    Can Shannon Miller please just do all gymnastics commentating? She's wonderful!

      While I agree that Nastia’s routine was a beautiful watch, I have to disagree with that as a favorite bc I absolutely love Shawn Johnson’s 2008 beam routine. Quite possibly my favorite. I also adore Dominique Mocheanu’s 1996 beam & floor. She was such a talented gymnast completely exploited by her family & the Karolyi’s. It would have been great to see her with a coach that worked her body less to where she’d have to go into early retirement.
      Idk. I just enjoyed Shawn & Dominque’s gymnastics way more than Nastia’s. Not that hers wasn’t absolutely *gorgeous* with the lines.
      Those are just my American favorites. Aly Raisman is amazing, but her 2016 routine is 🤌🏼 She is such a powerhouse.

    i loved this US team. they were so young. an absolute joy to watch those "kids" win. i guess their joy seemed more pure bc that was kind of the beginning of their dominance. watching them since, at worlds and in rio, gold is the expectation. they know they are leaving with a gold in team. Their naivety was way more enjoyable to watch here.

      Idk if that's true. Regardless of US being dominant, anything can happen to lose them the medals at anytime. But yes, I get what you mean, this Olympics was an incredible win since it had been since 1996 since US won it.

      @@autumnbriggs1035 Tbf Simone had been dominating competitions before that so it make sense that they'd mainly be watching her, plus she had a lot of Brazilian fans too. All eyes were on Aly as well and no matter how many times I watch it, I never get tired of her floor routine. London was definitely more nostalgic for me, especially since a lot of people underestimated Aly and Gabby and thought that Jordan would dominate (and she was amazing still) and McKayla's vault will always be legendary. I love Rio too though since Aly and Simone's friendship was the cutest, plus it was the last time we got to see either of them really enjoy the floor.

Gymnasts in general are extremely vulnerable which is why that man got away with what he was doing for so long. I feel bad for the Chinese team going from a gold team medal to no medal at all but they just weren’t strong enough. In 2008 they had someone to carry them in those areas they were weak but now they don’t. It showed how much Cheng Fei really held up the team in Beijing

    • @Allhoney33
      @Allhoney33 5 років тому +7

      They were all mostly underage when they won that Gold. (Same thing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, which disqualified their bronze medal).Prepubescent girls have an advantage over ones who've hit puberty. Look at how Nadia was when she was 13/14 years old vs 17/18 years old. That's why China cheats. But cheating catches up with you. Now that the Chinese gymnasts are the appropriate ages and gymnastics is more power centered, they can't deliver! They should have used all that energy to evolve with the changes in gymnastics vs cheating.

    • @kristinc1349
      @kristinc1349 4 роки тому +3

      I think Cheng Fei was so over scored in Beijing. Not to mention the fact that the Americans couldn’t catch a break by the end and were making major mistakes everywhere.
      Plus, the Chinese gymnasts were so young. There is such a difference and advantage to using young gymnasts.
      Their injury rate is much lower and they are a lot less cautious with their routines.
      Gymnasts like Victoria Komova, Rebecca Bross, and Katelyn Ohashi were all incredible as juniors but with age and injury they lost talent.
      Yes, many gymnasts get better with age but their is a huge advantage to using young gymnasts.

But make no mistake it is very hard. It's not just these few moments we see these girls compete. If you were a competitive gymnasts you know the 6 hour days 5 days a week. Ice baths and compmetr torture we our bodies through. Nothing easy about it. And all 4 apparatus is like a different sport in themselves. May I ask what level you are/were

    It’s true GB did not win a medal. But around the world people saw what a great nation they were in the way they treated all the athletes. Their friendliness and sportsmanship shown like a light when they cheered for the excellence they saw in the hard won performances from youth representing the best from each country. I kept hoping GB would win a medal. Being the host country calls for a lot from a nation. It isn’t just their sports teams that have to keep smiling in the face of insurmountable odds. Everyone hopes for the best. When the dust settles you know the best won in that moment. The future always gives you another chance to try.

      They honestly came back in Rio as well. They were considered a possible contender for bronze, expected to battle with Great Britain and others for the medal… and won silver because they stayed steady and focused while others had problems.

  • @ruthmiller9346
    @ruthmiller9346 6 років тому +122

    I understand it’s hard to lose a medal you thought you could get but I wish Russia would just be a little more happy that they got a medal. They had a lot of issues falls stumbles wobbles and they’re lucky to have a medal in the first place specially a silver one. Teams like Canada and Great Britain were happy just to compete and imagine how much they would love a medal. I think the team was just being a little selfish when they should be happy they got a medal.

    • @silverleopardcat
      @silverleopardcat 5 років тому +33

      Yes, so imagine how well they could have done if they hadn't had all those falls. The "team" wasn't upset, the athletes were upset because all of them had made very costly mistakes--Grishina and Afanaseva had major falls, Komova got a huge deduction for taking huge steps out of bounds on her beam dismount, and Mustafina couldn't stick her floor landings. Each one had let her team down. It's a lot easier to take a loss when it comes down to tenths; when you know you might have won if you hadn't made that giant mistake it really stings. Britain and Canada would definitely love a medal, but the teams simply aren't at the level of the US and Russia. They came into the team final and executed clean routines, with consistently lower scores, but they were proud to bring their countries into the spotlight.
      Every athlete/team goes into the Olympics with different expectations. Canada has never made a team final; Britain had the entire country watching them. The goal was making the team final and performing as well as they possibly could. Russia, on the other hand, has fallen since the Soviet days, not even medalling in 2008. 2012 was supposed to be a big year, with Komova as the runner-up in 2011, Aliya with her surprising recovery from an ACL tear, Afanasyeva as the returning veteran, _and_ Paseka as a specialist. Grishina was their up-and-coming.
      So yeah, it's not quite enough to say they should be "happy" to medal, when all of them made significant mistakes and completely gave away the gold. I suppose they should be happy to medal when they made so many mistakes, but if they were happy and smiling after falling all over the place you'd probably say they were entitled, knowing they'd still medal despite the deductions.

      @@silverleopardcat it's sad that those tenths that brought them the silver turned to what? 7 or 8 FULL POINTS by the time Rio came around. And Romania not even qualifying a team? Just heartbreaking. I'm American so of course I am so proud of these girls...but I've also been around a long time and this sport is not the same without that head-to-head competition and excitement. Rio has to be THE most boring Olympics I've ever seen. The only surprise was beam finals. I want Russia to maintain their beautiful balletic style but increase their difficulty, work on conditioning and consistency (conditioning definitely needs attention). And Romania? Sigh... denisa is awesome! And I know they have some juniors moving up...crossing my fingers they are able not only qualify a whole team, but keep up with USA, RUSSIA, CHINA and now Brazil, Japan, the UK and Canada are working their up there as well.

    For everyone I’ve seen commenting in the All Around about Gabby Douglas not deserving to go I’m the all around over Jordyn Wieber, I wonder if they missed the fact that Gabby scored higher than her not just on that one day in qualification, but also in the Team final! Every one of the scores Gabby put up were higher than Jordyn Wiebers, especially on bars! Not only that, but Gabby also beat Jordyn in the All Around at Olympic trials, securing the only guaranteed berth to the Olympics. Jordyn may have been able to beat Aly in the All Around if she hit all four events (but maybe not with Ally’s FX score and the same vault, and same weakness on bars) but I still think Gabby would have beat her with all four routines hit. She had the better Amanar, equal to better floor and better beam when she hit her beam routines, because Jordyn wasn’t credited Internationally for her beam connections the way she was domestically, and Gabby had that Chow punch on beam when she hit with great positions and acrobatic skills, and Jordyn could not compete with Gabby at all on bars. To be fair, Jordyn didn’t compete beam in the Team final, so I could only go off of qualifications, but Gabby not only made it into the All Around fair and square, she also put out higher scores on everything in the Team final, and she then proved herself again in the all around with four quality events (though if Komova had controlled her vault better and prevented the extra steps off the podium down to just the first step to the side, and two less balance checks on beam, she would have won gold over Gabby-you have to be better on the day of) and her gold medal was proof enough that she belonged in there competing with the world’s best, and Aly Raisman’s qualification performance and floor FX earned her spot fairly as well. Every one of those girls (the Russian ladies included) should be incredibly proud of what they accomplished though, because an Olympic medal of any color around their necks is nothing short of incredible and puts them in a very prestigious group of athletes and their names forever cemented in gymnastics and Olympic history! The fact that Russia was so good that even with errors in Komova’s beam dismount and vault landing, and Musty and Grishina’s floor errors, that they still won silver, is a testament to just how good they are! London Olympic gymnastics was a bloodbath that made it exciting to watch!

The kids on the team now grew up with freedoms and no memories of the past and their parents spent a lot of time with freedoms too, so the old dominance of the coaches and parents and fear of the government are a long distance memory. Now the kids while training are spending time on their phones and goofing off. Before they all had to live together away from their parents and no outside influence. Different times.
