    For comparison, check out the Gen2 2.7L Ecoboost I tore down from a 2018 F150 here: • 2018 Ford F150 2.7L Ec...
    If this is the first teardown you've seen, I've done well over 150 others over the last 3 years! There's a good chance I've torn down the engine you want to see!
    Today's teardown is a 2.7L Ecoboost from a 2015-2017 Ford F-150. This engine is a core return which means a salvage yard sold a good used engine and charged a "core" charge which is refunded when the old engine is returned. That's where I come in. This engine comes from Robertson's Used Auto Parts up in Mapleton IL. Unfortunately I don't know all of the details on why this engine was replaced but thats why I'm here. I tear these engines down to not only salvage the good parts, but to figure out what happened. Kind of an automotive murder-mystery.
    Why am I doing this? My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage yard in the Saint Louis Missouri area called Importapart. Part of our model includes buying failed engines and dismantling them to salvage the good parts to resell. We do not rebuild engines, merely supply parts to those who do!
    I really hope you enjoyed this teardown. As always, I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one!
    -Eric

      That belt isnt a potential problem, its a guaranteed problem as shown other videos already on YT about the belts shredding before breaking and plugging the oil pick up. It seems Ford engineers thought they were such a good idea that they implemented the new Coyote 5,0 with that junk idea.

Not only the 2.7, 3.5 and 5.0s but majority of the ecoboosts since 2016-17 has been belt driven oil pumps and seen some brands had wet timing belts come apart but remember that they are claimed to be “lifetime of the engine” belts. Well when they come apart the engines are destroyed so yea thats the end of their life at that point. I was going to post a pic of a buddys 2022 F150 torn down with the belt driven oil pump but i cant here

    Fun With Turbos!
    Take some exhaust "els" and weld them together so that you form a tube that takes the air from the compressor wheel and leads it to the turbine. NOW, install a bung for a tube that can be connected to a propane tank with a valve. And a bung for a spark plug and it's electronic unit with D-cell batteries. Using a small pump, provide oil flow for the turbo center section bearings.
    Now, hook up the propane tank. Turn on the pump for the oil. Use a leaf blower into the intake of the compressor to get the turbo up to speed. When it is at max speed that your leaf blower can make, turn on the spark and slowly open the propane valve with the spark firing. You now own a turbojet engine, and you will hear it slowly increase in speed to the point where it will idle without the blower.
    If you increase the propane, you increase the speed of the rotating assembly to the point where it blows apart, I urge caution....

    This is another great tear down. I like Ford because they think of the little things, like owning a complete tool set but not using most of it, Ford makes sure to include every size of fastener from standard, metric, torx, hex, 3 square, you name it they include it. I would like to thank you for creating a channel and sticking to the foundations that make great content. Informative and, entertaining. This channel has grown and developed into a masterpiece, and speaking of things that have grown.... no not that..... your engine "shelf" is taking over your shop one wall at a time and will soon bury you in all the unopened treasures of malice held within the combustion palace, most simply refer to as a "core". Keep up the great content and new things.

The Ford supplied wheel spanner just finished up ROUND.

    Its also possible the engine being turbo direct injection, had an LSPI(low speed preignition) event. LSPIs can knock on the order of 15+ megapascals that can break a piston crown or ring land in an instant. By the time you hear marbles in a can is already too late. After that it can just burn oil and run until it burns through the rest of the piston, which can take a while with vastly increased oil consumption. API SP oil was developed specifically to help reduce LPSI events.

    • @DavidD-qr2vn
      @DavidD-qr2vn 11 місяців тому +5

      Yep, when I saw the broken top land I figured LSPI. These LSPI events plague all TDI engines from all manufacturers and were a major investigation/development/investment area prior to the massive investments in electric drives.

He left the dealership shop where he had bought it and got on the freeway onramp which was right in front of the dealership and stomped on the gas. The engine went 'BOOM' in smoke and steam so bad that a piston came out of the block with so much force that it bent the motor mount. Ford then gave him a new engine. In 61 and owned 34 vehicles in my lifetime . A simple 4 barrel carburetor with a single turbo would work. EPA Gansters Destroyed the auto industry and back yard mechanics. Course this was done on PURPOSE. No wonder why modern engines have so many issues. Look at the Rats nest wiring harness and everything attaches to it. Great video, thanks.

    • @glamdring0007
      @glamdring0007 11 місяців тому

      Regular maintenance wont have any impact on the carbon problem...on even the best maintained DI engine it's a simple matter of time and the EGR system dumping oil back into the top end where it always ends up on the intake valves. The only true solution is an engine with a split fuel rail incorporating both direct and port FI to keep the intake valves washed clean.

    The water pump sequence ... in around 2006 I worked in a computer repair shop that just happened to have a forklift. I had a customer ask me to destroy a hard drive for him, I didn't ask what for or why ... I went out and used the trusty forklift to flatten the drive. Just one thing though ... that old Yale forklift did nothing to the drive aside from embedding it into the asphalt (hot Arizona summer). I had pry the drive out of the asphalt with a large screwdriver. Board on the drive was destroyed but that old Maxtor drive otherwise didn't flinch. Wound up taking a cross peen hammer to it to finish the job the forklift could not.

    Once you showed all the oil in one turbo/exhaust port, but the engine hadn’t ventilated itself and there weren’t a ton of metal pieces around the engine, I was pretty sure it was going to be a broken piston ring land. Pretty common on DI turbo engines, especially in trucks because they cruise down the freeway at 10-15psi of boost at 2000rpm. Could be a lean cylinder, or it could have been getting a bunch of crankcase vent vapors.

    • @Mis73rRand0m

      What about carbon on the valves causing incomplete sealing and hot spots? I bet there was preignition from a hot valve lip which did the initial damage and pulverized the crown, then it started burning through the exposed ring area and blowing oil.

    • @crazycoffee
      @crazycoffee 11 місяців тому

      I'm not very knowledgeable on these Ford's but could have it been a stuck injector or one that's spraying too much? From how the pistons looked the entire engine was lean.

      @dm7254001 11 місяців тому +1

      @@Mis73rRand0m I think incomplete sealing of the valves would lower cyl pressure. Lower compression stops preignition. Hot spot on leaking exhaust could light the charge but should not hurt the piston without having full compression.

    I think the positioning of the three chains, timing, oil pump, timing, makes sense. Not from an ease of maintenance point of view, but from a use of space one. When the offset between the two banks is two chain-width, yu space the two timing chains that far apart, and yu hav a gap on the crankshaft where yu can put a third chain.

Just like regular oil changes are cheap maintenance, if you planning on towing, a tank or 2 of 91 will go a long way to prolonging your engines life.

  • @ToasterTR
    @ToasterTR 11 місяців тому +4

    given the context that this motor came out of an f150, with the clues of lean burn, overheating, and lack of an explosive failure. it seems pretty clear (to me) that this was possibly a towing failure
    the turbos were completely spooled (lean) for a long time (loaded, overheat) at a low rpm (no big boom) and it [melted] the motor as a result.
    am i correct? maybe not, but this motor doesnt look like it was abused like most of the other motors that you see. its the most likely scenario in my mind.
