To an extent. But once the top edge of the bednife is lost, you're going to get excessive contact and just toast that bednife. We typically run our reels with no contact on golf courses, still cutting paper.
They even have huge multi reel ride on mowers, you can still buy new. I'm not sure I would consider it commercial, the ones I have looked at seem designed to mow a large golf course.
Nah, there is no benefit either way. Grazing animals offer no benefit, beyond leaving some droppings. A non-reel mower vacuums the grass up before cutting, which gives the lawn a uniform height and look. It also mulches the grass into finer pieces, which fall back down and fertilizes the lawn. Reel mowers just scissor anything. None of them damage the 'growing' part of the grass which is below the ground.
@@firstname6208 Very true. And power mower decks create updraft lifting individual grass blade UP, so that it is uniformly cut at the same height. Which looks better. Sharp blades are easier on the grass, which decrease moisture loss through surface area of cut. BUT.... Neither of the mowers or grazing animals injure grass since it grows below ground, and it will rebound just fine. Though those hoofs, can get rough.
That Briggs looks closer to 50 years old based on the similarities to my kohler k series in my ford lawn tractor from 1968. I tried mowing with it but needs new drive pullies due to rust so now I just pull a trailer around with it.
I would have figured that was a break out the blade file and spend a couple hours chart picking it up but I never thought of using like a lapping compound
Kool mower your bedknife looks worn might want to replace the bedknife for a really sharp clean cut not sure what grit you’re using but try some 80 grit then finish up with 120 grit. 👍🏻 love seein old mowers still workin
@cameronbennett5258 Briggs and Stratton has not made a Flathead engine similar to that since the 80s. That's it the newest, a 1986 Briggs and Stratton 5 horsepower. They built models exactly like that with the magnetron starting in 1984. EZ spin before that. They have not changed the mower frame much just the engines. You can usually. Age them unless someone put a newer motor on an older frame pretty easy. If it was my guess that's a mid-eighties. Which is older than 30 years. 1985 was 40 years ago.
That's like saying only one blade on scissors does the cutting. It's 2 acute angles shearing the grass blades. (If what you said was true, you wouldn't need the reel... just push a sharp blade across the lawn, and the grass magically falls when it gets touched by the bed knife.)
@@Truck3r96 ... that's like saying the bed knife holds the blade of grass, while the reel blade cuts it... The two "edges", co-operate, if you like, to shear the grass blades. Anyway, not here to debate minor technicalities, just was pointing out "It takes Two To Tango", when it comes to cutting, as compared to a rotary mower, which uses a grass blade's own inertia to effect the cut... a rotary mower doesn't even need to be sharp, it just cuts by brute force. Have a good day, Bud.✌🏼🇨🇦
@@Truck3r96 Oh... a thought came to mind after I last posted.. not sure where you're from or what your agriculture mechanics are there but, think of a swather(look it up if you're not familiar), which uses a sickle type moving blade to cut, while a set of revolving wooden pieces force, or hold, the stalks in place while the blades cut... that would be more like what your describing as a single cutting edge combined with a holder, or pusher, to hold the stalks to be cut, against the cutting edge. The difference being, with a reel mower, the two edges need actual contact to effect the cut, while a swather needs only to help hold the blade of grass, or stem of wheat, close to the cutting edge.🙃
Your sharpening blades. While they are spinning in your direction at like 400rpm? Bro what?!?! I was all for vintage and was like yes, but after that bruh hell nah.
“Reel excited” 😂
Seriously though I’ve always wondered how that was done
You can also adjust the blade to bed knife adjustment for a better cut.

Its good to know you have a reel mower as opposed to a fake one. :)
That’s way older than 30 years. LOL We didn’t even have those anymore in the 60s.
They still make them brand new lol but they’re high dollar
They even have huge multi reel ride on mowers, you can still buy new. I'm not sure I would consider it commercial, the ones I have looked at seem designed to mow a large golf course.
yeah that thing is early 70's at the absolute, absolute latest.
Rolux X20 - 20" Reel Mower. Go search that. Just because you didn't know doesn't mean it didn't exist.
@@rexjollesthey still existed in the 90’s
Golf courses still use reels. And thare is a proper reel grinder to sharpen them. He jest did a back lap.
My dad made me use a push mower every year I was so happy when the axel broke 👍then I went on to mow lawns professionally for almost 20 years MFW
I always set mine with newspaper folded in half and adjusted it to cut one leave one
A little bit of love & care (maintenance) goes a long eay to the use of a machine for many decades! 👍🦅🇺🇸🤭😇🤓Doug
The best lawnmower ever made
Bro was front lapping lol
It is called grinding compound.
Those mowers are much better for the lawn. More closely leaves the grass as grazers would
They are better for warm season grasses, I’d like to see u running a reel more thru some 6” Tall Fescue in April after it’s been fertilized.

Grazers literally RIP the grass, they don't scissor off the tips like a blade. Sheesh.

I didn't know that's how blades are sharpened, hot damn! 😂
I have a 60 year old mower I did it still works perfectly. No serpents needed.
That's when I used to do gardening too all my bosses had those lawn mowers
I’d love to see you repaint and restore that bad boy to make it look like it did when it was brand new.
That dollar store screwdriver you're using. I have the same 2...and they've been amazing as cheap screwdrivers for 15+ years
Im a golf course mechanic for 55 years. Totally wrong way to sharpen.
So.. waiting for your video..
Keep the old Briggs alive! So much better than all the Honda clones today!
Honda motors are absolutely the most reliable out there.

Grind the reel and swap the bedknife
Turn backwards for backlapping mate
I dont think he would have a brush if he was going forward 😂
I would have figured that was a break out the blade file and spend a couple hours chart picking it up but I never thought of using like a lapping compound
Very nice
When the blade hit the paper and didn’t cut it made me feel funny
Very nice now you need to aerate the lawn😊
That looked like it needed a bar adjustment especially since after sharpening it still had spots that wouldn't cut.
Thats cool, is that the only way to sharpen the blades?
Just tak it to your neighborhood mower tech. Spread the wealth.

I luv old tools things were made well prior to the milinium
Bruh I saw the same one at Home Depot 💀
Broo that's sick, gotta bring back the classic ways of things, why not right?
👍🏻👍🏻
How heavy is that thing ??? Looks like a mini tractor !!!
Not a rough terrain mower.
What is liquid sandpaper called.
Back lapping paste / valve lapping compound
And with a 5horse Briggs it will run forever if you take care of it. Like oil and air fikters
What type of mower is that?
30 years old? So from 1994? No, that thing is from the early 70s if not older. Its now 50 years old minimum.
30 years ago was 1994. I have a feeling that was made 60ish years ago.
When you say 30 years old I'm going to assume that you BOUGHT it 30 years ago but it was already used and is probably more like 50-70 years old.
This shot cost 5 minimum wages in Argentina
Probably could have used the adjuster for the reel to get a good cut before you lapped it in!!
What kind of mower is that, and do they still make it
Just so you know, that's a lot older than 30 years.
Not sure about that, click his affiliate link on this video, you can buy this mower new today, just been updated a little. Almost 1300$

ummmm... 5 HP Briggs and Stratton... this IS a power mower, so I'm not sure what you're saying.
man i thought it was a 30 year old fake mower.
Only 30 years old? I would think it is a little older than that. I don't remember those in the 90s, or even the 80s or 70s
ah yes the finger remover 9000
Smh, I can't believe I've been using a fake mower this entire time

I got some news for ya. That mower is way older than 30 years old. 😏
The chihuaha destroyer 2000
Ok cool but what is the stuff called you pu on the blade
Whean you are baclapping the reel should spin bacwards on the vid it looks like you were spinning it forwards

I've never seen a reel mower with a gas engine.
lets cook jesse 🤨
What's the drill attachment to turn the blades?
I added a direct link to what I purchased in the video. It’s called a Backlapping kit. Which included that attachment.
Ummm...... That's WAAAY older than 30 years. That style of engine is from the 1960's.

Why are you teaching people to do shit the extreme wrong way?
Ah yes. The stereotypical american lawnmower
The hipster of lawn cutting
30yo… so 1994? Seems like a 70’s model?
Why not just sharpen them by hand?
Salt your pasta water, it's real easy. Stop eating bland pasta.
Use an actual sharpener for an even edge all the way across...

Just no. You have no business telling people how to do things the wrong way 🤦♂️

Or you could do it the right way instead of the half-assed way.

I’ll check to see if it has any dates on it. It could be older, I bought it recently on Facebook.
