Thank you for the wonderful instructions on how to decipher breaking down a quilt. Your instructions make it much easier to understand how to make a difficult quilt block so much easier to understand.
Thank you so much! I feel as though I truly went to school this morning. You are always so clear and thorough in your instructions. Thank you for taking on this mission!
Awesome! Thank you so much for these instructions! Truly helpful! I have done this myself with a couple of quilts/patterns that I loved, but now that I know what to look for, it will be much easier. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video. I was fortunate in the first year of my quilt making journey to have taken a Mary Ellen Hopkins class (It’s okay to sit on my quilt). She explained this concept you’ve demonstrated. Since then, 27 years ago, I have used very few patterns. I look at a quilt find the block then size them to my needs and make the quilt. Graph paper was, and still is, my friend. Most of my quilts begin on graph paper. I have EQ8 but find I’m more comfortable with paper.
I use a lot of graph paper as well. I think the block becomes simpler when you hand draw it. I mostly used EQ in the past to size the quilt, but it is a great tool! Thanks so much for watching.
Great video, as always, and very interesting. In the first quilt, I immediately saw 3 blocks: a square in a square, a basic background block, and a 16-patch.
OMG These were wonderful. I have drawn out the last one on my trusty grid paper. I have a special fabric designated to a two color quilt. What could be easier than a one block (25) wonder. Decisions is 12" throw or 15" coverlet. OKAY off to do fabric calculation. Thanks again. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
I just wish she still had a retreat center and was teaching because I would definitely go on retreat with Carol. I had loved her 2023 block a day. It really taught me a lot and introduced me to blocks.
I plan to make more videos in 2025. The retreat center was wonderful for me and my husband. I am looking into some online classes too! Thanks for the kind comments and thanks for watching.
Hey! I’m thrilled this video showed up. I haven’t been seeing you often and I have missed you! This is fascinating to me and hope in the new year, I get to do more research to learn what you have designed to teach us.The funny thing is I love to play the game “ can I figure out this quilt construction”. I do it every time I see a quilt I love. After watching this video, I can now see I have missed on a few😂 Thanks so much! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 (KH)
Hi Carol. So great to see you pop up on my feed this morning. I have been thinking about buying EQ8 as a self-entertainment software. IE doodling quilts. But am afraid it may be clunky and take too much effort to learn. I don't feel I need it to quilt.. I enjoy the mental math (fellow engineer), but can see me sitting around in the eveinings I don't feel like quilting and making up quilts with different fabric. But if it is frustrating or futsy to use, it won't be fun. I'd appreciate your thoughts on a future video. Happy Thanksgiving.
Like any software, I only really use about 15% of what it can do. Mostly I use it to draw blocks and find quilt sizes. Unless you are going to design patterns for sale or for teaching, graph paper is great. Don't get me wrong, it is a GREAT program, and they have good lessons on their website and thousands of people that share tips. I use it a lot to prepare my instructions and for images on the website. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.
I love this tutorial! I try to do the same when I see a quilt I like. Have a ? on the second to last quilt - the one with the half rectangles. What size would I cut the rectangles for a 12” finished block?
For a 12" block, each grid space will finish at 4" x 4". For the rectangles we cut the grid space in half. So half of 4" is 2". That makes each rectangle 2" x 4" finished. Be sure to watch the previous video on the Churn Dash. You will see how to use my grid chart to find all different block sizes. Thanks so much for watching.
I haven't done a tutorial on that. I will add that to the list and see what I can do. Have you tried the lessons in EQ8? They are really good. I look up things all the time there. Thanks for watching.
@CarolThelen Thank you. Yes, I learned how to draw a hexagon using circles, but having trouble creating a quilt with it, other than with the hexagon layout included with EQ8. Trying to duplicate an antique pieced quilt, without y seams.
I think I’m gonna give myself EQ8 for Christmas. But the primary reason I wanted is because I have bits and pieces of blocks that I want to put together. Will this software help me if I have various blocks of various sizes to calculate the sashing between I need?
It should be able to do this. It sounds like you would use the "Custom Set" layout. I suggest you go to their website lessons. click the link then click SUPPORT. Look for EQ8 LESSONS on the left. Enter the search term "Custom Set". It's really a great program. www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1872213&u=641491&m=117007

This is an awesome tutorial. I don’t have EQ but feel more confidant in drawing on graph paper. Thanks.
