    I like the "functional ugly" style of the ships we've seen so far. They look convincingly authentic, but still have enough small flourishes to let you build something with some charm to it.

      Same. The fact that you can look at a random part of the ship and can reasonably guess a purpose from it is what makes this “function over form” aesthetic one of my favorite in the sci-fi genre.

      That'll be pretty easy, you'll just have to find a free model, or buy one, or make one yourself and port it to the game with the help of three softwares mostly. Nifskope, xedit, and blender or something.

    I love base-building games where you can customize the look of the base rather than just have generic looking bases premade, and the ability to completely restructure the ship itself is gold for me

    Honestly cannot wait for those step out moments.
    Really going to go slow with this one, I really hope it takes a long time to get resources and there’s a lot of them as I don’t want base building to be too easy or boring.
    I want to work for it and earn my own money, work up to my own ship etc

      Yes, love this. I'll probably do my first playthrough for content, so going pretty fast, but then I'll go through it again and again over the years slowing down

      I would love that. Resources shouldn't be easy to obtain hence the need for pirates and national conflicts. If those resources are difficult to get then I plan on settling on a planet that is rich in resources. People are saying that if these planets are barren then they'll be boring. I don't see it that way. If you build it then the action will come.

      @@bossredd-77 from the dev leak last year the Bethesda dev confirmed planets will have procedurally generated outposts, bases, even cities. As well as junk, loot and random missions/vehicles.
      Most planets will have loads of stuff to find I think and they did say some
      Resources you won’t be able to get early on as they are on planets really far away

      I hear you..but you will get your first ship in the first hour as part of the main story..
      But ye..it will feels good when you go to a ship yard..and see that amazing engine that's way out of your price range..and you go away..and grind .or do quests..find resources,
      And it adds to the RPG.. because it makes money more valuable more necessary..and if a guy offers you a small reward..but someone else offers you a far greater reward to do something a bid despicable.....it makes that choice difficult..and interesting
      It also makes becoming a pirate actually viable and meaningful
      And then the feeling when you finally buy that part.and feel the difference it makes...that's what RPGs are about for me.that journey
      There's few things worse in an RPG like when money and resources mean nothing

      I think it will be like fallout 4 settlements. You control you/your ship as such and set up others to go between settlements/bases. I think it would be nice though to pick-up an npc who can pilot other craft to make a fleet.

      @@markanderson4679 i hope its not like Fallout 4 settlement building, actually i stoped playing Fallout 4 very early on cuze the base building put me off the way it was, so thoug it may had something, i dont know, never played it properly, was just wasting money
      but what i have seen so far in Starfiled its much more satisfiying

    I'm imagining modders going crazy with ship building! X-wing, Millennium Falcon, The Enterprise, The Milano, The Normandy etc Getting parts and interiors to work would be tough though!

    Ships as tools is my biggest hope for Starfield. Be it combat pilot, space trucker or explorer, your ship is the main tool of your trade. And if we can build up a fleet of purpose-built ships then we can be anything that we want to be. Todd has mentioned that Starfield is designed to be a forever game. Space gamers tend to love grinding for expensive ships and upgrades. The natural and purposeful grind that comes with building up this kind of toolbox is perfect content for every stage of the game.
    But we need to see more. Bethesda basically showed us the basics of what goes into every ship generically. They took care to not show off the components and modules that would make each ship unique. And I'll explain why those details are important. My hope is that the ship builder is designed as a flexible framework. We should be able to see that framework and understand what's launching with the game as well as what could be added by either Bethesda or modders later. We may see that ships may be fitted with claws and mining lasers. And even if we don't see such a ship in action then we would be able to infer that ship-based mining is in the game. And if that sort of ship can be in the game then the same game systems enabling that can be used to make a salvage ship. A large hauler may seem mundane. But maybe that hauler can be fitted with hydroponics. And maybe you place one of those in orbit above an otherwise hostile world to provide food to support your colony on the ground. Maybe another could be a colony ship. Another could be an airliner or carry other small ships. And none of this has to be in the game at launch so long as the framework is intelligently designed to handle it. Bethesda, what do we have to work with in the kitchen? This is what I want to know about Starfield more than absolutely anything else.

    I've seen this "reactor bar" in other games. Basically, you have a maximum limit and the more things you add, the more the bar will be filled. If you go over the limit, you can't install the item so you need to increase this "reactor bar" which makes sense because probable is related to the overall energy output from the reactor to feed energy to the ship.

    Shipbuilding will most likely steal many hours of gameplay, and i am here for all of it. My first ship will be Fifty-Fifty, as that is my chances of survival. It's also a reference to Grandia 2. My upgraded or second one however will be the heavy cargo ship Red Dwarf (also a reference).

    I remember spending more time building my Gummi Ship than anything else in Kingdom hearts, I also built a settlement at EVERY location in fallout 4. The systems in this game are so exciting!

    There is little I am more excited about with Starfield than ship building. I've been obsessed with science fiction ship building for most of my life, devouring the systems available in both pen & paper and computer games alike. The systems in computer games have typically been far eclipsed by those of pen & paper games, at least till now. The thing about Starfield that brings it head and shoulders above that of any other however is that we will be able to walk around inside our ships and interact with our crew!
    I do not expect the actual build mechanics to be more or better fleshed out than what I have seed to date, at least at first. The fact that the game can and will be modded however changes that. Over time, I expect the modding community will create a vastly more sophisticated and intricately nuanced build system (entirely optional of course) along with greatly expanded equipment options, both visually (internally and externally) as well as game mechanically.
    Ultimately I would not be surprised if Starfield gets modded to the point where an option will exist to 4x the game, to turn it into an explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate strategy game with a role playing interface. This will bring ship building to still an entirely different level where you'll be designing ships to handle fleet engagements flown by NPC crew.
    I do expect it will take a monster of a PC to handle the load mind you.

    At 9:23 of your video there appears to be yet another configuration of ship docked with the space station (on the right side). This one looks significantly different from the others we've seen. However, given the configurability of the ships, I don't think counting the number of ships in the trailer really adds much information. What may be more interesting is to point out the different configuration traits of the various faction ships (if there are any)... just a thought. Oh, and great video!

    Reactor / Equip Power is 100% something like Power Grid/Capacitor in other games... a sort of balancing/limiting tool to just how much you can throw on your ship and how long you can continue to fight before your "battery" dies.

    It's a matter of money for building ships, but we have to keep some for our equipment and resource purchase to build on the workbench to upgrade our weapon too.

    I am getting the impression that the game is going to start you out with your own ship. The idea seems to be that you will build up on that ship as you gain skills and money.
    Also hoping that you can have a fleet of ships. Not just to do assign them to haul goods between the outpost and trading ports but to work as a fleet fore engagements.

    Reactor power is the total amount of power you have to split between the ship systems listed above it, and equipment power is the amount of power it takes to power all systems at once, excluding the grav drive; this is because presumably, you'll only need to put power into the grav drive when you need to charge it up and use it, so you'd essentially power down your other systems in order to jump.

    So with the landers, the name of the landers say "3G" or "4G"...I am guessing this is relating to what gravity class planet they can land on. Earth being 1G so for planets with greater mass stronger landing gears will be required. Only a theory but it makes sense to me.

    The cockpit module looks like a shuttle. Would be a cool feature if it could detach from the rest of the ship and fly on its own.

      Now that you mention it, that's probably what would happen if your ship gets destroyed. But it would also mean you would lose millions of credits worth of ship parts, at which point most people would just reload the last save. Maybe a post release hardcore/survival mode with limited saving like fallout 4 and skyrim would fix this.

    It looked like the landing gear had thrusters on it.
    As thrusters were not noted in the description, I would assume that directional thrusters are automatic, and based on your main thruster, and that the landing gears give you the visual representation of them.
    This seems a good balance between details and playability to me.

    More than anything else, I'd like as close an approximation to the Rocinante as possible. If it takes Modders to sort it out, then so be it. But flying around in the Roci would pretty much make this game for me.

    Ship building is what peaked my interest in starfield, unfortunately i won't be able to play it at release because i don't have Xbox nor my pc can run it but eventually i'll dive into it when i upgrade my pc or buy an xbox and i hope it will be very soon.

    I want Space Station Dlc. There’s a station that’s under attack and taken over. Defeat the invaders and warlord and then you can customize the space station. Next I want even more clothing option. Can go to like a space fashion show. Dude the sky is the limit with this game.

    based on other games, it looks like the reactor power is the max output, and the equip power is what your combined equipment draws, so in that example you'd probably have to cycle between weapons rather than use them all at once, or shut off something like the gravity drive to use them all

    The naming 3G, 4G, 5G-landing gear makes me think of capability to land on planets with that scale of gravity. We already know of different Gs from the gameplay reveal video.

    First we get all the flexibility with this ship designer, then we know we will get the mod tools and people will add existing franchises and even make their own -- that alone is nigh on mind-blowing. This will indeed offer more than any other Bethesda Game Studio game, can't wait to play it. I know it will be a game with limitations and features that annoy me (all games have this) but I will take that with a proper space RPG, which is something that has been missing from game offerings ever since the first Elite debuted. Consider me giddily nerded.

    3:01 Reactor + Equip Power. Equip shows what is currently assigned (max?) for W0-2+Eng+Shd+Grav, Reactor shows what's left over or surplus. (You can count the pips, in the lower bar you still have 18).
    I'd assume assigning more engines to the build would pull from the reactor surplus and put more into equip power.
    P.S. I hope the ding haunts you in all your waking moments

    i think the ship variety that can be achieved is probably an “astronomical” number. what we see are mostly attempts of creating the average looking ship that fits the vision for the trailer, but i bet you can get pretty wacky with it (as long as you have the appropriate resources to get it off the ground). and what's interesting about this is that unlike the fallout 4 outposts, you will travel with your ship everywhere, so it's a much more hands-on experience with your creation - i think when mods arrive and we can import stickers, custom paint jobs, decorations, etc, to add on the ship it will be even wilder... i don't doubt we will see modders attempting to borrow the shape language from famous ship designs either... exciting stuff!

    If we can customize the inside of the ship and are able to place each and every mug, desk, light, etc....
    That on top of the settlement stuff?? That alone will be HOURS of gameplay.

    Another stellar video! My ship will be "The Flying Gnome". I can see the ships needing to be reconfigured for different missions. I'm picking cargo hauling missions, combat missions, rescue missions etc. It's going to add so much depth.
    One question that is bugging me is how far we can go inside without jumping to another system. Can we theoretically go from system to system on just thrusters?

      From one solar system to another on just thrusters? No. Though obviously theoretically possible so much time would pass. No I figure the game allows requires you to Grav Jump from system to system but then you can fly around each system but you still MUST Grav jump to each planet as again the distance between planets just like in our solar system is massive and makes ZERO sense to try and just fly their on thruster power. That would just be pointless and would take you FOREVER

    Like most of you, super excited for ship building. I hope you can build and maintain a fleet. Ships for combat, ships for boarding, ships for hauling. I hope you can build mega sized ships. I'd love to have a ship that fits smaller ships inside. ultimately, just hope all the game systems work well from the beginning. I hope that one can spend hours being a pirate, or base building, or questing, i hope for news soon on the game

    One thing I have not seen is PDC's, automated chain guns that engage nearby threats such as locked-on missiles and enemy ships.

    Nice video content wise. As a headphone wearer however, I wasn't very pleased with the high pitch bell tone as you were counting the different ship types. Just wanted to mention that as a positive critique, hope you don't mind. Have a great weekend.

    That reactor has a Mass of 52 too! ouch! lol.
    One thing I'm really curious about and not seen much on is how big of a variety of Companions we might have access to.
    Hopefully a large and growable offering and not limited slots like ME, KOTOR or even FO.

      I expect the companion 'slots' will limit the number of companions we can bring with us while exploring on foot. (This more for balance than anything else. That limit will likely quickly have a mod to expand or eliminate it.) It will not limit how many we can hire as ship and outpost crew.

      Most likely a few key pre-made detailed recruitable characters. While the rest is procedurally generated generic npc's. Since we probably can recruit ALOT of people to our bases, there must be hiring agencies or mechanic.

    hope they show us about hijack ship gameplay, like could we have multiple ship, or could our crew fly the other ship, or could we grind the ship part from hijack other ship than buying the part ourself.
    its could be more interesting if there a consequence, like if we hijack faction ship we could disguise to be part of that faction but the downside the enemy of that faction will attack us, the good side that faction could help us too

    That's looking really good & since the game will be finished when we can buy it that makes Starfield appear to be the better choice for a space game over Star Citizen. I don't really care for online so being a single player game isn't an issue for me.

    so excited for the ship building. for my first ship it will probably be the manitowoc, green bay or De pere. play a lot of space engineers and name almost every ship after a town in wisconsin mostly because im agent wisconsin on anything i dont use my real name in.

    I'm excited about this. I hope it's not super easy to get credits; it'd be nice to work to get a ship. I'm curious about how you go about getting one and if there are roles that start you off with one. I want to be broke and stuck on a planet for a while until I can eventually afford one. I'm just hoping there is enough to do on their civilized planets to make that fun.

    3 months late to the video, but I've been waiting to bingewatch alot of starfield videos before the June Direct. I'm extremely interested in the potential 'luxury' options. I've always loved what Cyberpunk 2077 did with their Corpo expensive level stuff. Even the apartment in corpo plaza was one of my favorites, and I hope to see something a bit similar, especially if ships have a sort of 'crew bunk' where you can sleep/store personal items on your ship as a sort of mobile home.

    So with regards to the bar and numbers by “reactor” and “equip power”, here’s my thoughts: the reactor is a measure of how much energy your reactor outputs constantly. Your equip power is the total power your equipment might use. I assume there will be a stored energy mechanic where using your weapons will require more energy than your reactor can output, thus draining your “batteries”. Equipment power is probably constant, but can be turned on/off to conserve energy.

    Probably call my ship the same thing I called my Lego ships when I was a kid, (🚀the hammer🚀) and if we are able to build more than one ship, I will have a ship for every different type of missions, battle, stealth, mining and speed.

    honestly the Ship "customization" or Ship Building as i see it, is not just the most unique thing in Starfield but in Space Sims and RPGs in general, as i have yet to come across ANY game/sim that allows you to fully customise/re-build your ship
    EDIT: also, i'm so glad that someone has done this, i've seen videos talking about planets and characters but this is the first one of found that focuses solely on the ships

      Er... There are many game systems that allow you to design your ships, but none of them let you walk around inside than and interact with your crew.

      @@panpiper Elite Dangerous - cosmetic appearance only, No Mans Sky - No Customization whatsoever, Microsoft Flight Sim - paint job only, Starfield - full ship re-build -- so name a game/sim where you can fully re-build your ship??? which is what the basis of my comment was about.

      @@scartekgaming A very non-exclusive list, meaning I am sure I am forgetting loads of others: Space Engineers, Kerbal Space Program, StarMade, Empyrion - Galactic Survival, Terra Invicta, Space Haven, Spaceship Simulator, Starship EVO, Avorion, Ostranauts, Distant Worlds: Universe, Nimbatus - The Space Drone Constructor, Spacelines From The Far Out, Cosmoteer: Starship Architect & Commander, Star Ruler, FTL: Faster Than Light... (There ARE 'many' others.)
      There might be a few there with relatively limited build options and some (many) have no element to permit you to actually walk around in your ships. Furthermore these are just the computer game build systems. There are loads more from pen and paper. I spent a year and a half's spare time designing the perfect war fleet in Traveler High Guard 40 years ago.

    Ship #4: That's a Crimson Fleet Haunt. You see the name of this ship class as it's being shot at ~ 10:01
    Ship #6: I don't know if that's a transport or a space station? It looks like it has engines, but without a plume, it's hard to tell
    Ship #7: This would be the aft view of the Ranger shown in the Ship Building section. The ship docked at the station is a new design
    Ship #8: I believe this to be a low-angle glamour shot of the Longsword I shown in the Ship Building section
    Ship #9: The CF Haunt again, being targeted by the Frontier
    Ship #10: The targeted ship is new, I think, but the firing ship is the Longsword I
    Ship #11: This appears to be the Frontier with all the mods they added in the Ship Building section
    Ship #12: The firing ship here is another CF Ghost, the targeted ship is new, I believe
    Ship #15: The CF Haunt again
    What strikes me as interesting is that so many of the pirate designs are being shown as being flown by the PC. Interesting but not surprising: we have confirmation from both Todd and Pete that we can hijack other ships. I'm hoping this means we can eventually have an entire fleet of ships, all running missions or trade routes like in FO4.

    9:23 I'm not sure if it's a station module or a ship docked with the station but that long black section on the far right of the station could be another design, those look like engines on the back.

    The most amazing thing I have seen in videos. Was by ObsidianAnt or light. I think ObsidianAnt. He talkes about all the monitors actually displaying things and you can check them. Accept for a few at the top of the ship showing a few same display monitors. That's pretty cool.

      @@starfieldsignal I assume it's monitoring things in real time and you can check them maybe even a just things. Bethesda is good at small details like this. But Starfield is going to be like no other. I've been gaming for about 34 years. I'm 39. It's been Todd's dream to make a game like this. That's why they aren't holding back. They finally have the tech to do so.
