What Happens If You Fail A Checkride?

  • Join me as I discuss the disapproval process, more commonly known as failing your checkride. Failure is always a significant cause for concern; however, I think the more you know about something, the less scary it is. No one wants this outcome, but it happens and is simply a part of being a pilot. Luckily, it’s usually not a big deal and will have few impacts on your long-term flying career. It won’t be your favorite day in aviation, but you can easily overcome a checkride failure and have a good learning experience to take on afterward.
Thank you for all the feedback, I look forward to hearing more! If you have anything you would like to share, please email me at: sethlake@vsl.aero.

I got a NOD on my ASEL PPL ride for an unsatisfactory short field landing. That was the only failure, everything else went fine. Unfortunately for me, my DPE doesn't have the same view on go-arounds as Seth. I had ballooned trying to drag it in to the designated target and initiated a go-around, but it was a fail at that point. I got with my CFI when we got back and did a few practice landings with moderate success. I could have retested that day, but I was tired, disappointed, the weather was getting worse and my hands were starting to cramp, so I called it a day. I'm 70 years old and have been at this for over 200 hours and more than 600 landings, so I know how to do it, just not when I needed it most. Try again next week I guess. Seth's videos are the BEST.

DPEs in my area refuse to talk to us instructors after tests.
I know it’s not true for all areas. I wish all DPEs were more like you and other good DPEs.
I do wish DPEs at least acknowledge that check ride failures end careers. I know several CFIs at my school that all have been told by the airlines that they’ll never fly for them. They all have between 2-5 failures.

Hey man! I just wanted to say that this video helped me a lot! I got a NOD of dissaproval about 3 questions into the oral portion due to a stupid plotting mistake that i have learned from.
However, i had been working towards that checkride for almost 3 years. It absolutely ruined me, and i still have a hard time going to the airport due to the embarrassment and reminder of my failure.
I really needed this positive outlook on the subject! Thank you so much!

I'm sorry to hear about your NOD, but like I said in the video - it's not a big deal. You will learn more from that failure than any pass. Failed checkrides are just a part of aviation (not a fun part though).
Best of luck on your future training and thanks for watching the channel!

I passed my private pilot checkride this last week. The possible failure was weighing heavily on me as I prepared the last 4 weeks. A combination of circumstances pushed my checkride out 4 weeks from when it was originally scheduled. I used the time to dive deeply into your videos which helped me break down the huge intimidation I had for the ACS. They reminded me that the DPE is human and was once in our shoes. The DPE wants you to succeed and I had an amazing DPE! Your CFI wants you to succeed and I had an amazing CFI! Your CFI would not schedule you for your checkride if they did not believe in you. BELIVE IN YOURSELF! Jason Schappert's "Pass Your Private Pilot Pilot Checkride" helped make sure to fill in any blanks I may have missed. The week prior, my CFI did a mock oral checkride to find any holes in my oral preparation and the mock flight checkride tightened up my maneuvers, takeoffs and landings. If I would have failed, I would have known where. I just needed to BELIVE IN MYSELF! The airport DPE had me to go was my first checkpoint but flying over and seeing the windsock, it was beyond my personal minimums for crosswind. I told him and he said said good airmanship decision making and we went to another airport. You gave me that confidence. Thanks Seth!

I received a NOD for the oral on my instrument today. Before going to take the checkride I told my wife I didn't know what I didn't know...well now I do! I got hung up on the cross country planning. I relied on the performance profile my original CFI gave me for the plane and just assumed it was good. It was good at 2500' but not at my planned flight level of 8000'. I had never given that any thought nor do I remember that being a part of my training. However, I think it is very important with IFR flight as it will affect the time and fuel requirements. The importance of having correct performance profiles and how to set them up properly in ForeFlight would be a great subject for you to cover in a future video. I'm doubtful many pilots give this much thought but due to my NOD I always will! I now realize I need to adjust the performance profile for every flight plan I do. Hoping to retest quickly and get to the flight portion of the checkride. Thank you for your videos...they are great!

That's really basic stuff. Makes me wonder what else you don't know. For a typical small training aircraft there's a significant difference between 2500 and 8000. I would have failed you too.

Along with all of your incredibly helpful and interesting videos especially the instrument ACS series. Thank you!! I watched this one of yours last year hoping I would never experience the NOD. Last week I got one on my instrument check ride.
It was a short 16-mile trip to the initial fix of my last approach of the test, an RNAV-B to be flown partial panel, then finished with a circle to land and I would be done. I had to pick up the clearance with ATC, frequency change to Chicago, request the approach and the hold (a procedure turn), ask for vector to the hold while I reprogramed the panel, pull up the plate, brief it, and then a before landing check. With that accomplished my DPE blackened my attitude/heading indicators and I entered the hold at 4k. There was other traffic below preventing ATC from clearing us lower so the DPE had me cancel IFR and she would play approach control. She directed me a descent to 3k and cleared me for the approach. After switching to CTAF I made my initial position call and while dead nuts on course I flew along quietly patting myself on the back. So consumed with how well I was doing that I cruised right through the final approach fix 500' high. Being high and close to the airport I realized this was going south about 1/2mile out and declared missed approach. As I started the missed procedure she asked why I didn't descend after being cleared. I had no good answer (I didn't know what I messed up at that point, only that I had). She said, "we are done, I have to issue a disapproval, take off your goggles and head back to the airport".
Worst feeling ever! Returning to my home airport was the longest, most unenjoyable quiet 10-minutes I ever spent flying an airplane. I watched this video again just this morning and cant thank you enough for making it and wanted to share my experience. My fault 100%, my CFII is constantly telling me "when you find yourself just flying along enjoying being a pilot, you're messing up!" (only he doesn't say messing) and boy was I ever. A week delay in getting the rating and a few hundred dollars poorer I hope to finally finish this a little wiser.

I got a disapproval during my instrument checkride last month and on top of all the nervousness and pressure made me feel sick almost to the point of wanting to vomit. My DPE made it very clear what I had done wrong and why he could not let it "slide". He gave me some vectors aftwards to allow me to recompose myself as i opted to proceed with the remaining 2 approaches then retested the 1 failed LOC approach 2 weeks later which earned my rating.
As the disapproval stemmed from the failure to Aviate - Navigate - Communicate in order (my prioritizing of switching to tower frequency made me fail to start the timer over the final approach fix). It put a huge mental note that I ALWAYS need to prioritize flying the plane first.
Also. Thanks a lot for running through the ACS. It helped me hugely during the oral portion!.

I’m ready …. Big question I fail in my step turne ppl my instructor instruct me to do those a 65 digress and that is for Comercial so even asking my CFI insisted that most be 65 plus my plane has ESP so got even harder beside that flap ups at 1000 feet even I ask him the pho says 400 feet he insiste that was safer
So I fail for both … now my question I’ll be examination just for those two or my new DPE will ask for more
I couldn’t pick my sane DPE because the CFI
find a DPE in Uthat so far away and my base is Miami no ever mountain … so my question as I will get a new DPE … will he ask me more than the two fail task ?

    • @SethLakeDPE
      @SethLakeDPE  10 місяців тому

Thanks for the feedback! Your DPE is required to test all the tasks you were disapproved for. If you failed for steep turns however they would also have to grade your takeoff and landing because you would have to do another one to get to the practice area and order to re-accomplish the steep turns. So while the DPE is only required to evaluate you on the items that were on your NOD you will often be evaluated on more than that.

I really appreciate your videos and would like to get your insights on my instrument checkride I had couple months ago.
So I received a notice of disapproval because I did not include alternates on my nav log even thought the weather along my flight plan was VFR all the way to my destination. The other thing is I gave a wrong answer first about the non standard alternates minimum for a precision approach (flight visibility 2 Statute mile) the DPE did not allow me to look at 91.169 since I was not sure. Other than that, we went over the all ACS and all the questions were answered correctly. My notice of disapproval just mentioned alternate and flight planning. I did not receive a debrief from the DPE nor did my instructor. No ones could tell me why I failed. The DPE did not talk to me, he just left without saying a word. What’s your insight in that? I was left confused. It was hard to digest that. I ended up passing with the same DPE after a 3 minutes oral in which he did not know what was the ground for the failure. I don’t know how to explain this during my interview in which I don’t want anyone to think I don’t own up to my mistakes.
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you for sharing and I'm sorry to hear about your disapproval. The key thing to do here is own the failure and approach it with as much humility as possible. You failed but successfully re-tested and learned something from the whole experience. I wouldn't try to explain how the DPE might have been unfair in a interview environment. Just simply state you weren't as prepared as you should have been for your instrument checkride and received a disapproval. More than likely, the discussion will end there. Whoever is interviewing you will understand that failures happen and as long as there isn't a pattern it's not a big deal. Best of luck on your future flying!
