I followed every last step and the end result was great. I even downloaded the Softube Saturation Knob! I know this video is super old but I'm new to music production so I needed this!!!
This is actually a great pace for mixing explanations. I like how you keep things moving. The beauty of UA-cam is we can simply rewind over and over on our own if we’re not quite keeping up in certain moments. Great vid thanks
Thanks Austin for one of the best mixing tuturials i´ve ever seen! I would love to see more about "leveling" the drums like you mentioned in the end of the part three video, limiting and compression to get even more energy. You are a thrue inspiration for other musicians!
Thanks for this tutorial. I'm very new to this and this (as well as the how to record drums videos) has helped a lot! I know creating content like this must have taken some time for you, so thanks for doing so as it has helped me get started with mixing drums in my home studio.
Nice! thats a pretty cool why to verb out drums. I would usually have a little bit more control over how much verb I put on each part of the kit. more on the snare... Less on the kick. its great to eq out the low end of verb. Halls are soo great with drums. I even sometimes use a plate
once again you've absolutely killed it man. I ended up with a Scarlett 18i20 and the Audix D series mics. can't wait to apply what I've learned to some of my raw tracks to see what I can get out of them. it's so frustrating when you don't know where to begin. I'm still trying to get mic placement just right. one of my main playing issues is that I'm constantly doing rim shots on the snare every time I hit it. it's a bad habit I haven't been able to break but I'm working on it. my playing style is literally beat the hell out of my drums which I feel like makes recording a little more interesting to say the least. I'm going to pick up an octepre mk2 dynamic I think next to record the band I'm in live during practice. but, first we have to finish our third album.. the only thing left to record is live drums.
Great series of vids, Austin. Really enjoyed them (and the How to Record Drums series, too). I appreciate the time and effort put into them. I picked up some good workflow tips from this. Cool!
Hey Austin! Firstly I want to say that you put out some really good quality videos that are actually really helpful for us drummers. It would definitely be cool if you put out more mixing tutorials and stuff like that. Also, I recently started studying Billy Rymer, idk if you've heard about him but he's a fantastic metal drummer, and I think he would be a great guy to do a video on for your study the greats series!

Damn man, clean and concise as ever. Very well done, you make it look easy. So on a scale of 1 to 10, how dead is the room you are recording in? Your sounds come out very isolated.
+Austin Burcham is it a 10 because adding room and reverb sound after the fact is much better/easier than trying to eliminate the "real" room and reverb sound after the fact?
i really hope you can transcript some of the thomas lang stuff if you have time, i love his fills and licks, but i can't find any transcription of his playing. I have no idea how to play those.
I rarely use gates because I go for a more natural, open sound. But you could apply a gate as the first plugin on individual channels if you want that kind of control.
Thank you for this series Austin it helped me. Probably a silly question, but can you save all of these settings as a template, and then record straight to it so everything is already set right after you recorded? For multiple drum covers etc.
Guilherme Rosa i gues this is just one time at the sum track! You can do indiviaully too but takes long time to get done! U can make sum for similar instruments! Like drums, guitars, vocal chorus
No TrueVerb isn’t a free plugin. I have it as part of my Waves bundle. I actually just uploaded a new reverb tutorial like 5 minutes ago if you want to go check that out haha. I use the built in Space Designer for that one.
Sup man, i have exactly the same issue. You can 1. Record upper part of drums and then add Samples of Kick and Snare. 2. Record whole kit and replace everything by corresponding samples 3. Record Drums as they are (if you don't have studio it will be fucked up) The biggest problem is NOISE. When you will hear your recroding especially if it have some HOT parts you will get it. BUT MAN, dont waste time and to it all with samples, it will be much better and easier, some eq, comp, reverb and job is done. :3
Thanks Austin for one of the best mixing tuturials i´ve ever seen! I would love to see more about "leveling" the drums like you mentioned in the end of the part three video, limiting and compression to get even more energy. You are a thrue inspiration for other musicians!

Nice explanation! I don’t know why I never thought of EQ’ing the reverb, it’s a huge difference.
Right? Me too!

second this

Your video series is a great tut! Thanks for taking time to put these together!
Man this is a great series. Very informative, and inviting!
Thanks Austin. Total newb here. You're breaking it down nice and easy for me.
Hello from Russia! A man you really helped me to tell everything very simply, I looked at all your releases about drums! THANK YOU!
Thanks for this tutorial. I'm very new to this and this (as well as the how to record drums videos) has helped a lot! I know creating content like this must have taken some time for you, so thanks for doing so as it has helped me get started with mixing drums in my home studio.
This was an incredibly good 3 part series for drum mixing lol 👌🏻
Short and to the point so everyone can get it! Great!
Excellent! Perfect for me who just started in my own home studio. 👍
your vídeos have bieen really helpful!
tnx so so so. How simple and so effective!

Super helpful. Just brought up a decent mix, and made it sound even better. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for this cool summary!! :)
Great video 1-3, thanks!
Great series my guy!
Thanks for all 3 videos bro

thanks for this series, AB
It sounds great to me
Great Series That helps me a lot. How do you bring up the volume ?
I am new to this recording stuff….
For overall loudness, just pull up a Limiter on the Master bus and use that to get it as loud as possible without distorting.
Thanks for the great videos, these will help me a ton
This helped me so much! thank you

Thanks for the knowledge
Great video bro :)
I have FL Studio, please tell me what's the best space designer in FL Studio like that in Logic? :) Nice tutorials btw
Fruity Convolver Is a stock reverb plugin in FL, pretty similar to Space Designer, you should check out. Cheers
Many thanks
Thank you!
Damn man, clean and concise as ever. Very well done, you make it look easy. So on a scale of 1 to 10, how dead is the room you are recording in? Your sounds come out very isolated.
10 haha
+Austin Burcham is it a 10 because adding room and reverb sound after the fact is much better/easier than trying to eliminate the "real" room and reverb sound after the fact?
Gareth Blyth nah I wish I had a more "live" room... it's just the way the room is constructed and the small size that makes it super dead.
i really hope you can transcript some of the thomas lang stuff if you have time, i love his fills and licks, but i can't find any transcription of his playing. I have no idea how to play those.
I’m new to mixing drums. When do you gate?
I rarely use gates because I go for a more natural, open sound. But you could apply a gate as the first plugin on individual channels if you want that kind of control.
thank you very much! ) how EQ Yamaha SubKick microphone???&Shure beta 51a?
Thank you for this series Austin it helped me. Probably a silly question, but can you save all of these settings as a template, and then record straight to it so everything is already set right after you recorded? For multiple drum covers etc.
+John Rella Yea definitely. Just choose "Save As Template" and you're good to go.
Totally figured that out right after I asked..but thank you
very nice great
Hei man, can you help me with the Reverb Aux ? Do you use these same aux for another instruments or you create a Reverb Aux for each instrument ?
Guilherme Rosa i gues this is just one time at the sum track! You can do indiviaully too but takes long time to get done! U can make sum for similar instruments! Like drums, guitars, vocal chorus
i like it .
Cool maaaaaan
谢谢!
hey Austin...learn some Meshuggah or Tomas Haak drum parts...preffererably bleed.
Why do you got a kick in and kick out..? And can I see more about it in one of your other videos?
BTW.. Great video...
Mic on the INside and on the OUTside of the kick drum.
and next step in cleaning the drum sound would be the use of gates.
When I try to do my first send (Bus 1) its already taken as Drums > Bus 1 > Drums based on the group, yours doesn't have this in the video!
A bus is folder in Reaper, right?
Not necessarily. You would use Routing for that and also you can adjust the amount you are sending to that track.
Great video. But is trueverb really free? says like like 60 buck when i searched for it.
No TrueVerb isn’t a free plugin. I have it as part of my Waves bundle. I actually just uploaded a new reverb tutorial like 5 minutes ago if you want to go check that out haha. I use the built in Space Designer for that one.
Sounds great! Thanks for responding :D
How to mix drums if you are recording with 1 mic? Please help. I want to make my sound as good as possible.
Sup man, i have exactly the same issue. You can
1. Record upper part of drums and then add Samples of Kick and Snare.
2. Record whole kit and replace everything by corresponding samples
3. Record Drums as they are (if you don't have studio it will be fucked up)

BUT MAN, dont waste time and to it all with samples, it will be much better and easier, some eq, comp, reverb and job is done. :3
+ NO NOISE :3
Also I would say that if possible don't let people record drums without dedicated room mics.
Thanks Austin for one of the best mixing tuturials i´ve ever seen! I would love to see more about "leveling" the drums like you mentioned in the end of the part three video, limiting and compression to get even more energy. You are a thrue inspiration for other musicians!
