  • If you're absolutely confused, but want a simplified explanation of the 3-hour-long history lesson that Vladmir Putin gave Tucker Carlson, let me break it down for you K-drama style. After poring through the transcript of Tucker Carlson's interview with Vladimir Putin, I realized he was like a Korean ajusshi pontificating on the world. It's really the only way to be able to piece together Putin's historical argument into a coherent whole.

Back when he invaded Ukraine, everybody here was asking: Why?
If you listened to world historians at that time, they were giving indepth historical background to the points Putin was making relating to Russian history, NATO countries in Europe, accepting Ukraine into NATO, and how much of a direct threat to Russia that would be. And also the point that he was making relating to Nazis in Ukraine. This also has to do with the flow of oil reserves to Russia and those pathways not being blocked by NATO countries.
This also gives some insight and credibility as to why Putin (from his perspective) feels the need to align with China and N. Korea.

I am a Finnish person and to give a Finnish point of view on the matter.. (We share 1350 km's boarder with Russia and they have had wars on our land many times in history and even when we finally became independent, Russia attacked us during the 2nd WW and took part of our land, so that 420 000 Finnish people had to leave their homes and everything they owned to Russians and flee to the side of Finland what was still left for us after a bloody war..) So..
When Putin this time attacked Ukraine, it was like history repeating itself. Russians making up a story why they need to invade someone elses land and space and then going with tanks and guns to do that. Untill that day the clear majority of Finnish people were opposing us joing the NATO, to stay in the between and not clearly take parts, trying to have good realtions with both Russia and the US to maintain the peace and stability. But the day Putin decided to go over the boarder and show that he has no respect for legitimate states and boarders, the views on NATO in Finland changed in few days. Putin showed us that the mind of the Russian leaders have not changed during the past decades, they still think they can rule anyone around them as they wish. So around 90% of Finnish people then decided that we are going to join NATO. Those countries will not threaten our indepency unlike Russia has shown to do so many times in history - to other countries and to us too.
So now when Putin is saying that "Finland joined NATO because bad US dragged and tricked them to do so", it is complete BS. We joined because he attacked Ukraine. Had he not done it (or attacked another country), I don't think we would ever have joined. So if he is now crying about it, having suddenly 1350 km's more boarder with NATO, it is 100% his own fault. If you are an attacker and do not respect other nations, then you get what you begged for. So if you ever hear him say, "somebody else dragged or tricked Finland to join NATO". It is a BIG LIE. We wanted to stay out of it, but he left us no other choice.

@@TheProudWife515 Where do the profilers come into it? My opinion (and that’s not something I want to force on others) in this instance is that we don’t need to understand Putin to know what sort of monster he is. Political opponents ‘fall’ from windows, get poisoned, or have an explosion on their planes. We can’t trust HIS WORDS - they are far removed from the reality of his actions. We could listen til our ears fall off to no avail.
Putin is now saying he wants talks with Zelensky towards peace … but no trust can be built to establish peace unless a genuine relationship and commitment is established. (That’s where a relationship comes into my comment).
Talk is cheap but action shows what is truth. (If you care to, watch a UA-cam clip called ‘History of Vladimir Putin’ on John Coogan’s channel. It sets out Putin’s recent behaviours very clearly and is well worth watching).

Your dissection and explanation of Tucker's interview with Putin is so important. I lived through the Cold War where the events you mentioned were current events in my history class. One thing about history, the ghosts of the past continue to haunt when there are unresolved issues. They key to having a position or reaching a resolution is an educated citizenry. Unfortunately, citizens place all the power and decision making into the hands of leaders.
Russia acts the victim but their main objective is to expand beyond Ukraine which presents a threat to the European states, and also Asian countries with the help of China and North Korea.
Russia joining NATO is like a wolf having access to the chicken coop. Trump's latest comments align with Putin's lecture to Tucker. Cooinky-dink? I don't think so.

I think everyone should remember that Tucker was not on his home turf, and mindful that he was interviewing the President of Russia, who runs a tight ship. I also believe that Tucker wasn’t expecting Putin to directly answer any tough questions, but certainly not a class in Russian history. Under the circumstances, It wasn’t a matter of Tucker having circles being run around him. He couldn’t get too aggressive, after all. The current U.S. Administration hates him, and if Tucker ended up in a gulag for aggressively criticizing or pressuring the macho leader for answers, I think he could conveniently be “forgotten”, and he would become very fluent in the Russian language after a few years.
Now that the interview is over, Putin is claiming that he expected more hardball questions from Tucker, which, in my opinion, is a typical response. Tucker presented what questions he could, but there’s no way he was going to be flip enough to demand concrete answers. I commend Tucker for having the guts to go for the interview, and allow people to see this side of Putin. One that some of his harshest critics would have given their eye teeth to get.

Sean, Excellent coverage and insights, as always. Mr Tucker Carlson's combative questioning, as seen during his Fox News days, was nowhere to be found. It wasn't a hard-hitting interview. We have seen and heard all of this before. Nothing new. The interview started with over 25 minutes of a revisionist history lesson. Mr Putin's calculated charm and dominance counted on Mr Carlson's lack of historical knowledge. Mr Carlson never fact-checked the state-centred and revisionist history, nor did he help his position by comparing the Russia-Ukraine war to a "border dispute." He could quickly have challenged Mr Putin's narrative by using historical facts such as:
    1. The old narrative that Russia as a state began its development in the 9th Century is established mythology by Muscovite tsars, who allegedly traced their lineage back to the Rurik Dynasty to justify their imperial hold over Ukraine. Ukraine also began its development in the 9th Century, precisely with the same evidence and documents.
    2. It may be true that Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians "came from the same stock." They, through time, developed into different people. Using a 20th-century concept based on protecting a defined nation as something that goes back is misleading. Mr Putin claimed that areas in the south and east of Ukraine "had no historical connection with Ukraine whatsoever," which serves his interests, as they are precisely the areas that Russia is attempting to conquer in a decade-long conflict with Ukraine. Conquered from the Ottoman Empire by the Russian Empress Catherine the Great in the 17th Century, the Russian president stated that these lands were rightfully Russian. He later called them "Novorossiya" (New Russia), an 18th-century term. The "Novorossiya" area includes Crimea, annexed from Ukraine in 2014, Kherson, Mariupol and Bakhmut, which Mr Putin declared part of Russia in 2022. However, when Russia conquered these lands, the inhabitants of these lands were neither Russian nor Ukrainian but Ottoman, Tatar, or Cossacks. Slavic peasants who had fled to the frontiers.
    3. Mr Putin claimed that Ukraine is an artificial state because it received lands to which it had no historical claim; it was created by Stalin and the Soviet leadership in the 1920s and is not a real country because it was formed in its modern form in the 20th Century. He is correct in that the Soviet leadership drew up the borders of Soviet republics just like the Western colonial powers drew up borders around the world. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean that Ukrainians did not exist. Countries are created due to historical processes. Russia was created by the Russian tsars, who colonised Siberia, Central Asia, West Europe, the Caucasus region, the Ottoman and Persian empires. The reality is that if Ukraine is a fake country, then so is Russia and other countries. Similarly, Mr Carson could have mentioned Mr Putin's 5,000-word thesis, "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians," published on 12 July 2021.
    4. Mr Putin claims that Poland collaborated with Hitler, and by refusing to surrender the Danzig Corridor, Poland pushed Hitler to start World War II. This is untrue, as shown by historical records. While there were diplomatic contacts between Poland and the Nazis, the first treaty Hitler signed after coming to power was a non-aggression pact with Poland in January 1934. In August 1939, the Soviet Union also signed treaties with Nazi Germany, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and secretly divided the countries that lay between them. One week later, in September 1939, they invaded Poland according to the terms of the treaty signed earlier that year. Mr Putin has merged diplomatic outreach to a threatening neighbour with collaboration.
Mr Putin's "divide and conquer" tactic was prevalent. The interview was laden with jabs and assigned blame against the USA, Ukraine, and the West, loaded with propaganda to create doubt-an attempt to undermine the USA's, the West's and its supporters' faith in democracy. Furthermore, the interview's timing was critical for Ukraine as, on Wednesday, a multi-billion USA aid package that was critical for Kyiv was blocked. This interview was a Kremlin public relations stunt. Mr Putin steamrolled Carlson with finesse and remained unchallenged during the whole interview.

I imagine how confusing the history of these lands is for other people... Let me bring some more confusion!
The roots of nowadays Russia are in the Principality of Moscow, that was founded later then the original " Rus' " principalities (Novgorod, Kyiv, Polack, etc.). It was subjugated by the Golden Horde and inherited its power structure - the leader and his subjects. Original " Rus' " principalities had some form of a medieval democracy and weren't conquered or subjugated by the Golden Horde. Then the Principality of Moscow destroyed Novgorod and Tver principalities with their semblance of a democratic rule and incorporated them. As Novgorod was originally one of the " Rus' " principalities and an older entity, Moscow stole the name for themselves for prestige and further stupid claims that Putin adjussi is spouting now.
Meanwhile former " Rus' " principalities retained their medieval democracies and minded their own business fighting the Teutonic Order and the Tatars and forming unions with their western neighbors. They were called Ruthenians (with lots of other identities they developed over time which lead to creation of nation states of Ukraine and Belarus). While the people of Moscow were called Moscovites. Until they decided that they were russians
So, Russia - Moscovites, authoritarian rule from the Golden Horde
Ukraine, Belarus - Ruthenians, "democratic" medieval rule from the older " Rus' " principalities

He can be punchy and short but its apparent he thinks people do not know the Russian history. And in America thats true. I think the other thing he is certain of Is that people do not know the history of the Ukrainian conflict. A good documentary to watch educationally is : Roses Have Thorns.

I'd like to mention that it's my opinion that since invading Ukraine, Russia's main battle strategy is to fortify their position in the eastern region while AFU and NATO-backed forces attack Russian defenses. Instead of playing an offensive war, it appears one of Russia's main strategies is to deplete Ukrainian forces while holding their defensive ground. Tucker: "Why you didn't take it once you became the president of Russia?"
Putin: "I had never considered even thought about the opportunity where some scenario could have been existed as the country called Ukraine where 95% of the population fought against Nazism together with 14 other USSR republics and had maybe biggest count of Soviet Ukrainian Jews those were sent to Nazi Germany camps of death and the country where the most of population speak Russian like the first language except 10-15 % of the western regions originally Polish could have been declared Nazi Germany Waffen SS murders like Bandera or Shukhevich "national heroes" who were fought for "freedom" in Ukraine and the whole Europe under "liberators" called the 3rd Reich! Mr.Tucker I could not have imagened either the scenario where such country would be sponsored and supplied by the special services of the country which were filmed such movies like "Apt Pupil" or "Saving Private Ryan" or "Schindler's List" and the country which soldiers gave warm hugs to our USSR soldiers on Elbe river in Germany once Eastern and Western allies front had been connected because of it's just another proxy-war. Mr.Tucker have you had any feeling when you aren't sure are you still sleeping seeing terribale nightmare or is it in real?"
I would like to add that once Soviet Union was collapsed ex-USSR republics got huge impact of the western culture including Hollywood movies, music, food, clothes. So the generation of those years went to school and begun to learn English in an elementary school watching Beverly Hills 90210, Sliders TV series, eating hamburgers and reading the guide of baseball rules. Nowadays many of those children have need to protect brotherhood country against same countries those were sent so much stuff to their childhood...
Ludmila Pavluchenko, real national Ukrainian hero was invited to the white house in Washington right before Allies opened the second front in France with a speech so she said there: "I'm 25 years old and I have killed 309 nazis don't you think gentlemen that you're too long hidding for my back?" quite soon the second front was opened in France.
"Nowadays Canadian parliament applaud to a nazi. Mr.Carlson can we say that we completely solved that problem?" said Putin
thanks for you content, great job and analysis!
