In This episode I will be reviewing a 9’6 Cherry Picker by Skin Dog Surfboards in thunderbolt silver technology. When the WSL changed their format to focus on a balance of high performance and traditional Longboarding Ben Skindog Skinner had to change his equipment to keep the Judges interested. The Cherry Picker is Ben’s answer to the perfect balanced log with performance feel. With it’s long concave, and spoiler style tail rocker well let’s get a closer look. The nose rocker is pretty elevated for a “traditional log” and the tail rocker is really low but it has this spoiler at the tail to make up for the tail rocker. Giving the board more glide without taking away from nose work
The nose has a 50/50 rail to a full 60/40 in the middle and the tail is a pinched 50/50 with almost an edge. Bottom is a deep concave 2/3rds of the board to a rolled v in front of a fin to a deep single concave from the fin box to the tail. I ran the Cherry Picker with a 10 inch Sub by Flying Diamonds fin and a 10.5 Cali pivot by Flying Diamonds.

I own a Cherry Picker. The thing surfs like a weapon! It goes exactly where you point it. It'll do anything you want, anytime. You didn't mention 2 things. 1) it has a big flat spot (belly) toward the rear which acts as a great pivot point, adding to the instant-fast turnability. 2) it's not great on 6' or above waves. Just to loose. Phenomenal on 3-4 foot days. -- Great review!

This board is so much fun to ride, excels in every category. Is nimble when you wanna turn it yet locks on the wave when you wanna go to the nose.
It was love at forst sessiin, catching every wave and goung to the nose in an instant and that tail holding ground. Had tpns of fun on very marginal waves today.
My Apex 9'1" did not feel as fun

Thanks Jim. It is one of the easiest boards that I have surfed that really nail the 50/50 style of long boarding. It’s some of the most fun I have had in a while.

Fantastic review and how well are you surfing. These are hard to get and going to be harder after watching this LOL. Ben has got 2nd on the WSL longboard tour on this board at Manly recently and I think last year at Malibu. Looking forward to a comparison with Sprout.

@@surfcraftunion yeah, I'm not fully into logs nor HP longboarding. So seeing this review of something that blends the two was super interesting. I'm wondering how Ben would compare his cherry picker to his blender model (also another mix of the two styles).
@@whoaitsjape I think the Cherry is more inclined to noseride. But honestly I wanna try his blender model now haha
My cherry picker snapped, and a big part of the bottom of the board just opened up... Will it be good again?

Great review. Love Ben's boards and have two but nothing in the 9'6 range. Have you been able to ride the Peacemaker 9'6? If so, how does it compare in your view to the Cherry Picker. Watching Ben on this board it seems like more effort is required to turn off the tail, appears to require a more grunt pivot style turn but maybe a close second to the Peacemaker on the nose. Are you in San Diego area? And thanks for the info on the Faro bag. I'll be grabbing one.
Thank you. I never rode the Peacemaker. It looks a little too high pro for my personal liking. I am in New Jersey and the Faro bags are great.
Awesome review. I'm digging the tail on that board. The width and spoiler concept seems to make sense. How would you compare the noserides between this board and the M. Takayama perplexer?
Thank you for the feedback. So the tail spoiler is really what led me to want to get the Cherry Picker. As far as comparing noserides to the Perplexer I think they are two different feelings. Cherry Picker I found I was up there longer but the Takayama was actually a little easier to get up to on the nose. Which is odd because it is about a 1 1/2 narrower. But it could also have to do with the Perplexer being poly and a little heavier and that is why. It's funny because I had several people say that the Cherry Picker and the Perplexer are the same board. They are not at all... Completely different rails, rocker, concave, and overall outlines. As I said in the review I probably got the wrong board for my waves by Michael T. The perplexed is designed for more point break waves I Suppose due to its shape and design. But I did find that the Cherry Picker went pretty good in my "junky" waves. Again keep in mind this board was designed by someone to surf everything. Not just perfection. I hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions.
@@surfcraftunion Thanks for the reply. I thought the Cherry Picker somewhat resembled the Perplexer, which is why I asked, so I appreciate your response on the comparison. I thought the same between the outline of the CJ Nelson Sprout and the Bing Continental, so I'm looking forward to your Sprout review. I have a 10' and 9'6 Sprout, which I've been hooked on over the last year and to me has been the best noserider that I have ever owned. Really curious to see how you feel it compared to the Continental though.

Really well done review. I like your using the level on the bottom profile and in depth observations with some shredding! I just ordered a Harley Diamond Drive and now I'm second guessing but you said you'd take maneuverability over nose riding? That kinda hit because the Diamond Drive is described as a HPLB. Anyway, my first longboard purchase. I usually ride shortboard/fishes. Again, well done.

Hi, unfortunately I haven't even waxed her yet. I'm on Long Island, NY. There's swell and enough for me to shortboard but getting cold and hang it up Jan, Feb. Going to use it for those crowded summer rollers. It feels good though, light for how big it is. I'll try to remember. @@dekismokton2407

I just bought a CJ Nelson "Colapintail" I'm loving it. CJ quit producing it since Corey Colapinto started surfing for another company. That motivated me to snach it up. -- I'm liking CJ's shapes a lot. -- but probably after a Kai Salas next.
I’m currently trying to choose between the Cherry Picker and the Apex. You’ve spoken highly of both boards. How do they stack up when you compare them to each other?
It’s a tough one. So both work very well in a good range of conditions. The cherry picker nose rides a bit better and has more of a carve style turn and the Apex trims better and outline wise it’s less board. It also kinda comes to a volume decision with the thunderbolt stuff. They are super floaty and have just a different feel in the water. The apex sits higher in the water which some people like more and the CP sits a bit lower which some like more. Honestly either are amazing. Also one last thing. I think the CP kinda taps out at chest high and the apex can be surfed in bigger waves too. The hard edge in the apex helps when it’s a little more critical. Honestly I would watch my two reviews on both and see kinda more of what your going for. They where both filmed within a few months of each other.
