2:47 the wreck begins and 2:50 the yellow flag goes out. Have any idea how much ground a race car covers in 3 seconds? . This is the typical reaction time of corner workers across the board. Notice how he flexes but nothing happens. He/they have no plan in mind for what to do in various situations. (This particular worker and situation is not a good example of what I'm going to say but the result applies). Can you imagine a baseball player doing that before he throws the ball to the appropriate base? A corner worker, whether they are paid or volunteer, has a job to do and a responsibility for the safety of the drivers. You have to have a plan and train your mind to react Instantly to any event! I am an ex driver and was a corner worker for years and I watch corner workers more than the cars as a spectator. When I drove into a flat out Blind corner, I would watch the corner workers to see if they reacted to something going on around the corner. Not to see if the yellow came out but to watch for that Flinch, that body posturing, because I knew they wouldn't throw an Instant flag at the first sign or trouble. This lack of concentration or more importantly, responsibility, is rampant throughout mankind but I would hope it wouldn't show up at a sport we have a passion for. Driver's lives depend on communication from the workers.After decades of observing humans in positions like this and in my careers including fire fighting, I have come to the conclusion that most people participate for the wrong reasons. A lot want to do the right thing but don't posses the personality to ACT! A lot want to be heroes in their own eyes and those of others. It is up to the people in charge to weed out those who don't make the grade to protect the people that have been put in their charge.It is also incredibly important not to be a "Championship Winning" flag Waver. A flag that is waved improperly exposes very little surface to the drivers and can't be seen at a great distance. A flag held high by the handle and low with your other hand, will expose the entire flag surface to the driver. If the situation requires a waving flag, move the flag up and down from over head to a 3 o'clock position. The faster you do this the more urgency is communicated to the driver. it isn't sexy but it is the best way to Do The JOB!If you, as a corner worker, are there to get your cookies off, go find something else to do that won't get people killed. Now, back to the fun!

In the first crash it looks like there's fire through the smoke. But since there isn't any when the smoke clears, it was probably part of one of the cars.

I guess I need to explain it...She came onto pit road 3rd lane out, yet her pit box was number 3. The "common sense" mistake is that as a driver, knowing your pit box is #3, you make sure that you get down to the bottom before entering pit row (even Jeff Gordon commented on this fact). As a driver, knowing this, you plan for it not as you need to turn in (across the nose of 3 cars) but rather back at exit of turn 4.
