I have had one for a few years and agree that this is overall a really good shortwave receiver, is quite sensitive, and audio is really clear and loud. I have it currently hooked to my scanner antenna (certainly not tuned for the HF bands) and receive even in the tight valley where I live; it works surprisingly well for both SW and FM. A few complaints, one, I am not a fan of lightweight plastic for base units - maybe showing my age, but I like heft and durability. VFO knob, as much as I use it, I wish it had a much better control and knob. But my biggest complaint, and I have yet to open it up and to implement a solution - if using external power and there is a power outage, it does not fall back to battery power for time and alarm retention. Once internal capacitors discharge, clocks are lost. I do not use memory features so I do not know if that is lost on power loss with the plug in. Power outages are a frequent part of life where I am in Western NC mountains. The loss of clock is irritating, but certainly not a deterrent for purchase. One caution, the power plug is 6V and is reverse polarity from 99% of everything else on the market. I have mine on a 12 bus powering other gear, but use an inexpensive 12v-6v DC-DC converter for this receiver. I was relieved when I double checked polarity markings on the connector when assembling. Thanks for all you do!
I have one a few months, mine works great across all the ham bands. I have it wired up to a 10’ brass curtain rod above my desk an it has very good overall ears with that in all bands. The slightly wobbly dial is the only clinker on there, but it works fine. Good filter too.
Nice idea. Have one near mine. Wonder how it would do if you used speaker wire and coiled it around that curtain rod for a portion of its length like a mobile antenna but now sideways.
Thanks for the video. It certainly looks like you got a steal on that radio. I know you will have a blast with that one. I just got a Tecsun pl 680 yesterday.
Great buy Eric, I have always wanted one. But am really enjoying my Software Defined Radio and using a remote connection I can listen to it on my laptop anywhere in the house!
I've had the Tecsun S-2000 version (same radio, different branding I gather) for a couple of years. A really great, comprehensive allrounder that is very hard to fault IMHO. And despite comments, I'd suggest the retail price is actually very reasonable. Would thoroughly recommend it as a "one stop shop" radio receiver for the semi-serious enthusiast and a handy backup/"quick look-see radio receiver" for the dedicated enthusiast with a selection of Icom/Yaesu/Kenwood etc etc...
Great radio, very familiar as a Grundig previously, as others have mentioned. 91.5 MHz FM would give you something different in the UK or at least in South Yorkshire, that frequency we receive BBC Radio 3 (the arts, classical music network) LW in Europe is almost coming to an end. RTE Radio 1 (Ireland) on 252kHz closed sometime last year and BBC Radio 4 on Long Wave 198kHz is to close in March 2024. The end of an era, as the frequency for BBC on LW has been around since the 1930s! Also the BBC on LW was instrumental in WWII, for sending messages to our Allies across Europe. Before Radio 4, it carried BBC Radio 2 (our MoR network) among others.
Warning: The 6v DC power supply requires a non-standard Center Pin Negative Polarity. If you utilize a Positive Center Pin Polarity power supply by accident it'll be toast as the board lacks reverse polarity protection. Nice set though Eric, despite the critics. I own two myself. Very much enjoy your content.📻
I toasted mine by using the wrong power supply. Do you have any suggestions on how i can find someone to repair it. Also the #1 on the keypad died shortly after I bought the radio. I cannot input any thing that has the #1.... no light, no beep, nothing....
You gotta try a CCrane Justice antenna in addition to the AM rotating antenna. When you get the Justice try to obtain a 3mm plug adapter to plug in on the rotator antenna. You’ll absolutely LOVE the performance. I did this on my Grundig Satellit 750 which is the same exact set.
@@raymondward5629 I have seen multiple posts on various sites about the center pin negative polarity issue and that is definitely shying me away from the Eton Elite 750. Better shortwave reception than my Yaesu 5000. Very impressive. Been looking at one of these as a pure receiver for a long time, I might just go for it. If I can find a deal like yours especially.
I bought a used Grundig Satellit 800 off of Ebay years ago and still have it. The radio is excellent too but even used is was higher priced verses the Eton Elite 750. Apparently, Grundig did not put enough filtering in the radio's external DC supply and People have complained about it over the years. The switching power supplies are the problem showing up when using several of the Ham bands and lower frequencies. Using a pack of D-Cells gets rid of the noise but that radio will flatten D-Cells fast with it's current draw. A Linear power supply solves the RF noise problem with that radio. @@FarpointFarms
I got mine, the Grundig version, back in 2009. It was on Amazon for $249 and a Lightning Deal popped up for $149 and I grabbed mine NIB. Sits above my workbench and has a carefully placed external long wire that runs outside. Works great on all bands, and I listen to SW and AIR most of the time.
Love this radio. Use it with a long wire or a PKLoop. Lot of money but you get a lot of radio. Have the Tecsun S2000 version. Same radio different brand name. Spent many an hour tuning this beauty. Nice video too.😊😊😊
I’m trying to figure out how to do the ground wire, can not figure a clean way to run both wires out of the house and one going to the ground and another up in the air somewhere, haven’t found a video about that yet.
I have the Satalit 750 by Grundig. It is truly a fantastic radio. I have hooked it up to a 70 ft external wire antenna that is strung up a tree. Not as good reception as some of my ham radios, but way more bands of frequencies available. Great review BTW.
Somebody said that the narrow filter is too narrow and wide is too wide without a compromise. Does the telescopic antenna rotate to receive horizontal polarization on USW? Strange that they went for an expensive, disposable D-cell battery while other Tecsun radios have a lithium battery. Why do no radios, even the more "serious" ones go above 30 MHz?
I have the exact same radio, branded as a Grundig model Satilit 750. Bought it maybe 15 - 20 year back at Frys Electronics. Great FM reception with installed antennas. AM is not to bad. Air and SW air usable but would greatly improve with the right external antenna. It's a reasonably rugged unit, though some of the knobs are easily knocked off with rough handling. Popped back on OK. Most of the time it's in the back yard where my wife uses it to listen to Dodger ballgames.

I had the Eton E1 years back and just couldn't handle the ripping paper overtone to it. Been on the look out for a Satalit 750 or Elite 750 for the right price. I'll have to do the saved search as you did. Something is bound to come up for a good price.
When you get the opportunity, get the new Tecsun version .. S-2200x/reminds me of the old Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium, only smaller like the 750 but much better than both. Your in for a treat if you don't already have one. .. wow
Try any of the general coverage rigs like the current crop of SDrs. Miles above and used prices are reasonable. Icom 7300 makes a phenomenal SW rig. Now if you want the holy Grail, the Watkins Johnson receivers are next level.
Is the long wave air band in the states used the same as in OZ for NDB radio compass usually has morse ident of location A lot have closed here now i assume the rely on GPS now days We had one just out of town 257kh indent RUG01 dismantled now but 2 nice towers still on the hill The perfect radio shack 🤔😊
My Eton Elite 750 has never worked. I am sure that it is my fault, I just can't figure out how to get the volume to work. Any ideas? I watched every You Tube video that I could find. Everything seems to work properly, just no Volume.
When I should buy a radio it should be the TECSUN S-2000 It has a 455 kHz ZF-output which can be used for ex. as DRM-converter. And what I am missing is an ETM/ATM function. That is also not available on the Tecsun S-2000, but is available on cheaper Tecsun's
very nice radio think they started off as a grundig s wave radio i have the stalite 800. grundig which had prtenered up with drake that used to make ham radio gear. then you strated to see etons which look similar. but fun radios to play with but that model has more bells an whistles
I picked up the original Grundig 750 for an astounding $20 at a yard sale! No way I would pay what is being charged for a new one. If you want an excellent quality receiver find a Drake R8 or R8b. Then you will have the best that leaves the rest in static! Btw, the switch on the side selects either internal rod antenna or the external inputs.
Hello, What you are calling air band (LW) I never get anything either except when at the coast, NJ shore, FL coast. Next time I go to the nearby Bahamas I will test the band outside US. I would think long wave would be for short distance ground wave and not for propagation. That Eton looks sweet. How much are they? Thanks so much. Arnie Gibbs
@FarpointFarms I also like the radiosback that you demonstrate. I Ibelieve it was the dx 394. I like the old radio is better. I wouldn't mind trying to find one myself. But it has to be in a 1 condition or next to it.
hi, i am new to this field, have not gotten my ham license yet, but have a question for you: can this radio be used to listen to the military Morse bands used in Eastern Europe and other places around the world? my military background was intercepting morse code from Russia, eastern europe in the early 80's. would i be able to emulate this work on this setup? thanks
LW is Long Wave, which was only ever used in Europe and South America as far as I know. 100 - 500 khz, while AM / Medium Wave is 500 - 1700 khz. Air band is VHF, 120 - 130 mhz or so (just above the FM broadcast band, but is actually AM). Since it's vhf it's line of sight, so you won't hear much unless you are near an airport. If you get lucky you'll hear some planes calling in overhead but that'll be a few seconds of transmission.
@@PsRohrbaugh Yep. Glad I logged about 100 in 6 years! The date keeps moving though on when they'll all be gone in the US. There a couple that have been turned back on in fact! But your sadly right, their days are definitely numbered.
I am delighted to hear good vibes about this radio. Last week I bought a second hand Tecsun 2000 which is the same radio. I absolutely love it. Yes... The sound quality is excellent. I want to do some short wave listening but only have limited space to hook up an antenna. I am currently knocking up an ATU from an old wafer capacitor and tube with wire wrapped around it and tapped. I would welcome any advice on how to rig up a portable type aerial that I can take out to the garden and bring back in when not in use. Do I really need to dig a 6ft hole for an earth? Do I really need an earth?
You will love it. So, Get a MLA-30+ antenna for it. That will make it GREAT! No, you don't need a ground, but it helps. You can also ground it with the house ground in your house.
@@FarpointFarms Okay I will try and find one. In the meantime the simple house ground with modern tech becomes a problem. What house earth? The water pipes are plastic!!
I'll stick to my TS - 590-S , it actually transmitts. 50 Khz to 54mhz. I have a licensed VHF repeater that talks Chicago to Milwaukee to Rockford. Everything is same as my TS - 590S. Except mine will transmit. The other advantage is I have antennas outside. Not a radio mounted antenna. Those stations are in the Carolinas. A very large group of religious stations. Can you pick up WWV ? all 4 frequencys 2.5 and 5 and 10 then 15 Mhz ?
Hi ,great review. I’m thinking about buying this radio. I have very little experience with radios so I have a couple questions about the connectors for the external wire. Do you need the ground wire hooked up all the time or just when your using the sw wire. And what kind of plug goes in the lw/mw directional antenna ?
This is a OK. Radio being a old ham guy a couple of buds bought them and found the band spread a bit wide and both had a wobbly tuning knob . For the cost you can for a bit more new get. Icom Kenwood or a Grundig which are both much better receivers .
Anything that has any electronics in it will be affected. Look at the Carrington event from the late 1800's- it is an eyeopener for solar activity (like an emp) can do
@FarpointFarms ok. Thanks for the reply. I got an old dx302 that something was wrong with it when I got it. Was looking on ebay at some working versions of it and the 750

It's very true. The noise-reduction on batteries is incredible.
I run mine on a battery power bank along with my MLA 30+ aerial. i.e. 2 usb outputs. Goes for days without a charge. No mains or usb noise either.

I had the Eton E1 years back and just couldn't handle the ripping paper overtone to it. Been on the look out for a Satalit 750 or Elite 750 for the right price. I'll have to do the saved search as you did. Something is bound to come up for a good price.
I got this one open box new on eBay for a good price.
When you get the opportunity, get the new Tecsun version .. S-2200x/reminds me of the old Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium, only smaller like the 750 but much better than both. Your in for a treat if you don't already have one. .. wow
I will have to take a look.
I have this radio (with Tecsun S-2000 brand) and use it with 4 D-batteries which work for ages.
Try any of the general coverage rigs like the current crop of SDrs. Miles above and used prices are reasonable. Icom 7300 makes a phenomenal SW rig.
Now if you want the holy Grail, the Watkins Johnson receivers are next level.
I have heard some good things about them, but they are too rich for my blood.
Is the long wave air band in the states used the same as in OZ for NDB radio compass usually has morse ident of location
A lot have closed here now i assume the rely on GPS now days
We had one just out of town 257kh indent RUG01 dismantled now but 2 nice towers still on the hill
The perfect radio shack 🤔😊
Hmm. I am not sure. Anyone else want to chime in?
You need to set up a long wire antenna or better yet an outdoor PA0RDT active antenna for to receive LW better than what you're getting on there.
I am a.complete and total novice but I am so intrigued. I see SW radios with SSB on Ebay that say "aircraft radio". What's the difference?
That is yet another band for you to listen to.
My Eton Elite 750 has never worked. I am sure that it is my fault, I just can't figure out how to get the volume to work. Any ideas? I watched every You Tube video that I could find. Everything seems to work properly, just no Volume.
Is the RF gain turned up?
I actually just bought this radio after seeing you using it.
When I should buy a radio it should be the TECSUN S-2000
It has a 455 kHz ZF-output which can be used for ex. as DRM-converter.
And what I am missing is an ETM/ATM function. That is also not available on the Tecsun S-2000, but is available on cheaper Tecsun's
Interesting. Good to know!
Yeah, that unit has always been on my wish list. Price is a bit too rich for my pocketbook. Glad you got a good deal on one. 👍
You and me both! I could not have afforded this at full price
Is there a difference between the Eton Elite 750 vs Tecsun S2000? Thanks. I see on line the Tecsun generally goes for $100+ more
very nice radio think they started off as a grundig s wave radio i have the stalite 800. grundig which had prtenered up with drake that used to make ham radio gear. then you strated to see etons which look similar. but fun radios to play with but that model has more bells an whistles
Eton's website says currently unavailable. Do you know why?
I am not sure, sorry
Can you connect an external antenna, Wilson 1000 ?
Yes, but something larger than a 100 will really help it. Think 300 feet of wire.
So, can you respond to any signals on shortwave or cb or just listen?
With this unit you just listen. You'd need an HF ham radio like the incredible ICOM 7300 to talk on SW.
Nice radio. I had my DX 160 on last night for a while. I’m still learning how to use it.
Hello,
What you are calling air band (LW) I never get anything either except when at the coast, NJ shore, FL coast. Next time I go to the nearby Bahamas I will test the band outside US. I would think long wave would be for short distance ground wave and not for propagation. That Eton looks sweet. How much are they? Thanks so much.
Arnie Gibbs
I have never been able to pickup anything on longwave either. These sell for nearly $400 new, but you can get them for far less, if you look om ebay.
Any new radios that are the best as of this month ?
I really love that XHDATA that I reviewed last week.
@FarpointFarms I also like the radiosback that you demonstrate. I Ibelieve it was the dx 394. I like the old radio is better. I wouldn't mind trying to find one myself. But it has to be in a 1 condition or next to it.
great review man! new sub here ;) ham radio technician but also a vintrage gaming lover ;) appreciate it
thanks for the sub!
hi, i am new to this field, have not gotten my ham license yet, but have a question for you: can this radio be used to listen to the military Morse bands used in Eastern Europe and other places around the world? my military background was intercepting morse code from Russia, eastern europe in the early 80's. would i be able to emulate this work on this setup? thanks
Yes.
Is this the same as the Grundig Sattelit 750?
Yes it is
LW is Long Wave, which was only ever used in Europe and South America as far as I know.
Remember that the human ear can hear 0 - 20 khz, so radio waves at 100 khz are really low frequency in the RF world.
Longwave is used everywhere for air beacons also. Used by planes for radnav.
@@devilsatan2973 you're correct, but they're being decommissioned and will all be turned off by 2026
@@PsRohrbaugh Yep. Glad I logged about 100 in 6 years! The date keeps moving though on when they'll all be gone in the US. There a couple that have been turned back on in fact! But your sadly right, their days are definitely numbered.
This radio is also known as Tecsun S-2000. 👍
I bought mine a number of years ago as the Grundig Satellit.
Super cool!
I really love this radio.
Can you pickup airliners
Yes you can
Tecsun S-2000 appears to be the same radio.
I miss my Sat 750 - someone stole it while we were camping several years ago - hope they enjoy it as much as I did.
Aww man, sorry to hear that- I hope they got a flat tire on the way home from stealing it
Hopefully, when they got home, the tuner went out like mine did radio is a piece of junk
THE EATON IS PART OF MY RADIO ROOM DREAM. A EATON, A RADIO SHACK PRO 400 SCANNER ALL CONNECTED TO A DISCONE ANTENNA.
I hope that you can get your dream soon
I have the grundig satellit 750, the original version. It's 6 years old, performs perfectly. It's reciever is as good as my yaesu ft101
Cool, thanks for sharing the comparison
If you don't mind me asking. You mentioned you bought your radio open box. How much did you pay for it? Thanks.
This was a few years ago and I can't remember- My memory sucks the older I get. Sorry
Weather?
No.
What about a transmitter?
I recommended CB radio above all other types. It's cheap, license free and there are more CB radios out there than any other type of radio.
@@FarpointFarms
Okay I will try and find one.
In the meantime the simple house ground with modern tech becomes a problem.
What house earth?
The water pipes are plastic!!
CCrane SW comparison?
If I can get my hands on a CCrane I might just have to make one
Thank you ! RWB
Glad you liked it.
Can you pick up
WWV ? all 4 frequencys 2.5 and 5 and 10 then 15 Mhz ?
Yes, I have a active loop outside so I get a lot of distant stations.
Hi ,great review. I’m thinking about buying this radio. I have very little experience with radios so I have a couple questions about the connectors for the external wire. Do you need the ground wire hooked up all the time or just when your using the sw wire. And what kind of plug goes in the lw/mw directional antenna ?
It helps to have it hooked up all the time, but it's not needed. It will lower the noise floor if used. The connection is a PL259.
I would love to get one of these!!
? does it have a screw for a long wire antenna
This is a OK. Radio being a old ham guy a couple of buds bought them and found the band spread a bit wide and both had a wobbly tuning knob . For the cost you can for a bit more new get. Icom Kenwood or a Grundig which are both much better receivers .
I've been happy with mine.
Why is there so much static? I just ordered one. I have smaller radio sounds like this I payed 100 dollars!
It is an older technology that is inherent to having static- I am sorry you dont like it
Do they still have the Atomic Clock on short wave
Yes!
Can you listen to ships at sea that transmit HF?
Yes! I hear ship sea reports all the way up here in the mountains from the cape hatteras area.
I am a novice, but can this ham radio or any ham radio be affected negatively by an E M P?
Anything that has any electronics in it will be affected. Look at the Carrington event from the late 1800's- it is an eyeopener for solar activity (like an emp) can do
How does this compare to the realistic DX 300? Which one would you say is better receive? Better audio?
This is a better radio, but the Realistic sure is better looking!
@FarpointFarms ok. Thanks for the reply. I got an old dx302 that something was wrong with it when I got it.
Was looking on ebay at some working versions of it and the 750
These are great radios - I have the Grundig version. Just need more SW broadcasters! RUGER
Can you help a guy out here? What the difference in the Eton Elite 750 NELITE750 vs Eton Elite 750, besides the price?
Farpoint farms you should set the clock to utc for shortwave
Not a bad idea.
What’s utc?
very nice.
Agreed!
