Man I love this game. At first I mostly only stuck with it because of how laughably bad I thought the story was (alongside the fact that this game's time travel mechanics are super cool) but then the last hour or so of the game somehow made everything come together in a way that was way more clever and brilliant than it had any right to be.

I remember playing Shadow of Memories at the age of 10, and beying completely flabbergasted by its graphics, themes, narrative and mechanics. The PS2 era was really a magical time.
To this day, I never managed to go back to it and see all the endings and the extras, but I still consider it one of the most unique and enthralling pieces of media I ever experienced.
Props to Junko Kawano and her team for creating this wonderful anomaly of a game, and to you for diving so deep into its story. I really enjoyed the whole analysis! :)

I rarely comment on videos, but thank you muse for covering such niche titles, especially games that are also very dear to me. Shadow of Destiny/Memories was an incredible experience back when I was a teenager, with its twists and turns, but struggled to share my love for the game with others.
Learning so much about its development history makes me appreciate it even more. I'm working on a comic at the moment with very similar themes, and I hope one day I can inspire others as much as games like this inspired me!

I didn’t love Shadow of Destiny, but I did develop a strange soft spot for it. It’s one of a very small handful of times that a GameStop employee made a spot on recommendation. I had played and adored Echo Night on PS1 and was looking for something similar. A very very niche “genre” and not many games I’d say fit. But Shadow of Destiny nails that feel.

This was a great video! I never knew just how much passion there was put into this game. Junko Kuwano is awesome.
On the topic of female auteurs in gaming who don't get nearly as much respect as they deserve, I'd recommend checking out the Another Code and Hotel Dusk series since they were both written and designed by Rika Suzuki who I honestly consider the best writer in gaming. Both series do an amazing job of offering up these incredibly mundane situations that are way more interesting and exciting than what you'd expect from a game that can literally be summarized as "A 30-something year old man badgers his neighbors in the apartment building he lives in," they're all just incredible games with incredible stories, incredible aesthetics, and incredible music. Also iirc I'm pretty sure she was one of the first pioneers of adventure games in Japan, writing and designing them around the time when Portopia Serial Murder Case was released/developed, though tbh I still haven't gotten around to checking out the games she made around that time, currently I've only played the amazing games she made at Cing.

I remain impressed at the ways they handled the time traveling. I don't want to say how because whenever you finally stream it I don't want to spoil that route but still it's being able to do them that I admire.
It's doesn't feel fully linear and your choices do matter.
Already said that that was my main disappointment with BioShock infinite in the one game where your choices should matter the most they don't. It's like the Mass effect dialog option going from yes, passive yes, no, and rude no it's "yes, passive yes, rude yes, joking yes."

It's such a classic, that it inspired me to write a "Noddy" fanfic in which Homunculus is the main villain. It has images and everything. Yes, I'm aware I should be worried about my mental health.
Its inspiration stems from the time manipulation and artificial life form aspects. They're important for an overarching story I'm slowly building towards to (slowly as in "MCU" slow, which, by the way, is a good thing).

(Inhales) I love this game ! Very creative, yet with a certain simplicity to it. I still can't bring myself to end the Homunculus's existance for a number of reasons.
I even made a fan ending mixing some of the endings that ends with Margaret and Hugo return to their time, Dana stays, Homunculus stays alive, Eike remembers his past, sending Dana away due to the shock of the moment, and then being ran over by a car, with his last thoughts being how he was a slave of everyone's fates, ensuring their happy ending... except his own.

I played "Shadow of Destany" and beat this game about a month after it was released here in the USA. Shadow of Destiny {PS2} {Beat it April 01 2001, game timeline begins April 08, 2001.} Endings E-, D-, C- B-, B+, A+, EX-, EX+. Back then I recorded all my videogame endings. It appeared on my VHS of "Video Game Endings Tape 5", ua-cam.com/video/eyqAqTruwjw/v-deo.html Most of the games before that were NES games, by the time this game came out I was still collecting all the N64 games. By this time, I beat about as many N64/64DD games as I had PS2. The story in "Shadow of Destany", reminded me of the 1991 Revival/Remake series "Dark Shadows" from 1991. It only lasted 12 episodes but had a vampire, a ghost child, a witch and time travel. The only continuation we ever got was the Comic book series Book's 1-3, with 9 issues total before the company 'Innovation Comics' went out of business. The story also resembles the 1993, Star Trek: The Next Generation, episode "Tapestry" from Season 6, Episode 15. In which Q brings Picard back to the past to prevent himself from being stabbed in the back. But he also changes time. Nearly a year earlier "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" was released which also featured a similar time travel way to prevent the end of the world. Time travel in "Zelda" games started in "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" 1991-1992.
