Day 5 of the Everest Base Camp trek and it's another acclimatisation day, this time at 3,900m elevation in Pengboche. Much like the acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar it doesn't involve just sitting around. Instead, Ghanesh and I trekked up to 4,600m to see Ama Dablam base camp.
Ama Dablam is perhaps the most aesthetic mountain in the region, topping out at 6,812m and is often climbed in preparation for some of the 8,000m mountains (i.e Lhotse and Everest).
I'd never seen a proper basecamp and considering that Ama Dablam had been visible to us for the last couple of days, it made sense to hike up to its base camp.
The hike itself isn't particularly strenuous, across reasonably rolling hills up from Pengboche, taking less than a coupe of hours. Funnily enough, because it was Winter, I wasn't expecting there to be a basecamp set up. Instead, we found a full basecamp set up for those attempting a summit of Ama Dablam. There were even climbers practising rappelling on a 30ft boulder that sits on the relatively flat area where basecamp is.
From what I understood, two companies set up the base camp and flew in teams for their summit attempts. As such, it was surprisingly well stocked. After poking our heads in to the cook tent, Mingma Sherpa directed us to the dining tent where he served us coffee and told us about the Winter season and the summit route.
A quick game of volleyball later and we headed down to avoid the high winds that can pick up in the valley in the afternoon.
I'm of the opinion that if you have the time, you should include Ama Dablam basecamp as part of your EBC trek itinerary, especially if you are doing it in the winter. There's no permanent basecamp set up at Everest because it's not the climbing season so this might be your only chance to see a fully fledged basecamp. It's also incredibly peaceful and gives you great views of this famous mountain.

Thanks for showing Ama Dablam basecamp. This mountain is to me one of the most beautiful! Each time I see it, it somehow puts a big smile on my face…

Stumbled on your videos this morning. I was there in early November. Your vlogs are the best I have seen of the trek. You are a great narrator, you capture so well the essence of the journey and I appreciate that you also journal each part of the trek. Looking forward to watching the entire series. I plan to go back to do Chola Pass and Goyko Lakes. And, you have peaked my interest to go to Ama Dablan Base Camp. Thank you for sharing your journey!

@Murielle - thanks, kind words indeed! Hopefully they are useful for people, when I was researching the EBC Trek I found that everyone just had kit recommendations or had tried to put the whole trek into a 15 minute video which (as you probably know) just doesn't do it justice. I'd love to Chola Pass and Gokyo lakes.....Gokyo-Ri looks incredible, though apparently it's a few extra days of pretty hard work!

@Frigid Canuck - there's absolutely no way she'd go on a hiking trip! (Presuming you meant Farrah?)
