The "节哀" means that "Please control your sadness in order not to affect your health.", and the "顺变" means that "Please adapt yourself to your new living environment (i.e., to live without that person who passed away)".

I like your lessons because you are using English to teach English, not like other using Chinese their mother languages to teach English which doesn't make sense at all!!! Learning a language needs to put the learner in that language environment in order to learn. This is how immigrant children learn English in North America. You did a good job, Jackie!!!
