I wanted to share a great Pat Metheny story. I took my wife and two young kids to see Pat perform at the Blue Note in NYC years ago. It was first come, first serve seating and we waited at the front of the line and got to sit right in front of him. At the end of the concert, Pat looked at my two kids and said over the mic, "You two have great parents," and then he gave each of my kids a guitar pick from the concert. On the way out, all of the other adults were patting us on the back in good fun saying, "Wow, to have your parenting skills vindicated by Pat Metheny!" I draw the, "Well, Pat Metheny says I'm a good parent" card every time somebody says something even remotely negative about my parenting skills. In all seriousness, my wife and I have seen Pat many times over the years and have brought our kids a few times. We sat behind his wife and kids at one concert. I love how the greats really want young kids exposed to their music. Just another reason why he is hands down my favorite musician. Pat, if you are listening, thanks for that evening. My family will never forget it.
Pat represents the freedom my youth. I grew up on Pat, my kids grew up on Pat, and now my grandkids are growing up on Pat. His music is the soundtrack of my life.
I'll be celebrating my 61st birthday on Christmas Eve this year. I've been a fan since 1977...this track takes me to one of those places that I never want to come back from.
Me too. I've been a fan since 1977. I saw him perform at Kent State University back then. I went right out and bought Bright Size Life and then Watercolors.
This composition is one of those songs that just brings you to tears and when asked why you're crying, you can't explain it. It's just something that this song draws out from your soul
I began to cry just reading your post. But, I can explain it : these are tears of joy because I realize I'm not the only one, we are many, to cry without being able to explain why listening to that wonderful piece. This is the ultimate proof we are human beings, with a heart, a soul, and feeling the same emotion, regardless of anywhere we are on the planet. Just listened to this the other day for the first time. Always loved Metheny. What makes this unusual is that everything revolves around 3's. The meter is 6 (2 sets of 3 beats). And the phrasing is 9 bars, which is highly unconventional, but is in fact 3 sets of 3 bars of 6 beats. I believe (although I'm just fleshing this out now, and this could be inaccurate) the chords which are basically one change per bar (3 beats) are as follows: C / / DbMaj7 / / EbMaj7 / / Bb7#11 / / Bbm9 / / Eb13 / / GbMaj7 / / Fm9 / / Ab13 / / - And this repeats as far as I can tell through the whole song
This music apparently simple is so genius because it talks to souls. Anybody can put pictures that matter from his / her life on this music and have the strong impression it was written for him / her.
Complexity layered upon elegant simplicity--just when you think you have an idea of where his composition is going, he takes you in a completely different musical direction, and then he takes you back to where it began, just like a well-told story. He's still at the top of his craft after forty years..
I used to listen to Pat Metheny in my truck while plowing snow in a very large parking lot up here in Michigan...and always when no one was around usually just before dawn. A fantastic soundtrack for my life from 1978 till now...started with As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls to Offramp and on down the line. 6 beers, a couple of doobies and a great sound system...all the ingredients, in my book, for a nice evening and a nice sunrise in the snow. This is my favorite composition of his, hands down. It has been such a privilege to follow PM’s musical journey for the past 40 years, and to hear how amazing his music is becoming.
Today i listened to this on the radio as i was going home...Wind started when the music was growing...i felt Wind as it was the music itself....i had to close my eyes and Felt so emotional i could melt into it...pure beauty and love..the emotions of feeling alive in such a boring life. Great.
It’s hard to express the joy of listening to new music that moves you for the very first time. And while his music gets better each and every listen, I lament that I’ll never get to hear this piece for the first time again. Extraordinary music from an extraordinary musician. A life’s work.
This song is so beautiful. The first time I heard it I stopped everything. I knew, just knew, this was an important song. And it was. It totally reflects this period in time to me. My anger. The pain. Wanting more as and being shut down every time. And trying to keep a little hope that gets smaller each day.
I first heard Pat playing with another youngster Jaco Pastorius on the ECM album Bright Size Life. That was 40 years ago. Gary Burton in the liner notes said of Pat: "I had to admit he played pretty well: an incredible blend of Missouri, hip, chops and all those teeth." I saw and heard Pat play this Saturday night in Sydney. Not much and at the same time everything has changed...thanks for the journey Pat!
Where do I start...whatever is going on in the world or with you...Pat Matheny's music just totally take you to the outer limits and makes you forget about everything....when the music ends...you're back to reality...what a genius...what a Musical God!!!!
I need this now. I am old. I am sick. My white cell count is too low. If the plague that is visiting us decides to visit me, well, I have a problem. But among many examples of the wonders of existence I have this song. These sounds. Sounds not random, but intentional. I can cling to this. In the ocean of doubt, of mortality, I have this hope.
@Karyn Moore It's like his seminal record in the 70's was "Bright Size Life", then the 80's was “Still Live Talkin", then in the 90's it was "Imaginary Day". And now this, he just keeps going, like this All American Folk Hero, like a Goku or something.
As I sat front row at a recent Pat Metheny concert, he played for 3 hours. He truly loves what he does. His music is timeless. A boy from Missouri, Same River, is beautiful. Wonder if he's single?
Victoria he has been off the shelf for a while....agree what this Missouri fellow does he loves to the heights... and it is timeless music...."You Are" is an amazing, enigmatic chart... as was "You" from the Speaking of Now Album and Tour....
It's the new era. The ranks of the previous works are drawn. Echoes of the best soundtracks written by Metheny (A map of the world, among all). Great piece. Really great. Good job. I really wait for the new cd.
So grateful that in 1983 I heard the song "It's For You" on an over the air New Wave radio program. I was captivated then, and still now on the brilliance and artistry of Pat!
Now this is incredible music. Just pure and raw and between metheny and sanchez its unparalleled. There is patience and care built into this song, its not some overeager technician trying to show off his chops, its two seasoned legends making something beautiful, i mean this is some of the most original music ever. This chord progression is making some daring changes, while always keeing that repeating note throughout the entire aong without it becoming annoying. This is rocket science disguised as beauty
Pat shines in any setting including solo and small ensembles. But, somehow, I feel many of his compositions shine brightest with large groups of musicians. This is one of his compositions that requires Cecil B. DeMille - like production. Fresh and familiar all at once. Oh, and it's great to hear Luis Conte add his touch along with Antonio. Perfect drumming/percussion made perfecter!
Such a beautiful song. My brother (who passed away in 2015) and I grew up listening to Pat Metheny's music. When I listen to this song especially, I know my brother would have loved it too. When I think of him and listen to this song, it makes me cry.
For all of the Americana of many previous titles, I can't help but feel that Pat embraces the ethos of European Jazz like few other Americans. His music is all the greater for it.
This album has stopped me in my tracks... fùçķìñģ hell... what a brilliant masterpiece. I can't help but feel there's a hommage to past work and Lyle Mays.... but unbelievably brilliant and fantastic album... each track with multiple layers....
Back in 1978 when I bought the "Pat Metheny Group" vinyl, I remember saying "This guy's good but his music will never amount to much of anything." More than 40 years later I'm STILL pullin' foot out of my mouth...
I've been listening to since I was a kid and he inspired me to start playing the guitar. Now I've been playing for twenty years and I teach children and I hope I inspire them too.
Wonderful of course .... Pat always comes through with brillance and genius and inspiration of another level and dimension of reality...bless from Puenta Blue Mtn Ecuador 🏵️🙏🌺
Pat's music has been in my life since 1985 and is essential to me functioning as a person. I could write for hours on theory and emotions but simply this is just an amazing piece of music doing what music should.
I have been listening to Pat Metheny's music for 40 plus years and it has been an emotional experience. Thank you .......my older brother introduced me to this music years ago before he left for duty in the Army. The album cover.....it has just dawned on me....Kansas, I think that's where Pat is from .....unique idea....anyway, your music has changed my life forever!
Pat I love how you always represent, from your phenominal music to your amazing album cover art your Midwest Missouri/Kansas roots. You find and express the open spaces, the isolation, the calm, the storm and the beauty of a part of the world I call home in a way few great artists have.
Pat, God has blessed you, and you bless us. Thank you so much for this amazing music... you have been a mentor I've never met, a bright and joyful spot in my life for over 40 years. I could not have done justice to music without the inspiration and power you have given me by standing on your shoulders in my own clumsy way. Thank you again & again, Maestro. You will live forever! - Keith
Un' altra emozione dell'immenso Pat ... e come non riconoscere alla batteria Antonio Sanchez !! ... Grazie stupendi musicisti mi riconciliate con il genere umano ...
Beautiful, introspective, emotional, take us to amazing distant places. In fact, I'm listening this song over and over, and I couldn't stop until now. ;) A big hug form Brazil!
This ain't jazz...It is something far better; pure music that eludes all too convenient categorisation. Great stuff from PM and his group of diverse collaborators.
Pat Metheny to me is the gift that keeps on giving. This is one of the most beautiful pieces he has ever created. I am having trouble finding words to describe it except it is a natural high that i have had yet to experience. I am so thankful to you Pat.
Would be honored if you joined this private group on Facebook. Some of the members have worked with Pat .. even recorded, performed, and toured with him. His brother is even one of our members. Another has performed with 22 Grammy award winner "Chick Corea." facebook.com/groups/2364082496/about/
I hear something that puts me in mind of the incredible Alfa Mist. Love you Pat ,been a fan since the 70s. You've always been my favorite because I could always feel something deep. I think Alfa Mist is going to keep this heartfelt music going
Thank you, Pat, for helping me come to know my better self through your example and your music! You may not realize this, but when I heard this song, I could only think of one thing. For whatever reason, (and I don't understand it either), because when Moses asked God what His name was, He said "I am." It's hard to explain, but the closest example I can give to this is that the Holy Spirit inspired this. When the iconographers of the Orthodox Christian Church create these amazing "windows into Heaven", they have to follow very specific rules in order to ensure that they don't put their own perspectives into them. All they know is that they're blessed to be able to create these Holy icons. If you gaze into anyone of them, you'll see that there's no personal interpretation involved in their development. This is important, because the Church has always used them to teach and inspire everyone who gazes into them. We worship God, and we venerate the Saints and events depicted in them, because they were and are given to us through the inspiration and teaching of the Holy Spirit. We know this, because the "icon not made by hands", as it is called, appeared on a cloth that St. Veronica used to wipe our Lord's face and head after He passed out for the second time on His way to Golgotha. This icon is still at St. Katherine's Monastery on Mt. Sinai, and it is still preserved in its original condition to this day. St. Veronica only discovered this when she took the cloth out of her dress pocket and discovered His Holy Image on it. The Church realized this, and St. Luke became the first iconographer. He depicted our Lord's resurrection and the icon of Holy Pentecost. He was also inspired to create the icon of Mary, the Mother of God or Directress, because she is the direct link to Christ who became as a result of the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit as we read in Luke, chapter 2. It's what we call a Holy Mystery, and we honor her as the greatest Saint of all. She is our Mother, too. It may be a mystery as to how you don't come up with anything such as some sort of setting or how you find it hard to come up with some sort of image or experience that inspires you to create your music. Perhaps it's because God is using your ability to improvise your music the way you do. Perhaps He wants to allow you to make such amazing music in such a way that if you tried to create any music with any preconceived notions or ideas, they might get in the way of what you're trying to accomplish. It's taken me a wile to write all this down, because I had to pray for the words to come to me, and it's a strong conviction; I realize that. I hope that it helps you make sense of the why you do what you do, because I've been learning so much about improvisation. I have to set aside anything and everything in order for the music to flow through me, and since I got this conviction, I find it much easier to let the music develop. After I clear my head and stop "trying" to create it, I realize that the creator of music, "The Chief Musician", (God), allows His grace to fall upon us and inspire us. Do you have to put away all thoughts, and set aside all your cares in order to let the music happen? I have so much I want to tell you in person, and I've been trying to meet you since 1982. Perhaps I needed to experience what I have to learn how to appreciate just how powerful and amazing music is. At a time when so many people aren't willing to experience it for what it is, because what's coming out of the so-called entertainment industry is hardly music in my humble opinion, I'm hoping we're going to hear a shift back in the right direction, because God knows we need more uplifting and positive music these days. It's so amazing that I've been so blessed to hear your music over the years, and it just keeps getting better. I'm so glad I got to attend your second concert at the Variety Play House on Saturday, Feb. 12. I've tried for so long to get a front row seat, and I thought I had until I got there and noticed it wasn't one. You made that evening so memorable, especially when you played that solo collection of songs at the end, and I got to get closer to you thanks to Larry, the head of security. I've wanted to sing "First Circle" with you for so many years, especially after that evening in 1983 when you played at Cafe 290. I was the one who guessed that it was in 18-8. I can't help but wonder if anyone ever got it correct? You really gave me a huge boost of confidence, even though I was being threatened by my father's mother and him with being disowned if I decided to become a professional singer. Now, I'm pursuing that dream, and it's all because of your inspiration. I know I need to do what I've loved doing all my entire life, and my family finally realizes this. My mother always wanted me to pursue this dream, but she was too afraid to openly show my dad and others just how much it means to me. Now, they all know, and I'm glad they're alive to finally see what it means to me. I had to find the courage to face them and tell and show them despite going through years of illness and extreme pain, not to mention two brain surgeries. That's just the tip of the iceberg of my experience, but I'm glad to say that I've forgiven them completely. That's why I said your music has helped me find my better self. For years, I was lead to believe that we human beings were the worst of creation. I couldn't trust anyone, and I believed that we were nothing more than a pile of crap. I wanted to believe otherwise, but my childhood experiences were so totally mixed up that I nearly became convinced even after I heard your interview with Russ Davis in 1982. I was attacked in midtown Atlanta in the spring of 1983. It's even more amazing that the song "The End of the Game" could be the accompaniment of what took place that morning while on a dropoff lesson during my mobility training. Then, I heard it that day, and it quickly set the tone of that whole experience from beginning to end when my mobility instructor, Dave Mueller, caught up with me and my attacker and put him in a Half Nelson until the police arrived. Thank God he had a mobile phone! So how does one come up with music that just seems to be the soundtrack of so many peoples' lives? What I said above is the only answer I could find, or it became clear to me. Please forgive me for such a long comment, but I simply had to put it somewhere, and it only seems fitting that I should put it here! I just hope that if you read this that it's an acceptable answer to the question of how. I've been listening to so many of your interviews, and I can't keep this to myself any longer. We're all just so blessed to be able to listen to your music. I wish I could afford to come to Red Bank, N. J. to see you in September, because I don't know if I can wait for you to come back to Atlanta. Oh, and thank you for your mask! Mine kept collapsing, and I found myself feeling really woozy at one point. I had to leave the show for a few minutes, and when I opened it and put it on, I finally realized why I felt the way I did. Even Larry noticed I wasn't doing that well, so he took me aside after I got out of the "necessary room" to let me know there were some masks at the merch counter. It not only smelled so clean and new, I could breathe so much better! I'd buy two more of them if I could in case we have to use them later, but I had to watch my money. Instead, I bought a copy of "From This Place". Again, thank you so much for all you do, because you love what you do, and you've taught so many people about the importance of doing what we love to do, because it matters. I owe you a huge debt of gratitude. With kindest regards, Anna PS: That's my Artist and Baptismal name, and I'm on CdBaby with an ep I made in 2007 called "Christos Anesti" which is Greek for Christ is Risen. Thanks to Monica Matthews for her help making it. I couldn't have done it without her and, indeed, the Great "I Am".
While in an OCEAN of excellent Metheny releases, this is but another drop of water, I really look forward to it's release. Pat's records are a soul-balm, and so far this record promises to be killer.
It's amazing, unbelievable. I've got more than a thousand original pieces of Metheny in my disc collection, and this new composition blew my mind... still. How can he do that ? this is insane.
I am blessed to have the opportunity to met pat , he is a amazing person. thanks for taking us on your musical journey . Can't wait hear this live . Bravo Pat Bravo !!!
After more than 40 years of composing he can still find the good notes! This tune is a mixture of the greek modes. With just a couple of simple notes he moves them around from one mode to another with disconcerting ease by adding little by little the other instruments on top. You expect the melodic line to continue and he suddenly changes tonality. Pat is really an amazing talented musician. He has been managing to compose very complex tunes which sounds easy to listen to but the writing of the score is not that straight forward! He masters harmony extremely well. Well done Pat. Keep up making us vibrating emotionally!

I've been rolling with Pat since the mid 90s. I'm 64 now and his music is still refreshing...
Where do I start...whatever is going on in the world or with you...Pat Matheny's music just totally take you to the outer limits and makes you forget about everything....when the music ends...you're back to reality...what a genius...what a Musical God!!!!
Fan and devoted listener. As much as I miss PMG, Pat's music is like fine wine, it gets better and it's always fresh in a new and exciting direction.
Bill Yard Stay Safe Bill!!!
i truly hope you're OK now, Bill.
Tell me you're still with us, Bill?
He's done it again folks, he's done it again.
Amen!
Yes he did🤗🥰
@Karyn Moore It's like his seminal record in the 70's was "Bright Size Life", then the 80's was “Still Live Talkin", then in the 90's it was "Imaginary Day". And now this, he just keeps going, like this All American Folk Hero, like a Goku or something.
2 Birds1 Stone yes, yes
As I sat front row at a recent Pat Metheny concert, he played for 3 hours. He truly loves what he does. His music is timeless. A boy from Missouri, Same River, is beautiful. Wonder if he's single?
Victoria he has been off the shelf for a while....agree what this Missouri fellow does he loves to the heights... and it is timeless music...."You Are" is an amazing, enigmatic chart... as was "You" from the Speaking of Now Album and Tour....
oh..........man. first time hearing this piece. So beautiful. what a feeling of life.
With the passing of Lyle yesterday, this is hitting my spirit in in strange, yet beautiful way.
No no no!!! Lyle Rest In Peace
I just wrote the same thing!
It's the new era. The ranks of the previous works are drawn. Echoes of the best soundtracks written by Metheny (A map of the world, among all). Great piece. Really great. Good job. I really wait for the new cd.
Pat is an avante garde genius, and this is stunning. Its got that "numinous" unknown and even celestial feel that is so special and rare.
This cut is classic Pat...so melancholic and yet so filled with love and light.
Super modern arrangement, and then you hear that legendary guitar tone. Awesome
It gave chills! A masterpiece, as a fan of Pat since 2003, I can agree it only gets better.
Sending hummingbird hugs to Pat Metheny!!! Your music makes me escape! It's so beautiful!!!
Pat never disappoints.. What a masterpiece ❤ 2
From San Lorenzo to the present - in awe
Pat shines in any setting including solo and small ensembles. But, somehow, I feel many of his compositions shine brightest with large groups of musicians. This is one of his compositions that requires Cecil B. DeMille - like production. Fresh and familiar all at once. Oh, and it's great to hear Luis Conte add his touch along with Antonio. Perfect drumming/percussion made perfecter!
Oh Dear, I just stumbled across Pat's UA-cam page and found out HE"S BACK!!!!! What a wonderful gift!! Thanks Pat you're fans needed this!
Full of harmonic subtlety, delicate colors and nuanced shadings.
I have to say this is absolutely beautiful creativity .Music to enter into heaven.
Amazing tune Pat Metheny Group, Steely Dan, Michael Franks, Joni Mitchell and Kenny Rankin are my favourites of all time enough said 😉
You have exquisite taste my friend!
savariaxa good taste in music!!
There are no words! awesome! Thanks! I love people, Love You Pat! Greetings from Poland
Non c'è nulla da fare, gli Dei si esprimono per mezzo di Lui...💚 Gods talks through Him. Pat is back, introspective and powerful.
RIP Lyle Mays 🙏🏻🎹 what an incredible catalog of work you left for us .. peace ☮️
- Keith
Un' altra emozione dell'immenso Pat ... e come non riconoscere alla batteria Antonio Sanchez !! ... Grazie stupendi musicisti mi riconciliate con il genere umano ...
emotion at 100%
Beautiful, introspective, emotional, take us to amazing distant places. In fact, I'm listening this song over and over, and I couldn't stop until now. ;) A big hug form Brazil!
Contemplative gentle ascension elevating movement towards the innermost peace.
Truth...

WOW! You said it all in one sentence!
An outstanding new breath of creativity from Metheny,,, we were waiting for this to happen.... and it did.... really interstellar stuff ....
Brilliant, electric. Thank you Pat Metheny and fellow artists.
Mike Lawler
Antonio Sanchez on percussion,, wow!
My guitar teacher said I must listen to your music. I certainly knew the reason.💝
Would be honored if you joined this private group on Facebook. Some of the members have worked with Pat .. even recorded, performed, and toured with him. His brother is even one of our members. Another has performed with 22 Grammy award winner "Chick Corea." facebook.com/groups/2364082496/about/
I can't help crying...
Pat Metheny bigger than ever....❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Music for the New Earth Rising....and there shall be a New Heaven and New Earth ....bless from Ecuador 🏵️
This track is magnetic and magical. Wow!
I hear something that puts me in mind of the incredible Alfa Mist. Love you Pat ,been a fan since the 70s. You've always been my favorite because I could always feel something deep. I think Alfa Mist is going to keep this heartfelt music going
one of the greatest compositions i ever heard...this song is historic
Thank you, Pat, for helping me come to know my better self through your example and your music! You may not realize this, but when I heard this song, I could only think of one thing. For whatever reason, (and I don't understand it either), because when Moses asked God what His name was, He said
"I am."
It's hard to explain, but the closest example I can give to this is that the Holy Spirit inspired this.
With kindest regards,
Anna
PS: That's my Artist and Baptismal name, and I'm on CdBaby with an ep I made in 2007 called "Christos Anesti" which is Greek for Christ is Risen. Thanks to Monica Matthews for her help making it. I couldn't have done it without her and, indeed, the Great "I Am".
I cannot stop listening to this track.
Pat Metheny! Yes! Since the 70's plus. I'm a young 69 beautiful years. Thank you Pat for the musical ride of my life.
I can't stop playing these two notes and the bass line on piano. That's insanely it ! Crazy sensation of perfect match with emotion.
..Nice......I keep singing Linda May Han Oh chant in changing octaves and different keys
Truly amazing... Wow. Sound engineering, musicianship, interplay, composition - all are at a stunning level.
It's so beauty piece. This kind of thing makes me feel proud to be human.
Yesssss! Wonderfully so ❤️
My favorite track in a long time. Haunting melody that soars. Glad to hear a return to some vocals.
The entire album has the vibe of this tune, a mysterious suspense.
Pat Metheny is a privileged musician ... he is a great instrumentalist and a great composer ...
Nuevamente Pat nos lleva por los viajes de nuestra nostalgia...como he dicho: Pat Metheny Group es la sublimizacion del Jazz Fussion.
