What a marvellous performance by Khusrau-e-Saani; Aftab-e-Sitar; Khansahb Vilayat Khan. You'll be remembered and will be kept throbbing at hearts forever 💗🎼.
Wow. First time I ever listened to a full performance by this artist. He's remarkable. Remarkable. He was crying in that last song. So beautiful to see an artist become vulnerable in front of others. I think it's one of the reasons why I've drifted away from popular American music, and pop music in general. Music for me is a place to go to. A world to enter and join... to be one with. And the "stuff" that come out of you when you are truly connected to it, you can't predict. It's spirit that is unleashed by the music and the people that are around you are also touched by this spirit, this power. On this day, in that home, this vidwan certainly unleashed his spirt to this community. Even through UA-cam, here, the power of the music jumps out of the screen. Thank you for sharing this music with us in other parts of the world. Peace.
Back in the 70s/80s even rock musicians recording live in studio ... You saw a natural drift in tempo .. now musicians records their stems over a metronome .. have multiple takes if needed to make it sound perfect .. before mixing them to create a perfectly manicured music. What audience expects to see = Tiger in the Wild. What they get = Well groomed toy poodle
Dear Chakravarthyji. Those who are familiar with our music are also familiar with the tradition of showing respect for the maestros while talking about them or mentioning their names... For example for me it is always Pt. Ravi Shankerji, Pt. Shiv kumar Sharmaji, Ustad All Rakha Sahib, Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahib ( MY GURUJI ) and so forth. Respect for these great teachers is the essence of learning the music and understanding the tradition.
Extraordinario!, Estas notas "abren" todas las células de la carne, desatan nudos, rasgan todos los sentidos... Penetran hasta lo más profundo. Llevan al paroxismo del corazón.
You tube and some Great Music Lovers who proved themselves as real Music Lovers by sharing their valuable collections with like minded music lovers all over the world are the real CHAMPIONS like Jasmeet Chana ....
This is an affirmation of the supremacy of Ustad Vilayat Khan at the pinnacle of sitar playing. Pinky ji is superb too. What a soulful rendering! The demeanor of both of these artistes is commendable and worth imitating by the young artistes. They were born with it, however. Narayanakurup Kanthikumar/Olympia,Wa/Jan 17, 2015
so soothing...so surreal...such a sweet personality...if you decrease the volume and listen it's like light rainfall on the grasslands...sometimes like a shallow river flowing slowly following the winds...sometimes like the flapping of bird wings in unison...Ustad Vilayat Khan dadu-ji, tusi great ho....!
Wow! Heavenly! Ustad Vilayat Khan is a Master at making his Sitar Sing when he plays. Totally amazing Off-beat playing. 🙏🏼 Ustad Pinky amazing in a respectful way accompaniment with Ustad Ji..🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
The way he talks about his sitar as a living companion of his. That doesn’t come by practice, it comes with deep lifelong building of trust, faith, love, affection, passion and relationship with it.
It is wonderful to feel the humility of the Sitar Legend in his ripe wisdom in the presence of the Satguru, and to see the humble art of the young man to his side, beautifully complimented by Ustadji just near thinned of the performance. Thank you for this informal and yet very live performance.
Rabindranath Tagore has many songs set to Raag Behag. One of the most celebrated is a dhamar (Jage Natho Jochhona Raate), which explores the fusion of Nature, melody and moonlight. I wonder why Behag appeals so much. It is also a raag to which many Brahmo Samaj compositions were set. Once Amiya Ranjan Bandopadhyay started Behag at the Dover Lane conference at 8.30./9 p.m. I guess its time range is also quite wide.
i really like his Gitanjali poems.. thank you for this recommendation to accompany this wonderful music! :) I wish I knew your language, I am very fascinated by the culture but i guess there is still time :)
I feel the same about Behag, it was a favorite of Swami Vivekananda too....In the late evening it instills a remarkable feeling in you, playfully ecstatic at times and melancholic.
So true... To me Behag is synonymous to "Darao Aamar Aakhiro Aage"...or "Jibono Moroner Shimana Chharaye" - and many more amazing RabindraSangeets and BrahmaSangeets are set in this raag... Behag never fails to evoke various deep emotions!
No words can express what is going on here in this mehfil... Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb is the Aftaab-e-Sitar and all others are living under his light...may he be in peace in heaven
Many thanks for uploading such videos. it is indeed a treat to hear such maestros like late Ustad Vilayat Khan saheb in such baithak type programs. It is done with such close up that one feels he is actually seating a bhithak and hearing such maestros from so close a distance. Khansaheb played both Bihag and Pancham se Gara thumri in a heartful manner.
The drone strumming at the beginning is much louder than the melodic element. That seems to be a feature of UVK’s later recordings more than in the 60’s - 70’s. Could someone please enlighten me if that is due to microphone placement, or a deliberate evolution of style?
Ustadji is pitched to a 'C' sa ...(unusual?). Please , what is the event ? it does not appear to be a formal concert .Religious gathering to the Guruji working his mala in front of Ustadji? He seems to be adjusting the Sitar in and out .... Marvelous .
+Manjit Singh When these Maestros play a raga, the chose different keys. The key they play expresses the the raga In vocals, Our C is half pitch lower. Our C is almost C#...on harmonium.
A chromatic tuner would be better off to tune your instruments with Indian scales or C pitch. I myself, have micro tuning on my keyboards and tune everything according to the Harmonium. In case of Sitar, you can tune it to C, no problem. Just make sure your tanpura (electronic) has fine tuning. Then the tabla is easy to tune to your desire.
two questions if I may:, I have noticed on Ustaji's sitars a small "turnstile" at the rear of the Tabli on which is wound the main string and Ustadji fine tunes the main string with it. I have yet to see one on a sitar for sale elsewhere can it be installed? It seems more efficient that the standard tuning bead, also, did they install a second small bridge just above the nut ( like the ones found on dilrubas and Sarangis .his seemed up to the minute as if ustadji was having some tuning problems.....Thank You..

Looks as if he has mastered raga bihag. he plays so effortlessly as if the raga is guiding him.🙏
Beautiful, spacious music. An antidote to modern life. I love it when the tablla join. Beautiful articulate drumming.

Both the father and grandfather of Vilayat Khan were pastmasters in this raga, and he too has proved to be a worthy successor to them.

Does anyone know the name of the Dhun at the end? even any of the lyrics? around 1:04:40 he begins. It's beautiful!
It's a amir khusro composition, if i may so remember correctly the attribution, but theyre couplets from "aaj rang hai..."
Aaj rang hai ri ma Rang hai ri. There's a coke studio version which is also pretty good. You can go check that out!
did the kharaj string break at 50:55 ?
Yes
1:09:00 - 11 miraculous.
Played in C amazing , not C # or D .....I love playing in C myself , I know many don't on sitar

good to hear from you. I use a440 pitch c to sing and tune sitar. that's a long way off c#
