    I have found out the hard way that once most of these companies bring in liquidation companies the "deals" aren't actually deals. I had kept my eye on a side table at Bed Bath and Beyond a few years back when they were closing. The sign said 50% off, but there was a sticker on the piece at around $249. It was stuck over the original sticker which was $99.00. So at 50% off, the piece was still well over the original price. Buyer beware.

      Same at Tuesday Morning. In fact I wanted to purchase napkins in a basket next to the check out. She said those could not be purchased since they were changing the prices. They were raising them so they could apply a percent off to them afterwards. Raising them first. 🙄😡

    I worked at Joann for a long time as a store manager and went back to help close a store that was moving. They will cut off the military and teacher discounts but if you work there you still get your discount until they close. I can tell you I got deals that I will never get again. The sewing machines and irons and cricut machines will not get marked down they will go to another store in most cases. JoAnn is talking about a Chapter 11 which is a restructure and not a closing. They may close some stores that are not doing well but hopefully not all. Keep checking back you will get great deals on thread and notions.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 місяців тому +12

      Thank you for your insight Sandy! Hopefully a restructure will help the company revamp and the company will be able to rebound well in the future. People still want to craft and JoAnn’s is the best big box store for anything crafty in my opinion. It has the widest selection compared to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.

      Well if they had not been so stupid during The Covid19, while Walmart had hundreds of People shopping down the road, Joanns would only let 10 people in at A time, plus the price was twice as High! I gave up and went to A Walmart that still had Fabric!

      I read that they are cutting workers. Not enough workers ( in my opinion) is the biggest problem. I’m a former employee and we just couldn’t keep up. The customers suffer the store suffers and the employees get so discouraged. The pay isn’t great either. It’s really a shame because this good be a great store. I don’t know if the top executives were making so much money it left no hours for the store to have enough employees. Take Chick fil a, always so many employees working and they will have cars lined up in the street. Manager being included with the total hours I think is another problem. Pay management. The other employees should be on another system. I guess they think managers can work on the floor but other than helping occasionally on the registers they have enough to do. I just hate the store got to this point. Hope they can regroup and more staff and good managers. Managers can divide employees, I had one that was hired off the street and told everyone she was planning on firing everyone and replace with people she knew. She ran off a lot of good employees. 😢

    We actually had JoAnn's close a store and open a new store about 3 miles away under a year ago. They bought in a liquidation company which sold fabric and items almost completely up to the closing date which was priced higher than the regular store price even though they appeared to be "lowering" the price biweekly. Lots of these "sales" are anything but.

      Wow interesting! I haven't heard any rumors about a new store opening, but Hobby Lobby recently moved from the same shopping center to a nicer, newer area, so maybe JoAnn's is looking to do the same?!
      You're right about the "sales." The same items are probably online for much less as a doorbuster....

    New at JoAnn, they carry Lion Brand "Local Grown " in wool and cotton. Finally we can get wool and cotton grown, processed and milled right here in the US. We are helping US farmers and mill workers. I shop at Joann, I don't want them to go out of business. If you have kids they have a lot of great items to keep them busy and learning. In previous decades JoAnns was a great place to shop for all things sewing. Fabric was affordable, the dot sales were fantastic, patterns went on sale regularly. Then came theday fabric prices literally doubled with the claim it was their suppliers. It was then i began searching the internet for online stores.
    Fast forward to the arrival of our local Hobby Lobby who offers equal quality fabric yet everyday prices are literally half of what JoAnn sells for, and HL has40% off sales regularly.
    So as uch as I'd like to support JoAnns it just didn't make sense.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 місяців тому +1

      The pricing of their fabric is really high for the quality (or lack of in a lot of cases). For the most part, I buy from the clearance section because I just have to wait for it to land there and then it’s such a better deal.

    It is sad to see fabric shops close. The same thing happened here recently. The chain near me (which is similar to JoAnn’s) closed and now I have to drive at least 45 mins if I need something quick. I do most of my fabric shopping online, but it was nice to know there was a place nearby to get a zip or some thread real quick. Love what you got though! 💞

      It really is SO sad. When I decided to start knitting and cross stitching earlier this year, it was so nice to be able to just walk into JoAnn and get all of the basics I needed to get started when creativity struck. Walmart and Hobby Lobby near me carry limited stock of zips and other notions...but nowhere near what JoAnn has. I'm trying to keep myself from hoarding ALL of the notions "just in case" 🫣

    I had to smile near the end of your video when you talked about getting to your patterns and start working with what you have. It was like your thoughts are mine. I have bought hundreds of dollars worth of everything at JoAnn's for years. Fabric, patterns, sewing machine, jewelry, 18"dolls, Christmas ornaments, rubber stamps and more. I have bins of quality materials that have not been used in years, and patterns worth $22 that were only a $1.00 with a coupon each that are my style that haven't been opened. These are gold. JoAnn's does not have good quality fabric anymore, and not very good patterns. But like you said, we have it and now, we can make quality clothing from decent patterns for such a time as this.

    • @ErinSews

I do like Arizona Quilts in Surprise, AZ. Family owned and very nice people. Another thing I like to do is randomly pick a state and see what shops they have. I got some nice fabric from The Quilted Raven in Anchorage, Alaska.

    It was bare because they sent stuff to the other stores and just left lower-demand items at this store that they wanted to truly get rid of, but they didn't really lower much of the pricing (some of it is even higher than original - watch out!) and they aren't taking coupons, so the "sale" pricing is at best the same as the coupon pricing and they can still empty the store at the same time. They're not interested in actually liquidating - Hancock did the same thing when they went bankrupt and closed their stores.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 місяців тому +2

      The money must be worth it to pay to send things to other stores when it’ll probably end up being sold for even less during a doorbuster weekend or something. It probably does make closing easier when there’s less inventory to worry about.

  • @nans969
    @nans969 5 місяців тому +4

    I've gone to Hancock fabrics and AC Moore when they liquidated. To be honest, a bunch of the deals really were not. Many items were marked down to what they were priced at durring regular sales. Unless you need something, don't get it just because it's marked down.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 місяців тому +2

      I don't even think it'll be worth trying to find something specific there since it's so picked over unfortunately (it isn't super close to me). You're definitely right that it's not worth buying stuff just because it's on "sale." That's how they get you!

    I closed my fabric shop just before the pandemic so I find it hard to get excited about a store closing and all the stresses behind the scenes. I feel for the staff. They can’t just give their stock away no matter how much that would be great! Please spare a thought or two.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 місяців тому +2

      Christine, I’m so sorry about the closing of your shop! I definitely feel for the staff and the ones I talked to were set up for once the store closes.
      I think the frustrating thing with these liquidation sales from large companies is that the prices are higher than they normally are, and it’s annoying as a consumer to feel like they’re marking things up to trick us into spending more. If I drove to a Joann’s an hour away, I’d be able to get the same patterns for $1.99. If you can sell them at another store for that price, they should be the same price at the one where you’re trying to clear stock.
      I might not have expressed it enough in the video, but I am REALLY bummed for our community and the loss of this store. I was trying to also highlight the fact that for me, personally, it will push me to shop at (and support) stores I haven’t in my local area and online. I’d love to support more small businesses, but I’ve been negligent in doing so because it’s so easy to just go to Joann’s. I definitely feel for the staff and the crafters in my community!

      My husband would tell you that I have more fabric. I am just addicted to buying it. I used to always buy 6 yards of a fabric at a time. Then since 5 yrs ago with money tight I have gone down to 3 yards. Some 1 yards to use in quilts. I am 77 now and am not doing my sewing alternating and embroidery business. I just want to do quilts and enjoy my time left. If I die with a lot of fabric left, there will be someone out there whom wants it bad. I started sewing when I was 8. It has been my life even when I worked. I do like to fell of the fabric before I buy it. But I do like buying online too. For the first time in my life I bought 4 fat quarter’s because they didn’t have it on the bolt. I have yet to see or find a jelly roll I would buy. But maybe later. Enjoy life.

    Is JoAnn's totally closing? I thought they're closing a few of the stores in order to try to save the business. They were here for us during the pandemic, they still have the best coupons compared to Hobby Lobby and Michaels...Filing for Bankruptcy--means you try to make things work to get back and healthy on finances...?? Sometimes when a business over extends...like Starbucks...one on each corner, they started closing a few in order to consolidate more, which to me makes more sense... JoAnn Fabrics needs a good chance, they've been there for us, for the
    sewing industry as well as now for crafting too...

    We have two Joanns here in North Alabama; both are close to an hour from me. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them closed as it is always messy and out of things. I can get some things at Hobby Lobby but order online most of the time. The Hobby Lobby s are at least 30 minutes away and they seem to be turning into more of a home decor store than crafts and fabric store.

      I'm sorry to say that's exactly how my JoAnn's was before they announced the closure. The whole company needs an overhaul and can hopefully be saved....

The fabric with the liquidation sale was $6.99 a yard but online it's $3.49 and the yarn liquidation price was $7.99 and online it's on sale for $4.99. I don't usually like ordering online because at one point they completely lost my order and I had to reorder the yarn I needed and it then didn't arrive in time, another time I order 4 skeins of one brand and color and they sent me 3 and then tossed in a random slightly similar color of a completely different brand. Erin, I have mixed feelings about JoAnn's. I think nothing beats a touch-and-feel session at a real fabric store but I've found JoAnn's to be a huge disappointment as far as value-for-money. They've been playing the "over-price-the-merchandise-then-offer -constant-huge-'sales'".game in which you end up actually paying as much for lower quality fabric at JoAnn's as you can pay for higher quality fabric online. Online purchases can be iffy also. I have the hardest time with the transparency of fabrics bought online. They look fine but when they arrive I can see right through them even though I've had similar fabrics from somewhere else that wasn't as transparent. JoAnn's were handy for a last minute time such as interfacing, buttons, etc. Nice way to look at the positives and negatives of your store closing.

      Ah yes, that's probably true! Some customers in the store were asking about display racks and the like, and the manager told them that some might be sold, but most will go to other stores. WOW I am a native Mississippian all my 69 years. I have only bought at Joanns 4 times, I just bought 2 fabrics from Biloxi. It was on the news about 4 days ago that Joanns DID file bankrupcy. I live between Hattiesburg and Biloxi. I called a couple dozen places , none sold apparel fabrics. The only one I found was in Corinth, MS...might as well say Memphis. Do you have any larger size 24 patterns????? where do you sell? I have picked up some nice apparel fabs at Goodwill and am using their $1 mens shirts for quilting.

      Purely word of mouth. I have a local friend that texted me back in January that the closing was official, and then she also let me know about the start of the sale when she found out.
      I heard that it was official! It does seem like it's a restructuring, not a total closure of the company, so that's promising!
