Groucho referred to the song's title in "Horse Feathers" (1932).
No, in "Duck Soup" (1933).
A different time....
This song is about the resilience of African-Americans. The unfortunate title is just an anachronism.
Thank you so much for preserving this history. I hear the song as a protest song - sarcastic, bitter, but also communicating the strong, survivor character that lets oppressed folk get through, get on, and get stronger in spirit. If this song riles the soul, God knows our souls need riling. Who needs to be comfortable in times like these! ? Substitute the word “women” for “darkies” and you have the J. D. Vance anthem!!
Thanks!
It just gives me an icky feeling to listen to those lyrics. 😢
Why?
I LOVE that song!
My FAVE version of it is by Kate Smith.
Another great old Tune is: "The Sun has got His Hat on"
I think she meant " inky"! 😂
this is fake
What is fake?
That's the trouble with people, you say "it's fake" just a feeling? You need to do research, please don't tell me you vote,we need Trump
