NHL in 4K Broadcast

  • Here's a quick snipet from a 4K broadcast of an NHL game from January 25th, 2022 between the Florida Panthers and the Winnipeg Jets. Notice the artifact(?) in the top left quarter of the screen where a visible rectangle can be seen during most of the action. I'm not sure what causes this but I've noticed the same or similar artifacts in the top left quarter on other broadcasts as well including some CFL games. This was recorded from a Shaw XG1v4 4K PVR but I've seen artifacts present from a Telus VIP5662W 4K PVR as well which leads me to believe it is a broadcast/in house issue rather than something faulty with the PVR's themselves. I've only seen this issue with TSN broadcasts but not Sportsnet broadcasts for some reason.

Wish we had 4k 60fps nhl streams . Crazy how far nhl broadcasting is compared to literally every other sport . Sad

It looks like they are composing the picture of 4 1080p blocks and that the blocks aren't seamless. It's pretty distracting. I wouldn't be able to watch a game that way.

That's what I was thinking as well, it appeared the top left quarter was only a few milliseconds behind the other 3 blocks but it made it pretty hard to watch. I've only seen this happen on 4k broadcasts a handful of times but when it happens it ruins the broadcast.

@@xXSPfan70Xx It's not just the left quadrant. During some of the play you can see when the puck moves across the half way point that the left side and right side don't matchup exactly. And the same is true of the horizontal. When things pan from top to bottom you can see the line dividing the top and bottom half. The left top is just the more noticeably off. But the entire thing is just wonky.

@@exturkconner that section is for the scoreboard graphics. They just didn't have it synced up well.

The screen tearing is nasty. Hope they sort that out
Edit: actually it's not screen tearing. it seems to be a little space on the screen for score graphics that wasn't synced up well with the main source

Why can’t we get all the games now in 4K? It’s not like 2/3rd of all North American households don’t have access for to at least one. 90+% of all TVs sold now are capable! If they can superimpose their rotating ads on the boards and on the glass then they should be able to afford to spend a few extra bucks to give us something that really improves the quality of what we see. Hey it’s not like Comcast didn’t make 45 BILLION DOLLARS last year. They can afford it!

Why tf is it 2024 and games are still in 720p? What a fucking joke. Same thing in the nba
