      I quite frankly couldn't care less about the building (especially since I find space outpost themed architecture to be rather boring). Only way I might spend time doing it much is if someone mods them to be a lot more cool looking even if it costs any semblance of logic
      That being said I'm extremely excited for the crafting as it's something I thoroughly enjoyed in fallout 4 (as long as it has actually good UI)

      Agreed. I'm an int/cha buiild in FO4, and I love it... I make the best everything. Only thing I miss is multiplayer so I can be the quartermaster while someone else runs as frontliner... Hopefully, Starfield either has this out of the box or creation club adds enough financial incentive to see it added in. The dialogue option for companions being able to answer would hopefully simplify development if its the latter, anyway...

      @@Verchiel_ Agreed. Building in FO4 without mods was passable... But with mods it became amazing. Starfield may be the same. I expect many planets won't work for earth architecture (air and temp issues, poisonous gases, etc...), but just look up sci-fi architecture and you'll see some amazing build concepts that hopefully become possible.

    The base building, resource gathering and crafting is a huge part of my anticipation for this game. If it's like FO4, it will have a good mixture of both BB and combat.

      @EQOAnostalgia Рік тому +1

      I never understood the hate for FO4... it fixed the shite combat, had solid building mechanics that mods make 24235235x better. Junk matters, you have a use for a lot of things which = more things to do and more reasons to scour every corner of buildings etc.
      I mean sure the story is kinda buttcheeks, but in 8 years i'm STILL modding that f'ing game and it still gives me new experiences that blow my mind. FO3 and NV were dope but... they didn't have HALF of what makes 4 so addicting to me.
      I guess it all comes down to "do you like to build or not?"

    THIS is my jam in Bethesda Games...
    Well, games in general I suppose; BASE Building!
    Wow, I am SO excited for this aspect. Had HELLA crazy bases in FO4 and my OG base from launch day of FO76 is still in regular use, being updated all the time, but never taken apart and redone, so it has a really nice lived in feel with, IMO, really organic clutter placement.
    Feels well, lived in, shelters and all.
    The fact we get, what appears to be NMS type base and employee/companion, whatever, activity, but apparently MUCH more improved (I PRAY), than NMS's version, is the BIG thing sending me to the Moon, so to speak, in anticipation for this part of it all.

    I'm hoping for more vertical elements to base building. I would hope (and expect) the base building in Starfield to be 'at least' as sophisticated as what we got in Fallout 4, ideally more so given they've had over a decade to learn from experience (and modders) how to do it properly. Add to that the more practical element of research, resource extraction, production and hopefully trade, so we have a reason to build such outposts, and we have vastly more potential than we ever had with even heavily modded Fallout 4.

      They make the game they want, and have mods so a minority of us can change to how we want. Whine like a baby all you like - THIS is how it should be done. If you look at a mod and whine about how "why is this no default" maybe think you are not most people who buy the game who don't really care about what we care about.
      Og course, then you cannot be negative and feel superior, so I guess that outlook is out of the question.

    Great breakdown. In Fallout 4 I enjoyed the settlement building - not for the actual mechanics of building (it was a massive grind to gather resources). But it made roleplaying sense to me. In a world destroyed by nuclear war it felt good to try and bring people together and rebuild lives and community. So for me to enjoy base building in Starfield I need a roleplaying reason to do it. If it is just to get a new space suit or a new weapon or just to get money then it's going to feel like a chore. I hope base building is tied into meaningful side quests or faction quests.

    This looks like what should have been in Fallout 4 -- optional creation of settlements as opposed to required. I can imagine making a place just for you (and a small starter crew?) to being with, then expanding it when and if you want to. Make you have your home, for those opting to not start with that starter home trait. We can literally build us a place where we really belong in this universe they are making. Love it.
    Also, well spotted of the character there in the beginning. When the image zoomed out again I struggled briefly to see it, then realised why I had completely missed it before -- it is quite minute a figure there.
    As for the tone, I like it. But in the end, what works for you (and the mythical algorithm).

    The biggest problem with base building in fo4 was that they replaced what would have been existing settlements with empty patches for the player to build on. But with starfield having over 1000 planets we shouldn't run into that problem so I'm super down for this

  • @austinjeral1201

    Something I noticed was that it seems like the number of structures are limited. At 6:53 you can see that the buildings have things like 1/3 or 2/2 next to them. That seems to indicate that we are only allowed to place a certain number of those individual pieces. The numbers seem to line up with the visuals for the most part too. So, we would only be able to place say three industrial hallways. Can't wait to get more information on this aspect. Would also love to know if there are ways, we can increase the number of pieces we can place down.

      Maybe that's how they are keeping a lid on base size, as opposed to the completely weird "magic size bar" in FO4? Those numbers look very low, though, and it would be weird to have to build different variants of things to max out the base - i.e. if there's a Square Hydroponic and a Round Hydroponic I don't want to be forced to build 2 of each rather than have a consistent visual style. It could be part of a early build, though - just designed to keep save file size under control. Maybe?

    • @austinjeral1201
      @austinjeral1201 Рік тому

      @@geofflangdale8127 Definitely makes sense. I was thinking the same thing about the science building. Why would we need multiple of a building designed to craft items? Honestly what I really am hoping for is something a bit nicer to decorate than FO4. The settlements were nice, but having to decorate them was a massive pain. I kind of hope they took a bit of inspiration from the Sims Settlement mod and will have different rooms decorate themselves and the player can add on if they want.

      @kyriosmalaka2312 Рік тому

      Starfield's outpost system seems to work like the C.A.M.P. system in Fallout 76. You have an overall build budget and every item you place counts against it. But you also sometimes have a build limit for specific things or groups of things. Floors and walls have no specific limiter, so you can build as many as you want so long as you have budget. Turrets and lighting have a group limiter. You can put down any type of lighting up to 50 for the group and any combination of turrets up to 10 for the group. You can't exceed that number even if you have budget available. And sometimes you have an item specific limiter like one firewood pile or one Whac-A-Commie arcade machine. That's how it works.

    • @kyriosmalaka2312
      @kyriosmalaka2312 Рік тому

      I forgot the most likely thing those numbers represent. Those are the number of variants available for a given object. This would include skins you buy from the cash shop or unlock through gameplay. Any limiters would appear in the panel where the build requirements and operating costs are listed and not in that tab on the right.

    I hope they wouldn't cut out a possibility of making structures by placing each part of construction, like walls, floors, etc. by your own only for the benefit of type of presets shown. Probably they wouldn't, but i am still not sure. I am a big fan of building in last Bethesda games, but i wasn't a big fan of using pre-made structures in Fallout 4, as an example. I prefer to nitpicking everything personally.
    Also i am pretty interested to see a different type of buildings, such as civilian houses, not in a science, but casual style, maybe made of a plain materials. I am sure there is must to be something like that, but i'm interested, how this was handled. I mean, you certainly couldn't place a cheap wood/brick living house on a planet without the atmosphere, right? There is a special equipped living quarter must to be placed here, but what about the Earth-type planets? Could we place something plain on them then? Probably, this is a question for a conference to answer on, or for whatever expanding info they will release.
    Speaking about your new approach for the video. I would say, that there is some noticeable difference in it, but i can't say would i prefer this more or less. It's just... slightly different experience, and i'm okay with it though.

    I'm not sure which style I prefer. You laid out the details we know thoroughly, which was much appreciated. The base-building seems like a fairly overlooked aspect of Starfield, so I'm glad you covered it.
    On the one hand the outpost system could be designed in such a way as to feel in the way of the rest of the game. But, if Bethesda incorporates it in such a way as to keep it easy to build a small outpost for refueling or completing a quest mission, yet give us the depth to build larger, more complex outposts that serve more purpose than just to build. Here's what I'd like to see: the ability to mine or farm resources and manufacture goods with some level of automation through a hired workforce, droids, or other machines. Then, along with that chain of systems, I want to see an economy of sorts where each settlement or city you ship your goods to will only purchase a set amount of various resources each week dependant on the population, wealth, and industry of said settlement. They could even add a function where the price of a certain good would drop if you sold it at a local settlement the maximum amount multiple weeks in a row.
    There are other, less likely features for a trade system I'd love to see such as trade permits required for United Colonies settlements (to reflect the higher control and safety of said faction), competitive systems against other trader ships, faction trading bonuses, etc. But this is a rabbit trail...
    Back to the base-building topic. A few things I'd like to see are:
    Industrial outpost capabilities. I'd like to see mining, boring/pumping (fuel), logging, farming, and manufacturing of goods from said resources, but these things need some automation.
    Homesteading outpost capabilities. I'd love to see less industrialized outpost buildings if you're building on a planet with an atmosphere. And maybe I enjoy ARK too much, but I'd like to see some ability to tame/domesticate a few types of animals.
    Then I'd love to see these incorporated into playing the game and stories. Maybe a settlement has encountered a sickness brought on by the mining done in the local area. To help them you could secure a weekly shipment of the needed medication from Akila City, or you can setup your own manufacturing of the medication and setup a weekly shipment yourself. Or how about a new settler is trying to start a new life in a small settlement by setting up a ranch and needs 30 head of cattle to start things off. You can arrange the shipment from wherever, or sell from your own herd a cattle.
    Yes, I know, these are mostly wishful thinkings, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to share some dreams. 😅

    I am afraid that outpost building will be tedious and cost more in micro managing. Although it does add alot of depth to the game so I think it is necessary. By the looks we will have the option to customize and decorate the insides of our outposts.
    Does anyone have an idea of the storage space requirement for Starfield? Like 1TB?

    I have been well into the settlement building in FO4 so I am very excited about Starfield's more, useful, base building system. I just hope that we will have a way of making those bases look radically different from each others. I like telling stories through my builds, if all my bases end up having the same things just placed differently that's going to be difficult. I must say though, bethesda's base layout in that video looks awful, barely any space between the wall and the entrance, it doesn't feel welcoming ^_^

    Played a lot of games in my life. Never felt like I lived in a game more than Stardew Valley and the NPC interactions are incredibly basic. It's having a home. Cyberpunk lacks that feeling. The witcher 3 lacks that feeling. You're just running around all day. Hopefully my settlement is somewhere I want to go. A place to store my loot from across the galaxy. The robot being able to pronounce my name is huge as well

    The outpost system in Starfield is an updated version of the Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. system with its circular build area carved out around a centrally placed object that you can plant just about anywhere. There's also a free-cam build mode in 76. That thing that looks like an oil pump @7:46 is the standard resource extractor you place over a resource node in 76. Even a wood node and a junk node get this oil pump looking thing.

    It's funny hearing Hydroponics described like a foreign concept. Hydroponics was big in popculter in the late 1990's. Star Trek Voyager had a "Hydroponics bay" heavily featured in the early seasons, in which you could see how the plant roots were suspended loose over nutriant ritch water. they also use to sell home "Hydroponics" kits at grocery stores for growing small easy plants like verious sprouts. most of them were stacks of trays in a sealed container that recycled the water like a terrarium. it was a kind of a gimik to pretend you were going to eat healthy rather than a practical device, like having a sea monkey aquarium compaired to an actual fish tank. I'd guess that's why the fad died out. I think macy's department store sill sold an open air version of one a frew years ago that included an LED grow light on a computerized timer.

  • @PacalB

    This looks interesting, and a little simplistic, but I get the feeling that as your building research levels increase, there will be more modules available. It looks intriguing that there is a military hab, I suppose depending on the planet, the base might come under attack periodically, whether from fauna as you suggest, pirates, or competitors. It is essential that the bases you create on these planets seem alive, supported, and lived in. The NPCs at these outposts should feel as if they are your characters from the old X-COM games, where they grow and you become attached to them. If NPCs just bumble about without really doing anything, like in NMS, you'll simply end up making outposts and leaving them behind.
    As for the format of this video, it is cool you've done it like this. I get the feeling, whatever way you choose to do your videos they will be clear, concise and informative. Great work.

    Outpost (30) might be an inventory system letting you know how many you have available. It looks a lot like that in FO4, but this is an educated guess at best, so speculation. Still, with over a thousand planets, I better get more than 30 outpost. I want to fill those planets up.

    Honestly I enjoy both scripted and conversational about equally although for different reasons. Scripted you are much less likely to forget some details and the structure helps for understanding complex things or things where a certain procedure is involved and conversational is often better for expressing opinions and experiences. I suppose you could do a bit of both. I enjoy your videos very much and want to watch more especially as the game is released and develops.
