      Have you ever dabbled with the freeze drying method of preserving food and if so, what do you think about it. I have been considering it because in a lot of natural disasters potable water isn't necessarily available and with the freeze-dried food whether beans or fruit or veggies they can be eaten as is.

    I grind those little canned hams and make sandwiches spread with it. (Add mayonnaise and little sweet relish a dab of mustard) and I also use leftover mashed potatoes ,an egg a tiny bit of flour to help hold the patty together mixed in the ground ham to make ham patties...both are very good at stretching the food to feed more for less.

    I absolutely love your advice and guidance. You are like a dear friend, who imparts skills we should have learned from our elders. As an adult, I had to teach myself skills I hadn’t learned, but then took a few years off to go to school once my homeschooled children were adults, rather than becoming skilled as a homemaker. I loved learning in college, but my eyes and mind have been opened to all the many things I could have learned without spending so much money. My daughters bought me your book and I am working on becoming a homemaker at 65 years old. Thank you and God bless.

    Another idea is learning to can. I have canned chicken, ground beef and sausage.
    The chicken is raw pack but the ground beef and sausage are hot pack.
    So much cheaper than store canned.

    Your story about the baked beans is just precious. My Dad is 88 he too was a child during the depression and talks about that pop of baked beans was the meal compared to now being a side dish. They even ate beans with eggs for breakfast and now it's our favorite

      @Natalie Butler my family came to the "Americas" in 1640. We still keep many traditions . Just not a fan of the mashed peas over a baked potato

    I live in a four-season climate in the country in Canada. I started buying pantry items in August to have all the extras I need by the end of October so I am not hard-pressed to get out in our full winter months. I keep a healthy supply of herbal teas. I also bought powdered whole milk so I can make a half and half blend of the powdered and the liquid milk,.I keep a good supply of tuna and salmon tins on hand--so versatile amd shelf stable. 🥰🎶❤️🇨🇦

    We have a very small property, (less than 1/4 acre)which we make the very best of. As well as veg, we grow a lot of fruit on it. The land was pretty cheap because it had a high sand content, and was bare of vegetation, (except for weeds!). For the first few years I got leaves and compost from neighbors and grocery stores.
    - Blueberries are the easiest of all the fruits to harvest; just pick 'em and freeze 'em - they love acidic soil, so use your coffee grounds to fertilize. I get free coffee grounds from coffee shops on my town trips. If you don't have a pick up truck, line a good, heavy box to throw their bagged grinds in.
    - Strawberries are pretty easy to harvest & freeze. For easy harvest, I have a sturdy old stool I drag along, (I'm in my 70s).
    -Fruit trees are all grafted onto DWARF root stock. Those smaller trees produce an amazing amount of fruit, but you can actually access all of it without climbing up on an extension ladder to harvest or prune. I got my trees for only $10.00 each because it was late in the season, and the trees were stressed, so I had to watch them very carefully for pests, and I lovingly babied them for the first two years, and now they're as healthy as if they had always been robust.
    I had a choice to get food or non-food producing plants and our lot is now healthy, pretty. Since we concentrate the compost around the plants we made paths between and around them - no lawn mower!

    In lieu of a lot of bottled water, I have a good quality (Katadyne) water purifier and also water purification tablets. You need a water collection vessel and clean, BPA-free containers for storage.

    Hi Mary, I have been listening to you for months, and some of your vlogs multiple times. I have spent the past 4-5 months building a Prepper Pantry. I have put inventory onto my iPad, but now thinking that I want to transfer to a binder using your prepared forms. I need to find your forms and print off a set. There are 6 people, 3 generations,in our home right now and I am thinking a binder accessible to everyone might be helpful. I watch multiple preppers/homesteaders. We have a large home, on 1/3 acre in the Rocky Mountains. We have had a small kitchen garden the past 3 years, and have expanded each year….and have already begun things inside even though we are still in full-blown Winter here: but Spring is trying to move in…we get snow here until May. So, thank you for your wonderful teaching. You are easy to listen to, and very practical. We are fresh/frozen food people and have lots of freezer space, but not enough. Definitely Traditional food lovers. I have learned to make bone broth and desperately working at less food waste. Hard with so many people, teens to seniors. Our son-in-law and daughter are very good at taking left-overs for lunches which is good. I have commercially canned foods in the prepper pantry in our storage room in our basement, as well as rice, oats, flours, chocolate chips, dried fruits and commercially canned fruits, etc. I have wonderful premade soup mixes. I have stocks and both canned and powdered, etc. Lots of herbs and spices in kitchen and extras in the prepper pantry. Now, I am building up the 30 year freeze dried kinds of foods. All three forms will keeps us making the same favorite meals we enjoy…just from fresh/frozen, to commercially canned (including canned chicken, corned beef, tuna, a little beef (never used it before but at least something should fresh beef not be available, or affordable). I also have low salt Spam, and canned ham. I do not have any freeze dried meats as they are very expensive and truly hoping that we will not need that. We are not hunters, but we could be. We have lots of friends who are, so we have agreed to barter should it come to that: I can make breads, and we are expanding our kitchen garden to potatoes (second year and have them started inside right now). Hoping to build a green house soon. So, if we can have room for growing “salad foods” and plenty of herbs year around will be awesome. And, will gladly share/barter. Anyway….thank you as you have helped me the most. It is a lot of work but thankful that I am big into cooking and gardening. Getting rid of “stuff” to make room for food. Praying it will not be needed. And, if not, then we will simply incorporate the commercially canned foods into our daily life. I do believe we will leave the 30-year kinds of foods where they are…..just in case needed. My husband and I will not life that much longer: 82 and 77, but our kids and grands will. So, we will leave them with some “insurance” for the future if we are blessed to not need them in our life time. So, off to find and print your lovely forms and set up a binder all can see and use.

A lot of it was things I knew but still of review is always good and I definitely like the worksheets and will be incorporating them.     Bone Broth is SUPER NUTRITIOUS!!! We also had massive vegetable gardens and a fruit orchard which we harvested as a family each fall to put in our root cellar and for pickling and preserving. 🥰🎶❤️🇨🇦

    My husband is a hunter and I used to be pretty picky about organ meats, but now I view it as a challenge to use as much of the animal as possible. We eat the organs, we eat the meat, I make bone broth, and my husband is learning how to tan the hides. It's amazing to me when we are done how little of the animal is left over. You have been such a great part of this journey by teaching about bone broth.

    Dear Mary, since finding your channel we are cleaning up our act, moving toward a traditional foods kitchen! Dry milk was a huge discovery!! We stopped buying commercial coffee creamer (I was shocked to realize the ingredients in it 😳) and also wanted to have a prepper pantry milk option. The non-fat dry milk is surprisingly delicious in coffee!! We bought a big box for the prepper pantry but we're using it daily for coffee too! Thank you so much - I continue to learn so much from you!! ❤

      Mary has a fabulous "DIY creamer" recipe on her website. It's basically dry milk powder and the (dry) sugar of your choice mixed in a blender or nutribullet. It makes a wonderful powdered coffee creamer :D

    That definitely sounds like a migraine headache. I don’t have them often but they feel just like what you describe. I do basically the same thing you do and it really helps the pain and nausea.

    One of the things im doing to save on the grocery budget is growing and preserving as much as i possibly can and mixing my own seasoning like chili beef stew taco in labeled jars . And learning to make my own condiments . Id really like to get to the point all i need from grocery is flour sugar corn meal corn starch baking soda salt and pepper

      I already have chickens and am thinking of getting a pig and get my beef from a local cattle farm where theyve been doing things the same way for almost 300 years because the farm has remained with the same family .

    When I get those blinding headaches, I take 2 Tylenol and 1 Advil with a room temperature Coke. The does help settle the stomach and the caffeine helps address the constricted blood vessels. The best preventative measure is to drink barrels of water each day. Dehydration is the culprit for a lot of headaches but when a migraine breaks through, I find the Coke does help.

    As a migraine sufferer, the excedrine and a cold soda made with sugar was one of my go to reliefs! I used to use a Dubin Dr Pepper, but it worked so well! I think it is a mix of getting the caffine and sugar into your system from the soda as the meds break down. The only cold just helped me deal with the pain, rather than putting a cold wash cloth on my head.

      thankfully I don't have them any more, but you're right. If I could catch it early, a Coke, Excedrin, and if possible a dark room for 15 minutes always worked.

      A friend introduced me to having a latte at Starbucks for migraines which were crippling at times. The caffeine, milk sugars, a little sugar and protein to slow it all down. Regular coffee didn't work the same.

      @@emmasurf8109 Wondering, since I haven't tried this relevan remedy in years, if the America coca cola made with HFCS instead of cane sugar would work. (The few times I indulge in sodas I find some drink Mexico that's have sugar instead of corn syrup.)

    You need regular granulated sugar for the hummingbirds as they can't handle the minerals in a good sugar. I do make sure it is cane sugar if I am going to use it also.

    You mentioned using the Coca Cola for settling the stomach. An old fashioned remedy for nausea is to sip some straight cola syrup. I keep that in my emergency supplies. One time when I had to take antibiotics without water on an empty stomach prior to surgery, I asked to use a sip of cola syrup to coat the stomach. The surgeon had never heard of it but gave me the go-ahead...and it worked like a charm!! That could be helpful for those of us that don't have access to the cane sugar cola.

      YES, that has always been our family remedy. Cola syrup is still available at the drugstores. Love Mexican Cokes. So glad they are still making it.

    Hi Mary! I haven’t gotten thru the entire video yet, but I wanted to comment before I forget. For beverages, i will buy fruit that’s in season and steam it to make my own fruit juice, then I can it. It doesn’t have any added sugar, and when I need it I just open up a jar and dilute as needed. It’s wonderful and so much better than commercially made fruit juices!

      I can up crab apple juice each year and use half a glass crab apple, sugar to taste and then add sparkling water to top it off. They have small soda machines less than 100$ well worth the cost of you like sodas. I am picky and only use pure cane sugar sodas or make them myself.

    Hi Mary!! Pomona's pectin allows you to use little to no sugar for your jelly or jam. I use it all the time. Works perfectedly!

    We are doing Jessica's pantry challenge. She is so sweet. My husband and I bought a few cans of fish(I can't remember what kind) during a grocery trip last Fall. We often buy tuna but had never bought this before. I told my husband I'm going to have to figure out something to do with it if we are putting it in our pantry. The pantry challenge may be the time I figure that out.

    Great video with lots of info for the beginner. My challenge is stocking very low carb shelf stable foods as that is how we need to eat. Lots of meats and fish, vegetables, broths and good fats. It's so much more expensive than beans and grains. Sale's are a blessing. Would love to hear what other low-carb folks are stocking.

      Freeze dried pulled pork & ground beef (ex: Thrive Life). Canned chicken, salmon, sardines, herring, tuna.

      You can, can your own meat. They make electric pressure canners (not instant pot, but an electric canner). You can get sale meat and can it yourself. Shelf-stable meat 😊

    I'm happy to find your channel! I loved the sections on pasta and rice. In 2019 my niece and I took a 3 week trip to Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. One of the things I planned were a few inexpensive B&B stays with kitchenettes. I packed garlic salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Right when I got to Italy I bought some olive oil and in various villages we visited we would buy local pasta. I would use those few ingredients to make what I called "peasant pasta" for simple, affordable meals throughout our trip. These were fun memories for us and the pasta was a simple nutritious meal. 🙂 I also here on my little hobby farm like to do my version of Golden Rice. It's white rice, a couple of my girl's eggs, turmeric and some dried seaweed. It's been a healthy, inexpensive lunch on many days. I look forward to following more of your wealth of knowledge! Thank you!

    Mary you are a treasure, I have been stocking up on since 2021. I’m diabetic, I need to know about nutrition. I have learned through your videos how to make much of my food. I portion it out and freeze things.I also make sure that I cook my food before I freeze it that way if the electricity goes off I’m not panicking that I will loose food.

    Migraine, yes . I've had them since childhood, each time I would eat hotdogs. I've found that nitrates spur on migraines for me so look into lunch meat, processed meats & wines with sulfates can affect those who can't handle nitrates too . 🙏 I hope this helps .

I render my own tallow for soap making and its just so useful to have on hand. I have some that I've rendered and hot packed into jars. I just opened a 3 year old jar and its just as perfect as the day it went into the jar.

You keep everything Fresh in my mind and you keep me from sinking into normalcy bias and over spending on the Wrong (unhealthy or boxed) foods.

    Also Dollar Tree sells boxed milk that typically has about 8 months shelf life. It comes in non fat, low fat, and whole.

    Another great video. You are so kind and so professional and so practically helpful. It's been shocking grocery shopping lately because I remember process. It used to be get a pound of dried beans for about $1 per pound and now it's usually $2 per pound or more. I'm so glad you mentioned the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). If I ingest it, it affects me greatly, the best I can describe it is I appear intoxicated. Once a friend had to drive my car home for me because I accidentally didn't check ingredients on a store bought cake. I love Mexican Coke, probably have one a couple of times a year. I hate when my friends are sick and drink regular ginger ale or lemon-lime soda to settle their stomach.

      The "regular" soda helps quite a bit with nausea. Diet will just make it worse due to the artificial sweenters that are actually pretty toxic. Also, interesting to know about the corn syrup as I've often described myself as getting " sugar drunk" when I have certain things.

      @@crystald3655 yes that’s a great way to describe it, sugar drunk. I had to quit sodas over 20 years ago for this reason. Now there are many “no HFCS” sodas that are made with real sugar. I can drink those, though I still don’t drink soda very often.

Mine started with hormone changes, and I have been able to figure out some of my triggers- dairy, msg and stress are the biggies for me. I’m glad you said you don’t get them a lot! They are not fun!

    Oxtail. A very traditional and very inexpensive cut of meat across several cultures. Huge in Jamaican, Central American, and Carribiane cultures. High-end restaurants started using it, and now it is painfully expensive Real shame. Thank you for this informative and helpful video.

      Jenny Can Cook has a great recipe for chocolate cake that uses no eggs and no milk and no butter. It's very good and hard to mess it up.

    I’m lucky enough to work where we get a 25% discount on one transaction once at the end of the year. I save up and do a MASSIVE shopping trip and try to stock up enough to last us until the following big shopping trip. I still keep my eye out for sales during the whole year tho. I do buy a lot of certain things at a time doing it this way but then chances are decent that I won’t have to buy more for a whole year or more. Let me tell you how much this came in handy in 2020 and seeing first hand how people were acting over toilet paper! We literally had to have several associates guard the pallets as they were being stocked 😳. I didn’t have to worry tho because I always STAY stocked up on things like that. By the time I needed to restock my home some of the craziness had died down 🙌.

    Thanks for sharing. I only get headaches when I haven't eaten anything in time. Mostly happens at work. I do sometimes get motion sickness. Healing Scents Anti Nausea/Motion Sickness inhaler helps for sudden cases. Ginger products help with nausea. A sea band also helps but it requires placing on the right spot which is past the wrist. I mostly drink water with a splash of cranberry juice. I drink one coffee or sweet iced tea per day. I also drink Water Kefir and Kombucha. May be closer to getting a place for the three of us. Found some rent-to-own homes with affordable monthly payments. Just have to find one near transportation to work.

    Stewed fruit is called compot, and instead of water we use Kosher sweet wine. You can can it also.

    I love it, thank you so much for such a sensible system! :) I've had migraines all my adult life. I'm so glad yours are rare. Many things help with nausea, chamomile tea, peppermint tea, ginger ale, ice water sipped, saltines nibbled, a piece of plain toast (nothing on it, eaten warm) or any combination of things that doesn't turn your stomach to think about ..there are a lot that can help settle down the nausea.

    I don't know if you realize that baking powder has corn in it. My husbands worst allergy is corm and you can make baking powder with 2 parts cream of tarter and 1 part baking soda. I am glad you know about the Mexican soda. Many Mexican products can be found without corn where most regular brands contain corn. Unfortunately, Goya now puts corn in their bouillon where they didn't used to.

    It’s not the sugar it’s the extra caffeine. As a migraine sufferer I do take prescription meds that said, the meds are basically the same thing with 1 added ingredient. You can use 2 extra strength Tylenol and 1 Nodoz with Coke (any caffeinated soda). You can also use 2 Midol with Coke, Pepsi or Dr.Pepper. Afterward get in the hottest shower you can tolerate and breathe the steam through your nose. For the nausea under any circumstances really I use Tazo Zen tea with 2 medallions of fresh ginger and honey to sweeten. It works great. (If you blend teas you can make your own. Look up the ingredients on the box). Otherwise, I’ll go for the old stand by Canada Dry ginger ale.

    I love sardines straight from the can. I like to add spicy mustard or regular mustard on top. My grandparents always made salmon patties and I would eat them up. So delicious.
    My dad use to make a cream tuna on toast when I was young. It was can tuna, can green peas, flour, milk salt and pepper cooked. Then would pour over toast for a meal.
    Mary what’s your take on the Pink Himalayan Salt from the Dollar Tree? It says it’s all 100% natural.

    I had problems with headaches like this until we learned that my neck was broken. Installation of hardware and plates helped tremendously. That being said, what I learned is that caffeine boosts the properties of some types of pain killers. Eventually, I stoped using the over the counter products (and also mfg opioids) and relied upon poppy seed tea which contains all of the pain ingredients used in those OTC products. They add caffeine to one of the main opioid pills for this reason. Add a sprinkling of coffee grounds to the seeds within your steeping container or baggie to boost the pain relieving properties. Just fyi, poppy seed tea is not regulated and safe to use.

    In 1954 a classmate from England showed me the recipe for baked beans over bread as a snack after school. I still enjoy that flavorful meal to this day. 65 years ago 🌺!!!

    Blue ice gel kept fridge cold rubbed on forehead.Lay 20 mins in dark area will break headache but wash off gel well before going outdoors.❤

    I haven't listened to the whole video yet, but KNOW i will enjoy every minute! I just from an RV to a house. I will be setting up my 4 corners. I have a freezer and i used it while in the RV (It was outside!), but will have better access to it to be able to use it much more efficiently. Love your downloads.
