- The Valley of the Kings also known as the Valley of the Gates of the Kings is a valley in Egypt where, for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, rock-cut tombs were excavated for the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom.
The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The wadi consists of two valleys, East Valley (where the majority of the royal tombs are situated) and West Valley.
With the 2005 discovery of a new chamber and the 2008 discovery of two further tomb entrances, the valley is known to contain 64 tombs and chambers. It was the principal burial place of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, as well as a number of privileged nobles. The royal tombs are decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give clues as to the beliefs and funerary practices of the period. Almost all of the tombs seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an idea of the opulence and power of the pharaohs.

Thanks for the video, it was fascinating to watch. The tomb of Rameses IV looks impressive with magnificent colours, which is curious given that he reigned at the beginning of Egypt’s decadence. I'll be sure to visit when I go to the KV. PS: Your little boy is lovely.

I had been there in 2010. Merneptah sarcophagus is very amazing. By the way Merneptah, Seti 1, Rammeses are still greatest pharaohs in history.
I also visited Hatsepsut temple. I still remember the steps on the temple made me so tired 🤣

Most interesting to see the changes that have been implemented since we visited in 1987, if a little disappointing to notice the deterioration in some areas. Do you have video of other areas of the vast necropolis?
eg The Valley of the Queens, Tombs of the Nobles, Deir el Bahri and the Village of the Workmen. The tomb of Sennedjem there was the most beautiful of all the ones we visited.
Hello, sorry I missed your comment. No we haven't been to Valley of the Queens or the other places. It was our second trip to Egypt and planning more in the future to digest the history bit by bit, next trip will be mainly around Aswan 🙌
Thanks for this. I was sorry to see that the mummified remains of King Tut are on display. I visited this tomb in 1956, 1983, and 1991 and on all three occasions the gold inner coffin was on display. One of the best tombs to visit is Seti I, but at 1,000 EGP (about £45 June 2021) a ticket, I can understand not many choose to!

@@Elonas I believe the best preserved tomb of all is Nefertari's in the Valley of the Queens. I saw it back in 1983, but after that it was closed for restoration. Now open again at a hefty price. I remember my guide trying to persuade me that the diaphanous skirts you see in some of the frescoes were nylon! Be sure to upload your second visit please. I really like these 4K tours. Much appreciated.

I'm going to sharm el sheikh next month and have wanted to see this since I was a little girl im now 57 but alas I have copd so think it would be to much walking for me or do you think I would be ok
Hi Wendy, if you talk specifically about Valley of The Kings then no, its not too bad as all the tombs are tightly packed, so not too much walking 😉 There's more walking in Karnak temples or even Luxor Temple. I would say it's definitely worth staying 2 days to see most of what Luxor has to offer. But depends how long you are planning to stay in Sharm El Sheikh as Luxor is quite far away 😬

@@wendyrowlands3929 no worries ☺️👍 Be careful in Sharm El Sheikh, always check the menu before ordering in restaurant and if you use taxi they must start the meter once you get in, otherwise they will charge you 200 LE (Egyptian pounds) for any small trip 😅 apart of that you should have great time there!

All i can think watching this is that I'm 52 years old and have wanted to visit egypt my whole life since i was about 11 years old. I have hundreds of books, seen hundreds of videos, know the history, pharoahs, can read heiroglyphs somewhat, but I've never been lucky enough to afford to go there. But here's this little kid in the red shirt...and because his parents have money.. He's there. And cannot possibly grasp one millionth of what i would grasp. But he's there and I'm not. It's maddening. This would be the biggest moment of my entire life and for this kid...it seems like a merry go round at a neighborhood park. A video game would entertain him more. He seems Completely unaffected. I'd be in total awe. It's unbelievably sad and demoralizing.
