What I think would be great, comic relief is easier someone that has very strong active Magic but they're over depended on it so when it gets negated the 40 years old rolling on the floor crying for their mom

I think a good way to show a character skill and composure is if you have an active magic system somehow their magic gets negated and they're able to remain calm and they just pull out their gun

Great video Marie! I appreciate you tie the significance of immediate vs non-immediate magic systems to your themes!

I rather like the Jack Vance system in The Dying Earth series, where the wizard has to pick the spells he needs (often with very evocative names) before he embarks on a project. And this was the system of magic that the 2nd edition D&D built on - you had to pick which spells you would memorize beforehand, and also have the correct components for various spells. I rather like this system even in novels. A bit of a mix of immediate and preplanned. And even the immediacy of the spell differs depending on the spell, and also there are varying degrees of vocal, somatic and material components.

I rather like that system too. Requires some planning and quite a bit of adaptability

One form of hybridization that I’ve only seen a handful of times (at least discounting magic items) is using the ritualistic magic to gain immediate magic. As in, you have to do a lengthy ritual first, but then you pretty much always have access to that spell on the fly.
Another idea for a juxtaposition between immediate and ritual magic is permanence. Immediate magic can be weaker and impermanent (e.g. you make ice, but it ceases to exist after a minute), while ritualistic magic is stronger and has long lasting effects (e.g. the ice you made continues to exist, and will either melt into water or remain cold for eternity depending on the spell).

Also, yay for Old Kingdom. It’s Necromancy is one of my favorite magic systems, just because of the way the bells and levels of death work, and the way they interplay with the Charter and retrocognition.

I love that magic system, it’s so intricate and works so well. Also the bells are amazing

I have to say I vastly prefer soft magic. Say words, magic happens is thematically and narratively more fulfilling to me.

I like harder systems, but not video game hard. I also don’t mind soft systems, as long as they don’t go deus ex on me. For me, as long as the magic fits the theme, I’m good with it.
