So beautiful and moving it’s in a class all it’s own. What fools and idiots could give this a thumbs down? They should go back to Lawrence Welk or country western!
Still by FAR, the best ever combination of brilliant jazz musicianship and empathetic connectivity. So sorry Phil is no longer with us but his music is forever.
A really beautiful song and a classic record of Phil Woods. What a master he was at sound on the alto and how to get the most out of a melody. He is greatly missed.
There is so much amazing content on UA-cam, we often take it for granted the ability to experience piece of this masterful history on our fingertips. Thanks for posting!
What a wonderful performance...Phil brought the best emotions out of the song and gave it a depth that I seldom hear. He and Michel created a wonderful bond for the song.
I love seeing musicians watching each other and improvising, rather then watching sheet music, real music comes from great musicians improvising off each other
Love how Michel will just grunts or screams in the middle of his show if he likes something the other guy did !! He can't contain himself ! (I consider it a bonus hint of emotion from the artist, since he doesn't sing, and not a ruining of the performance). My dad played like Michel, and it's amazing what a human can do and equally amazing how tragic it is when the man dies and the fingers won't work even to feed himself food. And upon watching a man live 80 some years doing those things, makes me feel like my first 40 years has been a total waste, aside from the fact that I got to hear it and love it. Obviously that's not enough. Men have to learn and do things. Not just watch. How sad. but what if we are not all staked with the talent or ability? perhaps we don't rate being able to ever do these things?
Phil had the horn he bought at the factory in the late 50s gold plated some time in the mid 90s, then played it for a little while and was having general difficulty with the horn. Emilio Lyons found Phil the above horn which is a 78k serial number, his original was 82k serial. He played the 78k for a few years but was still having difficulty. Turned out he had cancer, emphysema, lost all his teeth and was about to retire shortly after this video, but the Yamaha he played for years after was much easier to play so he kept going until the end.
It never showed that Phil had difficulty with his Mark VI, whether rhe first or the second...! It is true, though, the me moved to a Yamaha towards the end of his life as the Yamaha was lighter, and therefore better "to an old man", than the Selmer.
Beautiful piece, given masterly Woods treatment: a unique alto sound, wonderful improvisation.
I think this video proves the real beauty and the reason why youtube should exist..!

MICHEL LEGRAND PHIL WOODS 'LA MUSICA'!!
Phil is God.
Who are those few people who disliked it and why on heaven did they do it?
Where did Phil Woods get that Mark VI? The one he's had since the late 50s has a high F# key on it. This one doesn't.
Phil had the horn he bought at the factory in the late 50s gold plated some time in the mid 90s, then played it for a little while and was having general difficulty with the horn.
