In Old, the latest thriller from the maestro of twists M. Night Shyamalan, a group of strangers find themselves trapped on a mysterious beach. They discover time itself has been accelerated, and they begin to rapidly age - their lives reduced to a single day. We're unpacking the films story and overall mystery, including what is causing them to age and who is behind the whole thing, as well as explaining the ending.

I’m 16 and this was the first movie I watched in theaters alone. This lovely elderly couple got tickets too. As we were about 15 minutes early and the only ones in the theater; I overheard the wife asking her husband if they should ask if I would like to sit with them and being generally worried about me being alone. Her husband assured her that I would be fine and they could keep an eye on me as I was two rows in front of them. It was so sweet!!!
That's the sweetest damn thing, love it
That is such an adorable story!
I love old people there so fun
That's too nice to post on a horror movie comment board!
The older you get the more movies you'll go watch alone so it's nice when someone wants to watch it with you
The actors they chose for the older children were on point! They looked so much alike. Even the older Trent in his 50s looked so much like his father. Shyamalan did an amazing job choosing the actors.
It's almost like he hired a professional casting director....

Also because of that, they will have a really hard time to learn to be an adult now, because you need time to develop and understand life

The film itself has an interesting history behind it's creation. Shyamalan got the graphic novel this film was based on as a birthday gift from one of his kids. He loved it so much, he purchased the rights to make the movie. But of course he had to change things within the original story here and there like most adaptations.
That's such a wholesome way to choose a story to adapt!
Personally I'm glad he changed pieces because I read the novel and....it kinda sucks

@@Prizzlesticks He never explains anything. He just recaps the entire movie. But at least it's not just a text to speech robot voice
He's the best when it comes to shining light on any aspects that may need explaining. What Lies Below is a prime example. I watched so many videos of people attempting to explain that film, but like you said all they did was give a shallow recap of the events without actually going into any details regarding what's actually going on in the story.
This guy cleared up ALL my questions that all those other videos failed to answer.
You got to Recap, throw some opinions in but mainly explain the how and why as sometimes people dont get it or it left too vague like half of the movies he covered.

Finding out the children have aged quickly is a vital piece of info in this scenario. I am still getting the feeling that those kids would have noticed their growth a lot sooner than the time it took for their parents inevitably noticing/being told.
They grew up with each other, they go to school with different grades, with varying average/median heights and structures.. surely the oldest would have been wise enough to know, "my brother went from looking like a toddler to a teen in a couple of hours, that's not normal.. I need an adult!"
kids are stupid tho... they all dont act the same
@@kirttnabala2385 they also have sex without knowing what IT is and have the mental capacity to say “they needed to do it like 10 times to get pregnant” because at this point they have not told them the story of the stork

I would have thought they would have felt the growing pains.

You might be the only person to review this movie and compliment it instead of crapping all over it. I still haven't gotten the chance to watch it yet but I feel like everyone hops on the I hate Shyamalan train now. So thank you for being more balanced
its hard not to hate the guy. he acts like he's the next kubrick or something, all the while pumping out movies that are stuck in the early 2000. he also butchered tf out of avatar the last airbender. i can go on, but you get the gist.
A lot of people definitely jump on the hate train unfairly. Honestly I love Shyamalan movies - even when they’re bad they’re just a lot of fun to watch. But even I have to admit Old was a complete mess to the point I couldn’t even enjoy it. It was a pretty bad movie.
The movie’s decent. I read the graphic novel when the first trailer dropped, so I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular.
There is a really well done body horror shot toward the end though
The concept behind the movie isn't bad. But there are so many glaring plotholes and the execution is poor. If months go by in minutes, hair and nail growth would be absolutely out of control, not to mention other bodily functions. The convenience of "oops, you didn't see me for a while, now I'm played by a different actor!" is just too much. And then M. Night has the gall to pass this off as a horror/thriller when the plot has about the depth of a mediocre X-files episode.
Hate to break it to you, but that train has been full of people since he did the last airbender and it probably isnt gonna ever stop
Especially since he has to add a twist to every movie he does, pretty much ruining the surprise of the twist since it’s already expected to happen by anyone who’s watched more than 2 of his movies
Y’know, hit or miss, at least M. Night gets to make whatever kind of movie HE wants. Very few of his films feel like there’s a lot of pressure from producers. A lot of filmmakers don’t have that freedom.
This. That’s what I like. The artistic freedom.
If people don't know, the movie is based on the graphic novel "Sandcastle" by Frederik Peeters and Pierre Oscar Lévy. I really recommend you give it a read ; it's a bit different from the movie but also stunningly morbid and so creepy in it's original drawn form !

The messed up part is the children having to grow up in a day. One of them conceiving and delivering a baby with the mental stage of a 6 year old. The others, although fairly young, had lived half a life and had health issues that they supposedly“contributed” to curing. The kids are collateral damage.
I have to admit one of the reasons I didn't watched it in theaters was because of the whole kid got pregnant stuff... The implications was just wayy to dark for me

My favorite movie reviewer hands down! I found myself checking throughout the day to see if his new video had dropped!
Tbh this movie has some of the saddest endings, there’s little that can be done for those kids in adult bodies. Especially the 6 year old. I can only hope the aunt is able to accept them and get them into the help they need.
That’s what I’m saying. People aren’t really getting the big picture of the ending. It’s depressing as fuck, literally these kids have no experience and their parents are dead. They don’t know anything about adulting and are already old. It’s really a very depressing ending when reality starts to set in.
Dont you guys know? life begins at 40. They will obviously qualify for disability, their both still kids (technically). So if they cant grow up and mature fast and be independent they will still be taken care of by their aunt/ or society. Its not so bad. My bro has a sadder life.
Then ending kind of reminds me of The Cabin in the Woods with that "something bigger is behind this" thing and, honestly, I hope more movies (not too many; the genre doesn't need to be saturated) with that premise come out bc it's probably one of my favorite tropes thanks to TCitW.
Cabin in the woods is my fav, and definitely much scarier than this one lmao

The scariest part for me was wondering if "Warren & Waren" was a clue for "Johnson & Johnson" 🤔😅
That is the connection, yes. I doubt J&J are doing this. But that is how you get away with saying big pharma without having to pay J&J lol

The kids asking strangers about their jobs is awkward but have logic in the context, as the hotel kid must surveil the guest about "low risk" or "hi risk" jobs: a young dancer is unlikely to have an health issue. A cop is a No-no, as he is most probably to be investigated if he goes missing. People wanted: health careers as they can take care of the people on the beach to live longer.
Yeah, IF you assume the kid was trying to help the bad guy, which doesn't seem to be the case. Also they invited them into the hotel because they had the health issues in the first place (and got their medicine right at the entrance) so it makes no sense to look for potential targets on the beach, when they were selected long before that.
@@dominikpecuch2177 since the bad.guy commands the boy to play with other boys I assume the boy was working for them, but he tried to help his new friend. And yes, the staff knew about health issues of most of the guests (the ones with reservations), but there are always guests with no reservartions that just show up at most hotels to spent the day without actually registering. It make sense to me to try to have the maximun of information of all the people, even if they go there for just some hours.
@@Humbertcc1 He "commanded" him to play with the other kids, the kids which won't go to the beach, so the kid can actually have friends instead of them disappearing after one day. Which implies the bad guy knows everything about all of the guests, or at least knows who will be tested/sacrificed on the beach even without kid. What you described could be true, IF the script mentioned any of that at all, but since it's not in the movie, that's not a fact.
Honestly, I just think it's something kids do. I've volunteered with and babysat a lot of children and they all love to know what grown-ups do for a living, since they are in that stage of wondering about future jobs.
Also, the management of the hotel/experiment knows everything about everyone in there, there's no implication at any point that walk-ins are accepted. Even if they are, the laboratory clearly has the means to learn more about these people using their surveillance, databases and whatever else they have at hand. Using a kid is just stupid - people can lie or refuse to asnwer, there's no guarantee they'll get any useful information.
@@mariaah3073 I don't know, if I am in charge of such operation I wouldn't leave the loose end of a kid running free asking things to strangers and becoming friends with the sons of the people I'm willing to kill. There is no reason for a kid being at the hotel if he's not a guess unless he's working for the bad guy. On the other side, I'd let the kid asking things to strangers if I really need to know everything about everyone, and he'd be the perfect person for the job because 1) no one would suspect of a child and 2) like you said, curiosity and that kind of questions are perfectly normal in kids. But yeah, you're probably right and I'm reading too much into a small part of the movie, but I really liked the idea of the kid working for the manager as it explained to me reason why he's there.
I've been watching your videos for 5-6 years now and I just want to say I'm glad I did! Amazing stuff as always. Thanks, man!

Makes sense they would be held accountable, not by the average middle class families they brought in there but for the famous rapper to that beach mistake or no mistake there´s no way his family will not demand compensation money from them.
It´s like when Sarah Lynn died in Bojack Horseman and as soon as the mother got intel that Bojack was deliberately negligent and it cost her daughter her life she sued the crap out of him, for all his worth.
I appreciate the ending! Atleast it wasn’t totally in despair, someone made it out and they were able to help stop this mess!
It bothered me that Kara wasn’t as distraught that her baby died but I realized that even though she carried it to term physically, she wouldn’t have the same bond a mother would have with her fetus as it wasn’t psychologically only a few minutes for her
Also she was mentally just a toddler
She was also mentally, still a child.
Also, mentally, she was still a toddler.
Yeah. She was only pregnant for about 45 mins, knew she was pregnant for 30 at the most, and the baby was stillborn. Not to mention she probably still had the mentality of a child somewhat.
Plus technically she's still a child and didn't even realize she was carrying a whole baby herself.
11:56 Crystal tells that story because Charlie made her feel old and unattractive. Many women struggle with self esteem issues as they age because they think they’re losing their beauty. So now, as she’s reflecting on her life, she wishes she stayed with Giuseppe, someone who truly loved her and not just her looks.
Most women mess up like this. Then once they start aging, have no career, two or three kids by two or three different losers, and the love handles pop up...all of a sudden they want to go back to the decent guy she screwed over 15 years ago.
Rejected.

Well, it looked like he was stabbing him in the lungs and you don't truly recover from that
And the guy had some sort of blood clotting issue; maybe that could have done something?
Allowing a stab wound to the lungs and other organs heal by themselves isn't exactly the same as shallow cut on the face. It's not just instantly healing, the body also goes through the whole damage of the wounds in seconds. If you don't take too much care of a shallow cut you'll be fine, but if you don't go to the hospital immediately after getting stabbed multiple times on the torso you probably won't make it.

M. Night, the driver as Charon, the ferryman across the river Styx...river of death.
ah sweet, always happy to see a new upload!
This movie never gets “OLD” for me. I keep re-watching, just to understand sympathize how they felt when trying to escape or observing the rapid changes in their children and themselves at the end
The first Shyamalan movie I saw was Unbreakable and I didn't know about his twist endings yet so the twist to that one actually kinda blew me away.
i really want to thank you for all your work and research into what movies your doing your videos on, i havent been afan of shamalam since he destyroyed the last air bender movie. but this movie has always interested me, no one showed a detailed enough review for me to understand the film. but yours was perfect!. didnt know what happened to some of the people on the beach, messed up to the girl with the broken bones that freaked the hell out of me. and the fact that the two kids actually made it back to the hotel, never knew that from the reviews, and i mean good for the other people for not spoiling the movie, but would have been nice to know those facts in the other channel stuff. so again great work my dude, this is why i keep coming back to your videos!!!!!!
I'm just glad that those responsible for the experiments were caught and held accountable.
The theatrical poster design is a direct reference to the graphic novel, Sandcastle, which inspired this film. It's from a moment in which a character tells a tale about "a strange old man who had half of everything: half a head, half a body, and half of his arms and legs."
Old (2021) marks the first time M. Night Shyamalan has filmed entirely outside Greater Philadelphia since his first film Praying with Anger (1992). However, Guy and Prisca mention that Philadelphia is where they live.
The film is an adaptation of a 2010 graphic novel by writer Pierre Oscar Lévy and artist Frederik Peeters called Sandcastle. When asked what inspired him to adapt the book to film, director M. Night Shyamalan explained: "The book gave me the opportunity to work through a lot of anxieties I had around death and aging, and things like my parents getting older."
Near the end, the notebook they find that contains a written possible theory and other victims' names is said to have belonged to a science fiction writer. This is a direct reference to the graphic novel wherein the main character that comes up with theories for their unusual situation is a science fiction writer.
Ooooh boy I’ve been waiting for this thx foundflix ❤️❤️❤️
This movie would be infinitely better if it was written by someone who actually understood how human being speak.
I truly prefer the movie to the graphic novel 😅 there's just so much more hope
This movie just made me feel so depressed… indeed you have to live in the moment.
Ayyyy!!! The guy behind the detective in the helicopter is my friend John!! His line unfortunatly got cut but fun to see him appear in this video! XD
Finally, I’ve been dying for you to do a video about this movie.
As a fan of the Man In The High Castle Amazon show, I can't help but see Charles as a Nazi so it makes a lot of sense that he hates the rapper.
I still remember him as John Murdoch in Dark City. Though the very first time I ever saw Rufus Sewell act was in the Eleventh Hour. That show creeped me out as a kid.
Based
Show was dope up until, well, you know when.
I was looking for this comment
Appreciate this, man! I'm sure I would have always wondered, and this summed it up real succintly.
I really liked the movie; it was very original and intriguing. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it before. I guess I wish that more of them survived; like they could have figured out something sooner. It was like they were almost all doomed to start with. Very creative tho! Good job M. Night 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
No they all had a chance for survival . Everyone who went to the beech had a phone that still had service there were people texting on the beach. They could had told anyone not on the beach to tell the authorities what was happening and how they were being kept in a place against their will
@@robertbartley2409 the phones worked??? I thought they didn’t. Plus no one could leave or they’d pass out so? The only way off was that passage where they swam through
@@deeshaminzies5655 that comment is proof that he hasn't actually seen the movie, a lot of people here are just on the Shyamalan hate train. The movie could've been better, sure, but so many comments here have obviously not watched it and just decided it's bad because of their hate for M Night.
@@dhruvtukadiya I wondered the same thing. Why the hate tho? His movies aren’t necessarily worse than anyone else’s; I imagine? I enjoy them
@@deeshaminzies5655 he made a bunch of terrible movies from 2009-2014 and the internet collectively decided that he would always be bad from then on. He's still not as great as he was, but some people now will go to any length necessary to say that he and his movies are all bad.
the graphic novel the movie is based on is supposed to feel more depressing and hopeless as time is something that just happens to everything. it's interesting to see it in a thriller perceptive and how the movie explained the beach and how a corporation would use it to make more money.

The problem is that the 73rd trial didn't KNOW they were going to die. Nobody did.
Not even the 3rd or 33rd trial knew.
Being asked wasn't an option because they weren't given a choice.
If given the choice, 99% of that whole trial would have said "no".
It's much like the squid game.
Everybody thought they were going for a chance to win money, if they lost, they would go home. They would hug their family and say "I tried my best".
They didn't know that there was no going home and that they would never see their family members again.
I want to see a movie where everyone figures out what is happening at a normal speed. I wonder how that could change the plot of some stories.
I do like that the kids survived in this ending, albeit them being 50+ years old and losing majority of their life. It's a sad thought, their whole childhood and early years stripped away
Their whole lives become dedicated to suing a single company, how can the company even compensate for that? I heard in kaiji manga a villain explaining to the protag in a gambling deathmatch, how 200 million yen are like the base cap out what someone can ever achieve monetary wise in their lifetime.
I appreciate M. Night putting out this genre. My fav
As an x men fan and also horror movie fan I wondered what would happen if wolverine aka Logan aka James howlett and deadpool aka wade Wilson went into the beach in this film? Seeing as they cannot age and would immediately heal from any mental or physical damage the beach would cause would the beach explode? Would the affects not happen or would the beach simply just be normal for them?
Most likely it would be just a normal beach to them they are really powerful
If anything it'd probably just buff the hell out of their healing factor
YESSSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. Funny how I look forward to foundflix review than I do the film itself
What a crazy story. I think m night did a pretty good job with this one. I'm glad there was resolution at the end instead of keeping it ambiguous like the graphic novel
It is so messed up that the company knowingly let children go to that beach. They weren’t sick and so what data are they actually gathering from them? (Genuinely curious if anyone has any theories or if I missed something?)
I honestly just enjoy horror movies through your videos
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. The time has finally come.
Can you do the ending explained for False Positive (2021)?
The director twists in his movies are always hit or miss .... but I do appreciate the different types of movies he comes out with
I don't know why a man who made his name on bittersweet endings and balanced the tone so perfectly in the Sixth Sense is so afraid or hesitant to do it now. Glass was all downside and maybe he felt burnt and was okay we'll go all upside here but the story it was based on where it ended with the two kids making the sandcastles on the beach fit so perfectly with the theme. He could've ended it there and then added in a shorter epilogue the twist about Big Pharma. Cut himself out (seriously why does he keep doing that?) and the whole kid subplot and made the people there a more three dimensional mix of people including some who really did believe it was worth the price and were not going to stop.
This channel brings me true happiness❤️ I will wait for when I’m having a bad day and then watch all the new videos
You're definitely weird.
Now that you pointed it out, I 100% agree this would make a great stage play
This video made my night. Thank you for being an amazing creator and person
