- They say an image is worth a thousand words. But some images do more than just that. Some images can tell the tales of prosperity...while others show us the stories of poverty..
Some show us the accounts of the past...and others allow us to predict the future.
This is an image of the night lights over the detroit metropolitan in the year 2012. This area was once, one of the brightest, wealthiest, and largest cities in the united states just 50 years ago. But steadily over the past 5 decades, its economy and population has been on the decline. So when we look at the density of night lights over detroit in 2012, and compare it to 2016, you will actually see the city get dimmer. This is because over the four years where these images were taken, the population of this area declined by almost 100,000. Meaning that there are less people, and businesses using lights at night, than there were 4 years prior.
And on the opposite side of this prosperity spectrum, we have India. You see, two things tend to correlate with how bright a city is. One of which is population density, and the other is economics. As a general rule, the better a city is doing economically, the brighter the city will be. So that is why between 2012 and 2016, india saw this happen. during those 4 years, india saw the wealth of its average citizen increase by over 30%. And when you combine its modernization of its infrastructure, along with its dense population, you get a significantly brighter country. Now saying that, india is still has a lot of poverty and is a developing country. But these images show the giant leaps that have been taken within the country over the course of those 4 years.
This is the continent of africa. The average person that lives on this continent makes just over $1,500 a year...which makes it the poorest continent on the planet. But when you take into account that in 2002, the average person made only about $580/year, than you would see africa has some of the fastest growing economies in the world. In fact, four of the top 5 fastest growing countries in the world, are in Africa. So with such fast growth, you would expect to see the lights turn on pretty quick around africa, just like they did in india.
But that is not the case. This is what happened. Only a few cities in countries like ethiopia, are significantly brighter in 2016, than they were in 2012. And one of the reasons why this is is because Africa is notorious for having poor infrastructure. Despite having some of the fastest growing economies in the world, the continent is still largely rural, with a very slow moving movement to modernize its infrastructure.
And one of the weirdest things about africa is actually on the west coast. When you take a look at the 2012 image, and compare it to the 2016 image, you see that the west coast didnt get any brighter or darker...but it seemed to have its lights shift from one place to another. And some of the new lights are actually brighter in the sea than they are on land. So why is this? Well its actually because the two countries that do this the most are angola and nigeria, two countries that are known for one thing. Oil. Those shifting lights are actually gas flares of newly commissioned oil rigs.
If we look at europe as a whole, we can see a few key things that might help us predict the future of european nations. The first thing you may notice is that there are significantly less lights in rural areas in 2016, compared to 4 years prior. Meaning that the continent went through a large urbanization period during those 4 years, as cities like london, and amsterdam amongst others, got significantly brighter during that time.
But you might has also noticed that some countries like spain and italy as a whole actually got darker, and this is due to two reasons. One of which was that these countries actually had their populations decrease during those four years, while also having some of the most anemic economic growth in the world.
Over the last 2 decades, China has begun shifting its economy away from a manufacturing based economy, to more of a consumer based economy. And because of that, a handful of Indo-China countries such as Thailand have apparently reaped the economic rewards of being handed substantially more manufacturing business from around the world.

*But PLEASE* take off your western propaganda hat. If there was a US Port in Pakistan (like the THOUSANDS around the world) you wouldn't call it "building world domination" you would call it "enhancing established trade routes" or something similar.

As far as the dimming in Europe goes, there are two important reasons why this happened: Many countries started to care about nightly light pollution and purposely started to reduce light emissions.
On the other hand, neon tubes and bulbs are largely being replaced by more focussed LEDs, that's why less lights escapes from where it is needed into space.
After all: these policies are making sense.
I went looking for this post.
In India...now there is 99% led lights
Yup. It isn't just the spectral difference of LEDs, it is also smart lighting.
A lot of places now have street lights that only turn on when someone is using the road or cyclepath. They are also dimmable so the can adjust the amount of light they use depending on the needs of the pedestrian/cyclist/car/truck.
This provides a 70% energy saving compared to running LEDs at full power all the time and also lowers maintenance costs as the LEDs last longer.
Hopefully Europe will be getting a lot darker as these improvements are rolled out further.

NOOO the two pictures of the world at night are different because they used different saturation!!! Detroit for example Is "dimmer" but if you check carefully also all the other cities in the USA appears of a darker shade. You have to understand that this pictures are created as a collage of thousands of singular pictures that are only later combined to look as united, it's normal that at the end the shade of color of the light Is different in the two different pictures. Your considerations are correct but this pictures are no way indicators of a decrease in population in Spain, Italy nor the Detroit area. Please be more careful of what you publish online.

The passage about the Aral sea was so sketchy, oversimplified and biased. No rivers were turned, quite the opposite the USSR was seriously considering turning great Siberian rivers to fill in the sea (I remember it was hot topic in newspapers those days). Researches show that the level of the sea before the last Ice Age was at its current level. One of the theories which explains the depletion of the sea is that during the last Ice Age there was no passage for the Siberian rivers to the Arctic sea because of the enormous ice shield, and the rivers had to flow backwards and flood in the plains of Central Asia thus forming the Aral sea. Ever since the last Ice Age the lake was shrinking, plus rivers Amurdarya and Syrdarya were heavily used to water cotton fields of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, which accelerated of the depletion of that great lake.
The diversion of the rivers for irrigation of cotton was begun under the Soviets & has devastated a fishery for a commodity crop that many other competitors can grow better. Most importantly, Soviet germ warfare labs were on some islands in the Aral Sea which are now just part of the salt-crusted plains. Serious biohazard stuff going on there; there are other videos here on YT that go into it in detail.
Yes the account was biased, but the depletion of the Aral sea was due to massive irrigation projects in central Asia.

in Europe we have been trying to fight light pollution, thats why Europe look darker.
During that time (2012-2016) I lived in two different EU countries and both have changed ALL of their street lights to "eco" bulbs and also dimmer to lower night light pollution.
You missed out on that point buddy (it's something that especially Americans find hard to wrap their mind around..yeah LIGHT POLLUTION! )

Small percentage is street lights are high discharge or incandescent light giving 360 ambient glow. Led has taken place giving lower and direct light with more blue tones not as noticeable from space. Just saying.

Maaaaan, the night that the photos were taken may have different weather. In one case the lights may be dimmer while in another it may be stronger depending on how much polution or clouds had been on that particular night. Another possibility is that even 0,0001 degree disturbance at the camera may cause a lot of difference since the satalites are very very high. So, your hypothesis may be true but your reasoning is wrong from head to tail...
Fifteen years back, an Australian city installed LED lighting about its beaches. The city engineer went to see the results, on the first night. He could see very little. All the LEDs pointed at what was to be illuminated, so didn't leak light into the sky!

A lot of the dimming may be down to moving from conventional lighting to LED street lighting, which from experience are not as bright. A lot of developed countries are trying to reduce light pollution.
Yeah thats what I was thinking. LEDs are less focused so not as bright from a distance, right ? That could explain a lot here.

The 2008 economic crisis had its toll in Spanish lighting, but there are other things to consider too. Just before the crisis there were calls for the prevention of the so-called "light pollution", many luminaries were changed to less bright ones and others were decommissioned. The process took years to be completed.
