Yep I know that one all too well, luckily the on camera Sony interface comes with a rather long cable to place a microphone / interface in another location from that hot shoe MI interface so I can still use the handle with the cage... I just dislike that the cable is soooo long, 4 inches/ 13cm would have been fine but it is like 1 foot long / 30cm
what’s even funnier is how it’s built right into the Osmo Pocket 3 and Osmo Action 5. When DJI drops their mirrorless it’s gonna hold the industry’s heat to the flames. I’ll bet that’s part of why they’re begging regulators to ban DJI in the US, just like how US auto mfgs couldn’t compete with Japanese light trucks so they implemented the chicken tax.
The Godox sounds so similar to the DJI I don't think most people could tell the difference. The hollyland is noticeably more clear and bright but I like the Godox best.
Excellent comparison. I own the DJI mic2 dual mic set + DJI LAVs, and the DJI Sony adapter. It's great to see more manufacturers using the Sony Mi hotshoe for digital audio. After listening to the back to back comparisons with my reference headphones, I'm relieved to hear that the Godox is very tinny sounding compared to the richness of the DJI and Hollyland. But I'm not mad at that because the price difference can't be ignored. Great job Godox!
One thing these comments are missing is how good these mics sound for the price paid and on top of that there is likely a licensing fee paid to Sony. The value is technically a clear win for Godox when looking at the price to performance.

Dji's innovation is the reason why i went with their Mic 2 microphones. I love Rode Go-ii but DJI had me sold on the Mi hotshoe adapter. Its a huge game changer especially with my fx3. I can dont have to use an audio cable and i can keep the transmitter charging. Good to see that Godox went the same route with their wireless mics too. Rode needs to do the same on their future Go-ii mics or get left behind. As of now, I am waiting for DJi or Sony to release a transmitter that can connect up to 4 wireless mics. 2 is not enough anymore especially when these mirrorless cameras can record in 4-audio channel.
You read my mind! I was looking for an alternative to the DJI Mic 2. I actually found a huge flaw in the Mic 2 when hooked up to an Action 4 (and maybe 5 Pro). In Pre-Rec mode the Mic 2 will time out and turn off. Leaving you with no audio an hour later when that fish decides to eat your bait. My next fishing video is a voiceover video... 🙄 Edit: a mic for my Sony ZV-E10 ii (yes I got the 2 instead of 1)
Thanks for this, Mark! Btw, is your lowcut still activated on the DJI Mic 2? Is your firmware up to date? I only ask because it sounds muffled (10:28). My own DJI Mic 2 sounds just as good as the original DJI Mic, so your sound surprised me.
yes - updated and no low cut on. I think the other mics just sound brighter with more treble - but I actually like the DJI a lot these days. I prefer a little low end
The noise cancelling is surprisingly solid, doesn’t seem to meaningfully diminish the sound quality in the higher frequencies which is usually the unfortunate effect of noise cancellation.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis how’s the NC on the Lark M2? I agree that the Godox NC was very impressive. Those are on my buy-it list! Greetings from far too hot Florida!
I disagree, that noise noise reduction is too harsh, it degrades the audio quality with that recognizable over processed warbly "quality". They have a great product, having a 3.5mm lav input and internal recording would be a great added value.
I understand that the convenience factor of going wire-free is appealing, but the biggest asset of the hot-shoe for audio is that it bypasses the crappy 3.5mm mic jack preamps, which is where lots of audio quality is dropped, and the audible noise floor is introduced. I'd love to see them make a 2 or 4 XLR input module, with optional phantom power, and really good preamps, that attaches via the hot-shoe. They would sell a lot of them if they made it. That way folks could attach any mic they want to their cameras without losing sound quality.

Great video. With the DJI magnet have you found any alternatives that are all black and similar size? Or recommendations on painting the magnet to hide the branding? I've considered gaffe tape but hoping for something that looks more professional.
Great video as always. As a creator who makes dramedy and webseries content of late, I’m interested in wireless mic solutions that can be hidden with a lavelier mic rather than the obnoxious “rode” or “godox” billboards the actors have to wear as mics. For me the start of pro quality audio starts with a senheiser me2 lav which is a locking ring pin, so that immediately eliminates Godox, Dji and Lark. Only the rode 2 pro? has a locking ring but I haven’t tried it yet so stick to my bulky senheiser wireless mic pack. Hope the new generation of wireless mics incorporate locking ring ports for this reason as no serious influencer other than daily vloggers are going to use their giant branded bulky, and therefore in my opinion useless mics currently, or use their proprietary lavs without locking rings as there is not enough R and D to beat senheiser lav mics who rule the roost on this one.
I feel like it wouldn't take much work on DJI and Sony's part to make sony cameras record quad channel through the hotshoe, and to connect 4 DJI mics to the reciever. it likely requires hardware upgrades, but it's cool to think that we're not far off quad channel recording being that simple.
Hollyland I think has the fullest sound Dji is great, just bulky though I really like the ability to use an external mic. Godox is tinny and has significantly less low end. Wonder if you can use EQ to tone it out better or if the recording bandwidth just isn't there.
I bought the DJI Adapter and it failed after it's third outing, it was a royal pain as it was a big complicated video with a lot moving parts. I think the DJI also sounds very tinny in general and have been thinking about changing it up so will check out the godox as I have some of their lights in my studio
That's nice and all. But it was not mentioned once that it has 32-Bit Float. So I'd not even consider it. And out of those that DO have it, I think the Røde Wireless Pro sounds best.
Can you connect the DJI mic which comes with the Pocket 3 creator combo to a Sony Camera by buying that DJI adapter? Or does that particular mic just work with the Pocket 3? The Hollyland blows the others away in quality.
Nice, but I have single DJI Mic2 from my Pocket 3, and I actually do not care to connect this to my camera. Cause I record internally 32bit float and then link it in post. And also I'm not buying anything Godox anymore :D. I spent already $3500 on their gear (lights, flashes, etc) and they don't even want to sent me their $200 flag set for the review 🤣🤣🤣.
I wonder how they got the license to use the Multi interface hot shoe, Sony were quite salty about it, they went as far as to discontinue an adapter they once made (hot shoe to 3.5mm) just to boost their microphone sales
i thought this was about Sony getting an A mount battery to E mount inlet adapter or a huge A6700A revamp where they added a better hardware (like 1/8000 mechanical or a joystick) I am disappointed.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis well Sony can screw themselves then. I was hoping for an APS-C BSI sensor on an A7IV/RV like body with a 2K finder and a 1920p screen but no. I am still under the good old dilemma: Sony A6700 or A7IV? I am a hobbyist but I do a lot of wildlife and aviation, I demand good AF and a crop sensor, but I also love low light scenarios and astro, so a full frame sensor suits me more. The A7RIV is a good all rounder and the fixed screen ain't a problem since I can just use IEM on the phone, but all my lenses are Minolta and A7RIV is only compatible with LA-EA4 I'm very inclined to get the A7IV, but I'm afraid the 14mp crop won't serve much if I had to crop an aircraft a lot... AAAAAAAAAAAA
Just a random thought, most cameras including the ZV-E1 only record in 16bit from external mics, this may be fine for many things but considering mics with onboard recording these days usually do 24bit and some even 32bit, recording audio with the camera is a huge downgrade... So assuming you want to use the mic's own onboard recording, the wifi part may just not be necessary for many applications, so why not just a tiny cheap 24bit or 32bit recorder with no wireless transmission at all instead? - does such a thing exist?
My guess on the reasons why this isnt well known is because the audio quality takes a hit, similar to the DJI version..... they had a previous version and the audio did produce a significant amount of noise, and I'm highly confident that the audio is recorded as analog rather than digital.
the Godox and the DJI with adapter overrides the Sony mic settings, which is the same thing that Sony's own hot-shoe mics do. So it appears to be a digital signal, but did you mean to say that the audio sounds better analog than digital when using DJI?
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis right, godox sent me the previous version, and I combed the documentation to see whether it's a digital or analog signal, no information found, and from my testing with sony's hot mics is that the analog signal is noisy, while the digital signal is clean, and this was with one of sony's analog hot mics? I forget the model, but it was an analog hot mic and the wired sounded better than the analog signal (both technically analog signals, confusing, I know), but it also defeats the point to buy a hot mic and use the wire instead..... to clarify, the mi hotshoe can pass either analog or digital signal, and not mentioning what type of signal is passed, I can only assume that both the DJI and Godox pass analog because that would be a highly advertised feature if otherwise.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis they sent me one and I love the wireless part but godox did way better via 3.5mm. So for now I'll stick with the rode wireless go II until I can save the money for the DJI
Man, that Godox is mighty tinny sounding! I still love the HollyLand Lark M2 over all others. The DJi Mic 2 is a very close second. I hope HollyLand can make a Lark M3 with 32bit float and somehow fit a lav mic port in that little thing!?
@@DavidWinstead I asked Hollyland about some upgrades for the next Hollyland lark max including about the Sony MI hot shoe, locking lav, 32bit float and more. I think Mark is correct internal recording for M2 would be very hard with the size but the camera hot show interface now that would be possible. The thing with 32bit float actually requires extra complexity which means it takes space to do it. Rather than one 16 or 24bit decoder we are talking about 3 of them. Basically 32bit requires physical stacked chips working together. i believe it was Curtis that has a video weeks ago showing how 32bit works at the hardware level using a simplified description. I am actually disappointed by the DJI Mic 2 sound quality. My DJI mic original sounded better and the firmware update might improve clarity of spoken work but at the cost of adding sibilance "sssss" sound emphasis.
“Let’s make a mic for content creators with a flashing light and an obnoxious logo right on the front! That’ll make their footage look as awesome as it’ll sound!” You gotta wonder who they employ as product designers at these outfits
As an owner of both of these the godox is terrible audio, even at its lowest setting it can peak while talking, it has 3 gain levels which are high, higher and unusable
To be honest, the Godox sounds pretty thin compared to the other mics, especially the Hollyland. Are you sure you didn’t have a low cut filter engaged at some point on the Godox test?! It’s great they are sponsoring the episode but, Godox isn’t going to win anybody over with this comparison.
obviously personal preference is most important, but If you read the comments, a lot of people like the Godox. You can always tweak the audio easily to your liking. there is no low cut filter on the Godox
I just bought one so Godox can thank you. Be careful about 32-bit float. Sorry, my opinion, which I blather on relentlessly in my videos, is a scam when it comes to analog recording. Want to use it in post, fine. Believe it improves audio capture...caveat emptor.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks. That was my next question, do you ever need it? I've never had good luck with that Sony multi adapter. I get the "Adapter not recognized". I'm hoping Godox can make it work better than Sony can with it's own devices! ;)
I've only used the backup audio once. I find it's useful to have if you're somewhere being paid, or doing interviews where you'll never get a second chance.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Okay, it won't work with my a6400 (only a6700 in that series).
I wish Sony had added a digital input in the multi-pin so we could have digital audio embed options and avoid more conversions and noise
I feel like it wouldn't take much work on DJI and Sony's part to make sony cameras record quad channel through the hotshoe, and to connect 4 DJI mics to the reciever. it likely requires hardware upgrades, but it's cool to think that we're not far off quad channel recording being that simple.
Hollyland I think has the fullest sound
Dji is great, just bulky though I really like the ability to use an external mic.
Godox is tinny and has significantly less low end. Wonder if you can use EQ to tone it out better or if the recording bandwidth just isn't there.
you can tweak it for sure.
Yes! I Will buy the Godox. Good quality!
It may just be me but I never had an issue with plugging in a short cable. They are extremely cheap and works with all mic interfaces
true true
Thank U for the video.
What about the Lumix S5 Mark II X? Are there any options available? Thanks!
Yup. The saying's true, Mark. You have to say them three times to make them real ;)
P.S: The ZVE 10 mark is great, too
Only for DJI mic 2 or does mic 1 work too
?
Just the new Mic 2
Cracking the MI shoe is big news. I'm immediately a fan. Less cables and auto gain are two big things. Can they make a compact stereo XY mic for MI?
Quality make-em-up. Would watch again.
😂😀
Godox you can trust me too for another sponsorship video because my channel also talk about microphone 😆
haha - give them a shout - they are great to work with
What can you recommend me, hollyland or Dji mic 2?
if you don’t need the internal recording, the hollyland is my pick
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis if I’m using it outside like I’m on my travel or many people surrounds me, which is the best pick? Thank you
I bought the DJI Adapter and it failed after it's third outing, it was a royal pain as it was a big complicated video with a lot moving parts.
I think the DJI also sounds very tinny in general and have been thinking about changing it up so will check out the godox as I have some of their lights in my studio
Imagine if Sony put a mic transmitter in their cameras natively. Sony could crush it if they just made cameras usable. Fire all the old guard.
I was just playing my Sony Playstation 2, started this video and now I'm playing my son's PS5. Has nothing to do with this video
DOESN'T IT????
That's nice and all. But it was not mentioned once that it has 32-Bit Float. So I'd not even consider it. And out of those that DO have it, I think the Røde Wireless Pro sounds best.
I talked about that in the video - it does not have internal recording or 32-bit float. I like the Rode a lot too
Does the digital audio feature of the Godox mics work on other cameras or is it just for Sony cameras?
Just Sony
Only problem with this design is you cannot put a top handle on a cage
True.
Can you connect the DJI mic which comes with the Pocket 3 creator combo to a Sony Camera by buying that DJI adapter? Or does that particular mic just work with the Pocket 3?
The Hollyland blows the others away in quality.
The adapter connects to the receiver. So you’d need the receiver which is the most expensive part
Brooo... lark m2 gives them studio mic SHURE SM7B rumble vibes... Absolute beast
TikTok: That is an awesome HAND mic
😂😂
Nice, but I have single DJI Mic2 from my Pocket 3, and I actually do not care to connect this to my camera. Cause I record internally 32bit float and then link it in post.
And also I'm not buying anything Godox anymore :D. I spent already $3500 on their gear (lights, flashes, etc) and they don't even want to sent me their $200 flag set for the review 🤣🤣🤣.
🤣 I’m sure the right rep will contact you soon
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 😅😅😅 My channel is 100x too small for this to happen.
I wonder how they got the license to use the Multi interface hot shoe, Sony were quite salty about it, they went as far as to discontinue an adapter they once made (hot shoe to 3.5mm) just to boost their microphone sales
Not sure - but flashes can use it - so I was never aware of Sony limiting it.
Did you shoot the outdoor test clips with this Sony G Lens? Is this the Sony 16-55 aps-c lens?
The walking shots was the sony 11mm apsc on the zv-e10ii. The seated outdoor shots was the 15-25 G on the ZV-E1
i thought this was about Sony getting an A mount battery to E mount inlet adapter or a huge A6700A revamp where they added a better hardware (like 1/8000 mechanical or a joystick)
I am disappointed.
I haven't heard any such rumblings at all
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis well Sony can screw themselves then.
The A7RIV is a good all rounder and the fixed screen ain't a problem since I can just use IEM on the phone, but all my lenses are Minolta and A7RIV is only compatible with LA-EA4
I'm very inclined to get the A7IV, but I'm afraid the 14mp crop won't serve much if I had to crop an aircraft a lot... AAAAAAAAAAAA
DJI sounds thick, godox sounds thin, hollyland sounds the best
I’m good with the first gen DJi mic and charging case.
still great
Just a random thought, most cameras including the ZV-E1 only record in 16bit from external mics, this may be fine for many things but considering mics with onboard recording these days usually do 24bit and some even 32bit, recording audio with the camera is a huge downgrade... So assuming you want to use the mic's own onboard recording, the wifi part may just not be necessary for many applications, so why not just a tiny cheap 24bit or 32bit recorder with no wireless transmission at all instead? - does such a thing exist?
Looking forward to the next gen hollyland that has the no cable solution and 32 bit float without making the transmitters any bigger! One can dream…
DJI all the way ❤️
Wrong name at 10:30 … the holly land sounds the best through iPad speaker
The one affiliate link i was looking for. The hot shoe adapter thingy. But it’s not in your description
Sorry - thanks for letting me know amzn.to/47EJVaj
Should test mics in the same location. Impossible to compare when recording in such different locations.
The test with all three mics is done in the same location.
That is a great option. I hate wires.
That's awesome. Why aren't there more products with adapters for Sony hot shoe?
I know, right??
DJI is about to announce the new DJI Mini Mic.
haven’t heard anything myself
I got the sony a6300 is not compatible? :(
I want a GPS for the Sony hotshoe.
Great concept but sounds way better via 3.5mm
I should have included the 3.5mm for a test - because I couldn't hear much difference with the Godox. Do you have that one?
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis they sent me one and I love the wireless part but godox did way better via 3.5mm. So for now I'll stick with the rode wireless go II until I can save the money for the DJI
Man, that Godox is mighty tinny sounding! I still love the HollyLand Lark M2 over all others. The DJi Mic 2 is a very close second. I hope HollyLand can make a Lark M3 with 32bit float and somehow fit a lav mic port in that little thing!?
That would be awesome. Might be hard to have internal record g in such a small transmitter
My DJI mic original sounded better and the firmware update might improve clarity of spoken work but at the cost of adding
sibilance "sssss" sound emphasis.
I'd love to use the hotshoe, but I'm using a cage that makes sure I can't.
yeah, some cages block it
Mark!!! It's dulcet tones, sir!!
haha - I enjoy my ignorance - I'll never change!! 😀
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis we love a self aware king 😂
Do they make for canon?
Sony only - but you can use the 3.5mm jack for any brand
“Let’s make a mic for content creators with a flashing light and an obnoxious logo right on the front! That’ll make their footage look as awesome as it’ll sound!” You gotta wonder who they employ as product designers at these outfits
😂😂 yes - subtlety is not their strong suit
"But this one goes to 11."
it’s recorded in Dubly.
I have not figured out why anyone records to the camera directly. I mean Mark does great videos. Godox makes cool stuff.
convenience really. I'f I'm vlogging and i have 30 clips - finding and syncing them all can be a hassle
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis You make more videos than me :-)
Speeds up post.
@@stephenericwalsh Mark convinced me for bigger UA-camrs -- yes. For baby UA-camrs like me not so much.
As an owner of both of these the godox is terrible audio, even at its lowest setting it can peak while talking, it has 3 gain levels which are high, higher and unusable
What about Canon???
So here is the question....as a Hollyland fanboy who is currently using the Lark Max....When do we get 32bit float and hotshoe adapters 😂
I know, right?? That'd be awesome
I bought one of those DJI adapters and it literally didn’t work, it was just unresponsive. Was too lazy to sort it out or return it. Buyer beware.
That’s too bad!!
I just bought one so Godox can thank you. Be careful about 32-bit float. Sorry, my opinion, which I blather on relentlessly in my videos, is a scam when it comes to analog recording. Want to use it in post, fine. Believe it improves audio capture...caveat emptor.
I only use the internal 32-but float as a backup. Nice to have - but usually not necessary
Anyway, you might want to put a link in your description to the compatibility doc which you can find on the Godox site. I can use it in "analog" mode (use wire), but was hoping otherwise. Guess I have to think more about getting the E10 ;)
Woah
Interesting. Anyone knows if there’s a similar adapter to connect the DJI mic 1 to Sony’s hot shoe and thereby avoid an audio cable. Cheers
You’d think with the way it was made with that USBC and Lightning adapter that there would be, but it seems there isn’t. It kind of makes me want to get the Godox instead because of how much cheaper it is.
@@steev182Yes, looks like it might be the way to go.
Until Sony lock everyone out with a firmware update like they did with 3rd party batteries and killing AF on 3rd party lenses :(
nice 😃
