I got the Tecsun branded S2000 about three weeks ago. I’ve had incredible results with the built-in whip, a longwire, and an MLA-30+. I really enjoy DXing with it. I’ve been running it with batteries to reduce potential noise and they last forever in this thing.
I had the Eton E1 years back and just couldn't handle the ripping paper overtone to it. Been on the look out for a Satalit 750 or Elite 750 for the right price. I'll have to do the saved search as you did. Something is bound to come up for a good price.
OMG "arguably the best short wave, or general coverage receiver you can buy on the market today". That's a big statement. This is a tinker toy radio in comparison to a IC-R8600, that is still sold today.
Great radio, very familiar as a Grundig previously, as others have mentioned. 91.5 MHz FM would give you something different in the UK or at least in South Yorkshire, that frequency we receive BBC Radio 3 (the arts, classical music network) LW in Europe is almost coming to an end. RTE Radio 1 (Ireland) on 252kHz closed sometime last year and BBC Radio 4 on Long Wave 198kHz is to close in March 2024. The end of an era, as the frequency for BBC on LW has been around since the 1930s! Also the BBC on LW was instrumental in WWII, for sending messages to our Allies across Europe. Before Radio 4, it carried BBC Radio 2 (our MoR network) among others.
Warning: The 6v DC power supply requires a non-standard Center Pin Negative Polarity. If you utilize a Positive Center Pin Polarity power supply by accident it'll be toast as the board lacks reverse polarity protection. Nice set though Eric, despite the critics. I own two myself. Very much enjoy your content.📻
I toasted mine by using the wrong power supply. Do you have any suggestions on how i can find someone to repair it. Also the #1 on the keypad died shortly after I bought the radio. I cannot input any thing that has the #1.... no light, no beep, nothing....
You gotta try a CCrane Justice antenna in addition to the AM rotating antenna. When you get the Justice try to obtain a 3mm plug adapter to plug in on the rotator antenna. You’ll absolutely LOVE the performance. I did this on my Grundig Satellit 750 which is the same exact set.
@@raymondward5629 I have seen multiple posts on various sites about the center pin negative polarity issue and that is definitely shying me away from the Eton Elite 750. I’m a relative newbie and am wondering which C. Crane is comparable to the Eton? I have the Skywave and it’s a great little radio but I’m ready for something bigger. Thanks!
If you can keep holt tight the adapter on the 750 you shouldn’t have any problem. I’ve always enjoyed a radio with bass/treble and amplified sound far and away from those that don’t.
I have had one for a few years and agree that this is overall a really good shortwave receiver, is quite sensitive, and audio is really clear and loud. I have it currently hooked to my scanner antenna (certainly not tuned for the HF bands) and receive even in the tight valley where I live; it works surprisingly well for both SW and FM. A few complaints, one, I am not a fan of lightweight plastic for base units - maybe showing my age, but I like heft and durability. VFO knob, as much as I use it, I wish it had a much better control and knob. But my biggest complaint, and I have yet to open it up and to implement a solution - if using external power and there is a power outage, it does not fall back to battery power for time and alarm retention. Once internal capacitors discharge, clocks are lost. I do not use memory features so I do not know if that is lost on power loss with the plug in. Power outages are a frequent part of life where I am in Western NC mountains. The loss of clock is irritating, but certainly not a deterrent for purchase. One caution, the power plug is 6V and is reverse polarity from 99% of everything else on the market. I have mine on a 12 bus powering other gear, but use an inexpensive 12v-6v DC-DC converter for this receiver. I was relieved when I double checked polarity markings on the connector when assembling. Thanks for all you do!
I,Have The GRUNDIG Elite 750 Radio If I,Were To Sell It ,It Would Not Be Sold For ,$100.00 I,Have Only Used It Three Times And That Was In The Apartment Where I,m At. I,Have A Kenwood R 2000 That I Use More ,.
I've had the Tecsun S-2000 version (same radio, different branding I gather) for a couple of years. A really great, comprehensive allrounder that is very hard to fault IMHO. And despite comments, I'd suggest the retail price is actually very reasonable. Would thoroughly recommend it as a "one stop shop" radio receiver for the semi-serious enthusiast and a handy backup/"quick look-see radio receiver" for the dedicated enthusiast with a selection of Icom/Yaesu/Kenwood etc etc...
I have the exact same radio, branded as a Grundig model Satilit 750. Bought it maybe 15 - 20 year back at Frys Electronics. Great FM reception with installed antennas. AM is not to bad. Air and SW air usable but would greatly improve with the right external antenna. It's a reasonably rugged unit, though some of the knobs are easily knocked off with rough handling. Popped back on OK. Most of the time it's in the back yard where my wife uses it to listen to Dodger ballgames.
Rip off eats batteries tecsun pl 330 just as good more filters put it your pocket 60 dollars I had the overpriced grundig you say it didn't need long wire wow it would be like gold dust if that was the case
I have one a few months, mine works great across all the ham bands. I have it wired up to a 10’ brass curtain rod above my desk an it has very good overall ears with that in all bands. The slightly wobbly dial is the only clinker on there, but it works fine. Good filter too.
Nice idea. Have one near mine. Wonder how it would do if you used speaker wire and coiled it around that curtain rod for a portion of its length like a mobile antenna but now sideways.
A good radio but it has short comings. The wide and narrow bandwidth positions are not the greatest. Too wide is the worst thing. I don't care for the AGC action either. For best AGC action riding the RF gain and volume is required. The reception of SSB using the BFO could be better. Why not a dedicated USB/LSB switch position? And while they were at it why not add a CW position and filter? The nice points are the overall styling and size. So much handier then the Grundig/Eton/Tecsun 800. The metal knobs are great and I liked the rotatable AM antenna. The display and backlight are very nice. All in all a good radio but I don't think it's value is in the 400-500 dollar range.
Well first of all, given everything that's now happening, people's highest priority is to buy or if necessary build a top of the line TUBE type radio. People should be spending thier money on a working or repairable R-390, R-392, R-388 or a Hammerlund Super Pro 600 or a National HRO 50 or Sixty Second choices would be other Hammerlund's especially the 180 or 180 JX, or Certian Hallicrafters can be OK If you're looking for a solid state radio a lot of recent military super radios are available Like discontinued Collins, Harris, Raytheon etc There are a group of British And European military grade receivers and transmitters both tube and ruggedized solid state.
The problem with that is many people would not have the know how to do that. It is sad that many people don't know how to work on that kind of stuff or build it.
I fried mine a few weeks ago by using wrong polarity AC supply. Apparently many folks did this stupid thing . A few videos about it on YT. . Loved the ergonomics, but not a great performer . Only radio I ever loved was my AOR 1000.
That's overpriced. It lack filters so it'll tune in undersired signals. For this price, it is humiliating to have an old Sony ICF-SW7600G or SW7600GR and find out that it performs better in this regard. A better and cheaper alternative to the S2000/750 is a Tecsun 990x. You have a very sensitive, sellective that you can carry everywhere.
I have 2 short wave radios for a direct comparison: 1.) The Tescun S-2000 (Eton 750) with an Tescun An-48x antenna below the roof top and 2.) the Tescun PL-990x with an Tescun AN-03L antenna in my living room. The S-2000 is a very nice and stylish radio with a very good sound but imo the PL-990x is the better shortwave and ultra short wave (in English: FM) receiver. The problem I have with the S-2000 is that I have sometimes a brilliant reception and hours late its poor with lots of noise and other side effects. My be its an antenna problem. I'm still learning. In the end I love it too. By the way: Operating/Tuning the S-2000 helped me to understand the PL-990x better.
My Eton Elite 750 has never worked. I am sure that it is my fault, I just can't figure out how to get the volume to work. Any ideas? I watched every You Tube video that I could find. Everything seems to work properly, just no Volume.
These radios do feel cheap and plasticky until you put in the D cells, then they get quite heavy. They do receive very well though and I like that all the bands have inputs for external antennas even the medium wave BCB. What I don't like about it is the lack of a fine tuning control that makes it hard to tune in SSB on shortwave.
hi, i am new to this field, have not gotten my ham license yet, but have a question for you: can this radio be used to listen to the military Morse bands used in Eastern Europe and other places around the world? my military background was intercepting morse code from Russia, eastern europe in the early 80's. would i be able to emulate this work on this setup? thanks
Better shortwave reception than my Yaesu 5000. Very impressive. Been looking at one of these as a pure receiver for a long time, I might just go for it. If I can find a deal like yours especially.
I bought a used Grundig Satellit 800 off of Ebay years ago and still have it. The radio is excellent too but even used is was higher priced verses the Eton Elite 750. The radio did not come with a power supply block and I did find one but the power supply block is noisy on SW and a linear power supply would need to be used with the Grundig Satellit 800 radio. Finding the original power supply is hard to find and that's the only drawback to that radio.
Apparently, Grundig did not put enough filtering in the radio's external DC supply and People have complained about it over the years. The switching power supplies are the problem showing up when using several of the Ham bands and lower frequencies. Using a pack of D-Cells gets rid of the noise but that radio will flatten D-Cells fast with it's current draw. A Linear power supply solves the RF noise problem with that radio. @@FarpointFarms
I disagree. SDR radios are not good radios. You are stuck using a laptop, something I hate to lug around, and the units are usually not that great at receive compared to a dedicated radio.
After finding your channel a while back I became interested in all things radio! I was able to locate an Eaton 750 still in the box, from a private seller and picked it up for $200. Not as good of a deal as yours but I didn’t think I did too bad. I haven’t had much time to fool with it but hopefully I will be able to soon. (my youngest is a senior in high school) Keep the great videos coming!!!
I got my Satellit 800 at Radio Shack in the early 2000's for a 100 bucks . It was a display model with no box and they threw in auniversal power supply because the original was lost
This is a OK. Radio being a old ham guy a couple of buds bought them and found the band spread a bit wide and both had a wobbly tuning knob . For the cost you can for a bit more new get. Icom Kenwood or a Grundig which are both much better receivers .
Great buy Eric, I have always wanted one. But am really enjoying my Software Defined Radio and using a remote connection I can listen to it on my laptop anywhere in the house!
I’m trying to figure out how to do the ground wire, can not figure a clean way to run both wires out of the house and one going to the ground and another up in the air somewhere, haven’t found a video about that yet.
If you ask me, it's overpriced for what it offers, the price it goes for there's absolutely no reason for it's shortcomings that other cheaper receivers don't have an issue with (filters, ect). I'd rather pick up a PL330 than the eton 750. More expensive doesn't equal better, that line of thinking needs to go away, the Eton Elite HD is testament to that. A Eton Elite Executive is a far better buy than the 750, and a PL330 is an even better buy.
I picked up the original Grundig 750 for an astounding $20 at a yard sale! No way I would pay what is being charged for a new one. If you want an excellent quality receiver find a Drake R8 or R8b. Then you will have the best that leaves the rest in static! Btw, the switch on the side selects either internal rod antenna or the external inputs.
@FarpointFarms ok. Thanks for the reply. I got an old dx302 that something was wrong with it when I got it. Was looking on ebay at some working versions of it and the 750
Good demonstration. Looks like nice quality set made in the old way of a good portable am shortwave set. like in the tradition of old Zeniths and Hallicrafters . looks like those expensive Sonys they use to make too Decent portable AM and short wave set. Looks nice. Thank you for demonstration .. Anthony ham radio ve4akf
very nice radio think they started off as a grundig s wave radio i have the stalite 800. grundig which had prtenered up with drake that used to make ham radio gear. then you strated to see etons which look similar. but fun radios to play with but that model has more bells an whistles
This radio does not have air band. You were tuning longwave which is used in europe and elsewhere for broadcast instead of our medium wave AM. Air band is about 119-136 mhz which this radio does not tune. Longwave is used over here mostly for beacons for airport in CW mode.
Weird questions....have you lost weight? I am new to SW radios and found you through a youtube search along with others. Saw some old videos and just saw this. Looks like whatever you're doing is working....not saying you were fat btw! 😂
If anyone thinks this radio is alittle to expensive the Eton Elite Executive Satellite Radio is alot cheaper and has pretty much the same performance plus some extras that this does not have !
I would choose a PL330 over the Eton Elite Executive. I own both and the PL330 is a far better receiver, you can at least calibrate SSB to be on frequency. The Eton Elite Executive (EEE) while a decent receiver, it's way way more expensive (anywhere from $140-$180) than the PL330 ($$60-$80) and doesn't offer much more (About the only thing the EEE has that the PL330 doesn't is RDS, and air band), and with the PL330 you can use an external antenna jack for medium wave unlike the EEE. The EEEs AM sync also doesn't work that well while on the PL330 it actually works well.
Hi ,great review. I’m thinking about buying this radio. I have very little experience with radios so I have a couple questions about the connectors for the external wire. Do you need the ground wire hooked up all the time or just when your using the sw wire. And what kind of plug goes in the lw/mw directional antenna ?
Somebody said that the narrow filter is too narrow and wide is too wide without a compromise. Does the telescopic antenna rotate to receive horizontal polarization on USW? Strange that they went for an expensive, disposable D-cell battery while other Tecsun radios have a lithium battery. Why do no radios, even the more "serious" ones go above 30 MHz?
Recently found your channel and enjoying the radio videos had a CB in the 70’s and and now I’m getting interested in short wave will have to get something less expensive to start with keep the videos coming
I'll stick to my TS - 590-S , it actually transmitts. 50 Khz to 54mhz. I have a licensed VHF repeater that talks Chicago to Milwaukee to Rockford. Everything is same as my TS - 590S. Except mine will transmit. The other advantage is I have antennas outside. Not a radio mounted antenna. Those stations are in the Carolinas. A very large group of religious stations. Can you pick up WWV ? all 4 frequencys 2.5 and 5 and 10 then 15 Mhz ?
I have the exact radio, but it's a Grundig Satelit 750, it was my Dad's. After he passed away I've been getting his junk mail, I believe he got from Hammaker Schlemmer (spelling?). They showed it at $600, and I can't get anything but static except on AM & FM with it.
Is the long wave air band in the states used the same as in OZ for NDB radio compass usually has morse ident of location A lot have closed here now i assume the rely on GPS now days We had one just out of town 257kh indent RUG01 dismantled now but 2 nice towers still on the hill The perfect radio shack 🤔😊
When I should buy a radio it should be the TECSUN S-2000 It has a 455 kHz ZF-output which can be used for ex. as DRM-converter. And what I am missing is an ETM/ATM function. That is also not available on the Tecsun S-2000, but is available on cheaper Tecsun's
Hello, What you are calling air band (LW) I never get anything either except when at the coast, NJ shore, FL coast. Next time I go to the nearby Bahamas I will test the band outside US. I would think long wave would be for short distance ground wave and not for propagation. That Eton looks sweet. How much are they? Thanks so much. Arnie Gibbs

Overpriced hype. Not great build quality, meter sucks, sloppy tuning knob, vol. control iffy. Maybe $99. Is okay, not what it sells for now.

hi, i am new to this field, have not gotten my ham license yet, but have a question for you: can this radio be used to listen to the military Morse bands used in Eastern Europe and other places around the world? my military background was intercepting morse code from Russia, eastern europe in the early 80's. would i be able to emulate this work on this setup? thanks
Yes.
Better shortwave reception than my Yaesu 5000. Very impressive. Been looking at one of these as a pure receiver for a long time, I might just go for it. If I can find a deal like yours especially.
if you can find that kind of deal, go for it
Very poor demo of ssb quality.
Sorry to disappoint you
who was to know-YOU for sure/how far have you talked/boogie woogie/and have a cold glass of ice tea/fun-fun-fun/thanks much
Roger that.
I’ve always wondered about this radio, now you’ve sold me! Great video!!!
This radio is also known as Tecsun S-2000. 👍
I bought mine a number of years ago as the Grundig Satellit.
Yeah,you lucked out for $100!! 😏
Looked on Amazon last night, 😮 $500.
When I saw the price of $100, I hit buy so fast. I asked for forgiveness from my wife after.
I have 2 of the Grundig versions. Exact the same radio. I love them!
Cool-- thanks for sharing
I bought a used Grundig Satellit 800 off of Ebay years ago and still have it. The radio is excellent too but even used is was higher priced verses the Eton Elite 750.
The radio did not come with a power supply block and I did find one but the power supply block is noisy on SW and a linear power supply would need to be used
with the Grundig Satellit 800 radio. Finding the original power supply is hard to find and that's the only drawback to that radio.
I wasn't aware of that. So u der battery power, it's quite?
Apparently, Grundig did not put enough filtering in the radio's external DC supply and People have complained about it over the years. The switching
power supplies are the problem showing up when using several of the Ham bands and lower frequencies. Using a pack of D-Cells gets rid of the noise
but that radio will flatten D-Cells fast with it's current draw. A Linear power supply solves the RF noise problem with that radio.
@@FarpointFarms
@@ezl8002are they easy to find?
Why is there so much static? I just ordered one. I have smaller radio sounds like this I payed 100 dollars!
It is an older technology that is inherent to having static- I am sorry you dont like it
Excellent radio, I bought one in 2012, with an external antenna, the reception is excellent.
I love mine as well!
Not very good receiver, lots of interference from all kind of man made qrm. Wanted signals are lost...
That has not been my experience with this one. It's super sensitive and the only noise I hear is from my off grid solar setup.
Rag-chewing apparently not subject to copyright. 😂
indeed
Is there a difference between the Eton Elite 750 vs Tecsun S2000? Thanks. I see on line the Tecsun generally goes for $100+ more
Why do you need this…???…With respect…what’s the point…????
Ummmm, to listen to radio. What else would you do with it?
Save your money and buy an SDR. I had the tecsun and it was DEAF.
Great deal, even back then!
This is a OK. Radio being a old ham guy a couple of buds bought them and found the band spread a bit wide and both had a wobbly tuning knob . For the cost you can for a bit more new get. Icom Kenwood or a Grundig which are both much better receivers .
I've been happy with mine.
Thank you for taking the time to make and post this excellent review on the *Eton Elite 750 Shortwave Radio* ...
Great buy Eric, I have always wanted one. But am really enjoying my Software Defined Radio and using a remote connection I can listen to it on my laptop anywhere in the house!
that is a very valid point for using your laptop
I’m trying to figure out how to do the ground wire, can not figure a clean way to run both wires out of the house and one going to the ground and another up in the air somewhere, haven’t found a video about that yet.
I'll see if I can make a decent grounding video here.
@@FarpointFarms ♥️
If you ask me, it's overpriced for what it offers, the price it goes for there's absolutely no reason for it's shortcomings that other cheaper receivers don't have an issue with (filters, ect). I'd rather pick up a PL330 than the eton 750. More expensive doesn't equal better, that line of thinking needs to go away, the Eton Elite HD is testament to that. A Eton Elite Executive is a far better buy than the 750, and a PL330 is an even better buy.
I might buy a used one today for $200.
Sounds like a great idea
I picked up the original Grundig 750 for an astounding $20 at a yard sale! No way I would pay what is being charged for a new one. If you want an excellent quality receiver find a Drake R8 or R8b. Then you will have the best that leaves the rest in static! Btw, the switch on the side selects either internal rod antenna or the external inputs.
How does this compare to the realistic DX 300? Which one would you say is better receive? Better audio?
This is a better radio, but the Realistic sure is better looking!
@FarpointFarms ok. Thanks for the reply. I got an old dx302 that something was wrong with it when I got it.
Was looking on ebay at some working versions of it and the 750
Great radio, I don't care what 1 particular UA-cam channel says.
I wasn't aware there was anyone bad mouthing it. Hard to imagine.
Thanks for watching!
Can you connect an external antenna, Wilson 1000 ?
Yes, but something larger than a 100 will really help it. Think 300 feet of wire.
very nice radio think they started off as a grundig s wave radio i have the stalite 800. grundig which had prtenered up with drake that used to make ham radio gear. then you strated to see etons which look similar. but fun radios to play with but that model has more bells an whistles
Thank you for your review, refreshing to hear a positive review for a change on a great radio.
On shortwave I could not hear very much
Sorry to hear that, when I was in Florida near the coast, the number of SW channels were crazy
I have! about 45 pounds in the past 6 months Thanks!
not a fair test put on a long wire let’s hear what its got
You need to set up a long wire antenna or better yet an outdoor PA0RDT active antenna for to receive LW better than what you're getting on there.
I have this radio (with Tecsun S-2000 brand) and use it with 4 D-batteries which work for ages.
It needs a rechargeable battery mod done.
I am sure that there is someone working on that now. That would be pretty cool
Weather?
No.
It is a receiver not a transceiver
sorry, I misspoke
If I had to listen to that I'd never listen again
Your loss.
Farpoint farms you should set the clock to utc for shortwave
Not a bad idea.
What’s utc?
Way over priced
With the current inflation rates what they are, everything is overpriced.
very true what your say and your very lucky to get it at price you did I've see this radio up to $600.
What an amazing radio. Now I want it more than ever. I will keep searching for a used one. Because its so expensive
Nice radio and nice Amber illumination
thanks
Hi ,great review. I’m thinking about buying this radio. I have very little experience with radios so I have a couple questions about the connectors for the external wire. Do you need the ground wire hooked up all the time or just when your using the sw wire. And what kind of plug goes in the lw/mw directional antenna ?
It helps to have it hooked up all the time, but it's not needed. It will lower the noise floor if used. The connection is a PL259.
There just isn't anything up there past 30mhz. I pick up some odd signals now and again, but nothing worth the extra gear.
Recently found your channel and enjoying the radio videos had a CB in the 70’s and and now I’m getting interested in short wave will have to get something less expensive to start with keep the videos coming
You will enjoy shortwave.
If you ever decided to sell the radio let me know lol
Great radio
Will do!
Can you pick up
WWV ? all 4 frequencys 2.5 and 5 and 10 then 15 Mhz ?
Yes, I have a active loop outside so I get a lot of distant stations.
I broke down and ordered one. Tiny discount for black Friday for $360. It should be here today. I can't wait.
I have the exact radio, but it's a Grundig Satelit 750, it was my Dad's. After he passed away I've been getting his junk mail, I believe he got from Hammaker Schlemmer (spelling?). They showed it at $600, and I can't get anything but static except on AM & FM with it.
That is a great radio. I would try setting it up with an external antenna to increase it's reception.
Is the long wave air band in the states used the same as in OZ for NDB radio compass usually has morse ident of location
A lot have closed here now i assume the rely on GPS now days
We had one just out of town 257kh indent RUG01 dismantled now but 2 nice towers still on the hill
The perfect radio shack 🤔😊
Hmm. I am not sure. Anyone else want to chime in?
When I should buy a radio it should be the TECSUN S-2000
It has a 455 kHz ZF-output which can be used for ex. as DRM-converter.
And what I am missing is an ETM/ATM function. That is also not available on the Tecsun S-2000, but is available on cheaper Tecsun's
Interesting. Good to know!
CCrane SW comparison?
If I can get my hands on a CCrane I might just have to make one
Hello,
What you are calling air band (LW) I never get anything either except when at the coast, NJ shore, FL coast. Next time I go to the nearby Bahamas I will test the band outside US. I would think long wave would be for short distance ground wave and not for propagation. That Eton looks sweet. How much are they? Thanks so much.
Arnie Gibbs
I have never been able to pickup anything on longwave either. These sell for nearly $400 new, but you can get them for far less, if you look om ebay.
Can you pickup airliners
Yes you can
If you put an external antenna on it, what would you recommend?
The MLA-30+ is perfect.
I am looking for a radio like this one but I require VHF marine capability. Does anyone know what type of radio I should buy?
Hmm... Not sure. Anyone else?
Yeah, that unit has always been on my wish list. Price is a bit too rich for my pocketbook. Glad you got a good deal on one. 👍
You and me both! I could not have afforded this at full price
Why do I get the feeling that this radio has a very tiny circuit board that does it all.
great review man! new sub here ;) ham radio technician but also a vintrage gaming lover ;) appreciate it
thanks for the sub!
