure if what you said toward the beginning applies. Great video though I learned a lot!
Another thing I didn’t see the game explain. Pertains to battling multiple Pokémon at the same time. 1, you can infact catch a Pokémon even though there are 2 still fighting! You don’t have to knock one out first. Secondly, you can choose which Pokémon you’re targeting by pressing L/R! It’ll switch targets. So you can weaken them both into red with strong style, and then use agile and take them both out with like a quick attack. Very useful. And unless I skipped it, I don’t think the game tells you that. (Or it tells you later on)
Just get the fast ball and throw it at the save distance while sneaking. If it break the ball and didn't detect you, it will run alway a little bit. Keep throwing balls while sneaking close until you able to catch it again, then stop and keep throwing balls until you catch them, this time they won't run away (note the "..." above it's head).
Got another for you. If you want to easily catch a legendary without battling(good for creselia that heals). They wont take food(afaik). So craft a bunch of sticky globs, & start throwing them at the pokemon once its attacking your trainer. Once stunned, run behind it & use a megaton/ultra ball.
I agree with Switch Rick.....can't wait to start playing this game...unfortunately I have to wait till I get home from work. Thanks for all the the non-spoiler video's Austin John.
ty for the vid...i honestly thought that raising my star lvl up Cy would tell me like "OH you can catch alpha mons now" so i raised it to 7 and never tried to catch an alpha....super helpful TY again
The second i got that 1st star I got those 30 heavy balls and spent half an hour to get that level 40 rapidash - zero regrets. Not even using him, he just chilling. Took everyone from level 4 (8 starter) to 14-16 in one go.
There is also another way to catch alpha pokemon without the need of having multiple stars. You need to engage in a pokemon battle and lower their health, once doing that you'll have a higher chance in catching them. I was able to catch a level 61 Vespiquen while only have two stars. With proper planning it is possible to catch them early in game.
Can’t wait for someone to do a no battles/only stealth catches PLA gameplay, would be fun to watch!

Just a spitball idea, a lot would have to be thought through extensively. But the idea is there
I love that you can work these things out in game, by experimentation, rather than needing to search on the internet. That catch rate indicator is a really effective bit of UI design.
thank you so much for these guides, they really help!
I might have misunderstood you but I watched someone spend 3 hours on stream catch a shiny alpha rapidash. She was very early game and her max level pokemon was level 11, she poisoned it with a level 6 wurmple. Also thank you for all your work to bring us the most accurate information you can
Thank u AJ. This is super helpful for me and everyone. THANK YOU!!!
Grain cakes for the win. Seriously though I hope they keep this as a capture option in future games.
4 for me
It's pretty doable, though sometimes you get quests for the next area
I've been playing the game for hours have 4 stars and did not realize you could strait up catch these like this. My God you made my day!
I truly love that 25 years into playing these games we are still having to learn stuff like this
When you missed and hit the Bidoof......i cracked man! It reminded me the episode with the Belsprout!
Just started playing, already loving it.
I finally just got this game last Saturday! I've been avoiding videos like the plague until now 😂😂
Thank you so much for the tips!
Can't wait for my copy to arrive :)
It's good to be back man, I last saw you for Legend of Zelda. Didn't see much of your SWSH. But thanks for the video.
Austin! Could you tell us if we get more EXP for battling and catching than stealthing it out?
My game will be delivered while I’m at school today. Can’t wait to wind down with some PLA after school!
🔥🔥🔥
First again
Again? You’re on fire!
3 now!
Bruh wow
Youre killing me
I've been playing this game wrong. Such a helpful video. I've been rushing and playing it too much like other Pokemon games.
I'M SO EXCITED TO PICK UP MY COPY TOMORROW!
I'm intentionally staying up late tonight so I can sleep in until I can pick my copy up tomorrow afternoon.
I currently have 4 shiny alphas: kricketune, stantler, spiritomb, and rhyperior
5:05 never would I have witnessed a bidoof performing a “mr president get down” maneuver in this game
When you spot an alpha Pokémon:
>>"Finally! My years of Metal Gear experience comes into play."
Goodness, I am so used to the older games where majority of the items are so useless that I fall into a bit of a bad habit.
But almost everything is useful now, the smoke bombs, the mud balls, and I was slowly catching onto the food.
But this is tutorial was definitely helpful, thank you.
This is super helpful. I’ve been ignoring all the extra stuff like food and smoke bombs but I’m convinced
You can throw Pokemon balls during a battle without going into your inventory. Just press x, scroll to ball you want, then press zr. Same works for switching Pokemon during a battle.
Austin thank you so much for these tutorials. I don't have that much free time to game, but your tutorials really help me enjoy the time I do have
Just got the game and started yesterday . Ran into a alpha Ponyta in the starting area whole team got wiped and I even tried catching another one after a while I figured they couldn’t be caught
Thank you
finally, some actual helpful tip that isn’t copied and pasted everywhere in every video
1:20 Shinx's face AHAHAHAHAH as if *Shix is paralyised* I'm sold
You make the absolute best most informative videos, I love it and thank you very much!
as always.. your videos are very informative and useful! Thanks!
(Or it tells you later on)
This is perfect for me seeing as I have OCD about all my Pokémon being in regular pokeballs.
Austin John! Love the content! 2M subscribers!?! amazing.. You can thank me for watching literally 10s of your videos... make me feel special . . .
Just get the fast ball and throw it at the save distance while sneaking. If it break the ball and didn't detect you, it will run alway a little bit. Keep throwing balls while sneaking close until you able to catch it again, then stop and keep throwing balls until you catch them, this time they won't run away (note the "..." above it's head).
austin i’m begging you please stop calling it back shots. i’m not giving pokemon back shots 😂
Just got my copy, and I feel so ready thanks to your videos!
These guides are super helpful, thank you. would you consider posting a full play though on the channel? I'd love to see it
The game came out and I've been playing it for 3 hrs since Midnight. Switch is now charging. I've been having a blast and enjoying the game.
I agree with Switch Rick.....can't wait to start playing this game...unfortunately I have to wait till I get home from work. Thanks for all the the non-spoiler video's Austin John.
Honestly man you turned me onto the game, I preordered it today just because your vids make it look engaging and not as intimidating or tedious
I have 4 hours left until I can play! Every vid you post makes me more and more excited!!!
Thanks a lot for explaining! I had quite the rage moments and waste of ultra balls so far, now it'll be more engaging
ty for the vid...i honestly thought that raising my star lvl up Cy would tell me like "OH you can catch alpha mons now" so i raised it to 7 and never tried to catch an alpha....super helpful TY again
So like every other pokemon game in the past 30 years.
So excited to play this, unfortunately though amazon has delayed orders in the uk due to shipment issues
