Good review! I like the look of these. Nice and small. The deal breaker for me is the controller attached to the pump. I have an acrylic tank with holes in the eurobrace for wires. I don't think that would fit thru. :( They are $$. More than MP10s! Much better looking in your tank than the bulky MP10
Great power head if you can call it that way , great invention , definitely don`t take too much space inside the tank but almost 300 dollars is way too much money for one , maybe in the future price may come down , Thank You for the video and all the info.
Pretty sure that Mp10's would be just as good for what your doing given they have this as a baked in feature... With both being about the same price i think the only difference between the 2 pumps from a glance is Nero is more low profile while Mp10 has no cord in the water. I would say that is the option being made here and that on paper these pumps should be capable of what you are doing equally well.
I will add my two cents. I have recently bought 2 of these Nero 5's . I also in the past have had many MP40's. Here is my review. The Nero's absolutely blow the Mp40's out of the water. But for only a few reasons. The Nero's have an amazing design, the "large Impeller" is amazing. The suction from the rear of the pump is also great. Mp's have the propellers in which pull from the sides which i will say from experience been an issue with wandering things "anemones" to be exact. Which is why they supply there mesh "screening" for the pump. But who wants to use and deal with the cleaning of those? The 15 degrees of shifting is good, not the best, i Would love to have seen a stronger magnet to be honest and also a little more than 15 degrees in movement of the pump, since that is a huge draw i think, against other pumps on the market currently. The other downfall which is a complete personal opinion is that the cord has to go into the tank. Mp's the cord is hidden on the outside of the tank, a amazing feature but a personal opinion. All in all after dealing with what i believe are the 2 best power heads on the market. The Mp's and the Nero's. I pick the Nero's for sure.
So the Nero 5 will push water over 4'? Flow is not a real "problem" for my 4' mixed 120, as I have a VorTech M1 on full but I do want somethin to augment this and my gyre is crapping out.
Great video! Keep reviewing new items if you can, I feel reviewing items on UA-cam become a hit because everyone is wondering whether it’s good or not and you can answer for them!
Great video. I have the same size tank. Would love to see the schedule you are running for the pumps. I am on the fence currently about making the switch but I will say my mp10s do have some dead spotss in the tank.
Nice review Jake 👍🏻. Just noticed you have 2 radions on that tank 😱😱😱! Do you know what are your PAR values? When I switched from T5s to AiHydra26 in my 200g the tips of my staghorn immediately did a 180 degree turn and started to grow away from the light. I measured the par and it was at 500 with the Ais at 70% so I turned them down to 50%.
I place the pumps high for two reasons - so that I see them less and when you move the surface water you generate the most momentum for water to continue moving throughout the aquarium
So you really think this little pump can push water over 4'? Flow is not a real problem for me, as I have a VorTech M1 on full but having said that, am looking for something to replace my gyre, which is crapping out. Simple question: Nero 5 or MP40?
What's the smallest tank you'd put this relatively strong pump on? Would it be too much for a IM 25 gallon lagoon? Alternatively I'd get an MP10. Thanks!
@@ReefBuildersVideo just idea that may or may not work. Worth millions lol. It is just a similar design to the nero as far as how it mounts to the glass. Basically create 2 magnets, one that is flat on one side and attaches to any ecotech wetside and on the other side of same magnet, have it rounded slightly, entire magnet encased in plastic obviously. The second mag would be flat on one side and concaved on the other. This mag would go on the inside of the tank against the ecotech moter, then you attach the wet side into the concaved mag, and now you can slightly rotate the wetside in any direction you choose. Not sure huh ow well this would work due to the added mags the motor would have to transfer its field through to hit the wet side mag. Just an idea that came to head when seeing the nero pumps design. The 2 added mags would be no larger than 3" or smaller. Another idea is simply making different cages for the wetside on the ecotech pumps, designs to give multiple different flow patterns along with the different control setting on the pump itself. Or even a cage on the wet side where you can adjust the front of the cage in any direction you choose. Or.....lol, even a new controller which allows you to run the pump in reverse, pulling water into it and having different cage designs to direct the flow. I have a powerhead idea as well, similar to the propellerless Dyson fans. Basically the same thing just shrunk down small for tanks and instead of air it would push water. It would be turned upside down and possibly hang on side of aquarium or mag mount, fish could swim through it without being injured. Just an idea as well. Send me one once in full production to test, lol
Hey cool stuff very new to nano reef stuff. I saw you had aqamai KPS and now a Nero 5. Is the Nero 5 that much more better? Given its limited angle range, types of setting options less diverse to the aqamai, and more energy consumption. Keep up the great videos
You are right that I don't the lights and pumps full bore all the time, but since this is *controllable* equipment for a high energy Acro tank, the lights do ramp up to hundred percent for a small duration in the middle of the day, and the pumps ramp up to 80% during certain cycles.
If I have a long peninsula aquarium (6 feet long x 60cm wide), would these be too wide of a flow and wont reach other side? I'm super sensitive to noise and i'm starting to get annoyed at my second generation Gyre's pulse sound. thank you
for a six foot long tank you're really going to want something else to throw six feet across the tank, maybe a future Nero 7, 9 or whatever they call it
I'd just really like to know the difference between the Nero and waveline wave puck 2. I have the wave pucks and absulity love the programmability of them with the connected controller. The plus is that the wavepuck is also only 139.99 retail.
@@ReefBuildersVideo thats would really be the perfect difference of the two that I see. I had gotten some sand in mine moving some coral and made it very noisy. I tried to take it a part with no resolve. I finally just violently stirred it around in a bucket of water and was thankfully able to get all the sand out.
Your are not an Apex guy, any reason why ? I had a bad experience with Apex but a Guy like you that has been in this hobby for years is quit interesting to know why. Thank Luis
So here's the 64 dollar question, or I should say the 50 dollar question. A Nero 5 for $299, or a Vortech MP40QD for $349, price point is fairly similar so is it a 50 dollar wireless pump? Or is the MP40 just a superior all around device? Gotta say though, not sure why but I'm not digging that teal/blue propeller.
Mike B personally the fact there isn’t a big stupid looking magnet (mp40) appeals to me. Also allows placement on the back of the tank whist the tank is still close to the wall. I think the mp40 has more power for a longer tank but the nero 5 has a more broad flow so depends what you are looking for and the size of your tank.
People moaning that is is a copy of the puck are clueless and have no idea how much money goes into the controller and software. The software features this thing has is by far and away the best on the market.

I have a customer with Nero 5 operating on an 8ft tank and works fine! Awesome unit!!
Nice review, I have been using one for a few weeks now. great little pump! very flexible in its uses .
Great review Jake. You've really upped your B roll game!
Just tested it on my 24” mixed reef cube tank and even 1 x Nero 5 seems overpowered. Dialled it down to 25%.
I would have loved to see the control options on the app and how the flow actually looks in the tank at different settings.

Ok is the Nero 5 too big for my 55 gallon, if not what speed would you keep it at ?
How about heat emission? Would it be too hot for corals?

People keep hating on your hair...

Nice review Jake. The wide flow is interesting. I read some forum posts of people replacing their gyres with this. Think this is better than a gyre?
No pump can really match the instant and easy control of the Nero 5, and the gyre is very different, but overdue for a refresh IMO
Can you show us the phone app next time for these? Or did I miss it?
wow you got the same color hair as the pump lol...great vid as always thanks

Either one of those pumps would be a great choice for an IM 25 lagoon.
Why dont you try them on the back wall to hide them a bit better?
Because then the flow wouldn’t be aimed at the high light corals I want to
Hi how are you?
