I was always taught that the head should be based from a circle and yea it technically does since the skull is round but using boxes instead makes drawing heads in perspective so much easier! It also saves time of remembering stuff that would only happen in certain angles like the cheek being more pronounced in others while some not. I’ve been drawing the head for 3 years now but still inconsistent at it. This would help a heck ton!
Same, circles just haven't worked for me. It gotten to the point I stop using it and just wing it because I see no improvement in consistency. I will try boxes now
George B. Bridgeman: Constructive Anatomy. He's the guy who taught the box method. It's a good book to own and reference, but I think there are better ways to learn it as it's mostly illustrations and some people find it hard to translate directly from the book to practice.
Not an artist myself but I've seen lots of videos about making drawings, some people use circles some use squares, some use it on smaller parts some use it on a whole body
It all makes sense now. The reason why I gave up art was because I gave up on improvement because the whole reason I started drawing in the first place was to get better. And I had no motivation because I thought that no matter how hard I tried, I wouldn’t be good enough and that made me wonder what the point of it was. What I’m saying is that I think I can get better and I feel motivated to do what makes me happy again.
Starting to take up drawing as a challenge this summer. Super motivating to see how much you improve in a few months over your first few examples of past art!
I am also a beginner artist, been going at it for two and a half years now Even though I don't consider myself good, it's been a fulfilling journey I know it may sometimes look like an insurmountable challenge, but don't give up! Realize that the entire process of becoming great is based on baby steps, and little by little we'll reach new heights that were not possible before! So keep striving, and do not forget to enjoy your baby steps! At the end of the universe, I hope to see your star near mine!
Good luck ! Usually the first 2 months in any discipline you'll get extremly noticeble improvements. beyond that, it becomes slower and slower to notice, the progression curve gets less visible than before BUT, progression will be there as long as you try new stuff. so keep it up
same. the first few you see quick improvement especially if you know where your flaws are and how to overcome them the rest then comes with practice. keep drawing everyone :]
As someone who gave up on drawing a few years ago due to a few reasons, I find your video series on how to draw amazing. When I remember back when I was actively trying to get better there weren't any good artists that would explain how they did things, so you going out of your way and explain how you do things is amazing to watch. Who knows, maybe I'll start drawing again because of these videos.
Your art improvement from 2018 to now is insane! I always drew from intuition, so my skills mostly improved slowly through the years. Seeing such progress in such short amount of time is crazy! Really inspires me to apply myself to nurture my skills instead of just leaving them at whatever level they came naturally. Se how far they can go with real practice. Will be checking more of your tutorial and art, awesome stuff man.
I can relate to that feeling of frustration, I didn't understand what I was doing wrong with the head and how to fix it, thanks to you I might be able to overcome this problem finally. Although I have to say your art looks really good even before fixing these mistakes.
Yeah that box tip looks great, that looks useful for knowing where to place features on my character face. It should help me with my consistency problems.
This video came right on time! Been trying to up my skills for the last couple of months and I spent the whole weekend struggling with a new drawing because I just can't get the face consistent! Thanks so much for your tips!
I am no where near being an actual artist. However, I've been learning how to rig in live 2d, and the hardest thing I've encountered so far is making the face look right. Whenever I implement the XY movement of the face, it just doesn't look right. And this tutorial is actually helping me and giving me ideas on how I should implement these features! Especially the box method!
ive watched quite a few other art videos, none of them are as detailed as yours, nor did they give any easy to use reference. the fact that you also give levels for us to see which one we want to learn is too useful, keep it up :)
I haven't even started to learn how to draw, but already, your video's give amazing tips to look out for, and you explain it so well that I as a non-artist understand it. I just can't wait to start learning whenever I see a video of yours!
I wish I could just talk with you and say out loud "I love your work, I love your drawings, your tutorials are amazing and I am learning so much, Thank you, thank you for keep doing all of this, it's outstanding, amazing"
I just want to say I love your videos Oriday! I struggled to get faces and perspective right for a while now and many tutorial and guides always uses the circle method which has never worked for me. The face was always off and it affected the rest of the drawing. Seeing the examples and the way you explained the tips was helpful! I been practicing the box method and I can see an improvement. Thank you!
I started learning how to draw a long time ago, and just came back to relearn today... I have never seen the box method until now, and my mind is blown. Thanks! Edit: My early art wasn't good, and I don't ever think I still have the old work stored anywhere.
Please make a rendering tutorial on both the skin and hair. It would really help others who are struggling with these parts like I do when making Japanese Anime artstyle.
you might not read this and honestly it doesn't matter, all that matters is me wanting to thank you bro your videos are what i have been searching for the past 2 years of drawing, i fucking love you bro thanks alot for making these videos
This is so helpful, I’m currently diving deep in how to draw the head and I’m glad that I think my thought process was very similar to you. I’m gonna do the practice that you mentioned, thank you so much!
was scrolling looking for a good video to listen to while doing school and saw this, I almost went past it but then decided to watch. can't believe I almost missed such an amazing and helpful video, thanks for making it!
I been struggling with the head since 2020 and i couldn't find a tutorial that worked for me, with the little I've practiced I already see improvement, so tysm!

23 year old artist here who is also stuck in begginer’s hell. Seeking for a way to become profesional without having to go to an art college (because there aren’t any where I live) I’ll be doing the same thing as you. Retiring to sketches and practices before going back to main art. For the next two months at least.
You explain it quick easy enough to understand but advanced and very specific I’m listening and every video I listen I always find so many mistakes I do and I went from horrible drawing to okayish doodles and I’m still okayish I’m still dedicated to learn and practice my art thanks
ok, first of all, I would like to say that you r actually insane at drawing! Next, I would like to ask how did you learn how to draw because right now my goal is to draw illustrations and fan art as a hobby but I don't really know how to/where to get started. Can you please recommend any programs/courses/exercises that you find helpful during your early stages? Also, I am sorry because I am pretty sure you get this question a lot.
One of the only videos on youtube to give any real direction on how to place eyes on different angles using this box method. Pretty much everyone else will just go "lol just place it like here". If I knew the logic behind that decision, why would I be looking up guides on how to do it?
Those first two especially seem really useful to me. I'm pretty much a novice for drawing and the human form is the hardest thing to draw. Look forward to try the methods out!
I have to appreciate you since I've always used the circle method since yk our head isn't actually a box but the box method I'm gonna use for a while a practice and see how it goes for me since this seems easier and better
This video made me realise how many things i cant do: break things down to basic shapes, draw humans, draw without reference, draw perspective, understand perspective, understand 3d, draw 3d, draw anatomy, draw proportions, and possibly many more
holy cow oridays, i remembered you during kakage's sensei morning croquis back in 2020, every morning i would participate in his croquis n saw you translating for kakage sensei 😂 you've come really far now wow, すげぇ上達しましたね!
Thank you for practicing can help me draw head accuracy. This help me a lot. I try to find the way to practice. Your tips really helpful. Thank you so much.
I only started learning to draw a few days ago and been focused on poses but man my faces SUCK lol. This looks like exactly what ive been looking for! Thank you for all the work you put into this. Its so easy to understand
Omg this helped me so much. I started drawing on a whim and seeing everyone drawing circle for the head make me suffer so much since i, well, can't draw it properly.
i remember when i was starting to draw like anime stuff and the first ever me doing that just by drawing faces. it really does took a long journey until im really used to it, but now im just learning how to draw anatomy, such a long and fun process
ok after watching this, I am now a believer of the thumbnail. It's legit my current problem but then after 8 tries using the box method, I just made a masterpiece
OMG subscribed for that Anatomy360 alone! I was wondering how on earth do people learn this stuff as I struggle to understand how to draw as someone learning lol. I can do certain stuff but nothing special. I thought there must be a reference sheet or something somewhere. This is epic! Thank you :D
Could you do something on how to achieve thinner lines for your line-art? I'm trying really hard to achieve the style of other art similar to yours, but I just can not figure out how to get my lines to look that thin. There are times that I'd get up and just draw with a blank mind and went out of my comfort zone and it was actually very good but when you're too serious about it or a try hard, just relax :>, Btw thank you for the video i learned alot 😊
I want to get into art, but every time I see someone draw on an application on PC I get confused. For example at 3:35 are you drawing with your mouse? Or do you have like a drawing tablet connected to your PC? Any insight would be really helpful! I want to be able to eventually draw like you as well someday
Little late but he probably uses a drawing pad, I recommend get decent and understand what your drawing on paper then get a drawing tablet because good ones can be very expensive.
It's been 3 years since i started to do a digital art specially anime art and yet I'm still at the beginners level, i didn't know should i improve my art and i think this is the tutorial that can help me.
this was so helpful for me and all of your tutorials just keep helping my art improve but i still really struggle of feet i would love to see a tutorial on the anatomy of feet and how to draw shoes !
@oridays This is amazing Dude honestly it’s the most useful tutorial for face I’ve ever seen. I have just one question , I’ve seen in the video you mark the half of the box as a land mark for the eyes, but in other part’s you divide your box in 3 and use the 2/3 landmark for drawing the eyes… Is it correct to use the 1/2 land mark for reference of eyes… or the correct way is the 2/3 one? Thx again for this incredible tutorial
Thank you so much this helped motivate me so much! the idea of thinking of stuff in 3d and foreshortening was amazing definitely helped me! also anatomy... yaehh i should probably learn that tooo haha
What about box proportions? Longer? Skinnier? Wider? I keep getting characters that look like Senator Kelly in X-Men pushing his head through the prison bars 😓 I see it’s not a cube, but it’s also not a rectangular monolith. How do you determine how to draw the box??
Wow, that's some high quality content! I was aware of this method but didn't really use it, but the way you present it with many examples makes a lot of sense and now I'll definitely give it a second chance. Your improvement after the studies was outstanding. EDIT: I skimmed through your other videos, and this looks to me like a channel on the way to 100K subs 😄 Great work!
The problem for me here is drawing a box on different angles, the tricky part is the slight direction of the lines that sometimes I can't see clearly how it directs so the depth of the shape ends up incorrect.
for me it's definitely hands, i can draw hands as just hands without the body, but when i draw full body with the arm attaching the hands, it's just gets really confusing to make it looks natural, not necessarily realistic but doesn't looks off either
I do some 2d digital art from time to time using 3d underlays. And yes, while they’re useful, I do feel like I’m cheating using them and over reliant on them.
Man its honestly so hard to escape this beginner hell for real...I personally always tried to "invent" my own poses just from memory but its really not effective...you learn much more from references and other examples that everything slowly becomes more and more natural to draw...I of course haven't come anywhere close to a decent artist but I knew to "scold" my friend who said that he didn't want to take example from references because he felt "weak..." and "unoriginal" I cringed so hard when I heard that...
I was always taught that the head should be based from a circle and yea it technically does since the skull is round but using boxes instead makes drawing heads in perspective so much easier! It also saves time of remembering stuff that would only happen in certain angles like the cheek being more pronounced in others while some not. It's all about perspective, and the best way to learn perspective is drawing boxes.
Same, circles just haven't worked for me. It gotten to the point I stop using it and just wing it because I see no improvement in consistency. I will try boxes now
Same here because it was a no-no for my teacher. Instead I use boxes to draw hard surface objects.
George B. Bridgeman: Constructive Anatomy. He's the guy who taught the box method. It's a good book to own and reference, but I think there are better ways to learn it as it's mostly illustrations and some people find it hard to translate directly from the book to practice.

^^^^
@@hiddendrifts Exactly! thats how i want ai generated art to be like! to help your work! not to create it.

I can't draw 3d boxes
Me neither bro
Start with lines and squares in 2d
You could always do DrawABox, you’ll definitely not be able to say that after that haha (it’s completely free)
Then practice drawing 3d boxes from all angles

actually amazing tutorial, I really like when artists get into the math / geometry side of art rather than "just draw a circle and some lines"
I learned the box method from Chyan's coloso course and it was a serious game changer for me.

@oridays This is amazing Dude honestly it’s the most useful tutorial for face I’ve ever seen.
I have just one question , I’ve seen in the video you mark the half of the box as a land mark for the eyes, but in other part’s you divide your box in 3 and use the 2/3 landmark for drawing the eyes…
Is it correct to use the 1/2 land mark for reference of eyes… or the correct way is the 2/3 one?
Thx again for this incredible tutorial
It would have been really useful if you added a the image of your turn around explanation, looks really helpful
Yamada 💕
i struggle with head and face, i don't know what it is and don't know how fix it.
And now I'm here to find some solution.
"IT WAS A BOX" 🔥🔥
Thank you so much for this video! ♥ Helped me alot
How do you determine how to draw the box??
so can we get a tutorial on how to draw a box now
Wow, that's some high quality content!
Best tip of all videos I've seen
I do some 2d digital art from time to time using 3d underlays. And yes, while they’re useful, I do feel like I’m cheating using them and over reliant on them.
After my exams I'll try to learn to draw pretty well I keep getting inspired from art youtbers
do you have a tutorial on how to get the shape of the head right? if you do, I'm sorry but if you don't I would really like one! thank you!
Thanks for the tips!
Btw is there any particular way to draw the cubes for the first tip? If there is, can you please make a video on it?
