Even though Diana was only 14, this is a truly great performance by anyone's standards.
As you say, it is not just the remarkable vocal control and richness of timbre and colour, but the incredible emotional intensity and the perfectly judged theatricality of the story-telling.
Although the performance expresses pain and Diana had suffered terribly in her first years, one must not forget that she is _acting_ , and Diana herself is completely separate from the song's persona.

Not only a Unique singer with unmatched talent and a one of a kind voice but she is also a wonderful human being.
Just a few days ago she initiated the "Diva Youth Support Foundation" and she headed it as president, the main activity of the Foundation is targeted assistance and comprehensive assistance to orphans and children in orphanages in education and socialization: for example, payment for classes with psychologists and tutors, conducting various courses and master classes, etc.
Remember that she is just 20 years old and she is already actively helping kids to escape the same predicament she found herself in to all those years ago.
This is a person worthy of admiration, not over-commercialized famous people, not Kardashians not fake celebrities or whatever else the media are trying to pass around today...

Yes, it was very difficult for Diana as a child... But everything has changed, we cannot predict our fate. Diana is like a diamond that was born in the bowels of the earth and experienced tremendous pressure, was found and is now turning into a diamond, gradually acquiring/polishing more and more new facets of her talent

As for her ability to convey emotions she says she often lets the song/music takeover and totally immerses herself in the song and often does not clearly remember what she has done and has to view the video later. She is in tears at the end. Incidentally she can yodel which is how she flips notes or registers.

The background of the song is essential to know. The title of the song is "Ornery (or "Fastidious" or "Finicky") Horses". The song has nothing to do with horses in reality - the horses are being used as a metaphor for life. The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.
There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home.
At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family.
The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.

There are two heros in her story, her adoptive Mother, who rebuilt her and nurtured her talents is the key. The second is Igor Krutoy, who enabled her to have the musical teaching she needed.

Her childhood was "bad" but 5 years old she was adopted by very good parents who made her to what she is, a confident young woman. And you can see her mother, keeping a careful eye on her daughter. It is a sad, traditional Russian song about an Orphan girl standing at the river to be brought to her forced marriage and an uncertain future. But she is a remarkable singer, one of a kind.

In 2018 Diana first sang this song in the singing competition 'You are super' (she was 14 years old).
This international TV competition is unique in the world and was specially developed for adopted and orphaned children. It is designed not only to give positive emotions to children who do not have a prosperous childhood, but also to hope for changes in their destiny.
Diana entered the competition 'You are Super!' in 2018 and 2019 and won twice. The winner of the season will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to UA-cam and soon she had millions of fans.
The project producers help the finalists start studying and encourage their creativity. Diana won a scholarship to the College of Music. Igor Krutoy, as a juror, gave her a small apartment in Moscow. So, she could start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy (She died of Covid-19 in Oct. 2020)…
