@@codetech5598 The point is singing whilst playing a driving eighth-note pattern all over the neck. Also check out "Silly Love Songs" from Wings. Paul plays and sings that as well.
Years of practice and muscle memory in live performances prepared all four Beatles for perfection in the studio. As Mike mentions they'd been covering the Chuck Berry song for a while with same note albeit in a different key. So he had that pattern down long before he tried to sing with it.
It's a shame that most people (including me) listening to early Beatles songs back in the day did so with crappy radios and cheapo turntables, thereby missing out on much of Paul's bass work. Thanks to Mike here for bringing it into full glory.
Wow! that was great. So nice to have some focus on Paul's bass work. That's a rich field to explore on it's own. Another favourite of mine is his marvellous bass line for "Nowhere Man". That's so melodic it almost seems like a song within a song. Thanks so much!
i was just listening to a live version of Nowhere Man today and remembering how they always said they were always nervous doing that live cause of the harmonies. not only were they nailing the vocals (of course), but Paul was playing the bass line you mentioned while singing the part and probably unable to hear himself doing either.... folks just don't understand how good as a band and individually those guys really were...
Awesome that you’re taking a lot at Paul’s bass playing on this song, it’s definitely one of his most iconic and fun lines to play and it still amazes me that he was able to sing while playing that fast. I’d love to see more lessons like this where you look at Paul’s bass parts in addition to what George and John are doing on guitar, great lesson as always Mike
Thank You Mike!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a bass player SO THRILLED to see you do one of Paul's bass lines. My FAVORITE. It was awesome when I first heard it at 8 yrs old and still excites me when I play it in my band. Love every one of your Beatle guitar lessons and LOVE the BACKSTORIES on all the lessons!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH ciao, gino
Mike, the world has been waiting for this moment to arise when a genius, you, to finally break down the music of those other 4 genius'. Astounding work,Mike!
As always Mike, great job. I've been playing this line since childhood, but thanks to people like yourself, you're paying it forward and educating the next generation on what innovative and influential musicians these guys were. Beatles Forever, my Friend 👍
That was really incredible Mike! Never realized how complex that bass part was until now. Imagine having to play that and sing at the same time? Just goes to show the musical genius of Paul McCartney! Thanks for all of these amazing videos & hope that you are doing well & staying safe over there! 👍👍🎸🎸👏👏
Practice, my friend. These guys were constantly playing, singing, and writing. Practice makes perfect, and practice takes patience. You'll get there, man.
The bassline is my favorite part of the song. Sometimes I queue up a bunch of bassline tutorial videos for this exact song in a playlist as background music while I do spreadsheet modeling in Excel. Thanks for sharing this. It's perfect.
Thank you, Mike! I love The Beatles and really enjoy your channel. I play a bit of guitar and so enjoy your lessons. But I'm primarily a bass player and can't tell you how pleased I am to see this. I hope you'll continue posting more bass lessons. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for this awesome lesson Mike! You're the absolute man and nobody teaches the Beatles like you do. Would love it if you did some more bass lessons in the future!

Please incorporate bass lessons in with your guitar lessons! Bass is never given a proper recognition when it comes to lessons. Thanks again for your time in presenting these to us!
Perfection as always, Mike! Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Retired to Spain and have a small studio settup. Problem is, age is catching up with me! Fingers don't always do what I tell 'em these days. Keep 'em coming please. Love your work.
Happy new year Mike 🎉 thank you for teaching we the people all the Beatles music 🎶 I've played guitar for 45 years but I never could have accomplished these songs without your help. keep on rocking .
Who knew that Paul varied the bass line so much in ISHST! I can't thank you enough for laying all that out so completely. What great ears you have, Mike. I don't play this song often enough to memorize the timing of all these variations, but I will definitely change up the bass line to approximate what Paul is doing. It's subtle but really makes the song jump. Even on the simplest songs, Paul created great interesting bass lines..
@@MPfrance glad you finally can come to it. I asked you once per email. Thank you so much for.this Mike. I must say your hearing is much better than mine for sure but a lot of times it can get quite tricky to distinguish each bass note in the mix of a Beatlessong, What do you do to distinguish the bass notes more clearly?
Super stuff Mike.😃 I'm subbing just for this song. 20 yrs. ago I learned this when my buddies made me the bass player. I wasn't, but owned a plywood jazz knockoff. My approach to learning bass theory was to copy the record note for note. There's a couple of nuances you showed that I'd missed.👍 One of my favorite songs to play. What a finger burning workout it was. Not being used to the larger neck size. Ended up using open A in the bridge to give my hand a rest. Soon after I picked up a more playable rig, which still graces my studio.
Hi Mike, I couldn't play two notes to save my life but I sure enjoy your "de-construction" of the tunes of my all time favourite band "The Beatles". Also love the little back stories to fill in some historical details. All the best for 2022. Keep it coming! Cheers.
Thank you for getting to the bass. I never had a Hofner, but a Klira TwinStar. I hope you run through all of the bass parts. It wasn't until I saw the bass part for I Want To Hold Your Hand that I saw where Paul double-noted a bit and that opened my eyes to a lot. The tone you have is really warm. Good.
Wow, thanks for the bass lesson (although after a few years my fingers can play the riffs up to speed but can't even think of singing along). While I was studying this song years ago I noticed that on the Sullivan show, on the usual first trip to A on the E string 5th fret, he simply (and easier for me) moves the riff for A on the next pair of strings on the same frets, but he never repeats that again (and never in the recording).
Awesome when you mention the chords being played and how they relate to the bass notes. I think very essential in understanding the logic and helps to even provide variations at times as long as makes sense. Most tabs never mention the chords, which helps especially when bass line all over fingerboard. ;)
Wow! Excellent work Maestro! one of my favorite songs from the early The Beatles years. Seeing that Hofner bass, I remind myself that I had one like that, too bad I had to sell it in 2008 (due to the crisis). Although the bass line I learned back then was not as accurate as this one. Anyway, I'm going to learn it on guitar so I don't forget. Great Maestro and Thanks!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yeah...the lead break in a live setting is a great place for a Train Wreck, if one of the guitarists aren’t paying attention! Good stuff Mike. BTW... I used round wounds on my Hofner. Great punch from that bass.
Loved this rocker since the first time I heard it! The Dear Prudence bass line has always been one of my favorites! Please consider doing this one! Wantcha come out to play it?

50 years ago it was in the top 3 favorite Beatles rockers. Not anymore. Maybe 'cause of the overplay on the radio, constant song on Paul's set-list. I have tickets to see Paul at SoFi stadium here in Los Ángeles next month, May 2022!! Thank you Mike for a great explanation. Please, Please Me has a great middle bass sequence. Can you do that song? In any event. Thank you as always!!
Like many have posted here already, we would love more bass lessons. If i can make request for Two of us, George's bass part. That would be fantastic. Thank you so much!
There is a remarkable drumming break in this song, combining time signatures 3/4 and 16/16. It's a rare drawing, since the Beatles I haven't heard it from any other artist. But it sounds great, creating an atmosphere of light-hearted fun and energy
Hey Mike I actually took the time to try my hoffner violin bass too I saw her standing there and I gotta tell you . I’m actually hook on the bass to. You teaching Beatles technics are so precise and it’s like playing a video game with the chord sequence. I’m mostly a rythem guitarist on my Rick which once again by your teaching you made me enjoy the Rick also and I wanna thank you so much. Ya make me laugh when you change your voice as John. Ever played in a tribute as John . You should. I seen you blues playing on the straight u z man…… bro
Thanks, Mike! I asked for a bass lesson just last week and then you just go ahead and deliver like a boss! Can we have Come Together next? I’ve always wondered what the slide is in that third note: a string slide to top A, or D string slide to high F?
Used to play Chuck's "I'm Talking About You" around 80 in a band I was with and never heard The Beatles version back then, It was always a fun bass part to play & at times during the tune I may play a slight variation without thinkin' bout it, not sure if that's what Paul could have done. Also have used the bass riff or something very similar in other tunes, most recently in the bridge of "Mohair Sam" (Charlie Rich). Always played with fingers, no pick it's a quick tempo I believe "I Saw Her Standing There" is about 10BPM faster than Talkin' bout you ...
Thanks for the great lesson, Mike. I echo other people's comments that it would be great to have some bass specific lessons. BTW, what strings are you using on the Hofner.
Its a workout for sure and imagine he came up with this very busy baseline at his tender age like it was nothing. It totally drives the song. Hamburg paid off.
I’ve tried singing and playing bass very hard takes lots of practice not very good at it, but one thing I think may help is to not focus on what your playing sounds like and instead trust that the notes you play will sound correct, so that frees up mental capacity for singing. Even though the notes are simple and few the rhythm is driving and you can see Paul moving with his body keeping that rhythm like a good bassist/singer probably has to/ enjoys too
How in the world can you sing when your fingers are all over the place? That's a talent in itself!!!
How do you play “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” and sing!?!?!
Piano players play different patterns in their left and right hands all the time.
@@marcbolan1818 I'm pretty sure John overdubbed the vocals, among other things.
