  • We believe this was filmed in 1997 or 98. Adrian was about 16 years old here. He spent 3 summers learning to flintknap with Cecil and Emory Coons in Oregon. He loves knapping the big blades but is also proficient in the little stuff. It's rough but Randy was learning the camera and Adrian was learning to be on camera. We hope you enjoy.

Theodore Frank was the best flint knapper around. RIP Ted

    That's better than I've done.
Via D.C. Waldorf German gunflint knappers got silicosis and that was the first recorded industrial disease. May be a good idea to wear a mask.

Pretty cool . I’ve never watched it being done before. Is it as brittle as it looked ? I’d have probably busted it in half right off the bat . Thanks for sharing

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is an igneous rock.

I'd like to ask a question to you guys at Karamat. I've been wearing a neck knife into the woods for the last couple of months and there's a bunch people telling me that it'll snag and choke me. I usually see you guys wearing neck knife, have you ever had it snagging onto something?

Hopefully karamat will jump in on this but here is my take. In my opinion there IS a small chance of getting the cord hung on something so it is best to use cord that will break. I use a leather boot lace. it is plenty strong to secure the knife but will break under strong pressure. I would not use paracord or similar material.

I have never had an issue with getting hung up. Usually if I am doing something where I feel the knife would get hung up, the knive gets tucked into the shirt/sweater/coat. Lori

When you see someone wearing a neck knife they usually have something to do with Mors Kochanski.
Wearing a neck knife when not in use we put it under our shirt. If you had a straight blade knife and had the sheath on your belt it is tough to put back in and will see the knife laying around. When one has winter clothes on, having a knife on the belt is tough to get at. Having a neck knife such as a mora is easy to get at and one usually puts the knife in its sheath rather than laying it down when making adjustments. If one is in such tight places that one could get the neck knife hung up in a tree one would not be moving too fast through that thick brush and many more items are going to give you trouble such as your rucksack or a belt knife that one could easily lose.
Maybe a folding pocket knife should be your choice. We have numerous youtube videos on knife use.
