      I always thought that they were like demons I guess. And that he actually tried to save her life going past what a normal person would do so they let him leave. I can't say I would try all that on someone I hit in the middle of the night. It felt like a judgment of his character like he was deemed worthy or something willing to go the extra mile for another person no pun intended

    • @Fightingforthelost
      @Fightingforthelost 3 роки тому +473

      @@LiquidGirlfriendFreeBoy They started judging him from the moment he hit her in the road. Instead of leaving and pretending it never happened, he called for help, he picked her up and put her in the car. He drove to a hospital. When he couldn't find anyone to help, he did his best to help her on his own. Dude was the best person in the movie. He did something wrong (hitting her), but after that, he did everything he did to save her. Everyone else was either weighed down by guilt (the girl didn't have a direct hand in the death of her friend), pride (dude who tried to "save" his sister), or rage (the guys who killed the family). We don't know what caused the dad of the family to kill the one guy's daughter. I don't think that the mother was "innocent", because she seemed AWARE of what it was about before she was killed. The only real innocent in the entire thing was the daughter at the end, who died because rather than escaping, she tried to help her family.

      He stayed and faced his problems instead of running and takes responsibility and tried his best to save her. It's weird to see a positive outcome in a horror anthology, but I was glad he got to live. Shame she had to go out in such a horrific way lol

      @@christopherbennett5858 that’s exactly what I was thinking. I’m not sure he did anything but be a pawn in their game to kill the girl- hence why they laughed when she finally died. Because he didn’t do anything (that we know of) prior to entering the town, they had nothing to truly hold him there other than use him for a bit of fun and then send him on his way.

  • @bobbob2932

    The "judgment" theme kind of falls when you compare the respective crimes and the punishments of the different characters. Seems to be much more about punishing those who feel guilty, rather than necessarily punishing wrongdoers. Leaving a friend alone (which is not equivalent to murder) gets punished with a horrific death sentence, but reckless vehicular manslaughter is (relatively) okay, meaning Sadie is doomed for failing to protect her friend (meanwhile her innocent? friends get dragged into it become demons), while the guy who kills her gets to leave? And then the woman who murdered her parents for fun gets to become a demon, while the guys who murder another family in revenge are killed/trapped. As is the teen who tries to stop her parents killers. Doesn't seem so much about "punishing sin" or "atoning for wrongdoings" as just demons being demons with a whack moral system.

    • @The_Distortionist_Waits
      @The_Distortionist_Waits 3 роки тому +251

      Maybe the demons are kind of like humans, morals and views and different for each one, if one finds a human guilty, they punish them, it is not dependent on the severity of the sin, maybe it's just whether or not the demons you encounter find you guilty

    • @thematthew4324
      @thematthew4324 3 роки тому +266

      i think the reason he got to leave was because he tried everything he could to save her
      leaving your female friend alone during a night out on the town is pretty damn negligent, it's at least about as or more negligent than looking at your phone while driving in the middle of no where, and technically the demons are sort of to blame for putting her in his way

Frodo says to gandalf “I wish the ring had never come to me, I wish none of this had happened” to which gandalf replied “so do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide, all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you. There are many forces at work in this world frodo besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the ring which means you were also meant to have it, and that is an encouraging thought” .

      @Joseph Douek I don’t know - even Lucas was guilty of negligent driving - though accident it may be and he was allowed to leave with no punishment. Danny had purely altruistic motives. He even said when he first entered the bar that he didn’t want to hurt anyone, he just wanted his sister back. He also tried to absolve his sister of her guilt by telling her that their parents death wasn’t her fault (though it apparently was). His only “crime” was not following “the rules”. The two guys at the start were condemned from the get go by murdering innocents. The rules of this purgatory just seem very inconsistent. Or more likely - lackadaisical script writing.

    • @alvaroignacioriquelmezamud7417
      @alvaroignacioriquelmezamud7417 3 роки тому +65

      I don't think the punishment theory holds that much weight across the entirety of the movie. The reapers seem to be their own entities while the people from the highway seem to be of a more demonic variety. They are just pricks inflicting misery. The reason Lucas got to flee was because he was a cleanup crew. The diference with him from everyone across the movie is that he paid a service to the demons, He entered a dark bargain where he silenced the one girl that ran away, even unknowingly. Playing to the theme of fantasy where Demons will contract mortals to do their bidings.
      In all the histories fighting your demons isn't the solution, the demons are stronger than men.
      Lucas was offered a dark bargain, Do the demons bidding and the reward was an out, he didn't get to walk because he complied, he got away by the wims of the demons.

The "You told me" line was probably something like "You told me she was an orphan". @@arturozapata6675 Yup, I was thinking the same same thing. I've seen Southbound quite a few times and I was never sure about that one. Daryl didn't seem like a pedo murderer or burglar (though bullet holes in the door hint at some kind of shootout), so I too think the irony is Mitch in his purgatory kills his daughter too. Now, the only thing I'm not 100% percent sure is that since the lala-land doesn't exactly depict reality (similarly to Lost Highway, in fact sharing similar themes and even visuals), it might not have happened like this in real life.

Thus, he's able to move beyond purgatory to either heaven or just carry on with his life. the narrative concept is deeply reminiscent of El Incidente, but with world changes and a message that's different enough to appreciate it separately. Good coverage!

    I remember finding the vhs series one night when I couldn’t find anything else on. I was blown away by vhs 1. Part 2 was alright, but the shock of one was awesome.

    See a lot of posts here about you not putting ads on your vids and I've definitely noticed that myself. Your an amazing UA-camr that goes into extensive research and detail with every video you release, I hope this is not because you feel you love this job and your passion for it is too strong so if you were to make money from something you generally enjoy doing that it would somehow be either immoral or wrong in any way. Even if your passion for making these vids is the gratification, It doesn't change you provide so many people with enjoyment and escapes from their lives with your in-depth breakdowns and opinions of all the movies you review, You more than deserve to have your life enriched in the same way you enrich 2.07M subs worth of people lives (at the time of writing this comment).
    I hope this isn't true and you feel you deserve the happiness that you give so many people and I Can personally guarantee you that your content is of such a high standard that people would love watching you with adverts, Regardless man keep doing what you're doing I love your vids and they are an amazing part of my day much love my dude

    I too have a soft spot for horror anthologies; and Southbound had me thinking about what was going on.
    I kinda figured the town was somekind of Hell, where one had to relieve all their past sins; but FoundFlix's explaination makes alot more sense. 🤔🤔

    Theory:Alex called Sadie to pick her up from the club but Sadie was “busy “ and Alex had to get herself home and as she was intoxicated, she didn’t drive home and elected to walk home when Sadie didn’t show up and she was hit by a car and killed and everyone blaming Sadie is just sadie’s inner guilt eating her up

    And yes, VHS 3 sucked.

    why is no one talking about that dude who went looking for his sister for 13 years, just to find her as a demon, and for her to abandon him to a horrific death just like that, that genuinely pissed me off.

    You know what? They tried to be reasonably accurate with the medical terminology and equipment, and I really appreciate that.
    I know some people say, "duh, who cares?"
    36 million medical workers and professionals in the USA alone, most watch movies. It drives us nuts.
    ....don't know why they used 02 tubing as an ET tube though.

      As someone who is an artist and knows how strapped for cash some movie budgets and projects can be, it’s either that they didn’t have access to it, or that they couldn’t afford it.
      Either that, or the producers felt that that little detail wasn’t that important to the scene
      In art, you pick your battles

    I'm not convinced Lucas is actually let go. Seems more like they reset him so he could repeat a loop of accidentally murdering someone and then running away from the consequences again. While you can say he tried everything in his power, he still ultimately ran away and never wants anyone to know it happened. That's the same as the girl he hit's 'sin' - and she arguably had less culpability in her friend's death as just leaving someone alone at a party isn't manslaughter while running over a person is.
