My friend lives in Pakistan. In every way, her community harms her. From her ISIS loving dad, to the doctors that won't give her a life saving hysterectomy, to the court that just ruled in her dad's favour in his insane accusations that her uncle is "blasphemous", to the hirachy system in the family that means even if she speaks from truth and peace they are all simply allowed to dismiss her, lecture and scold her if they so wish.
They tell her she can't leave her room without being completely covered in case the house help rape her. They tell her jinns will get her if she so much as goes on the balcony, she needs to have her hair tied at all times because jinn want to take her hair so even in the bed she is not safe. They tell her that her illnesses are a curse from Allah and that she is a curse on the family. She can not have any refuge in any shelter there. There are none that will take her and none that aren't a living hell where families abandon unloved female relatives. Everyone constantly lies, like constantly. Everyone, not just her family, constantly judges everything, creating misery, fear, and restriction. What was acceptable one day is cause for attack the next. She can't just get a taxi to the hospital because of the risk of rape/theft/trafficking. When we tried to get her out of there we were told the only way to get the police to cooperate with us rather than just being swayed by the dad was to bribe them, this was a lawyers advice.
They all say they prey for her, her mum leaves her without food and medication for hours sometimes near enough a whole day, she has been 4 and a half stone. They say they prey for her but they don't actually give her love. When they do take her to the hospital her brothers tell her she should make herself prettier, and the parents tell her she should brush her hair, cover herself etc, no care that she is fighting for her life and barely conscious. Its not just her family it's the whole system.
My other friend in the UK married a Muslim man and he's also awful, rude to her mum and nan because he is higher up than them, his whole family system which is traditional is overbearing too.
The religion was perpetuated by a war mongerer and pedophile. That's factual but there are probably millions that would want me dead for saying it.
I'm critical of the west too and my own culture and I'm critical of Christianity and other religions. I also see some beauty and enlightenment in Islam too but like Christianity, it is often diluted or twisted. I am also slightly more on the free Palestine side of things, just saying that for balance because I know some will just pretend I'm just racist and biased purely against Muslims.
It's not just "the media" that makes people disagree with or even dislike Islam.
In Islam, you can't reject a man's proposal of marriage to your 9 year old daughter on the basis that she is too young, and he can consumate the marriage against her will. It's literally unislamic to try to stop him. You can not accept the validity of other people's faiths, and you can not accept homosexuals. Muslim countries, on the whole, are among the least happy and yes, that's in part because of outside forces, but Islam seems to create plenty of misery in its people too.

Why is it bad if you don't want to date a member of a religious group, ethnic group etc (it's called a preference) or don't want your child to date one? Muslim culture is usually very different from American culture, so why is it bad to avoid getting married or date one?

People of different religions usually don't because that is a fundamental division that causes major problems for a relationship. Here's a great example, most Jews that immigrated to America assimilated very well! They still have their synagogues and their special cultural and religious practices, but they are also very aligned with American values and the American way of life. And they are not bothered or offended when a Christian doesn't want to marry them. See??
