The "judgment" theme kind of falls when you compare the respective crimes and the punishments of the different characters. Seems to be much more about punishing those who feel guilty, rather than necessarily punishing wrongdoers. Leaving a friend alone (which is not equivalent to murder) gets punished with a horrific death sentence, but reckless vehicular manslaughter is (relatively) okay, meaning Sadie is doomed for failing to protect her friend (meanwhile her innocent? friends get dragged into it become demons), while the guy who kills her gets to leave? And then the woman who murdered her parents for fun gets to become a demon, while the guys who murder another family in revenge are killed/trapped. In this situation Frodo is in despair at how his whole life has changed from a peaceful like to one filled with danger which is clearly evident when sneaking through the mines of moria. Frodo says to gandalf “I wish the ring had never come to me, I wish none of this had happened” to which gandalf replied “so do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide, all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you. There are many forces at work in this world frodo besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the ring which means you were also meant to have it, and that is an encouraging thought” .

@Joseph Douek I don’t know - even Lucas was guilty of negligent driving - though accident it may be and he was allowed to leave with no punishment. Danny had purely altruistic motives. He even said when he first entered the bar that he didn’t want to hurt anyone, he just wanted his sister back. He also tried to absolve his sister of her guilt by telling her that their parents death wasn’t her fault (though it apparently was). His only “crime” was not following “the rules”. The two guys at the start were condemned from the get go by murdering innocents. The rules of this purgatory just seem very inconsistent. Or more likely - lackadaisical script writing.
I don't think the punishment theory holds that much weight across the entirety of the movie. The reapers seem to be their own entities while the people from the highway seem to be of a more demonic variety. They are just pricks inflicting misery. The reason Lucas got to flee was because he was a cleanup crew. The diference with him from everyone across the movie is that he paid a service to the demons, He entered a dark bargain where he silenced the one girl that ran away, even unknowingly. Playing to the theme of fantasy where Demons will contract mortals to do their bidings. In all the histories fighting your demons isn't the solution, the demons are stronger than men. Lucas was offered a dark bargain, Do the demons bidding and the reward was an out, he didn't get to walk because he complied, he got away by the wims of the demons.
@@danmyers2759 it's not lacksadaisical writing. it's different directors. david bruckner did the hospital segment and his stuff tends to be is a bit ppsychological/philosophical in nature.
Truly mean they needed an example and he didn't blow someone's arm off. The guy did hit the girl but it was through their active punishing the girl, absolutely assuming they didn't expect him to even try to save the girl's life, he most definitely thought he would just leave, on top of which he even admitted it to his friends and he most likely would admit it to his family and live with the guilt I don't know maybe he might end up in this town one day.

One moment from the VHS series that has always stuck with me: The dog cam and having to watch the dog fall out of the sky and hit the ground with a squeak, just to see it die :(
Here's a little something I heard a while back 'bout this movie: " Jem is really Catherine...(yes, the little girl in the picture) kidnapped by Daryl when she was little (probably with some knowledge from Cait: "You told me"...) The "You told me" line was probably something like "You told me she was an orphan". Since it's been so many years, Mitch and Jack think Catherine was killed and can't recognize her, and unknowingly end up killing her =Catherine(Jem).
Yeah that totally makes sense as it connects the looping scene of him chasing his daughter around the house but it could still just be symbolic rather than literally her
you also forgot to point out in the loop at the end the DJ says something slightly different as well as things he says throughout the film suggest their is a chance they'll one day escape, my guess is it's some sort of temporal punishment, where if things are done correctly, or well enough they can get out with their lives, like a horrifying lovecraftian groundhog day

Why did the two guys from the beginning of the film murdered the entire family home-invasion style in the first place? Was that a revenge for something father had done?
yeah, it seems to imply that the father murdered the big guy's daughter, hence they tracked him down to enact his revenge. but, killing the mother and the daughter was going too far.

@@arturozapata6675 Yup, I was thinking the same same thing. I've seen Southbound quite a few times and I was never sure about that one. Daryl didn't seem like a pedo murderer or burglar (though bullet holes in the door hint at some kind of shootout), so I too think the irony is Mitch in his purgatory kills his daughter too. Now, the only thing I'm not 100% percent sure is that since the lala-land doesn't exactly depict reality (similarly to Lost Highway, in fact sharing similar themes and even visuals), it might not have happened like this in real life.
Fell in love with this movie. Love horror anthologies and even though its C.G. wasn't the most polished in the world, it accomplished a lot of what it was trying to do.
Caught Southbound a while back, this is a nice reminder of how good a horror anthology this film is. Great review as ever, and I'm pretty stoked to see VHS 4!
Might be off but it felt like innocent people who died in that place get turned into reapers while bad people who come to this place either get to suffer for their sins or, if they are really bad, get on the whole demon bizz. Not sure if it means that they become demons themselves.
Oh so that's the meaning of the movie, to confront and admit your sins.So only then you can leave the "Highway" dimension, so this "Highway" is another form of purgatory or a trail place?
It's also a representative of hell in a way, must pay for your sins, but if you don't feel guilt, like that woman who killed her family, she joins the "demons" it's sort of join them or fight them moral dilemma. The movie does really well at exploring how some crime can be justified and forgiven while others cannot. It all depends on situation- at least that's my interpretation of it
@@Parker-wn2pt Ok definitely but it's more of purgatory cuz people went through a redemption phase. In hell you just receive eternal punishment, no forgiveness there.
Hell would usually be reserved for people who are beyond redemption and most who would even be proud of their crimes, but this seems like a scenario of what if Hell just existed on earth and people could accidentally stumble upon it to receive the same treatment as dead souls who deserve it?
@@Jack_Woods No hell is absolutely not on earth but hell and earth are connected deeply because earth is the first planet the devil fell on when he was cast out. I think you missed something: the man in the car is stuck in a LOOP. He'll keep running over the girl toyed w by the demons on the phone until he accepts responsibility
I mean, maybe? But at the same time he did his best to fix what he did, admitted it, and just thought he didn't deserve being played with by the demons. I think it's more interesting that he's allowed to go as well, rather than everyone just being trapped
This is the first time I have stopped a Foundflix because I actually plan on watching this one. The lore and concept just seem so cool that I’ll power through the scary parts.
This is my kind of evil domain story, one that goes by the rules of redemption and perdition. Some stories set in similar locales choose to ignore or break the rules, just to try and force a bleak downer ending on you and give a ho-hum story a bitter punchline. But Southbound does it right, showing that there is a course for redemption, but that redemption itself is a shaky bridge you must walk carefully, or you'll fall. Ultimately it's your own choices that decide whether you find what you're hoping for.
There's no way the guy from the car accident was a doctor. Everything they told him to do, from a medical standpoint, was insanely wrong and could only hope to worsen or kill the patient, such was clearly the point. And when he went to intubate her, he grabbed and used a nasal cannula, meant to administer oxygen from the nose. Otherwise, excellent video!! I love your channel :)
Can I just say that I LOVE this channel, his passion for films is fantastic and I honestly don’t think that I have ever heard him say “Don’t forget to subscribe” or- “Smash that like button” Thank you for watching all these movies, good and bad 👏🏻
I think in Lucas' case, he must've been in a hit-and-run accident because he seems to be hesitanting more than once when he hit Sadie, but having been reminded of the guilt having experienced the situation decided to do all his best to help her and confront his guilt all those years ago. Thus, he's able to move beyond purgatory to either heaven or just carry on with his life. Although I'm confused about Danny's case, I don't see the reason of his tragedy, but reminds me of Orpheus and his attempt to rescue the soul of his wife from the underworld.
These redemption demon movies make me so confused, why would they care if you grow as a person? Their whole purpose is that they want you to sin and stuff
thats kind of the point of hell and shit. they keep replaying your biggest sins, so maybe in the movie these demons are kind of like giving people redemption before they just die and go to hell
Depends on version and interpretations. Some exist as temptors, some are more just angel-like figures taking on the dirty work if doling out punishment for example. Many different types and purposes for demons
I thought the reapers themselves should’ve been shown in the movie more! They were cool and different but creepy. They remind me of a broken umbrella! Lol 🤷🏻♀️

Lucas was my favorite character, I believe his "I'll do everything I can" and following through on it and not leaving her to die spared him from a damned fate. Also, his "I don't deserve this" was genuine. Which I'd why the Demons asked him to elaborate and they liked his answer.

I'm not convinced Lucas is actually let go. Seems more like they reset him so he could repeat a loop of accidentally murdering someone and then running away from the consequences again. While you can say he tried everything in his power, he still ultimately ran away and never wants anyone to know it happened. That's the same as the girl he hit's 'sin' - and she arguably had less culpability in her friend's death as just leaving someone alone at a party isn't manslaughter while running over a person is.

Another day to watch a movie featuring FoundFlix The *Goat*
In this situation Frodo is in despair at how his whole life has changed from a peaceful like to one filled with danger which is clearly evident when sneaking through the mines of moria. Frodo says to gandalf “I wish the ring had never come to me, I wish none of this had happened” to which gandalf replied “so do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide, all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you. There are many forces at work in this world frodo besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the ring which means you were also meant to have it, and that is an encouraging thought” .

The Goat. Is this a movie or short? I cannot seem to locate it.
This is kinda seeming a little silent hill to me. The guy who accidentally ran over the girl gets tricked into panicing and killing her by the weird voices on the phone.
Yeah, at least the voice is fair and lets him go free. Unlike the poor man who just wanted to help his sister.
He's not free, he ends his part with the same shirt and car as he had when he started. He's just being tricked to repeat the loop over again.

Why was Danny dragged off by the naked dudes? His only “sin” was wanting to save his sister.
yeah I think they were doing the "He knows too much thing" but then they also let Lucas the doctor go?

Why did the two guys from the beginning of the film murdered the entire family home-invasion style in the first place? Was that a revenge for something father had done?
It sounded like the father murdered the daughter of one of the two guys

@@arturozapata6675 Yup, I was thinking the same same thing. I've seen Southbound quite a few times and I was never sure about that one. Daryl didn't seem like a pedo murderer or burglar (though bullet holes in the door hint at some kind of shootout), so I too think the irony is Mitch in his purgatory kills his daughter too. Now, the only thing I'm not 100% percent sure is that since the lala-land doesn't exactly depict reality (similarly to Lost Highway, in fact sharing similar themes and even visuals), it might not have happened like this in real life.

As is the teen who tries to stop her parents killers. Doesn't seem so much about "punishing sin" or "atoning for wrongdoings" as just demons being demons with a whack moral system.

I'm so glad you covered Southbound! It's an underrated little gem in my opinion.

Thank you for watching all these movies, good and bad 👏🏻
I think in Lucas' case, he must've been in a hit-and-run accident because he seems to be hesitanting more than once when he hit Sadie, but having been reminded of the guilt having experienced the situation decided to do all his best to help her and confront his guilt all those years ago. Thus, he's able to move beyond purgatory to either heaven or just carry on with his life. Although I'm confused about Danny's case, I don't see the reason of his tragedy, but reminds me of Orpheus and his attempt to rescue the soul of his wife from the underworld.
Orpheus broke his promise and Danny didn’t accept his sister sin’s thus dragging him down with her
Danny’s gave me a strong “you can’t help those who don’t seek it, trying to do so will only cause you harm” message

thats kind of the point of hell and shit. they keep replaying your biggest sins, so maybe in the movie these demons are kind of like giving people redemption before they just die and go to hell

Lucas was my favorite character, I believe his "I'll do everything I can" and following through on it and not leaving her to die spared him from a damned fate. Also, his "I don't deserve this" was genuine. Which I'd why the Demons asked him to elaborate and they liked his answer.

Usually I don't like movie reviews because I think they are boring and spoil the movie. But you and DeadMeat James are the only ones who can have me hooked and entertained no matter the length XD
This movie was filmed in my town! The Trap scene was filmed right across from my house :-)
Finally, I always thought this was just interlocking stories but had a theory there was something more to all this.
One anthology film that I watched recently and loved was The Mortuary Collection. Very odd but very cool at the same time! Definitely would recommend checking it out.
Thank you Foundflix for doing Southbound!!! I really enjoyed this film, and so glad to hear you break it down!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! #YouAreAwesome
This is a massively underrated movie with how the anthologies were nicely weaved in together
I've watched every episode of Ending Explained, and I was today years old when i realized that your shelves are all in alphabetical order. Except for The Exorcist. I can feel my brain beginning to spasm.
South bound is a movie I just randomly found one day and now it’s one of my favorite movies
The guy with the earphones wasn't a doctor at all but the operator and the "surgeon" on the phone just wanted that girl dead through him
You need to put out more endings explained! Your reviews are so good to listen to because I'm too chicken to watch these movies. And they help me fall asleep, in a good way!
I never would've known about this movie. Looks great
Omg I loved this so much when I saw it on Netflix years ago and I wondered why nobody talked about it back then :( The hospital part effed me up. What a great guy trying to help that girl, only to be toyed with by the "EMT" and "Doctor".
Just what I needed.... a new ending explained! 🙌🏽👏🏼✨✨
One of my absolute favorite horror movies. I didn't expect much from it but it delivered so hard.
