Hell yeah, like a third-person game not OTS view, but kinda like ninja gaiden having its 4 elemental stages overhauled with new designs, puzzles, traps, enemies, etc.
There were 2 major issues about this game. 1) turn button during the fights, 2) a stunnin' difficulty of the game with a large amount of traps. I'm thinkin' that most of the people stopped playin' during level 2. I know i was, but that didn't stop me from eventually learn how to jump on the swinging platforms properly. In the end i was able to beat this game on very hard without using cheat codes. I will forever be thankful to John Tobias and his crew for making this game. It made Bi-Han my favorite character.
I absolutely loved the game. I'm surprised it didn't do better. I agree that it is due for a remake or, at the very least, another game like this or Shaolin Monks. Netherrealms make it happen, please!
Narrator: So what was your thought process behind this game? Ed Boon: oh, I just wanted to make a game that was hard AF for no reason with a high probability the player will break it from frustration. Narrator: Spot on mate
first game i ever beat on my own. it took me the whole summer after 3rd grade to get through and figure all the traps and paths out but it was pretty rewarding. to this day i enjoy sitting thru tryna beat the campaign as quick as possible.. always wanted to see some sort of rom hack to this as far as different levels i think that would be awesome.
This game deserves a prize. Mortal Kombat games are still the best. All around awesome and amazing. Ed Boon and John Tobias have created a Truly amazing franchise and I'm very sure we'll see another Mortal Kombat game soon. Need I say more.... MORTAL KOMBAT!!
TuneTamasha they made this one & special forces & Shaolin monks I think that they should come back to doing at least a few more of these type of games with today's Technology & I know that john tobies sry if I got the last name wrong isn't with ed boom any more but I still think that they can pull it off without him
This game was great. I still wont sell it. I remember having to be so careful and precise. Had to learn to use the turn button effeciently. He said (whoever it was in the clip) that the controls were just the same as the others MKs But to split hairs there was the turn button that was added. But hey if you didnt use it properly you were screwed.hmm not such a hair splitting fact after all. Yeah I definetly remember it being merciless at times. Wind stag,e frustrating yet rewarding.
I absolutely love to see these kinds of documentaries, I get really inspired by seeing how the special effects are implemented and what particular techiques are used for them :-) Thanks!
@ultrawwefan Oddly enough... they were going to, sorta. A little "Mythologies" and a little "Shaolin Monks". It was going to be called "Mortal Kombat: Fire and Ice". It was going to be about the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. And feature a storyline after MK4, where they team up, after Scorpion realizes that Quan Chi is actually responsible for the destruction of the Shinrai Ryu and the original Sub-Zero (Noob Saibot) was essentially framed.
Yeah dude, I very distinctly remember renting this on vhs too. I thought it was so goddamn awesome, but they took off the shelves after a short time so I guess it was just a limited promo release
if i remember correctly in Saibot's ending on Armageddon they said something about him fusing with the younger Sub-Zero, they should show what that looks like in MK9
I loved this game and the Jax spin off game even though everybody hates it. I wish they made more story games like those for us in the future. Do you guys remember MK Shaolin Monks, the Liu Kang and Kung Lao game, that was the shit. I know its really corny but I wish we still had FMV games in 2019 but it will never happen. There was a sequel to MK Shaolin Monks that was planned about Sub-Zero and Scorpion that got cancelled. The sequel was going to be called MK Fire and Ice, man that would have been really cool to see.
@numbah82 Noob = Boon backwards. It's just as much Ed's as it is John's. But Noob will still be in the games. BTW, John Tobias came back to work on MK vs DCU.
This game really got a bad rap, seems like most people were bothered by the turn-around button, but that didn't bother me. This game was a unique way to take traditional MK gameplay and use it in a platform-style action game, and I feel they did it successfully. I don't care what the majority says, I know I liked this game very much, and I still play it from time to time.
@numbah82 yeah, i read that somewhere. I still like to think he had a hand in the design, considering the drawings in the comic and the design in the game, are the first ones to look a lot like his old school designs since MK4
@TheSonicGod Of course it would.John Tobias is the father of the MK storyline and characters. When he left, everything went wrong and lame. Vogel is maybe a good game designer but he definately can not replace Tobias's work in MK storyline and characters.
@aznperson84 You couldn't ask them to do that because back then, Midway was very discreet about their gaming development. It would be like saying: HAY GAIZ, WANNA SEE THE NEW GAME WE'RE WORKING ON THAT'S NOT EVEN IN THE TESTING STAGES OF YET?
@aznperson84 Actually no, they added on the half-American part due to the fact that they could not stay consistent with an Asian playing the unmasked ninja characters since, well, they didn't know any Asian bodybuilders they could hire plus John Turk had done a much better job of portraying the ninja characters than Daniel Pesina. You probably hadn't known this but, most of the cast, including the ninja characters, were mainly composed of athletes/bodybuilders
Maybe this way MK should evolve in a future... Where each or some of faction fighters go through the levels in full 3d like in DarkSouls 2 or Absolver something between MK4 and MK Mythologies, but with good graphics
I never actually owned this game eventho i had a PSX... hy cousins had it for N64 and it was nothing but frustration to me... Maybe if i had it myself i couldnve managed to beat it :)
@theshredder39 You do realize that pretty much ALL the endings on Armageddon were non-canon right? MK9 is going back to the timeline of the first 3 games, but with added twists.
Vicky Cole I believe they would have done the most of the characters from the first Mortal Kombat game. Sucks because it was a cool idea and concept for a game
This game had so much potential.... shame the gameplay came out so shitty. If they focused as much on controls as they did the graphics they wouldn't have had that problem.
Ikr. and 7 yrs later, there was Shaolin Monks. We'rent there rumors that "Scorpion" was supposed to get his own version similar to Sub-Zero's Mythologies?
3. Q) Where is the Universal Translator located? A) The Universal Translator is an item pictured and described in the instruction manuals, but not in the actual game. The option to "Drop" items (also in the instruction manuals) is absent as well. No sources are known that explain why this is.
@orinanime Unfortunately him making the comic books still has no affect on the actual game per say. By the time he makes the comic books , character models have already been designed and then he just draws what he sees. Although i do understand why you would think that
i have put together in my head, not sure at this time if this is writen down on the internet anywhere but i'm pretty sure that noob saibot's name was made from ed boon's last name and john tobias' last name,so that would be boon tobias so just turn around boon and you get noob and turn around tobias and you get saibot. noob saibot please don't call me a dumb ass if everybody already knows.
If youre a fan of Mk, you know this was the real thing. The combat, music, secrets and atmosphere was all there... Klassic! You dont like this game? you have no skill, or you just say whatever you have read others say (SHEEP behavier)
A game with such potential deserves a remake.
Hell yeah, like a third-person game not OTS view, but kinda like ninja gaiden having its 4 elemental stages overhauled with new designs, puzzles, traps, enemies, etc.
Its likely it can get a remake
This game was awesome. I wish Tobias can come back and join nrs.
There were 2 major issues about this game. 1) turn button during the fights, 2) a stunnin' difficulty of the game with a large amount of traps. IDK why everyone hated this game, I thought it was pretty damn awesome.
It was my first game ever on ps1 and it was great!!!
John Tobias, what a genius
I wish John Tobias was still apart the creative group. He would have checked Kevin Tach.
"Do not FAIL me!" haha
"We, you and I" (background laugh).
I absolutely loved the game. I'm surprised it didn't do better. I agree that it is due for a remake or, at the very least, another game like this or Shaolin Monks. Netherrealms make it happen, please!
Im glad they decided to go with a Chinese assasin/thief and not the more common japanese ninja

When it came to the creative direction (story, characters, character designs and backstory) John tobias was the best
One of my favorite games
subzero mythologies was a real bad ass game and i used to own it still wish i did
This game deserves a prize. Mortal Kombat games are still the best. All around awesome and amazing. Ed Boon and John Tobias have created a Truly amazing franchise and I'm very sure we'll see another Mortal Kombat game soon.
Need I say more.... MORTAL KOMBAT!!
They should MAKE MORE ADVENTURE FIGHTING GAME mk
00:01 that's an AMAZING company logo, that holds up _superbly_ today.
Very underrated
Shame they didn't make more of these.
They did it's called Mortal Kombat Special Forces and it was terrible so they stopped doing anymore.
+Marcus McDonald Actually you are wrong kinda..... they made Shaolin Monks
TuneTamasha they made this one & special forces & Shaolin monks I think that they should come back to doing at least a few more of these type of games with today's Technology & I know that john tobies sry if I got the last name wrong isn't with ed boom any more but I still think that they can pull it off without him
I mean boon
@@GhostFan-ev4di Shaolin Monks was sick

That's why they came up in MKD as classic Sub-Zero being Noob Saibot.
Great game. One of the best from MK universe. There are perfect all.
Yeah dude, I very distinctly remember renting this on vhs too. I thought it was so goddamn awesome, but they took off the shelves after a short time so I guess it was just a limited promo release
loved this game.

Its from a MKM promo / press tape...practly impossible to find these days.
MK Mythologies : Johnny Cage would gas
Lol those swinging platforms! What a pain
Thank you. That was very helpful :)
i have a question... what is the new code for the motion caption studio? :3
One of my favourite games ever.
Ahhaha, i remember that. I still got the cassette tape of those songs.
cool man the only vid i could find for mkm:sz was the outtake video! i love this shit! ^-^
@numbah82
Noob = Boon backwards. It's just as much Ed's as it is John's.
But Noob will still be in the games.

The swinging platforms in the wind level pissed me off, it was the ultimate troll in the game
Wow, I still remember when I got this VHS out of a bargain bin at Blockbuster. 99 cents used. :-)
Man, those actores are all on steroids lol Look at Raiden, damnn
I remember renting this from blockbuster for free
This was a press only issue tape, the only MK tape that has been for rent at Blockbuster was "Into Outworld the making of MK3".
Like it
The chinese music is great ...
Great video ,Thnx
Completely agree with you.
This game really got a bad rap, seems like most people were bothered by the turn-around button, but that didn't bother me. That was cool
Luke do you have a behind the scenes from Mortal Kombat II? Or something about MK II?
where do you get the universal translator
@numbah82
yeah, i read that somewhere.

Vogel is maybe a good game designer but he definately can not replace Tobias's work in MK storyline and characters.
lol there was never an "MKM: Liu Kang" planned...
I just came here to say it never happened. But, we have Shaolin Monks, that's something!
@BIGBOSS1983100 He also played Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
@TotalMK is that mega drive controller at 06:10
This game rocks
this game was the best... i dont understand anyone that says it was bad in anyway, or just okay... this game was fuckin badass...
Same here bro!
3:15 Jataaka in first floor , outside...
@aznperson84 You couldn't ask them to do that because back then, Midway was very discreet about their gaming development. It would be like saying: HAY GAIZ, WANNA SEE THE NEW GAME WE'RE WORKING ON THAT'S NOT EVEN IN THE TESTING STAGES OF YET?
very true
no, thats not why.. that actually saved them some money, and it was a good game
they announced they were in trouble before that game released
@aznperson84 Actually no, they added on the half-American part due to the fact that they could not stay consistent with an Asian playing the unmasked ninja characters since, well, they didn't know any Asian bodybuilders they could hire plus John Turk had done a much better job of portraying the ninja characters than Daniel Pesina.

why aren't the Asian characters never played by Asian actors?
Low budget not for good looking and buff asian actors I suppose.
@TotalMK u ain't lyin bout dat stage...
I never actually owned this game eventho i had a PSX... hy cousins had it for N64 and it was nothing but frustration to me... Maybe if i had it myself i couldnve managed to beat it :)
i know this used to be me and my brothers favorite game!
OHHHHH CHINESE NINJA WARRIORR.... WIth your HEART SOOOO COLD!!!! SUB ZEROOOOOOOOOOO OHHHHH Your Life Is a Mystery.... And you wear a MASK!!! LOL
I hate to break it to you,but I was able to rent this at my blockbuster for free before the game came out.
It wasn't? Aw man. Guess I got my facts wrong. I could've sworn I'd heard that quite a bit ago.
Is that a wavenet machine I just saw?
whats the differents between the PSX and the PS1?
I wonder if that would explain the character duo "Noob-Smoke."
i played it in ps1 its hard and cool game ;-)
@carcassgrindcorpsesc In the original timeline, it was said that he and his brother are Chinese Americans.
That was for the making of MK3, this wasn't for rent at blockbuster.
Kinda wished Tobias stayed with midway the storyline would've been a lot different.
@theshredder39
You do realize that pretty much ALL the endings on Armageddon were non-canon right?
MK9 is going back to the timeline of the first 3 games, but with added twists.
I heard the mortal kombat mythologies series was going to make a komeback for other characters 2022
@TotalMK Is the person that plays Quan Chi also Kano Im not sure.
I was frozen today !
If this game did well. I wonder how many more they would have made
Vicky Cole I believe they would have done the most of the characters from the first Mortal Kombat game. Sucks because it was a cool idea and concept for a game
This game is so fuckin underated....
@ultrawwefan I'd like a MKM: Scorpion, but done in the style of MK: Shaolin Monks.
I saw on another video a comment talking about Noob Saibot. Noob Saibot = Tobias Boon. Now I know the reason for Noob's name.
You can always download it somewhere :)
Fucking hard to play this damn game but love it lol

By the time he makes the comic books , character models have already been designed and then he just draws what he sees.
Although i do understand why you would think that
AlienFirefox is probably right. Sadly, it probably won't happen. MKM: Liu Kang was planned and later scrapped.
Wonder how they felt about having Sub-Zero fight a fire-breathing dinosaur at the Bridge of Immortality?
i have put together in my head, not sure at this time if this is writen down on the internet anywhere but i'm pretty sure that noob saibot's name was made from ed boon's last name and john tobias' last name,so that would be boon tobias so just turn around boon and you get noob and turn around tobias and you get saibot.

Truth. Those who hate this game, just pussies who like special moves with energy and all shit like MKX.
i already played batman forever...nothing to do with been a fan
mythology sucks more then conquest Armageddon
Maarten van Dijk you are lost pal
without john tobias mortal kombat started getting worse
i have a n64 with that game, and that version don`t have the movies ):
@orinanime I know what it means
John only came back to work on the MK vs DC comic books he didnt do any work on the actual game
