Hi, Oli, thank you again for this very short and sweet but informative video clip. In Seremban, Malaysia, where I grew up, there is a wet market with a similar set up. Well, it's almost identical because of the Chinese community in this part of Malaysia. I'm really grateful that this clip is again under 15 mins, just right for me to share with my schoolmates of Chinese descent but who do not read or write Chinese and also with my relatives in Guangdong. Love the way you present us, our culture and our homeland to the rest of the world (even though I'm Malaysian.) The parks are awesome, indeed. I love this wholesome video (and handsome host). Thanks again for this truly well done job. Keep up the good work. Regards, Jeremy 趙耀勝 (赵耀胜) p/s Don't forget to speak and sing in Chinese. 🎼🎵🎶🎤😜

0:02 CNY158 per catty (1.1 pound) of Dungeness crab in a Tier 3 city like Xiamen. This price is double of what it cost in Los Angeles. I am shocked also.
Actually china has so many population in a large area so people from different regions actually have very different local cultures. For the snake eating culture, you can find them in Canton province while xiamen was localed in Fujian province. I am living in hongkong and the wet markets here have plenty frogs and snakes~ instead of call the people barbarian, i think it reflected the poverty and starvation happened several times in China's history. When people are hungry and dying, they will try anything that look eatable....
I think much of the fruit in supermarkets in the uk is picked weeks before put on the shelf, they whack it into cold storage until they need to put it on the shelf, the phrase “ready to eat” or “ripens in the bowl” make me laugh as some isn’t ripe or won’t ripen in the bowl 😏 Londons tube prices 😂 single journey is like £2:40 min but will rocket up if you come from further out and head into zone one. Xiamen is a beautiful port city!! you should have eaten some seafood! Did my Quarantine there, and we got seafood for our meals😉 Great video on clearing up all the misconceptions about China! Keep it up!
to me its like going the butchers really, but everything is fresh and still alive well mostly lol.. fish head tbh im not found of it, doesnt look appertising and i think ive tried the cheek and someone tough guy ate the eye ball.. i was like yeh , not great, but chinese is all about not wasting anything, you see cultures that kill the food also respect the animal or food. that sounds crazy to someone who gets it packaged, but thats the part people are missing out, if you have to do the killing or see it, then you learn to respect its life and be grateful and thankful for it, cuase tbh its sad animals do understand and feel.. but they taste to damn good lol.. eventually one day i will quit meat but long way away yet.. i mean if people dont realise burgers sausages chicken nuggets all the stuff people love in teh west, are made from these heads eyes balls and bits people dont want to eat, so youre eating it anyway. chinese are very no nonsense so our thought or their thought is more like grow some balls ffs. its what i always was told when i as a kid scared to try something.. and tbh now ill try anything other than worms, bugs or anything slimey like that,,, spiders, cats and dogs is a defo no.... and rats or bats.. what makes it rediculous about the virus lie, is chinese are very well aware which stuff is lets say dirty,,, stuff like rats and bats, bugs ect pests, most wont touch them, they carry diseases.. if they were really poor 40 years ago maybe had no choice then maybe but it wouldnt be a choice .. i mean people in china are scared to eat meat from alot of the street vendors which are now kinda illegal, cause they worry it could be rat meat.. chinese is a food culture very aware of whats good and not. but wastefulness not in the sense of left overs at restaurants but when an animal is killed respect it and use it if it can be used.. and textures tastes everything has different textures, is like french gourmet chefs, theyll use all kind of strange stuff for the texture and effects. Chinese is a VEry VEry food orientated culture.. im glad olli kinda understands more now hes been there , cause i dont live in china but ive been around chinese family where we ate stuff like crabs lobsters, that had to be butchered, i mean its only really last 20 years or so this stuffs more mainstream in the west.. like 12 year old kids can gut and prepare a fish in china.. id love to see one of my mates even try without screaming hahahhaha. from a western perspective of it being cruel or looking unclean.. to chinese point of view its like very pompous and weak slightly ignorant too... like you can tell alot about a person by what they eat, and what they are willing to try... those that stick to one dish and never try anything, i garauntee you they are very selfish and ignornat people.... its psychologically proven with people with eating disorders.. lets not judge each other aye and learn to understand one another.
Respecting the animal by using every part was very much the belief in rural England, exactly as you said. I think that these days most of the parts rejected by humans go into pet food. Pigs ears & rolled up raw hide are on sale as dog chews. In my childhood there were few urban house pets & no commercial pet food. Dogs & cats were common in the country & had "jobs" usually controlling vermin, They were fed scraps but were very healthy, rarely getting sick , lived to ripe old age when wormed regularly. Probably much healthier psychologically than cooped up indoors, getting bored. The problem for us, is that the meat on sale is the more expensive cuts, rapidly becoming less affordable, & younger people don't know how to cook them now.
oh my god, man, you really understand us Chinese! as if you are just one of us. (although I also don't eat weird things such as organs or fish heads etc.)
@@jojochau5950 ive tried it once the cheek cause an uncle was saying its good, so i tried it, but ive enver seen it as a consistant thing ever.. my dad my mum nobody eats it, but ive asked them if theyve tried they said yes then explain it, and say its nice but nobody bothers to eat it.. ive seen like i say in my whole life eaten once, and fish is often cooked whole.. chinese dont really behead the fish, but most dont eat it.. i think it can be used for soup ect so you get the taste and its not wasted but, totally i dont eat it, but ive tried it in a restaurant when we all sat around and waiting chatting, and one uncle acts tough and tests us cause normally peopole wont try it.. so i did.. organs though are nothing, like liver kidney get that all in the west and tripe, i love tripe chinese cantonese style.. but British ate tripe.. also if you ever seen some traditional british dishes, ones a pie british are pastry pies pasties ect... its a fish pie, where its baked with like 10 fish heads poking out the pastry lol.. if anything that doesnt look appertising. i forget what its called.. but eat alot of it down south.

In My hometown PanYu Which is a district city of GuangZhou we do eat snake in winter. But it's not those snake you see in the wild it's more tiny and farmed in a way artificially. China is such a interesting place to visit Where people live and eat so differently to each other and that brings so much fun to explore. Oli seems such an opened minded youtuber get along so well in China. Really Hope that to see u in real person when i back to China
Hope xiamen and fujian as a whole improves even more in the future where it can be on the same level as guandong/greater bay area or shianghai, it will only probably happen after taiwan-mainland reunification, my grandpa and all my other ancestors came from xiamen and the surrounding towns and I hope to go visit the place again.
Hope u can make it when COVID 19 less serious! I was burned in Hong Kong and visited Xiamen few years ago found very good memory , want to visit it again if don’t need to be quarantined.
Actually ,This place Oli showed is an only old market in Xiamen with a history of over 100years. Most of markets in Xiamen have been turned to be supermarkets just like Western city. This scene you may see in old street as well but rarely see now.
Thanks for a video into a corner of the real China. There are a lot of fun things around the wet markets but to be honest I do hope the hygiene condition can be improved.
an important reason food are cut to small pieces is that small pieces canbe quickly got cooked under a big fire (where large portions are easily scorched on its surface and still raw inside) and they can absorb more juices & sauces. You may find some dishes are even cut into thin strips e.g. tofu, bamboo shoots
Fantastic! Really enjoyed this video! Thank you! Great views, love metro systems. Used the HK metro all the time pre-covid. I'm American Chinese, with limited Cantonese skills, worry the cabbie would take me in circles & charge more, hahaha!
There is a seafood restaurant in Xiamen, an all-you-can eat kind of deal. There are UA-cam vlogs from foodie bloggers. The food looked fantastic. Ask locals and check it out.
holy shit , So familiar, haha , I often doing running in this park near my home, Oli you just came to my the community , it was near the crystal Lake county 水晶湖郡 where my home is! that is predestined relationship!
Oli, you were also at a wet market last time, and you said in front of the (卤菜) owner of a stall: "You smell so bad here!", they will at least give you a "白眼" if you are not a foreigner. You enjoy the enthusiasm of the Chinese, but you are always like a "gentleman", afraid of staining your shoes, which is not good
chicken breast is actually the least favorite part for chinese taste, first of all, it does not have an interesting texture, the consistency is kinda like softer version of cement, you will fall asleep when chewing them. Secondly, it is the least flavorful part of the entire chicken and it is just a big chunk of flavorless meat
5 chicken breast for 20 rmb whereas in a shanghai convience store or supermarket, a mars bar costs 20 rmb or a small haagen dazs icecream cup costs 40 rmb
In the west they eat "recovered meat" which is made from the slurry (called white slime) blasted from the bones left over after the good bits have been taken off and then forced through a sieve to remove the bones. The psste is then mixed with some chemicals and flavouring and reformed into "chicken slices" or "ham" or used in sausages, etc. While you might imagine you are buying an actual boned leg of a pig, often they are really made from cuts from several different animals that are stuck together in a factory. Next time you buy a packet of chicken slices, check how much chicken is on it. Probably less than 90%. Chinese scorn such abominations, but is staple for many westerners. Disgusting!
Nah ... I'll take a Firebolt over a Nimbus 2000 any day. By the way, it wasn't very long ago that the English ate almost everything a cow or swine can offer. You've have to be insane to waste any edible parts in those days, unless you were part of the gentry or aristocrats.
Yes if you are going to kill a farm animal then every part of the meat is used and the offal bones etc used for fertiliser, not like cutting the fin of the shark and not eating the rest of the body
@@joe2395 I agree that shark fin is a rather vulgar one that ought to be banned - in all honesty younger Chinese these days don't fancy that 'delicacy'. Social awareness and public attitude can shift rapidly in China too - it would've been, for example, almost unthinkable to completely ban fishing in the Yangtze for 10 years if you were to ask people in the mid 2000s; now, it's almost common sense to support it for the sake of biodiversity restoration.
@@edukid1984 yes exactly, our oceans have to be looked after like everything else, like these factory fishing methods where the ocean floors are destroyed by the drag nets ,waters must be monitored and if the numbers of fish has declined then fishing is banned till they recover 👍

非常羨慕您們在這疫情期間,還能行走中國哪麼多地方。haha, you make me so jealous. Anyway keep moving and share us the china stories. Bless you everyday and everything are good. 💪💪💪😁😁😁

Amazing place...Xiamen ! Beautiful video there Oli 😊 yah , d place is so peaceful. Abt d fish cheek n even d pig's cheek , they're d most tender part of d whole thing n not fat at all. If u're served w/ fish head dat is an honor in our culture coz normally it is served to d most elder in d family like d father. Oh u shld try d FISH LIP SOUP😃😃, Bird's Nest soup 😃😃. Every culture has it's own food specialty n it's not something to be "weird" of unless u are very very closed-minded n ignorant to d max(because of brainwashing n not travelling to many diff places in d world)! Appreciate very much ur effort son , in bringing different people together n just enjoy our uniqueness which makes life exciting 😃🙄😉
Once you know about fish you definitely accept fish head for soup.

haha interesting, Good job Barrett
your old man may remember Ken Hom Chinese Cookery on BBC years ago 😂
Actually china has so many population in a large area so people from different regions actually have very different local cultures. For the snake eating culture, you can find them in Canton province while xiamen was localed in Fujian province. I am living in hongkong and the wet markets here have plenty frogs and snakes~ instead of call the people barbarian, i think it reflected the poverty and starvation happened several times in China's history. When people are hungry and dying, they will try anything that look eatable....
HK wet markets have frogs?? i bet those are green frogs imported from taiwan right?
I dun sure it called frog or toad to be exact... in chinese田雞
@@sephiroth99999 You are funny😁😁
footage well shot, very picturesque!
I think much of the fruit in supermarkets in the uk is picked weeks before put on the shelf, they whack it into cold storage until they need to put it on the shelf, the phrase “ready to eat” or “ripens in the bowl” make me laugh as some isn’t ripe or won’t ripen in the bowl 😏
Londons tube prices 😂 single journey is like £2:40 min but will rocket up if you come from further out and head into zone one.

Not if you go to a farm shop or farm markets
@@joe2395 Yeah very true, shame there isn’t more of them.
Why don't you pick it yourself? We sometimes go to the farm to pick it for the sake of not losing nutrition. You know that some nutrition will be lost a few minutes after picking.

Xiamen is a beautiful port city!! you should have eaten some seafood!
Did my Quarantine there, and we got seafood for our meals😉
Great video on clearing up all the misconceptions about China! Keep it up!

好久没来了,现在的视频质量真是不错。点赞,Well done
to me its like going the butchers really, but everything is fresh and still alive well mostly lol.. fish head tbh im not found of it, doesnt look appertising and i think ive tried the cheek and someone tough guy ate the eye ball.. i was like yeh , not great, but chinese is all about not wasting anything, you see cultures that kill the food also respect the animal or food. that sounds crazy to someone who gets it packaged, but thats the part people are missing out, if you have to do the killing or see it, then you learn to respect its life and be grateful and thankful for it, cuase tbh its sad animals do understand and feel.. but they taste to damn good lol.. eventually one day i will quit meat but long way away yet..
i mean if people dont realise burgers sausages chicken nuggets all the stuff people love in teh west, are made from these heads eyes balls and bits people dont want to eat, so youre eating it anyway. chinese are very no nonsense so our thought or their thought is more like grow some balls ffs. its what i always was told when i as a kid scared to try something.. and tbh now ill try anything other than worms, bugs or anything slimey like that,,, spiders, cats and dogs is a defo no.... and rats or bats.. what makes it rediculous about the virus lie, is chinese are very well aware which stuff is lets say dirty,,, stuff like rats and bats, bugs ect pests, most wont touch them, they carry diseases.. if they were really poor 40 years ago maybe had no choice then maybe but it wouldnt be a choice .. i mean people in china are scared to eat meat from alot of the street vendors which are now kinda illegal, cause they worry it could be rat meat.. chinese is a food culture very aware of whats good and not. but wastefulness not in the sense of left overs at restaurants but when an animal is killed respect it and use it if it can be used.. and textures tastes everything has different textures, is like french gourmet chefs, theyll use all kind of strange stuff for the texture and effects.
When you lived through hunger and famine you tend to not waste.
I didn't finish your comment, but i gave you a thumb up after i read the part you said about respecting the animal.
Xiamen is a beautiful, wonderful city!
Welcome Barrett to Xiamen, China. Although Xiamen is only a second-tier city in China, the scenery is very good and it is next to the sea. I have stayed here for many years.
Xiamen is one of the most beautiful seashore cities in China.
So is Sanya, unfortunately, Sanya has become too commercialized.
@@simonking3949 Sorry Sanya is not culturally sophisticated yet. It is just rush-built with money and there is very little attractions formulated by time and by locals.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My views is based on what i can see on the "surface". After all, there is no way one can see the "soul" of any given city by just visiting the place for a couple of days.
snake soup is very very delicious, when i was a child i tried, and now i miss it a lot
希望台湾人民早日认清现实,不要再被政府洗脑,早日回归,一起建设祖国,一起繁荣昌盛。
Thanks for a video into a corner of the real China. There are a lot of fun things around the wet markets but to be honest I do hope the hygiene condition can be improved.
an important reason food are cut to small pieces is that small pieces canbe quickly got cooked under a big fire (where large portions are easily scorched on its surface and still raw inside) and they can absorb more juices & sauces. You may find some dishes are even cut into thin strips e.g. tofu, bamboo shoots
Your Chinese has improved tremendously. Great job.

Thanks you , you let me know China 's have the normal life,no more panic about pandemic 👍

the market is a great place for me to try to speak chinese
In your opinion 😆 breast and leg are my favourite parts
I’ll pay to see you fall sleep on that piece of Brest ... 😂 but I get your point.
的確很多人不喜歡吃雞胸肉😄😄有些人只是為健康,才強迫自己吃。

Video of you eating fish head next I reckon! The cheek is tasty not gonna lie
I'll give it a try... Some time
expert cook can make fish head extremely delicious. But basically that's a kind of fish whose head is really big (almost 2/5 of their body).
Lovely Seafood scene!
Do people notice how many trees you see in the views of Chinese cities. It did surprise me when I first went there.
5 chicken breast for 20 rmb whereas in a shanghai convience store or supermarket, a mars bar costs 20 rmb or a small haagen dazs icecream cup costs 40 rmb
Welcome to my hometown and enjoy yummy food !
fish head is very nutritional which my mom told me. we also think kids who eat fish head can be wiser.
Xiamen is so BEAUTIFUL 😘
wow! my lovely home town!
Thank you
I love Chinese wet markets too
In the west they eat "recovered meat" which is made from the slurry (called white slime) blasted from the bones left over after the good bits have been taken off and then forced through a sieve to remove the bones. Disgusting!
The French eats fish head too. It's used in Fish soup.
It was within my life time, & tastes delicious when cooked well, but can't get most of it even from a butcher now.
