There really aren't any "glaring" balance issues in 2014 D&D. The only people who noticed the relative weakness of Rangers and Monks were the number crunchers. Actual players loved playing both classes and never felt like they were substantially weaker than their other party members.
@@DabroodThompson I agree for the most part... but Way of the Elements was unplayable imo
Nicely done. And well done in the explanations and objectivity used in your subjective review. ❤😊👍
Love your "Mr. Fantastic" looking hair
@oneutch4048 hahaha, thanks
It's not like a got vote.
I'm with you on the Weapon Mastery. Not only is it going to slow things down with martial characters getting 4 and 5 attacks at low levels, but everybody is going to be swapping weapons all the time to get the most out of their characters. The other thing I'm not liking is all the limited use abilities on the new classes and subclasses. You can tell they're counting on people using DNDBeyond because keeping track of those from session to session while playing in multiple campaigns is going to become pretty unwieldy, especially at high levels.
I'm looking forward to having the rules to read for myself in a few days. I know there's a free rule set on Beyond, but I just don't feel comfortable using the site at the moment.
Have you seen any of the discord on dual-wielding and weapon juggling for this 2024 version?
I think I would like this new edition but I will not support WotC. I will wait until I can buy the books second hand. I got into 5e late so I’m still learning it and still play 3.5 which 5.5 has more similarities to.
That's a nice compilation of changes. Thank you!
I have to say I'm a little puzzled by your take on weapon masteries, though. Of course it's a little more clutter and might bog down a turn every once in a while, but I feel a total amount of 8 different features, most of them with low complexity, will add up to what is very little extra time compared to hundreds of spells for the casters. While some of the masteries come with complex interactions and implications (looking at you, nick), the masteries overall are still more on the rules light side compared to the options provided to casters IMHO.
I don't see why the barbarian and fighter shouldn't be allowed to make the bard and cleric wait for them to actually think about how to complete their turn when they themselves will have to wait for the casters to choose and execute a spell on a regular basis. My guess is that once everybody has some experience with the new rules, the martial's turns will on average be way faster than the caster's once again anyway in regards to both planning and execution.
I'm running two ongoing campaigns using the 2014 rules and don't intend to switch to the new rules midgame, but I'm pretty sure I will incorporate weapon masteries to give the martials more tactical options. My book didn't arrive yet either, so a final decision is still pending, as I don't want to make such a change without proper study and maybe some changes to either some of the masteries themselves or interacting rules like dual wielding. If I had a summoning caster at one of my tables, I might be inclined to go for the new conjuring spells, too, as the old versions of those really used to bog down the game a lot.
Anyway, that's just my take. YMMV and that's ok. One of the things I love most about RPGs is the wide variety of preferences and playstyles they allow for, and I'm always interested in opinions coming from a perspective that differs from my own.
@krempelritter9950 Well said.
I'm not 100% against Weapon Mastery. I'm just not sold on them yet.
@@direden I haven't tried it yet, but I'm eager to. IMO martials suffer from a lack of options except for some specific subclasses like battlemaster or echo knight. Some battlefield control, imposing of conditions or additional attacks can go a long way to make up for that - at least I imagine they can. I would have liked general maneuvers (or whatever those could be called) somewhat like the battlemaster's ones (but without superiority dice) as a martial equivalent to cantrips, though.
my thoughts, as small as they are, why not just do updates to classes, etc as SRDs instead of whole new books, or game versions, especially if they are moving towards being completely digital. This goes for all ttrpgs, especially those like DND and Pathfinder. The mentality of new versions instead of just updated information to add to your game, is similar to the Apple computer mentality. "if we make it they will buy it" if you need it or not. Money grab is a money grab as convoluted as it may look.
@swordsnstones I hear ya. My thoughts... it's been 10 years. I think a new edition at this point isn't really a money grab. I just wanted more innovation. But they don't want to take another 4e style risk.
my 4e phb had teh errata put into it with pen... the stealth section was a mess by the end of the ediiton. putting errata in a book doesn't bother me.
i do hate the big Fing stickers some kickstarters do though
Maybe I'll buy the book for me and my players, but our campaigns are in the middle point and they will not end in less than a year. At that point, I hope I will have completed and maybe published my own ruleset
@@MrSpatafrano awesome!
I 100% support people designing their own games. I'm currently working on a sci-fi game.
@@direden Good luck with your project! My system is harder to describe, kinda pre-Tolkien European fantasy, with a magic system resembling the Avatar series
@@MrSpatafrano I'd play that
Im fine just homebrewing my own version of the game and never buying nothing from WotC again.
Thanks for the overview.
Digital stuff means nothing to me: Erata being out before the street date irks me.
Weapon Mastery I think is going to bog down the game.
I'll not picking this one up, I play in a 5e game and we decided to all pass on switching.
@mykediemart that's a valid choice.
5e is still a solid game... and arguably the best version of D&D.
hashtag fivepointfive ! Let's make it happen
Wrong. BECMI was better written and more friendly to new players. The design and art work was better too. No woke. And is not so slow at combat.
@darthtc23 the 1983 Mentzer boxset was certainly the most user-friendly introduction for new players. I've said that multiple times in previous videos.
In this video, I was referring to page layout and "art design"...
Meaning the way art is utilized alongside page layout.
